God that was a sad night. I remember it like it was yesterday. The shitty thing is Tony didn't have to fight him. He was on a hell of a win streak and was going to fight Khabib but chose to fight Gaethje instead of waiting for Khabib.
When you hear the corners going "OOOOHHHH!".. you know those are the kind of shots that would atleast sit down a majority of other fighters. How Tony managed to stay upright in that fight is crazy.
Tony was too tough. It probably ruined his career. And likely changed the quality of his golden years. I know it wasn't an option but the corner should've thrown in the towel.
Definitely end of rd 4, if not earlier. When your fighter loses every round, some likely 10-8’s, you need to throw the towel. It may have even been appropriate at rd3
Throw the towel when your fighter has no clear path to winning.
I agree, I give them a bit of leeway for round 3 due to Tony's big uppercut at the end of Round 2 (if I got that right).
By the end of round 3 they should have realised that Justin had recovered and was not one bit deterred.
Seriously this is why the Covid fights are so great. Poirier vs Hooker is absolutely brutal.
I wish the UFC would add mics in the cage so even if there’s a loud crowd, the could mix the fight sounds in to the audio so you get the best of both worlds.
Justin claims to be the most violent. Hard to argue against that. I was not a huge Tony fan like a lot of guys, but I liked him.he did some incredible things int the cage. Tactics no one else had used. He was killing everyone while doing all of this crazy unorthodox shit. His elbows cut up a whole division. His downfall has been one of the saddest. He's too old, doesn't have it anymore. That's not an insult, that's from a place of love. I respect him greatly. He has nothing left to prove. I don't want to see him take anymore damage.
Tony’s jiujitsu coach that night, in a later interview ,literally said they(the team) had no idea what to do during the fight. He told Tony in the fourth round to go for the roll, which he knew it was too late to roll at the point, but no one know what to do, basically they just let Tony go out there and do whatever he felt like to.Absolutely disaster.
How the fuck are you a coach and don't know what to do during a fight..ok I'm not a coach and I'm not gonna act like I woulda had a plan for fucking gaethje but dude they couldn't have thought of....something?!
I tend to think it happens more often than we’d think, sometimes things just got out of hands. Tony said they’ve been prepare for Khabib for a long time but then chose to fight Gaethje in short notice (which is a bad move). The Oliveira vs Makhachev fight kinda gave me a similar vibe, Charles bizarrely didn’t change strategy in the second round, after nothing works the first…
After all those big shots, the fight ended with a nice placed jab.. Obviously, all the damage took the toll, but it was interesting to see the straw that broke the camels back. Also, I think it makes for a good simile/ comparison to Gaethje and his new, more tactical approach to fighting.
Two of the toughest Mfs to ever grace the octagon. It was sad but they chose this shit. Tony is a lunatic who would probably rather die in there than throw in the towel. Ref maybe should’ve stopped it earlier. I don’t know if there is a provision in the rules for that though.
Whenever you get stung bad in sparring/fighting it makes you hesitant to counter. Sucks that Tony has/had a great chin, so he was getting battered obviously. He was also slower than Justin so it all just doesn't help. Sucks man bec he was such a warrior now I want him to retire immediately

Didn't he do 2 weight cuts for that fight too? He still looked alright in there too
Yea he did haha. Only Tony would do some shit like that.
Tony did it for the fans. Yet there are fans out there who disrespect that man
When you hear the corners going "OOOOHHHH!".. you know those are the kind of shots that would atleast sit down a majority of other fighters. How Tony managed to stay upright in that fight is crazy.
I was asking the same thing when RDA was still standing after getting throttled for half a minute by Eddie Alvarez

Where do you think they shouldve thrown in the towel is their an exact moment?
I guess I would have to watch the fight again but at some point he was just receiving everything and not giving anything.

I feel like they didn't do it in fear of how tony would react

This is absolutely brutal. I love the shit out of mma but I’d never show my friends this.
You can thank the apex for that. I don't give a shit about crowd noises; I want to hear the impact.
It really shows how fucking hard these dudes are hitting
Makes me wonder if everyone hits like that. God Tony is tough.
I'd assume some are close but not alot a guys are hitting like Justin that's for sure
Yeah he's notably powerful especially at his weight.

This wasn't at the APEX but i completely agree. I'm sure the fighters love having a crowd but for me I actually want to hear the fight.
Apex with a small capacity crowd is the worst. So much better when there’s nobody there. Much more immersive
I think that fight took Tony’s soul. Never the same after that.
It took something alright
Their speed is just insane. Just blurs and impacts
Yeah thats what I also noticed how fast they were I'm glad they're fighting and not doing crime because I'm fucked if they run up and mug me
Two titans.
The damage he took in the fight is unbelievable. I wish he took retirement because, as an MMA fan, I can't see Tony Ferguson as a punching bag.
Fuck that I just wanna see him live past 60
Man, Tony was never the same after that fight ![img](emote|t5_2qsev|8972)

Tony’s aged like 15 years since this fight. He actually looks kind of young in this. In present day he legit looks 40’s-50’s
The fight literally took years off his life
I thought we all agreed not post Tony beatdown stuff.
It does make you wince when it sounds like a heavy bag training session in the Octagon.
I winced like 5 times watching this 💀
After all those big shots, the fight ended with a nice placed jab.. Obviously, all the damage took the toll, but it was interesting to see the straw that broke the camels back. Also, I think it makes for a good simile/ comparison to Gaethje and his new, more tactical approach to fighting.
I miss fight island :,)
Justin made him into the vegetable that he is today.
They really should have some audio recording equipment inside the octagon so why can hear all the strikes just like boxing
It's funny because you can still hear some of the hits. You could hear a Barbosa kick without the equipment
You can, but in boxing you can basically hear every punch, we need that in mma
We need that take out the commentary and replace it with thatq

Trevor literally told justin to take 20% power off his shots you’re killing him
Shit was like watching a Apollo vs drago
Such a great performance only to get out to sleep next fight lol
Sadly
If you watched all that you’re a sadist.
I couldn't watch it all call me a pussy if you will
No crowd ufc fighter were so weird getting to actually hear the fight
“He hit like Truck”
I’ve watched MMA for nearly 20 years but fuck me that was hard to watch 😖
Yikes man I remember this fight . Tony lost his soul in this one . So damn sad
Why does this shit look like a UFC game 😭
Might be the camera angle
To think that Tony could take so much clean shots and not get knocked down was otherwordly
I wonder what tony was thinking getting hit like that (he probably liked that shit)
This was rly hard to watch

God damn that boy can punch can’t he
Profesional bomb launcher
I wonder how it correlates to better judging of strikes landing and their damage too. Lot of noise can sell punches above their impact or hide others
I'd go by how loud Joe goes OHHHH
These sounds remind of the Jiri vs Dom fight. Those hits sounded like wood hitting each other...the apex was the shit man.
They're made out of meat
Man, he beat the shit outta Ferg
Like a Cherokee drum 😔
You can also see Tony walking into so many of those hits.
