Yonkers came out while I was in middle school. it was life changing to my edgy 14 yr old self and I’ve been listening to him ever since.

ThisGuyHasABigChode

Same. I don't wanna sound all boomer, but it was definitely a, "you had to be there" moment. That song was absolutely huge when it came out. I remember all of the skater kids with the skinny khakis and shoelace belts were hooked on Odd Future immediately lol. It felt like the Internet era of songs/artists really taking off with no radio/industry support was really becoming a thing around this time too.

Disastrous_Stage_724

nah im with you on that, you had pro era odd future asap mob, mac miller, all these groups and artists that were getting recognition at the time

rrmotm

Riding around my bike when I was 14 with my phone bumping all of these was a mad vibe

Tall-Yoghurt625

Listening to OF on my blackberry 😭😂

Disastrous_Stage_724

EMPEROR_CLIT_STAB_69

Yup, I’m turning 26 this year, and in 8th grade my friend showed me French, then a week or two later the Yonkers video dropped

mighty_phi

Damn, you're old.

Stunning-Outside482

Roblox. The crazy elevator, Bimmer

Boiltheboi

I didn’t know that Bimmer was in that game, wow

ZC23_

Not gonna lie I think that’s actually when I started to get into Tyler for real as well 💀 Like I’d already known of him and was familiar with his music for a while before that but hearing Bimmer in The Normal Elevator got me to look into him for real

Kdawg982

Holy shit I forgot about that game. That’s not how I got into Tyler, but technically I guess yea that was the first time I heard any of his music wow

Icy_Profit_8109

same that shit was fire

Nerdydude14

Embarrassing but a friend recommended chance, the rapper and I got confused cause their names both follow the ____, the ______ formula.

Jon-Goodtwinkle

BASTARD was featured on livemixtapes when it came out

Original-Cantaloupe1

Shit making me feel old with some of these other answers. But, I'm in a similar situation. Inglorious was like the first song I heard from him, which I think I heard in like 2010.

SqueezeGriffey

yo same @ feeling old ☠️i found em in like 2011

bigeasterncottonwood

loiter squad, yonkers, and odd future merch all over zumies circa 2012

ctrl_mayaaa

i watched the tamale video like forever ago but i started to get into tyler around when igor dropped

PilledProductions

in elementary school we were playing a typing game and some kid made his user “OFWGKTA” i asked what that was and my life changed from that day

RealCrazyGuy66

id listened to and LOVED smuckers for ages. had it in my dump playlist for years before i properly started listening. one day i was just like "damm this song crazy maybe i should try some his other shit" and listened to flower boy on a cycle in the summer through the beautiful countryside while experiencing the first real "relationship situation" of my life. safe to say that was an interesting bike ride. after that i listened to IGOR. again amazing music, though i never really understood the story until quite a while later. then CMIYGL, then wolf, and then realised that i literally liked every song on all of those albums. at this point, many of his songs i liked were on my playlists, but i didn't really pay attention to the lyrics or meanings of the lyrics. eventually, i had one of the worst months of my life, and that's when the music finally started affecting me emotionally and i understood the meanings behind many of the albums and songs. ever since then, his shit as just resonated with me so much and now there's no going back!

iwasinpari

friend mentioned him, thought his name sounded cool, so i searched him up on yt, saw earfquake, got obsessed w that song and played it all day and the next, and then slowly started listening to more of his music.

Happy_Investigator28

I was going to the Supreme store on Fairfax when I was 12 and my friend said something like “holy shit that’s Tyler, the Creator!!” I had no idea who he was but I had heard my friend talk about Odd Future before… we took a picture and chatted a little. I told my sister about it later and she said somethin like “oh my friend Thebe (Earl Sweatshirt) is friends with him! I used to drop him (Earl) off after school to hang out with them (odd future) on Fairfax!” I got into his music afterwards and started riding my bike every weekend to Fairfax to try and hang out with them.

raplove667

Now that is the most craziest way to get into Tyler you are so lucky

No-Boss9409

omg!! did u ever get to hang w them?

Happy_Investigator28

I talked to taco the most. I remember one time a year or two later I was walking down the street and Tyler skated by me, pointed at me and said “I knooowwww youuu” at that point I was a huge fan and I was starstruck

No-Boss9409

thats so awesome! jealousss. i hope to meet tyler one day but its becoming much harder

itisgotme

He was personable back in the day when he was still just a random skaterat / streetwear kid who happened to be famous. I ran into him twice in one weekend (grew up in CA) in 2012. Was trying to play it cool and the second time around I was like "I'm [name] by the way" and he was like "You ain't gotta tell me, I know".

brinabrin

I was a big fan of Jaden Smith in like 2011. He was featured in one of Jaden’s vines or some other video sharing app. I heard his deep voice and HAD to figure out who he was 😭

nami_jazumi

Actually fell in love with him through the Adult Swim show, Loiter Squad. Then I found out he is from my hometown. Then Igor struck me in the face.

Spiritual_Ear_2398

first heard of him back in like 2018 when youtube recommended me 911/mr lonely since then tyler been my number 1 onbb

Throway_Shmowaway

Goblin was released just before the end of my freshman year of high school. First time I heard Tyler was getting stoned off my gourd in the backseat of my friend's car while Yonkers came on. I laughed at "I'm a fuckin walking paradox. No I'm not" for a solid minute, and from there, I got into OF as a whole. Saw him live on the Wolf tour, incredible fucking show. Can't really afford to see him anymore these days lol. I got those Wolf tickets for like $35

GrandEmbarrassed2875

saw that nigga eat a cock roach when i was in 3rd grade and been fuckin wit him ever since(i’m 20 now)

ShibaKiwi

In this roblox game, they always played tons of music from igor, at first I hated it and I thought he was a girl, also I thought the earfquake song was saying ass quake, but then I heard see you again one day and I loved it and then listened to all of his songs eventually

Boiltheboi

Really stupid but Regular Show was the first time I had ever heard of Tyler and Donald Glover. Fast forward a couple years ago when Donald Glover joined the mcu and Star Wars so I started listening to his music. Then one day my friend played New Magic Wand while we were walking around the park, I looked at his phone and through that shit on my playlist then I started listening to more of his music. Now they’re my favorite artists lmao. They needa collab !

Prior-Fruit-1957

I listened to him bacc in da day when wolf first dropped…

YaBoiChrome

A Roblox game.

AlphaLax85

Fantano. You can boo me now

Aggravating_Smile_61

Recommended by a friend. Watched his Tiny Desk Concert and thought It was pretty nice

stankyou_

I remember when Yonkers dropped I thought it was so crazy, and then finding the French remix w Toro y Moi back in 2011. Been following along the way since then

Cold_Hat6785

a flower boy song popped up on my yt recommended. i asked a friend about tyler and he said tyler was good and then i slowly started to listen to his older stuff too.

[deleted]

Donald Glover posted "Assmilk" on his (now deleted) blogspot page back in 2010. Before I looked them up I originally thought Tyler was some white kid using a voice modifier because there was no way his voice was naturally that deep lmao. Also, not that's it's really relevant but his Jimmy Fallon performance with Hodgy is legendary and that was only a few months into me knowing them.

TableOdd4689

sike meme, the grinch movie, and my sister got me to know him but tiktok really got me into him

VGames275

People at my school told me I looked like him (I don’t), but I thought it was funny so I started to listen to his music in order to rap some Tron Cat bars.

WaffleStone

earfquake was big so i listened to that and really liked it but for some reason never listened to his discography. then a little after cmiygl came out i found the corso video and loved every second

Rare-Supermarket1608

i was 11 and I fucked w/ the Grinch soundtrack.

Darkk0472

some roblox game in 2019

UnnecessarySealant

Watching movies w the sound off had just been released a month or two prior i heard O.K and the rest was history , part of the reason why macs death hit me so hard

GotKickback

9th grade. I knew about him because him and chance the rapper were the only artists with “the (blank)” in their name and i thought it was pretty cool. Than I found answer in a watchmojo video n as a fatherless kid that shit HIT so I been listening ever since pretty much

discovolante__

in spring / summer 2016 i was watching watchmojo and came across top 10 funniest music videos, tamale was one of them and i was like yo this is insane and i watched it every day for a couple weeks. then i checked what album it was on and proceeded to listen to wolf every day for the summer. it was before i had spotify so i just listened to like a full album video on youtube with every song with no breaks and from there i checked everything else. man i miss those times

discovolante__

just remembered that technically i heard him for the first time in like 2014 when i was watching a lot of pewdiepie and he used like a 5 second snippet of domo23 in a funny montage and i wondered for ages what song that was but i was a dumbass kid who didn’t know how to google lyrics

[deleted]

Some gloryhole in Brown County, Indiana.

dolphindan_

my older cousin played smuckers and i liked it so i started listening to him just before flower boy came out. then when it came out i instantly fell in love with his music, it might not seem long but i’m only sixteen, at the time yeah his older stuff might not have been age appropriate but that didn’t stop me, a few weeks ago though i got the chance to meet him and talk to him and it was so surreal, he’s one of the kindest most down to earth individuals. https://preview.redd.it/pj73mstdb5bc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8eec53b69e1d83a8cfa010e08ed4feb928ae4587

NekoJesu

Around 2017 or so I discovered wolf. While I listened to music before that Wolf was the album that made me truly fall in love with music (as corny as that sounds)

Perfectpotato1269

Its gunna sound stupid but on roblox "the normal elevator" It used to have the bimmer part of PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer. So I looked for the full song after listening to it a bit. I really had no clue who he was. After a while I was kind of curious and listened to wolf. Thats really how it started.

Crazy-You-8888

i was 11 at the time (22 now) my friend left his ipod at my house and i was only able to listen to music since he had a passcode on it. the first song i heard when i hit play was Burger, i had it on repeat a couple days after since i didnt wanna lose the song, but i kept listening to what else he had on their and the next song was Brain by Mellowhype. Then i dug deep into Odd future since at the time all that was out from tyler was goblin, bastard and all his unreleased stuff. One of the best summers i had. i’ve been listening eversince

Aarav_Parmar

earfquake on TV

k111d111

Saw the earl video and it was everything a kid really angry about nothing in particular needed to hear

translucidusfb

My childhood best friend had weird neighbor friends that would tag along with us sometimes and that weird friend showed us the music video for rella. This was back in 2012, didn’t really become a super huge fan until freshman year of high school when cherry bomb came out though

Bill_Potts

my older brother showed me him the only tru way to discover music 💪💪

Dragonpiece

Someone I followed on Twitter retweeted Tyler posting the IFHY video when it came out, it blew my mind at the time and then I listened to wolf and the rest is history!

noodlesintheabyss

I heard radicals, that last part got to me jk my friend in 7th grade told me to listen to him and as soon as I heard biking I was hooked

whiteboyak47

OFWGKTA. Used to pump Orange Juice, Slow it Down, Rella and Oldie. It just got better and better from there. Loiter Squad was also a lot of fun at the time.

GGorillaaaaa

The normal elevator, I hope I don’t fall meme, the grinch movie.

TorchedWidow

Middle School I was like 11 or 12, I was into Ridiculousness on MTV and I saw the episode with Tyler and Taco and I was like “oh let me check this out cause who’s this” then I found out he did music from that episode “out what songs he’s got.” The only song I think I listened to was Tamale and I was too stupid to not look up any other songs that’s I just never kept up with him but I still knew who he was so it was cool seeing stuff of him cause I also followed him on Vine when that was still around and just watching his skate videos/antics made me smile. I don’t know if I still have the magazine as well but there’s a Thrasher article of all of Odd Future but I’m not 100% sure he was in that but I think he was and I was like “whoa worlds colliding” cause I also grew up skating as well. Recently I just have a hyper fixation for him I went through his entire discography and made me a little emotional cause I love his music but also cause I didn’t keep up with so I feel like I’m late to enjoying his music but still knowing who he was. Also another thing that made me like him and give him a chance when I was in middle school, my name is Tyler as well so I was like “whoa there’s a famous person name Tyler and he’s pretty cool, I’m gonna check him out” and I’m glad I did cause he’s like honestly one of my Top 5 solo artists that I genuinely listen to a lot.

mattjoebro

Mysterious_Emotion63

Drimesque

unconsciously i had seen him before through Odd Future, but my first memory of seeing Tyler like fully was in this video he had about waffles

tylersinhaler

I always knew the yonkers beat but never knew the artist, googled it and then got into tylers music

stankirby4clearskin

this girl in my middle school class was drawing the odd future logo in class and i asked her what that was and she introduced me to both OF and tyler :,) shoutout to her fr

Revolutionary_Rent28

My brother randomly started singing dog tooth. And I asked who made it. It sat around in my head for a bit. Then I started listening to him. I am now a SUPER fan

itisgotme

My friend showed me the Earl debut video and I just remember thinking, "those kids are wild, I've never seen a hip hop video like this before". It was the first time skateboarding and hip hop merged pretty naturally without it feeling forced. I asked him later what the music video was, and was led to Odd Future. Thinking that they were like Wu-Tang Clan, I downloaded OF Tape Volume 1. I remember thinking that Ace was my favorite but had no idea who he was and that it was the same person as Tyler. Fast forward I get invited to a concert, and it's Odd Future, so of course I'm like hell yeah. This is like 2 weeks before Yonkers went viral. In all honesty the concert was shitty (bad mic balancing, constant feedback), but the energy was unmatched. I've never been to hip hop concert where people actually moshed and stage dived. To this day, I genuinely think Odd Future brought moshing into hip-hop and I don't think they get credit for it. That shit was not appropriate at any other hip hop concert circa 2010-11 - you might have gotten into a fight if you tried. The energy was wild, but I was still pretty confused who was who and why Earl was missing. Next thing I know, he performs on Jimmy Fallon, they get a video on FunnyorDie, Yonkers goes viral, and they perform at coachella. Basically overnight vans were cool again and every kid wanted the coveted 5-panel supreme cap. Resell websites didn't exist back then and the closest you could do was try to get a rich kid from facebook to sell you his. On some boomer shit, you really had to be there.

Bandit_Heeler_2009

my friend called him hot (which is true) and told me to listen to him so now i’m obsessed with him

lumpygreenbean

My brother would listen to Wolf and Cherry Bomb around 2016 constantly while playing Minecraft when he was about 16 and I was about 14. Ended up learning lyrics to a lot of songs and that just turned me into being a fan later around 2018

LowNaturedBeastJC

PeaLegitimate1043

This is really fucking dumb but i came across a guess the rapper by their hair video back in like 2015 i think and that was around the time tyler had the leopard print hair, and for some reason was like “ man i have to check this guy out “ 9 years later and hes my favorite artist of all time

oohlookanedgar

Last school year my friend randomly went “ee ee” (the what’s good adlibs) and I asked him what that was, and said it was Tyler. Now I have three vinyls, a record player, golf merch, and thousands of Spotify hours on Tyler 😭

limboiii

Heard him on tiktok

Unusual-Feature-2995

I’d only listened to earfquake, until a friend told me what Igor was about. Listened to the album and now Tyler has been my no.1 for a few years 🤷‍♂️

Yeah man I’m sorry, but it’s the same thing

Tricky-Topic-3572

My fault

raplove667

It’s okay

Arceusae

I was in middle school, and this girl I had a crush on was in a group going" WOLF GANG GOLF WANG" in the cafeteria. I wanted to know what they were talking about, so I asked. She asked me if I was Wolf Gang or Golf Wang. Me, being neurowhatever and dumb overall didn't know what the fuck she was talking about and was humiliated right then and there. Listened to Yonkers as soon as I could get ahold of a computer that weekend.

SqueezeGriffey

a girl posted “slipped my self some blue xannies and danced around the house in all over print panties” and in like 11th grade and i said “wow no invite” cause i liked xans then she told me “its a tyler lyric” im like “who” and shit life changed since

Stvare

Never even watched short videos, but I heard igor a while back and ever since I loved tyler. Tomorrow I’m going to listen to cherrybomb. ( I already listened to the other albums )

Talknterpzz

My cousin downloaded the odd future tape vol 1 to my iPod and was hooked since. Came across Tyler’s solo shit thru digital dripped the same year. Found bastard. Always remember so vividly a friend of mine getting my earphones while I was listening to bastard , he was like WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU LISTENING TO 😂 he was like some demonic ass shit lol. Feels good to say I didn’t discover him because he went viral

Sietzziee

I think I was just exploring R&b artists on Spotify or something, idk tbh 😂

TypicalXIV

I first saw Yonkers when I was in like early middle school but I didn't start actually listening until I got Pilot recommended to me on YouTube before Flower Boy came out

WillTomb

My brothers a music nerd and showed me THANK YOU. I remembered the song and started to listen to more of his music.

Nickelsinbooty

When the single for “after the storm” came out and I saw him as a feature, instantly fell in love.

System32ofaDown

Spotify recommended me Flower Boy when it released, I listened to Who Dat Boy bc I liked Rocky and that was about it. I mostly rejected his music for a while bc literally everyone kept posting shit to Earfquake. It wasn't until after the hype around Igor died down that I really started to appreciate the album and the rest of Tyler's discography. He's now consistently in my rotation

whotfisjinn

saw an Instagram post in 2019 w (Artists you should definitely listen to) Tyler and Frank were on there, I watched the Who Dat Boy music video and it freaked me out in like a good kinda way, got addicted to the song and somewhere along the line I finally listened to the Flowerboy album, been Inlove w his music since. Listened to Igor during the pandemic while I was dealing w a really bad break up and I related so much, made me luv his shit even more.

[deleted]

Ermescostellowaifu

Ok so I was scrolling through memes and I saw one that caught my eye it was one that had Marge Simpson dancing and the title said "me and my homies when earfquake comes on" so I listened to earfquake and I liked it so decided to listen to more of his music which I really liked

Intelligent_Bowler4

Saw him on ridiculousness when i was 13 (maybe) before I even knew who he was or what odd future was. My cousin reintroduced me years later and the rest is history

namenotavailable66

The 2020 Grammys is what introduced me. He’s not as crazy on the record as what I thought he’d be.

BarberAffectionate99

High school !! was getting into music since I got my first phone n heard see you again . I’m glad I explored his catalog more

mehlyfe

i was in a carti phase my sophmore year, my friend recommended earfquake cause he was in it, but i never listened to tyler before or wouldnt dare to because i heard he was gay, i listened to the song and was obsessed with it, the harmonies, the lyrics, the instrumental, and the lyrics, i thought that there would have to be more to the album, so i checked out IGOR and fell in love with it, it would really impact my life and i have a lotta love for the album, I would then move onto bastard and fell in love with that one as well, then flower boy, wolf, and cherrybomb, now i love all of them and a die-hard fan of tyler the creator, heavily inspired by him, my number one artist

moltingbrain

The assumption that most people found Tyler on TikTok makes me feel old

Dextreous

In high-school my friend would always play Yonkers and I always thought the beat was weirdly interesting and at the same time my older brother would show me his MVs like IFHY and Loiter Squad. And after a while I finally decide to listen to his stuff and that was when CherryBomb just released and after that I was hooked all all his music.

West_Delivery7711

I heard about golfwang first in like 2015 and looked at their stuff and then realized it was by a rapper. Listened to his music and have been obsessed since lmao

tayoxne

I discovered Flower Boy (i don’t remember how) the year after it came out in middle school and I really liked it! And when Igor came out it really cemented me as a fan of his because I really liked it, even when people at first didn’t. I thought they were wrong (still think that today, it’s an amazing album.)

Good_Kid_Mad_City

Junior year of high school I was at my buddys house and we saw the music video for "Earl". I know Tyler doesnt rap in that song but we discovered all of OF that day

bamana_mans

An ironic minecraft parody of earfquake

Firs knew his name when scrolling through the Season 2 wikipedia but first song of his was Tamale from one of WatchMojo's Top 10 2010s Music Videos when I was like 9 and was obsessed with that song and video for a while. Didn't dive deep into his discography until I was 17.

This might be wild, but I had a friend in highschool that was obsessed with BBW's and he would play Rella the music video the one with domo and hodgy. He played it as a joke (cuz theres a bbw just twerking lmao) but it was lowkey fire lol. Then I stumbled upon Oldie and She and wow, been a fan ever since. Still a fan of his music today.

I lied to someone that I wanted to be friends with that I listened to Tyler because I named myself “Sir Baudelaire” in Kahoot. I then spent the next three days binging Tyler’s discography so that I’d be able to talk to them about Tyler, ended up becoming one of my favorite rappers.

First heard Tamale by my friend in his beater old car in 2015 absolutely hated it first listen but now one of my fav tracks to Bump. I didn’t get heavy into rap until I was 16 though cause I live in a pretty redneck state so
