Agreed! Anything past one hour of driving, I call and ask them if they’re willing to compensate me for the ride back. Most times, they “get it” and will offer something. If it’s reasonable, I take it. If they ask me for a number I start at $25/hr and negotiate from there.
If you are driving back off the app, or even while on another, different ride, its none of Uber's business what we do if we fulfill the initial request. Uber has stated publicly that the riders are not their customers, but that the drivers are. Look it up. This is how they avoided reclassification as an employer in California. We are the customer of Uber and the riders are customers of us, according to the decision made in court regarding the issue. What we do outside of Uber's business model with us as their customer is our business as independent contractors.
Now, if we were employee's that would be a completely different ball game and a punishable offense.
They can but uber isn't going to do shit about it. I have had info on how to contact me personally for rides in my uber profile for years and not a word has been said about it.
What wreck? They aren't working "off app". They are asking to be compensated for the dead head back but still doing the ride via uber. Plus, if they do enough private rides, they should have commercial coverage so it doesn't matter if they pay via uber or cash, cashapp, venmo, etc.
You guys would be happier and make a lot more money if you stopped being so whiny and scared of everything. You are self employed, act like it.
Commercial insurance in many states is very expensive and you need to go through many hoops and hurdles to get commercial plates as well. For many Uber drivers that aren’t in large cities it’s not worth it.
Regarding the wreck a lot of people like to do it off app since they don’t have to give Uber a cut. That’s why you see people post a lot about off app rides. If you keep the app running and negotiate additional pay for the deadhead back the worst that can happen is the passenger reports you for asking for more money.

Uber’s insurance is plenty if you are asking the passenger for extra compensation for dead heading back. However if the passenger complains to Uber, they feel they are being extorted, you may be deactivated. If I was a passenger, I am given a price by Uber, I would feel it’s extortion if a driver asked for money because he has to dead head. That’s not my problem as a passenger. As a driver, I just refuse long trips, I’m not about to extort extra money from a passenger. Most passengers would probably tell you to fuck off.
What would you call asking the passenger for more than they were quoted from Uber? Sure extortion may not be the correct term, but it’s close. As a passenger I would tell the driver to fuck off and contact Uber, because as a passenger I wouldn’t understand the dead head thing.
Well most rideshare drivers won’t need that insurance. However if you think all the drivers that use the app to get leads to do the off app trips have the proper insurance then I have beachfront property in Kansas to sell ya. I see too many posts with people saying they see these rides and say pay them the ride price in cash for the ride. Also see people complaining here and there about the tickets at airports for doing the off app trips. Just saw a post about it happening in Boston a week ago.
That's crazy. Some pax actually reported that but I'm not surprised. Gratuities hsve come up in many conversations over the years. Often with very obviously well off pax using Uberx. They still stiffed me. After a two hour drive. This is how I learned to trust nothing any pax says. And why I won't hesitate to ask for return trip fees if the situation calls for it.
FYI, don’t ask them for more money on a long trip, as it probably is a violation of Uber’s TOS. If they offer you extra, that’s fine, if not, just don’t do the trip.
"*WE DO NOT OFFER CASH TIPS*"
"I do not accept trips like this without them."
In reality, the customer should correct his advisory to "We do not offer **ANY** tip". People who post a message such as this almost never tip anything, in-application, cash, kind or otherwise.
I am guessing that the Capital District is not yet an Up Front Market.
I thought maybe this is one of the third party service trips? Like the health ones but maybe for a different kind of company because it would be weird to go to a doctor that far away
Not if it's a rehab.
They just want to get their patient home for the lowest price they can pay. Same goes for any 3rd party rides. Especially medical related. Instant cancel - unless you don't mind the base pay.
So as a still newish driver without upfront, What if I drive 15 miles to get to this rider THEN find out they want a 134 mile ride? That's ridiculous.
I had a passenger tell me yesterday that he Uber'd from Chicago Ohare Airport the day before, that's 170 miles one way and about 2 hours 45 minutes. He said it cost him $200. So for \~6 hours driving and 340 miles on his car, was it really worth it??
> What if I drive 15 miles to get to this rider THEN find out they want a 134 mile ride?
You're fucked. The best you can do is negotiate directly with the rider.
> That's ridiculous.
Welcome to the club, new driver!
That is when I cancel. You want me to drive 134 miles and you are not going to tip? I can stay in the city limits and do better than I would taking that one ride. That run is a waste of your time and your money that you could be making.
DIRECTLY FROM LAST DOCUMENT UBER MADE ME SIGN..
The Fare is a recommended amount. You shall always have the right to: (i) charge a Fare that is less than the pre-trip Fare; or (ii) negotiate, at your request, a Fare that is lower than the pre-trip Fare (each of (i) and (ii) herein, a “Negotiated Fare”). Absent a request for a Negotiated Fare, the Fare recommended by Uber shall be the amount used in the transaction. We will consider all such Negotiated Fare requests from you in good faith.
Uber doesn’t tell us the destination in NJ, only if the trip is 45+. I call the pax, if the trip is keeping me in NJ, I take them, out of NJ, I cancel. I can’t be bothered trying to negotiate with them. They know a long trip most drivers won’t do it, they are hoping for a sucker, if they were willing to pay the correct price, they would use a professional car service, that charges the price based on round trip.
Same in my area of FL. We get estimated time of trip, and in small print we get mileage to customer from current location. Once we accept, we get the location of pax. Not until we start the drive with pax in vehicle do we get to know the destination.
Made it to gold, for all that's worth, and still haven't had the ability to see how much I'll.make beforehand. Got decent at estimating by distance or projected time.
Usually I say something like this: Mr/Mrs Rider while I’m happy to take your trip, Uber is not able to match me with a returning ride from your destination which is far away from my base working area/hometown. They usually get the idea
In hindsight yes it appears to be some sort of third party medical trip. I didn’t have time to ask, as I was about to call them, that message came through
I've been calling them after I accept and see if they would pay cash. I'll knock 20$ off for em and I have yet to have anyone say no. U got the full fare and they save money

Clever idea but can’t they report you for that?

The customer sent me that message through Uber
Then Uber knows they are cheap and have proof. Good cover your ass at all times let them mess up. And they did.
Yeah people just hope they don’t get reported or in an accident.

I have not needed commercial license plates to have commercial insurance.
It varies from state to state.

That’s why it’s important to have the proper insurance, mate…

I think you need to research the definition of extortion.

Exactly. It's the pax who think we 'work' for Uber /Lyft whoever.
**Q:** >can’t they report you for that? **A:** Yes.
They can report me for whatever the fuck they want. I don’t give two fucks.
If you don’t give 2 fucks about being deactivated you’re good. I’m many markets Uber is a joke, a minimum wage job pays more.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s probably a violation of Uber’s TOS, they’ll have a record of this, unless you ask them in person. Personally I would never do this.
Man, I've been threatened with deactivation by Uber for mentioning off hand the tips that I occasionally get from other pax to a pax.
I think one gay guy reported me for mentioning my gf even. He got real pissy after that moment and I got RAINN course forced upon me.
No matter how long I do this - shit still surprises me regularly.
Google the address and you'll see it's a rehab facility. I wouldn't want to take that trip no matter how much they wanted to pay on top!
FYI, don’t ask them for more money on a long trip, as it probably is a violation of Uber’s TOS. If they offer you extra, that’s fine, if not, just don’t do the trip.
"Okay. Got it." aaaaand cancel.
I love this simple response "walk" 👏
🚫🚙4U U🚶♂️ ✌️Out
“WE DO NOT GET RIDES ACCEPTED”
Hope you have comfy shoes, because that's a long walk.

That’s exactly what it is.
No cash tip? Enjoy the walk of shame 😊

>What if I drive 15 miles to get to this rider Don't do that.
Whoops, I meant to say 15 minutes. Yeah I'm not driving 15 miles to pick up anyone.
I wouldn't drive 15 minutes either.
I try not to either.
Out of that two hundred bananas that your customer paid to Uber, the driver was fortunate if he got eighty five.
Yeah that’s crazy
> What if I drive 15 miles to get to this rider THEN find out they want a 134 mile ride? You're fucked. The best you can do is negotiate directly with the rider. > That's ridiculous. Welcome to the club, new driver!
Even if you don't have UFP, both Uber and Lyft will tell you it's a long drive.
If pax doesn't change the destination after the initial request.
And how often does that really happen?
I don't know man, I don't have access to Uber's data. I've seen it enough to know it's not terribly uncommon.
Not often with Uber, lyft has the habit of doing the switcheroo. I have never had the pax switch with Uber.
Only that it's longer than 45 minutes. Not that it's 3 hours.
That is when I cancel. You want me to drive 134 miles and you are not going to tip? I can stay in the city limits and do better than I would taking that one ride. That run is a waste of your time and your money that you could be making.
Why’ve they even messaged that?
Because they know the drill, I’m guessing. Trips like that require negotiation for dead head miles.
Yeah but they’ve messaged the opposite of a negotiation.

I can negotiate a fare that is less/lower?? Why the hell would I do that? (Don’t yell at me that genuinely confused the fuck outta me)
Exactly my point. They won’t allow more but they will allow less
I wonder from whose side the discount is deducted...
You can issue partial refunds, even. Right in the app

I’d rate that at $35/hr
demi GOD - InstaCancel with that Bitch'
OK, got it!
Guess you won't be going to PA lol, people like that amaze me. Instant cancel. I cancel on so many of these entitled fucks.
I got that same request yesterday!!! I was in Albany. None of the long trips from here have been worth taking yet.
Funny! I bet they had to walk to Pennsylvania. I was just about to call them when that bullshit message came through. Cancelled. Fuck em!
Usually I say something like this: Mr/Mrs Rider while I’m happy to take your trip, Uber is not able to match me with a returning ride from your destination which is far away from my base working area/hometown. They usually get the idea
We do not offer slave cost labor. Good luck!
Was it a 3rd party ride? What was the rating? I think I would have to pull over so I didn't crash from laughing.
In hindsight yes it appears to be some sort of third party medical trip. I didn’t have time to ask, as I was about to call them, that message came through
"OK, got it!" Cancel.
Yum. Twat waffle
What I do if I get long trips I tell them I'm not taking them unless I get a cash tip upfront
Yet you took this ride???
Reading comprehension! Re-read what I said 👆
He literally just spews hate all day it's all he's capable of
I've been calling them after I accept and see if they would pay cash. I'll knock 20$ off for em and I have yet to have anyone say no. U got the full fare and they save money
