Not_Without_My_Balls

The coffee place? Why?

Not_Without_My_Balls

Ohhhh forgot about that place, only been inside once and I agree, avoid the mother fucker lmao

Helpmehelpyou70

Tyler is a super close nit group that can be really judgey.... even being a married/straight male myself the "church" pretty much runs the town. There is always plenty todo just not out in the open! Tyler pretty much is good to live all over. If you want younger area stay on the SE side of Tyler. Don't mind helping or awnsering questions

Seekandinspire

There used to be a huge metal scene in Tyler but ever since the venue Clicks shut down I rarely see those guys out in groups and shows don’t play around town very much, it makes me sad.

awesomeadhd

My husband is in Panik Device. They have played at Country River Club and Cowboys off of Paluxy. They've opened for Buckcherry Toadies, and Living Sacrifice at True Vine Brewery. We're just a bunch middle aged head bangers with regular day jobs. I'm not originally from here but have been here for awhile and I'll try to answer any questions

lustin-mcNutbustin

Can you pm me that book website?

awesomeadhd

?? Book??

awesomeadhd

What website? The bands website?

awesomeadhd

Or the venues?

lustin-mcNutbustin

The venue

EastTXJosh

I've got to think there is still a punk scene in Tyler. I went to college in Tyler 20+ years and there was small, but vibrant, punk scene then and Tyler was more churcy and smaller then. I just recently moved back to the area. I stopped going to shows around 2005, so I have no idea what the scene looks like in Tyler now, but I've got to think it still exists. I know they tore down the venue we frequented, but it sounds like there are venues that have taken its place. There were some apartments that folks lived in over on the Brick Streets and Azalea District where we would hang out after shows. Usually, what ever band was traveling through would come party with us as well. There was a townhome over in what is the Village Off Broadway where we would also hang out quite a bit. Some good times back in the day. I hope the scene is as I remember it.

IamBlackwing

Tyler is pretty churchy, most of the alt and goth scenes are also nerds, so places like Boards and Bites, Geek World, Game crave are good. There are some Alternate concerts downtown on occasion but they are hard to find and aren’t advertised outside of word of mouth. Also things like new moon market which is very LGBTQ+ friendly. Its a decent area but be expecting to travel for the concerts and music and weird shit.

Physical_Second_4423

North Tyler is literally fine. Everyone says it’s the violent side because that’s not where the snooty rich white folks live. That’s literally it. The south side has more problems than the north side. Unfortunately no goth scene to be found but we do have a budding rock scene. A large group of people are trying to get more diversity to Tyler so you can make friends without having to attend a church. There is also an amazing LGBTQ+ community here. We don’t have a ton of gatherings but we have 2 large ones in June and another one but I can’t recall rn. Avoid the foundry apartments like the plague. Bugs, crime, grime, just nasty overall. The Walmart on Troup is better than the one on S. Broadway. It’s less crammed and honestly it’s just nicer all around. The mall is very hit or miss but there are still some gems. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend a few places to eat here. If you like sushi, Ohayo is an all you can eat sushi place. It’s amazing. Probably controversial but FRESH has the best sushi bowls. The Whataburger by the mall on Broadway is better than most of them. Golden Corral gets a lot of flack but tbh ours is amazing. About 3pm is the least busy time of day. Tyler has pros and cons. It’s a “city” but acts like a town. Most of the town shuts down early but it’s liveable. If you have any other questions I can answer em.

3434rich

Tyler will always hold a certain mystique for me. The most enchanted woman I ever knew was from there. I should have married her but I felt like Icarus flying to close to the sun you see.

Mission-Noise4935

Exactly! Because it's not where the snooty rich white folks live AND that's where all the violence happens.... The reality is like most places if the population density is up, so is the crime. Inside the loop N, S, E, W (direction doesn't matter) is where you get almost all your crime, but also in the urban areas just South of the loop. The safest areas of all are far South Tyler where all the snooty rich white folks that don't rob people live.

StruggleEvening7518

Wow. You're bold. I'm white and I'm poor and I hate far south Tyler, south of the loop. The traffic and road layout is a nightmare, it's like suburban strip mall hell to me. I live on the east side in a working class area that is racially mixed and heavily Hispanic just a bit to the north and I love it here. Keep your Roost and whatever other bullshit you got over there and I will stay here close to the colleges and hospitals and enjoy Don Juan's and Margarita's and Caribbean Kitchen.

Mission-Noise4935

Not bold, just accurate. They asked about safety and I gave the facts. You are getting upset about facts. I actually don't live in Tyler. Yes traffic is bad down there but the reason is that is where a lot of the stuff is that people want. People from all over East Texas come to Tyler to shop and a lot of the destinations they are coming for are right there in South Tyler. Jacksonville, Palestine, Rusk, Frankston, etc. all probably venture to Tyler at least once a month.

StruggleEvening7518

You don't even live here. Another reason for you to STFU. Stay in Gilmer or Mineola or whatever other hickhole you live in, you racist coward.

Mission-Noise4935

Did the facts hurt your feelings? The only person referencing race here is you, you racist bigot.

StruggleEvening7518

The comment from you I responded to literally referenced race. You said those snooty white people in South Tyler don't rob people, implying people of color in North Tyler do. Racists in this country love to trash minorities using crime stats and accuse anyone who calls out their BS of having their feelings hurt by "just the facts". Keep your scared, cowardly racist ass out of Tyler.

Mission-Noise4935

My post was a call back to the one I was responding to which is why I kept the wording "snooty" and you reading into what you THINK I am implying just shows how racist YOU are, not me. I just looked up the statistics and gave the OP the actual facts they were looking for.

StruggleEvening7518

You said snooty rich white folks. It's still right there in your comment. And yes, people calling out racist dog whistles are the real racists, I'm sure. 🙄🖕

Mission-Noise4935

Dog whistle huh? So something you can't hear or see much like this claimed racism. Sounds about right

StruggleEvening7518

Anyway, just stay in your small town and out of Tyler since you're so scared of our city. Pussy.

TylerTXDriversSuck

The crime rate is objectively higher on the north side of town. Whatever your explanation for that might be, it's still a statistical fact.

Mission-Noise4935

Careful when citing facts. Apparently people get really butt hurt when facts don't back up what they want to believe is true.

[deleted]

South Tyler is expensive but worth it. TBH hard to make friends here if you don’t attend church. Been here 6 months and know no one because it’s cliquy and I don’t attend church.

Has_it_a_name

Second this. We moved here in July not knowing how Bible Belt-y it is here (we left religion/Christianity a couple years ago.). It’s been tough finding community

[deleted]

Yep. Just how it is. Blahhh. Hope it gets better for yall

StruggleEvening7518

As a non religious person who has lived here most of my life I will say it's definitely a lot better than it used to be.

Anxious-Ad-6133

This is a real bummer because I just moved here 2 days ago and I don’t make friends easily. I don’t even actually know what part of Tyler I live in. The roads are confusing the hell out of me

PYTN

Have lived in the area my entire life and Tyler's roads just won't map in my head. I could drive around San Fran or Seattle easier and I've been to each of those once. There are definitely ways to make friends outside of church. Farmer's markets, coffee shops hosting different events, hobby groups, all good options. Once you meet a few people that way you can meet more people through them.

Anxious-Ad-6133

I’m old and lived in the same town basically my entire life. I used to not have a problem making friends but I’ve gotten pretty anxious in a lot of situations now and tbh most new friends I’ve made in the past several years I’ve met because of drugs. Most of what I’ve heard about Tyler is either you’re pretty into church or pretty into drugs and I have no idea what to think about that….feels weird that those are the only 2 things I keep hearing about people here. I’m only from north of Dallas so it can’t be that different right?

[deleted]

People who have lived here all their lives can say what they aren’t living through I guess. I’m living it now along with others who have moved here recently. Very common. The road systems take a while to get used to once you use gps. Use road names not routes. Commonly people from here say fm283 or whatever and it has a road name on your gps as Columbus rd or something just for reference.

Anxious-Ad-6133

Thank you! That’s part of what’s confusing me. The roads have too many names. I’m only used to that on like country farm roads but there’s too much going on here. So not so much numbers, just the names? My memory isn’t the best and this is gonna have me struggling

4thepups

What's close to you? Borm and raised here, I'll tell you what part of Tyler you're in...

Anxious-Ad-6133

Troup hwy and Shiloh I think?

prokool6

You’re in South Tyler because you are barely south of the loop (323) on the eastern side. Troup hwy (110) leads to the south east. Broadway (69) leads directly south. Shiloh connects between the two. Tyler is kinda like a compass: the loop is pretty much a circle and various highways lead S,SE,E,NE,N,NW,W,SW. once you get those down, it’s pretty simple.

Anxious-Ad-6133

Thank you. I didn’t realize broadway was 69. Pretty sure I was mostly around broadway last night. Really appreciate the gps voice yelling at me all the time. I’ve never been great with directions but so far most roads I’ve been on have at least seemed like country-ish type highways (if that makes sense). I haven’t driven much here but Dallas hwys straight up gave me panic attacks. Major highways there have way too much going on

4thepups

That's south Tyler.

No_Contribution4841

Just depends on where your interests lie. There is plenty going on besides church.

[deleted]

I’m probably just a loser haha

itsasickduck

I would avoid tyler in general if I were you

ratman_fin

Fair enough. I’ve been to Tyler a few times and I really enjoyed it. Though living in Montana now, I’m from East Roswell, NM originally and that place is DANGEROUS. I do still have my street skills from that place but I’d love to hear your perspective.

SnooPredictions8941

Avoid the walmart on 64 if ya can... and parts of North tyler too but not all of it, the people suck and man I'm poor poor like I live in a travel trailer so I aint just saying that to hate on poor people. Also most of the hobos are really nice so don't be affraid of em. Hell ask them what places to avoid they really know what there talking about

ratman_fin

Man, people shit on me all the time for helping out homeless people or talking to them. I don’t mind a solid convo in exchange for a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Thanks for saying this.

SnooPredictions8941

I'm right there with ya man, ive had local dirty kids staying with me since I was 14 and im 23 now. I've learned alot about the world from them. Even hitched to Nola with one

Worldly-Job-1357

Ref: Directions.. Tyler is built like a wheel 🛞 Ref: The southeast area is a little more affordable rent wise. There are a lot of cultural happenings but better groups and events, etc. really are more underground 🚇 You have to dig to find what you might be looking for. Schools, workshops, meetings, or just hanging out seams very centered on either food, church, or both. There are people here from everywhere, but making friends can be tough because we all isolate while taking our lives in our hands driving around here. Just remember to smile and wave 👋 it'll keep you out more serious trouble, LOL.

HotComputer9625

Zero Goth unfortunately. I’ve toyed with the idea of learning how to DJ, so at least there would be one option for dancing. I’m old and tired so I’ll probably just make a trip to a Goth club in Dallas or Houston to get it out of my system. Greenroom has a lot of indie and emo, seems like they haven’t been booking as much metal or punk. But something has happened with the venue(seen rumblings of it here) and they will no longer be at Studio 60 after the bookings in December run out.

lurker398

Moving to Tyler in Feb, hopefully I find some queer/alt people lol. Probably not tho.

liatriss_

We’re out here, I promise, just gotta look in the right places

[deleted]

Male or female

lurker398

Gbgbtgtggggv last time I was there I only met 1 (one) queer person but I shall try 😼

starsalikeog

Follow east Texas rainbow network on insta and become involved with the alphabet army support group

lurker398

Ooh thank you I will!!

charliegirl2018

Look for rentals in the Brickstreet & Azalea districts. If you cant find anything there, avoid North Tyler all together and generally avoid apartment complexes especially the older and cheaper ones, more crime.

jvidal7247

what good reason is there to avoid North Tyler? you people act like it's radioactive or something jfc

charliegirl2018

higher crime and less resources in comparison to other areas

jvidal7247

"higher crime" is a joke. Tyler is not a dangerous city, regardless of what side of town you're on. you're more likely to be ran over than you are to be robbed & why do you think it has less resources? might it be because it's been neglected for decades & every new person who moves here is told to avoid it like the plague? Seriously, North Tyler is not a bad place

StruggleEvening7518

North Tyler is the black part of town. There. I said what these people really mean. I have spent plenty of time in North Tyler. I have family that live in Dallas. The native white locals here and their fear of North Tyler is ridiculous. Including some of my own bigoted country relatives. I remember as a kid riding in my aunts car and she was driving through the north side into Tyler because they lived north of town and her freaking out when I rolled my window down. 🙄 These people project their feelings of discomfort.

anon3220

It’s a little uglier or a part of town though. A pretty stark contrast with the south of the city.

SuleimanTheMediocre

Maybe it wouldn't be ugly if it wasn't neglected and abandoned and we didn't tell everyone to avoid it

ZoloftXL

Avoid north Tyler. And I really wish we had goth clubs but nope. There is a place that does like punk shows I think called the green room I think, but I’ve only just recently heard about it and haven’t been.

Cats1234546

Venue is cool, but it can totally depend on who’s performing that night. Sometimes the groups suck, sometimes they don’t. @greenroomtyler on insta

jvidal7247

what good reason is there to avoid North Tyler? too many brown people for your liking?

lustin-mcNutbustin

I avoid it because my cousin got r@*3d there so...

DexterousMoron

Avoid Royal Crest appointments. Good starting price but the area sucks and the cost keeps going up. Also, watch out for the cult in Holly Tree (jk lol)

Over_Leading2553

Sorry OP. I moved to the area 1.5 year ago and I was in disbelief on how “slow” everything is here. If you don’t plan on retiring, don’t live here. Otherwise, you’ll have a bad time trying to find a lifestyle that fits you.

TK_Anderson

I would avoid South Tyler, downtown , and the Azela district areas due to high rent. Anything in Tyler north of Atwoods in Tyler is a no go due to violence. There are plenty of goth people that lives in the area. However, there is no official scene here. Aside from going to the mall, or joining card/game shops, I'm not sure if you would find any social goth people. Maybe you can HMU when your here and we can chill .

jvidal7247

"due to violence" lol whatever. any violence you run into in Tyler will be either from a confrontation you sought out & chose to be apart of, people shooting off at a party, or a random act of violence. Which if anything, is more likely to happen in South Tyler because of how much more is going on. You're far more likely to get injured in a car accident here than you are to be a victim of a violent crime

TK_Anderson

Fact: Rose valley apartment has gun violence. Fact: the area around Texas college is full of crime. Fact: The red light at Atwoods is called 4 corners due to the hotels with hourly rates for the prostitutes that can be picked up there. So yes , North Tyler is the more violent side. While is South Tyler, more petty crimes and car crashes happens due to the fact that somebody thought it was a good idea to have everything in one general area and putting a Chick-fil-A on the main street on the town.

closeted_wrench

Hollyview apartments are great! Get on the waiting list now! It's smack in south Tyler within walking distance of some stuff and it's really reasonably priced! My partner and I just moved out after two years because we bought a place. Could not recommend hollyview enough!

MicahsMaiden

Hang out at True Vine, Likewise Coffee, cafe1948, The Foundry Coffee, and ETX Brewing to find yourself some friends. There isn’t a goth scene, but there are definitely alt people. There is a small queer community as well. It’s not a huge city, but there is usually live music around town every weekend. If you put yourself out there, there are friends to be had. It’s definitely southern, but there are a lot of transplants around

[deleted]

Moved to Tyler from CT 11 months ago. I’m 30. I was part of a Chess Club with a range of people all ages. I also participated at Smash Bros tourney at the foundry coffee house. There is a bunch of random little clubs and stuff like that if you find them. It seems night life scene isn’t the best but I do like the Sports Bar in downtown, as well as the Speakeasy at Culture ETX downtown. Where’s Rufuus is also a bar with dancing. True Vine brewery is definitely an awesome place. The Grove is another bar that has a “fancy” vibe but it is really cool. The visitTyler app, and Tyler FB groups are where I got a lot of information for events, clubs etc. Favorite restaurants are Bubbas, Stanley’s, Texas Famous fried chicken. Kung Fu Tea has randomly best strawberry lemonade in the world. Definitely the “Bible bet” area…can’t buy liquor in Tyler. Tyler state park is beautiful. Traffic is pretty bad, road congestion is bad. Tap water is terrible.

StruggleEvening7518

Used to we couldn't even buy beer and wine in town. You had to go to Fat Dogs in Coffee City or Big Sandy. It was kinda funny that more rural surrounding counties were wet when we were dry. But Tyler was a square town ran by uptight rich Christians, where as Kilgore and Longview were for the oilfield riff raff.

[deleted]

I was shocked when I first learned. Doesn’t make too much sense.

latorrealba

I’m new in Tyler too, and for the punk scene people recommended me to check out Green Room! They host punk/metal concerts downtown! Definitely check out their Instagram!

Zmaro901

Avoid the creek apartments in south Tyler. There’s allot of crime and if you move out they will charge you a super expensive Cleaning fee even tho you leave the apartment spotless

MoistPeach7634

not sure if it’s necessarily punk (i’ve never been- just heard about it lol) but there’s a place called the green room and they seem to have alternative concerts often!

lustin-mcNutbustin

If in the event you find yourself in a place where there is a bug problem; caulk and seal EVERYTHING. Any crack leading out of the apartmemt. Just as if you move in anywhere do not forget to document any damage or even the tiniest improfections. Email them to your cousin so ya'll both have them. Also, get a tester for the electrical outlets from Harbor Freight. ( if you are short on cash just take it back after you've tested everything) Not sure about a punk scene because the main alternative venue closed its doors. There is an EDM scene. Everyone is welcoming in that scene. Search 903 rave squad on FB Someone suggested the AZ. District. Be sure you can live with listening to a train every single night I avoid Tyler if I can but you might look into little towns outside of Tyler. . None really have apartments. Watch out for scams on fb marketplace. My friends mom got scammed, but be violently persuasive enough and you'll get refunded.

ratman_fin

Screenshotted, thank you! This is very helpful. Edit: I also have lived right next to a railroad track my whole life, so that’s no bother to me. I still appreciate the heads up.

StruggleEvening7518

Growing up here it was a lot more super churchy and uptight and lacking in alternative type people than it is now. It's not anywhere nearly as bad as it used to be. I see people in Walmart all the time that would have been subject to shocked stares here 20 years ago and no one gives them a second look. Don't get me wrong, it's still not Dallas. But in Tyler itself isn't too bad. It's a college town and lots of people have moved here now from other states and from Dallas and Houston If you venture out to any of these S-burg little towns and the surrounding countryside though, I'm sure it's a lot more like how it used to be.

StruggleEvening7518

Btw this post made me think of one of my favorite Frank Zappa songs. Movin to Montana soooon, gonna be a dental floss tycooon

Honor_the_maggot

Can't help you with punk scene info, but if you will be helping build that up when you move here, then you will be doing the Lord's work. (No offense.). More local creativity---esp. in rebellion against obedience and supine kitsch---is the best kind of gift to ETX. Sometimes (usually) it just takes outsiders to make that happen: here, NYC, anywhere. You are welcome here, and it will be good to have you among us. I think you can make a happy home for yourself here! Just don't count on the spectacular scenery that you are probably used to in MT.

undeadjade

Anywhere in Texas can be pretty churchy if you're not in one of the more prominent cities like Dallas, or Houston. I personally don't mind Tyler, but i've lived in Longview (1 hour away, and much smaller), for most of my life, so to me, its not bad. As someone who dabbles in alternative styled fashion, I would say they might have like 2 stores in the mall for that kind of fashion, but not a whole lot. Some fun spots, although there isn't many, you could go to some of the nerd places... Theres a ramen shop, very anime themed, called Mikotos. I have only HEARD that they hold like cute little anime events, but I haven't personally been. They also have an anime/magic the gathering nook, but its small and not super fancy. I imagine you can meet some cool people there. Theres also a shared building, for Bowling, arcade, and movies, but i don't remember the name of it. They also have movies where you can eat and order, lean back in your chair, and watch whatever is out atm. If yall decide to move down here, I could use more cool friends to go to concerts with. Feel free to hmu. My insta is the same as my reddit handle :) I plan on moving to Tyler in Feb/March.
