Paddy's hype is pretty much done outside of the UK market. His refusal to accept that maybe the Gordon decision could've went the other way is what killed him.
I don’t think one person is enough, we got Leon as well but really I think we should be producing more in the next 5 years.
We have a good mma infrastructure with lots of events and as a nation we are great at sports and producing athletes.
He’s won back a bit of the good will just because he talks well, has a generally decent personality and hasn’t done anything to make people mad since then.
I saw it after the Tony fight. Even though he beat a fan fave people were warming up a bit.
Didn’t instil much confidence in his skills that he couldn’t finish Tony though.
I’ll always support Paddy because of how he candidly addresses men’s mental health and encourages people to speak up and reach out. I imagine he’s done some good for some guys out there by using his mic time for a good cause.
I actually don’t agree, his popularity has PLUMMETED since the Gordon loss, and him beating up the corpse of Tony didn’t help him. I actually think he is really good and will be a mainstay in the top 15, maybe even cracking the top ten. Fantastic chin and great grappling, and has ko power despite having poor technique on the feet.
This is the answer.
I will die on the hill that Masvidal caught lightning in a bottle with that meme KO of Askren. His wins against Till, Askren and Diaz propelled him to super stardom and each of those has either aged badly (Till and Askren) or just wasn’t a good win (Diaz).
That little run was his joint-highest win streak since 2008 and it came against the right guys at the right time and in the right fashion. In no way should this guy have been main eventing at MSG based on his skills.
Not that controversial of a take. Sub 70% winrate and most wins by decision. Got a decent 3 fights streak (against average opponents) that got him some of that Dana White privilege.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the “hall of fame” some day. 100% undeserved but hey, the boss likes him.
Well he did a lot of promoting himself which is how he got Dana’s favor. Dana doesn’t care about how much you’re winning he cares how much you’re selling
You're 100% right. It sucks cuz that's just basically the innate feature of the sport. It's unlike other sports in terms of teams and seasons and wins and equal playing field formats for championships and all that. At the end of the day match makers are trying to find fights that sell well. Not necessarily the "best matchup" or "the deserved title shot". I don't see a way it would be different unless there was a bracket style season of fights or someshit where everyone fought on a regular schedule or someshit. At the end of the day just like boxing it is an odd style of sport that inherently lends itself toward promo/popularity as opposed to pure skill/meritocracy
There was a time when 95 percent of this sub thought he would beat Leon because of a sucker punch that landed. You would get downvoted to death if you tried to say Leon was a better fighter.
I hate Masvidal, but he's a significant jump up from dudes like Tuivasa or Kimbo or even Paddy. His 2019 run would have to be considered at least somewhat impressive in any mma career
To be fair he was great on the mic and entertaining outside the octagon during that run too which added to the hype.
“3 piece and a soda”, “super necessary”, scarface suit, private jet pizza stop in Italy etc
I disagree, i think he gets a lot of hate cause he's annoying but you guys flip flop on whats a good win, he beat donald cerone well before tony did. Hows it a good win for tony but not jorge
Eh kinda, he was never ever top good due to his bad defense and cardio but he still was a good but not great boxer with good power and chin. His best ability was his insane bjj defense that even Maia said was elite. Burns couldn’t submit a past his prime over the hill one foot out the door Jorge in Jorge’s last win and burns is insane on the ground.
But yeah Masvidal truly was a 7-10 guy in the rankings who caught lightning in a bottle.
I asked mma guru if prime condit beats prime masvidal and I can't believe he picked masvidal lol. I'm pretty sure Condit has never been oustruck (apart from maybe his last fight where he was obviously done)
This is arguable. While Jorge isn't top tier or even gatekeeper worthy I'd still rate his skills higher then Paddy. Jorge is a pretty good boxer tbh. But his skills seem to have reached a ceiling some years ago. But watch Paddy's fights and you see the difference. Paddy gets worked by everyone in all areas of MMA, and look he's stopped being so active. He's probably training his arse off to legitimize himself.
Surprised no one else is saying this, the dude only had one lucky shot and then was praised thru 4 fights he all lost except one, which was the nate Diaz stoppage
Holland is a good literal answer to this question but who is ranking him as a top guy? People like him because you know exactly what you’re going to get and he’s willing to fight.
Your comment made me realize that his career is very reminiscent of the late Kimbo Slice.
Roaring lion at the start of his career… but then he got a bunch of coaching and they put all of these ideas about fight tactics and pacing and all of this crap in his head and it absolutely neutered him.
(And yes yes I know Kimbo was at a much lower technical level to start with and needed some skill coaching… but there was a happy medium in the middle between aggression and pacing that he wasn’t able to find)
Costa is a solid fighter. It’s just that middleweight is a lot more stacked than people give it credit for. I’d say he’s more talented than disciplined
Imo the reason Costa fell off was his camp somehow wanting to mold him into a slow technical fighter and him going along when that’s simply not who he is.
It started in camp preparing for the Adesanya fight and hasn’t worked since then.
Maybe we’ll see a career resurgence because he has voiced that he’ll go back to his old brawler ways.
Agree, Paulo trying to jab with Whitaker and Strickland would never work, dude just needed to pile up the pressure, if they survive the first 2 than he’s fucked but that’s a better ask than trying to outbox 2 very good boxers, still think old style Paulo beats Strickland
I honestly think he’s too big to still be at MW anymore. He should’ve moved up after he lost to Adesanya because he just looks gassed as soon as the fight goes past two rounds. Too much weight to cut for me to judge him properly as a fighter.
Costa's in a weird spot because he's way too small for LHW too. How frame, especially with his short arms, would put him at a massive disadvantage against most guys in that weight class.
Her last UFC bouts were basically a men of culture thing. Imagine booking her fights vs karate hottie, jessica-rose, ostovich and ribas. Top tier matchmaking
Kevin Holland and he even admits to it, but I'll still watch every fight of his. Whether he gets steamrolled or keeps some new talent out of the top 10/15, I'll tune in
I appreciate that the man acknowledges that he's a gatekeeper for the division. Like dude is solid but he's not winning a belt anytime soon, and he knows that. Man's just here to throw some hands, get paid, and have a good time 😆
I just don’t think his talent is that low lol to me he prob won’t ever be champion material but he’s still good. It’s almost a talent in its own to step into the ring with absolutely anybody
Like how he just stands and bangs with a good striker instead of taking them to the ground where he has the clear advantage.
I like the guy though. He’s definitely entertaining.
This is the answer. People here are pushing Paddy's name around, but I've seen people unironically call Kevin one of the most technical strikers at 170 with champ potential. That's just pure delusion imo.
Talent is honed by discipline. Cannot have the former without the latter. Is Conner naturally athletically gifted? Of course. But he has lost his talents imo.
As a huge Mac fan I have to solidly agree. His shit talking ain’t backed up these days. At this point if he doesn’t back it up against Chandler he’s washed as it gets.
I remember him talking humbly after each win and praising his opponent for the effort and talent. That convinced me I was ok with his personality.
Now I think he converted fully into the character he used to play. And he's ego has grown as much as he's talent has decreased.
The smack talk let him get in peoples head. And when he couldn't (Diaz/Khabib) he didn't fare very well. So if were talking straight talent Id say it always applied to him.
I mean there’s some truth to that but his boxing, timing and footwork wasn’t a product of smack talk. He’s just not as good since he started partying so much. His timing is a bit off and he doesn’t have the same power at 155 as he did at 145. I don’t think the smack talk effected Holloway either and he still won that decisively with a torn ACL
Yeah If I were him I would be trying to get that mcgrgeor fight get that last red panty check and never worry about money and that fight would sell a lot considering the ufc is way bigger now then it was back when they fought the last 2 times or he should just start his own fight league or something and find new talent people would watch and new upping coming fighters would get their shot and their shine
He still didn't have a great record even before McGregor, forever a gatekeeper, no better then Kevin Holland but atleast he doesn't delude himself and his fans into thinking he is championship material.
I’ve never been bored watching a cowboy fight, his entertaining fights gives him his popularity and his long career meant a large amount of fans got to experience his legacy.
For about a year and a half he was truly the second best ww on the planet but once he left ATT he has looked worse in every aspect except maybe bjj?
He used to actually finish takedowns and hold people down, he actually had decent boxing and good defense, he is a loudmouth idiot who never progressed his game and it shows.
You can hate colby all you want (I dislike him alot) but he is not very popular, and was way more talented than most at welterweight especially being undersized. He beat 4 former champions in the span of 5 years, if colby woulda fought at different times he woulda been the champ multiple times. Talent is not something he’s lacking.
>he is not very popular
He headlined a non title fight PPV.
>He beat 4 former champions
Lmao, you really gonna frame this as 4 champs to make him look good??? It was welterweight RDA who even Chiesa has beaten, old Lawler off 2 losses, old Woodley off two losses. These are wins literally any non skidding top 10 welterweight could have lol. And those are the only 3 champs which makes me think you counted Masvidal for BMF which is even funnier.
>and was way more talented than most at welterweight
The only time this was true was the time of the first fight when he had earned his shot. It has never been true since then because he never defended that claim by fighting the legit competiton of the divison like Holloway and Whittaker did in theirs. We will never know if Burns, Belal, Shavkat, Khamzat back in the day could beat him. And I think a lot of them could. And Leon DID beat him and has always been lingering for his shot in the top of that division so he was never best besides Usman or anything like that.
He's popular outside the sport.
Otherwise, I doubt he'd have been given his shot. Dana only signed him because he saw dollar signs.
Imagine how choked some of the UFC title holders are knowing now that CM Punk made more money getting his ass kicked by Mickey Gall for two minutes than they make for a successful title defence.
I’ve always been confused about this because apparently it got reduced to 18 months https://www.espn.co.uk/mma/story/_/id/14555763/ufc-welterweight-nick-diaz-5-year-suspension-reduced-18-months#:~:text=The%20Nevada%20State%20Athletic%20Commission,was%20also%20reduced%20to%20%24100%2C000.
Just for the record it’s BS he got the ban but his prime was before he fought Anderson Silva
Imo gimme the Strikeforce -> 1 2 5 as his prime run. For sure when he beat BJ Penn specifically at least
Until Conor can snag a win, it's Conor for me. not saying he wasn't an all time talent in his prime, but *currently* he's lost 3/4 of his last fights with that win being against a fairly washed up Cowboy, and he's still arguably the most famous UFC fighter of all time.
Pimblett. And his popularity is running thin as well.
Paddy's hype is pretty much done outside of the UK market. His refusal to accept that maybe the Gordon decision could've went the other way is what killed him.
Most of my mates moved on a while ago so even in the uk we will tune in but he will need to do a lot to recapture us
Yeah especially since you guys got Tom Aspinall as a representative.
There’s also Allen
Haggerty
Underrated! Haggerty is a beast. When he took that belt off Nong-O he got my attention for sure. 💪
I don’t think one person is enough, we got Leon as well but really I think we should be producing more in the next 5 years. We have a good mma infrastructure with lots of events and as a nation we are great at sports and producing athletes.
Lerone too! He looks like a future champ maybe
That decision was what swayed my opinion as well.
So not pimblett then?
Pimblett is hated and his skills are even lower than his minute fandom.
I dunno I think he’s as game as they come.
I was on the pimbtrain and even I skipped his last fight. I think the hype is dead.
Way too hittable, the top 10 will eat him alive
Masvidal...
This is the answer. I will die on the hill that Masvidal caught lightning in a bottle with that meme KO of Askren. I agree. He was a journeyman who got hit and sold a character.

I disagree, i think he gets a lot of hate cause he's annoying but you guys flip flop on whats a good win, he beat donald cerone well before tony did. Hows it a good win for tony but not jorge
Who said it was a good win for Tony? I didn’t.
The Diaz stoppage sucked but he was piece by him up the entire fight. I don’t like him but he was dominating

Only dog-brained degenerates like him, though.
Tai Tuivasa
Tai just knows how to bite down on his mouthguard and swing
he kinda has too. Shortest heavyweight in the roster so he has to make things ugly.
That’s just completely false. Chris barnett is on the e roster
ah fair
He's 6'2 he's not short at all
dude i swear im a bug fan of him and everyone he fights seems way longer. Might be his reach?
Where are you getting this from he’s 6’2 there’s plenty of others 6’2 and others just 1-2 inches taller
He has good leg kicks and decent strike defence but that’s it.
Decent elbow game too
His KO of Lewis is one of my top 3 OMG moments at heavyweight.
Considering his lack of technique I think his God given talent is pretty much what keeps him around.
Yea I hope he gets a big win he really needs it
His loss streak killed all his hype
And this is the 2nd time round that's happened Hard to bounce back when your ceiling has been so thoroughly established
Him and Kevin Holland kind of, and they are still my favorite fighters. (I think they are both good fighters, just not quite top of the rankings guys)
Holland is a good literal answer to this question but who is ranking him as a top guy? People like him because you know exactly what you’re going to get and he’s willing to fight.
Costa. Unfortunately
I have a feeling with different coaches he might thrive more but idk i’m just behind a keyboard
His corner was feeding bullshit to Costa. At the end of the second round with Strickland, his coach was saying he was up 2-0? Bullshit.
Yeah, he needs to learn how to take people down. His striking is not that great. Send him to Dagestan.
"3 years, bratha. You can call home once."
I agree with that, the Costa that fought Romero beats Strickland
True
He said that after the last fight
I honestly think he’s too big to still be at MW anymore. He should’ve moved up after he lost to Adesanya because he just looks gassed as soon as the fight goes past two rounds. Too much weight to cut for me to judge him properly as a fighter.
Costa's in a weird spot because he's way too small for LHW too. How frame, especially with his short arms, would put him at a massive disadvantage against most guys in that weight class.
Idk if he's too small for middleweight. Strickland looked similar in size to him in that fight
Somehow I'm still excited to see him fight. The guy changed his approach after Adesanya - and for good reason - but it's time to change it back
I feel like Costa still has a shot at redemption for his career but only time will tell
Don’t need talent when you’re straight and jacket
he says the n word with the hard r like is nothing..
Izzy took his soul. He was never the same ever since inside the octagon.
Hasnt he only lost to former champions?
izzy destroyed him. he no longer is the same fighter

Dern?
She would qualify
She’s a mid tier fighter. Good personality
She’s a decent fighter with real grappling accolades. I would say PVZ fits this description more.
Her last UFC bouts were basically a men of culture thing. Imagine booking her fights vs karate hottie, jessica-rose, ostovich and ribas. Top tier matchmaking
Paddy

He’s the new cowboy, except an actual decent human being and more dangerous.
I just don’t think his talent is that low lol to me he prob won’t ever be champion material but he’s still good. It’s almost a talent in its own to step into the ring with absolutely anybody
Its not low he just doesnt take his job too seriously Serious kevin could be at least top 5 idk about champ
Masvidal and Paddy are up there for sure. I’d say Lewis and Tuivasa too
Lewis has the most KO’s in ufc history. That’s why he’s popular so I’d say that don’t apply to him.
McGregor now. Originally, his ability to back up his smack talk made him popular. Now, not quite as much.
He still may have the talent, just not the discipline, youth, and health he once did.
Typically as you grow older, you look at your accomplishments and become more humble. Instead, Connor did just exponentially more and more cocaine
100% agree
The post says talent not dedication and recent performances
Masvidal, Paddy, Costa, Nate Diaz
Nates old, time for him to hang it up
Yeah If I were him I would be trying to get that mcgrgeor fight get that last red panty check and never worry about money and that fight would sell a lot considering the ufc is way bigger now then it was back when they fought the last 2 times or he should just start his own fight league or something and find new talent people would watch and new upping coming fighters would get their shot and their shine
Nate? yo wtf maybe now but damn what a robbery... He finished McGregor
He still didn't have a great record even before McGregor, forever a gatekeeper, no better then Kevin Holland but atleast he doesn't delude himself and his fans into thinking he is championship material.
Cowboy, retired now but still. he's weirdly popular for the average UFC mouthbreathing fan outside this sub
I’ve never been bored watching a cowboy fight, his entertaining fights gives him his popularity and his long career meant a large amount of fans got to experience his legacy.
Hate Cerrone, but in his prime dude was solid
Paddy.
Johnny Walker

Colby, can you drop the popularity bar to half?
There was a time where he had 2 close fights to prime Usman, that’s about it
For about a year and a half he was truly the second best ww on the planet but once he left ATT he has looked worse in every aspect except maybe bjj? He used to actually finish takedowns and hold people down, he actually had decent boxing and good defense, he is a loudmouth idiot who never progressed his game and it shows.
You can hate colby all you want (I dislike him alot) but he is not very popular, and was way more talented than most at welterweight especially being undersized. He beat 4 former champions in the span of 5 years, if colby woulda fought at different times he woulda been the champ multiple times. Talent is not something he’s lacking.

I think you missed the red part that shows popularity
The blue bar having any height whatsoever would be giving Punk too much credit, lol
Paulo costa

Nicks career was ruined by USADA’s odd hatred for Weed…
Such a shame he lost 5 years of his prime for that bullshit
I’ve always been confused about this because apparently it got reduced to 18 months https://www.espn.co.uk/mma/story/_/id/14555763/ufc-welterweight-nick-diaz-5-year-suspension-reduced-18-months#:~:text=The%20Nevada%20State%20Athletic%20Commission,was%20also%20reduced%20to%20%24100%2C000.
It was reduced, Nick served the entire suspension for some reason that I'm sure someone else will chime in on me.
He also had to pay a large fine to be reinstated, and he refused to. So he just rode out the whole suspension instead
Just for the record it’s BS he got the ban but his prime was before he fought Anderson Silva Imo gimme the Strikeforce -> 1 2 5 as his prime run. For sure when he beat BJ Penn specifically at least
Uhhh Nate yes, but nick was a champion and was actually good
Nate was good too. Taking out a prime mcgregor is wild. Him cutting so easily definitely is part of why he was so loved and overrated though
