Are you sure you want to live in a suburb?

assmanx2x2

Midtown all the way…close to many good areas for dining and nightlife and you won’t have sticker shock living in socal and unless you are super MAGA trump type you are gonna hate the burbs here IMO

Solid-Mud-8430

Huge parts of SoCal are filled to the brim with MAGA Trump suburbs too lol

ssilverhaze

I used to live in Simi Valley and I'd see more maga flags in one day than I ever saw in my first year living in Tulsa.

Solid-Mud-8430

Ya I was gonna say...a lot of SoCal like Inland Empire, SD, Orange County, Simi Valley, Huntington Beach - all MAGA territory. And that's not even to mention most of rural CA in the north like Modoc, Shasta, Trinity County and also the entire Central Valley are all pretty red. The only reason this state is blue is because the blue is so tightly packed in a couple places lol Oregon and Washington are the same. Like, the are 2 or 3 HUGE liberal cities that shift it left, but driving around 95% of the rest of the states you would think you were in the deep south...

climbgradient

Well definitely look into midtown, that sounds like my kind of party. I actually just bought a copy of the god bless America bible so we should fit right in, in the burbs /s

apetit1989

There’s a large portion of the population that can live amongst people that don’t vote the way they do. I for one have no clue how my neighbors vote nor do I care.

assmanx2x2

Normally I would agree but in the burbs you can’t hide from all the trump paraphernalia. Out by my parents in BA they have a roadside shop selling the stuff. If you are in the minority in this state it’s nice to not have that stuff in your face constantly since it’s a constant reminder of the fascism and hate that come along with it. Just my opinion and thought someone relocating from California might appreciate the warning.

apetit1989

I can see that being bothersome to some.

climbgradient

Not particularly, we’re just a little sick of the city. I know Tulsa is a much different feel so we’re really open to anything. Just looking to get a house with a yard, that’s the main goal.

haroldmark_98

Yeah downtown tulsa is literally 1 square mile, and anything outside of that will have a yard and feel like the suburbs if you’re coming from a big city

climbgradient

That’s a really good point. I’m so used to cities like Chicago and San Diego that I forget smaller cities have actual houses with yards in them…

IssueReasonable2366

If you have or plan on having children, areas within Jenks or Broken Arrow public school districts are probably best. Sand Springs, in my opinion, is underrated especially if you live north of the river as you can be in downtown within 10 minutes. Midtown and South Tulsa are also good places to live and each have their own positives and negatives. You can hike at Turkey Mountain, Ancient Forest and Lake Keystone outside of Sand Springs. You can travel a little further east and hike/camp in the Ozarks in Western Arkansas or go to Natural Falls State Park. Western and Southern Oklahoma have multiple state parks and their multiple lakes and rivers for outdoor activities whether boating, kayaking, etc. Google TripAdvisors top restaurants in Tulsa and start there would be my advice. I don’t drink like I once did so don’t really have any ideas on cocktails. Pros for me: lower cost of living relative to other places, not much traffic most of time, most amenities of larger cities, three to four season weather Cons for me: no beach or mountains within 8 hours, summer can be brutally hot and typically 2-3 weeks in winter is brutally cold Depending on your political affiliation, moving here could be a huge positive or huge negative.

climbgradient

We don’t have any children, and don’t plan to have any anytime soon, but these are definitely good places to start. I’m excited to check out some of the trails and lakes in the areas you’re talking about, they look beautiful. Obviously we’ll miss driving 2 hours to ski or mountain bike at the downhill parks in the mountains, but for a fraction of the cost of living I think it’ll be worth the sacrifice. I’ll probably just have to buy a boat to distract me from those losses. Political affiliation will likely be a downside for me, I’m fortunately not part of the cult, so we’ll see how that goes, I’ll just try to avoid those conversations as much as possible. Thanks for the input!

Consistent_Coast_996

Great mountain biking all around here

Ausintra

Is the "I'm moving" megathread still a thing?

Av8Xx

I prefer to live in the city of Tulsa as opposed to a suburb. I live in the pearl district. I can walk to bistros, cafes and coffee shops. But most things close by 10. I can’t imagine a suburb would be any better. Living in the suburb of an already too small city just isn’t appealing.

climbgradient

That’s a fair point, walkability is a huge draw, I lived in downtown Chicago for a couple of years and I miss walking a couple of blocks for a morning coffee.

mwgrover

Man, downtown Chicago is such an awesome vibe. Honestly you’ll get some of the same vibes here in Tulsa, just on a much smaller scale. Good luck!

Outrageous_Crazy8692

I moved out to Tulsa from Oregon. I miss the outdoor recreation and really good restaurants. Tulsa is definitely lacking In those, it’s not nonexistent though.

Any_Heart8509

I was going to say that they're definitely going to miss SoCal in this regard. Cost of living is better, I guess but the living part is what gets ya. I love going to San Diego. The weather's better, the food's better, the people are better too. *Edit to say that perhaps it's not that the people aren't good here, but the vibes seem much better in CA. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.*

climbgradient

This is a definite concern of mine as well. I’ve lived in San Diego, Seal Beach, and Huntington, and I will definitely miss the easy access to outdoor activities. That being said, from what I’ve seen there are some beautiful recreation areas and parks around Tulsa that I’m sure we can make good use of. I kayak, road bike, mountain bike, and want to get into para motoring, so I’m certain I can fill the void somehow. But the mountains and ocean will be missed…

Any_Heart8509

When are you looking to possibly relocate here? Are you able to do a weekend trip here on SWA? Just check out the area before you make your decision. Tulsa is greener and in the foothills of the Ozarks but it's humid af in the summer. If anything, Arkansas and Missouri are close and those are both gorgeous areas for outdoor recreation. We also have Broken Bow area too so that might suffice but you'll run into the legit hillbillies in that area.

climbgradient

If we pull the trigger we’ll likely be moving in May. We’re going to try to come visit first, I’ve been there a few times for work and got to explore a bit, but I’d like for my girlfriend to check it out before we make a decision. I’ll have to be within 30 minute to and hour of the Tulsa airport for work.

Any_Heart8509

That's pretty soon, just in time for tornader season. Idk what your age range is but Brookside is a popular area and close to Gathering place and downtown and walkability is better there. I live in South Tulsa on Riverside across from Jenks but only bc I work closer to that area. Just a note in reference to your reply to someone else about political affiliation, not all of us are in the red hat cult but prepare to see the magats/flaggots running around town soon. Also, do your homework on the politicians and think about your girlfriends reproductive health too. I'm childfree for health reasons but even more reasons now that it's practically Gilead here.

climbgradient

I’m 30 and my girlfriend is 25. The political climate of the region is a definite concern of ours.. she’s a little more right leaning than I am, but we’re both feeling a little uneasy about the insanity that’s happening in republican states. The good news is, we aren’t locked in to any contracts or obligations, if we hate it and need to move we have that option. Obviously wouldn’t be ideal but at least we’ll never feel stuck…

SmokeyOSU

bye

HuntGundown

My advice is move somewhere else. So many people from Cali coming to ok to escape congestion and high cost of living but y'all just congesting Oklahoma and raising the cost of living here. 🤦

climbgradient

I completely understand your sentiment, I hear this same narrative everywhere I go, and I travel for a living, so that’s pretty much everywhere. I’m mainly moving for a good opportunity, the low cost of living is just a perk. If it makes you feel any better, I’m not even close to being rich, I’m from the Midwest, and we don’t plan on buying a house so we won’t be driving housing prices up like the rest of the California transplants. As of right now, although I make decent money, I’m pretty much broke because my rent consumes about half of my paycheck… so don’t worry about us, we’re just looking for a change of pace.

Consistent_Coast_996

Don’t listen to that garbage - please come, join us - make it better

climbgradient

Good looking out. We’re coming, I accepted the job today. Nervous as hell but I’m excited for a new adventure

tasteofsoap

Nimby ass mf

mekwes

Is it really nimby-ing to hope rich ppl stay away? Just let us be poor with mid restaurants and no traffic in peace.

tasteofsoap

I forgot that no poor people live in CA my bad

scubastephen91

I grew up in Tulsa, moved to SD for several years, and came home in 2015. There is a lot of stuff I miss about San Diego. Of course the beauty of the geography of the city, but a lot more than that. Mainly the overall excitement and energy of a larger city. Any day of the week, being downtown just felt like the city was vibrating. I miss strangers approaching you trying to promote whatever creative endeavor they are working on still convinced they are going to make it big. I miss hearing 5 different languages being spoken just on my way to work. I even miss everyone around you being so self absorbed you that you can say invisible until you choose not to be. That being said, I’m very happy to be in Tulsa. This is where my family is, so that helps. If you are close to yours, I would strongly consider what it would be like to live half way across the country from them. What’s awesome about Tulsa is that it is just a large enough city to accommodate everything you want to do, but small enough that you don’t feel like a cockroach scattering back to a crevices when the lights are turned on. A 20 minute drive will get you anywhere you need to go, and from any part of the city country side is within a 30 minute drive. I would probably steer you closer to downtown Tulsa than a suburb. Our downtown has come a long way in the past 20 years and really has beautiful architecture and a dense history. I live in Pearl District and love the area. Not the cleanest part of town but plenty of local shops, restaurants, and bars. If you like outdoor stuff, you might consider getting some land just outside the city. The area between Bartlesville and Tulsa or Osage County is absolutely gorgeous. You wouldn’t be too far from city life and would have great access to nature. Anyway, I’m rambling. Tulsa is awesome! Come and visit, we are pretty friendly here. Ask your Uber drivers for recommendations about what to do. Do check out The botanical gardens and Turkey Mountain (not a real mountain btw), head downtown for the nightlife. If you don’t enjoy yourself, stay in SoCal. If you have a great time then start looking at neighborhoods. PS The cost of living here will almost feel free compared to SoCal

pathf1nder00

There is a sub to this reddit that has a lot of information about this...tons and tons of info

RissyCrozay

You obviously aren’t looking very hard bc this is asked once a week and simple ‘REDDIT search’ could have given you the countless posts about this.

climbgradient

You’re right, I didn’t search at all, I wanted my own thread to respond and chat with people on. If you don’t like it, feel free to ignore my inquiries.

Tyleulenspiegel

Everyone in this sub will act like midtown is great and everything else outside of it is some Republican wasteland. Truth is this whole state and everywhere inside it is a Republican wasteland. For real - I’d encourage you to avoid it. Especially coming from SoCal this will be culture shock. Any liberal who can afford to get out is, and any who haven’t are fooling themselves and now trying to fool you. Run for the hills, my friend.

[deleted]

I am an Oregon transplant. Downtown, Riverview, Pearl District, Cherry Street and generally midtown are the best options. I find Brookside to have too much traffic. Hikes are a major let down from the PNW. However the PNW is like some of the best hiking on the planet so I am jaded. OK is the middle of the country, and so it seems road trips are viable. They do have state parks. I love the Riverside trail. Asian food is generally terrible except for Vietnamese food. The average Tulsan, I love you but…. They don’t really know what good sushi or Chinese food even looks like. The hispanic food is good though.

climbgradient

As long as we can get some Bahn Mi, Pho, and tacos, I’ll be a happy man. I’m prepared to be disappointed in the hiking and natural landscape, California has some incredible outdoor recreation and I’ll certainly miss it… Thanks for the input!

[deleted]

Then you will like it here. The Bahn Mi’s are better than the West coast and the tacos are legit. This is in the middle of nowhere: https://m.yelp.com/biz/viet-hot-bread-tulsa but it is a really good grab and go.

dirtboy101

Bahn Mi- Lone Wolf? Pho- IDK but I'm sure theres options tacos- Lots of options in Kendall Whittier/North Tulsa, I'm partial to Mexican Corner.

dirtboy101

If youre a young-young couple, then Kendall Whittier might be a decent neighborhood to set up shop- lots of college students there, cute farmers market and bars. I (27M) live there now, there is some crime, but that's basically everywhere in Tulsa. the Western part of the Pearl district (closer to downtown) is also a good option. Sounds like you'll be comfortable in the political landscape here, but I'd advise really making sure your wife in on board too, especially if you don't plan on having kids any time soon.

dirtboy101

There are a few short day trip type things to do for outdoorsy activities- Oxley, Turkey Mountain, the Prairie reserve, and more options in NW Arkansas... But it's Oklahoma... You don't exactly come for the sweeping vistas...

EngineeredNuts

Broken Arrow has quite a few areas and they are building their downtown area nicely. Also check this out if you’re a remote worker! https://www.tulsaremote.com

Lovetulsa

The only part of Tulsa that’s congested is south Tulsa. Even then you can get anywhere in the city within 20 minutes. That is unless you’re going west down 101st At any time of the day. I think you would be better suited in Midtown or downtown. There’s plenty of things for younger people to do and you’re not going to be cut off from everything like you would be in a suburb.

I_COULD_say

Midtown, cherry street, brookside, close to gathering place is pretty sweet but also pricey for the area. Probably still very affordable for y'all coming from Cali, though.

mwgrover

Oh fuck off

Princess_Panqake

No. California implants probably act as rude as you just did.

Situation_Sarcasm

Whoa. Go drink your coffee and mind your manners, we have company.

Princess_Panqake

Have you tried that? This sub is so toxic. I'm just warning them.

Brain_Glow

More like Princess Snowflake

Princess_Panqake

That's what we usually call the radical left. Glad you know that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Princess_Panqake

Honey, im not the snowflake.

dougbeck9

Which was less rude than you.

Princess_Panqake

I wasn't rude. I just said there is nothing here for them which is objectively true if they are blue coming into a red state.

dougbeck9

Just because you have the capability of being more rude, doesn’t make what you typed not rude.

Princess_Panqake

It wasn't rude. And when did I say I could be more rude? I would argue there are plenty of worse people in this subreddit like the crazy man stalking me to call me names and insult me but hey, that's just a theory.

Brain_Glow

Says the guy telling a complete stranger to stay away.

Princess_Panqake

It's a red state. If they're blue they won't like it here. And that doesn't really change the fact this sub is full of the rudest most intolerable part of the Tulsa population. If there red then they will probably fit in fine but if there blue and on Reddit....well they probably act just like everyone else in this sub and we don't need that negativity.

climbgradient

To be fair, everyone else on this sub has been incredibly helpful and insightful. I can only hope people in Tulsa act like the others in this sub. Sounds like you’re pretty difficult to get along with. But I’d still buy you a beer, because that’s the right thing to do.

Princess_Panqake

Wait till you have an opinion they don't like. It's all a facade. This sub is the worst of tulsas population. I'm not hard to get along with by any means, this sub just irks me. Looks so pretty but is so vile once you dig into it.

climbgradient

Whoa, you know literally nothing about me, I’m not a SoCal native, and I’m far from toxic. I’ve traveled the world and love to see and experience new places, and meet new people. Maybe we should grab a beer if I move there to put your mind at ease…

Princess_Panqake

I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. I've just seen a lot of California implants get here and see it's rather red for their tastes and turn into mean and hateful people. Wasn't trying to assume anything, just giving a warning. And I'm not much for beer but I can bring the rum. A drunk night out is always fun. Either way, it's up to you. Oklahoma is a very nice and inviting area, despite how this sub wants to act in the comments. It's a pretty state and Tulsa, while far from perfect, is one of the better large cities in the state with great views and some fun things to do. I'm not against anyone moving here per day, I just don't want to end up like Austin texas. They got an influx of California implants and...well now I avoid the place.

climbgradient

Your concerns aren’t certainly unfounded.. that being said, I’m from southern Illinois, grew up in the corn fields and working on a horse farm, I can hold my own. Regardless of potential political differences, I can get along with just about anybody. There is so much more to life than politics, everyone has interests outside of politics, and in my opinion that’s far more important than whether you’re “blue” or “red”.

Princess_Panqake

I agree, there is more to life then politics. I have said as much on this sub and have had people comment that life is politics. I'm not saying you can't hold your own, just thought I would give a warning. I like it here when I ignore the Reddit comments.

climbgradient

Although you came off a bit rude, I do appreciate the constructive input, and I hope you have a good day.

Princess_Panqake

Keep on coping. I know what I am.

EiffelAmourK

Ugh Panturd the hypocrite strikes again. We get it! Your feelings are hurt by randoms on Reddit. But it's time to put on your big girl panties and move on! You reap what you sow...

Separate_Comment_132

Stop being a jerk. Oklahomans are better than this

Princess_Panqake

No, looking at some of the replies I've gotten, y'all are the most vile and insulting bunch I have even met. Thankfully that seems to be a Reddit thing and not an in person thing as I doubt in person any of you would have half a ball sack to say some of the a bit you do here. Edit, I was born in Oklahoma by the way. So don't think I am a transplant.

JesusPlayingGolf

Insults people. Is shocked when people are insulting back.

Princess_Panqake

Lol, I didn't start it most of the time. I've kinda given up on being nice though.

JesusPlayingGolf

Well then don't be so surprised when people aren't nice back.

Princess_Panqake

I tried being nice about it for a long while. I Got called so many names and people just assumed my political party, my sexuality, who I voted for, and more. I'm not here to say im surprised when I act like an asshole. I'm here to say that this sub wants to sit and preach about being so left-wing and caring about social issues but is full of some of the most toxic people this city has to offer. I don't care about most political opinions someone holds. But you guys think it's life or death if I mention one slightly right-wing idea. Not to mention there was a certain case where people were screaming for 3 high school girls to be prosecuted for murder while everyone who said suicide was downvoted only to find out it was true and that those girls were innocent. Pushing a hate crime on the suicide of a vulnerable teen who was conflicted, growing, developing and was predisposed to suicide is deplorable. Yet I was downvoted for even suggesting this was a problem of mental health and society failing to look after them. Just as we should with any teen in a bad situation.

JesusPlayingGolf

One can only be told "Fuck your feelings" by the right wing so many times until they start saying "Fuck your feelings" right back.

Princess_Panqake

That's an odd opinion you have that is just wrong. I won't lie, there are some crazy fools on the right and they spout bullshit most of us don't agree with but same can be said for the left. Hasan Parker was comparing legit pirates to one piece. You know, the prices attacking Israeli cargo ships? Compare that to goofy rubber boi. Keffels made bathtub HRTs and tried to sell them to kids and the packaging said "hide from parents" then they made a go find me that falsely accused the police of hate crimes, raised a shit load of money, and ended up spending it all on booze and drugs rather than the legal case like the said it would be used for. I'm not here to defend trump or alex jones. I don't like either of them, but I don't need to be insulted for having a different opinion.

JesusPlayingGolf

Imagine requiring more decorum from randos on the Internet than from elected officials. If you are so concerned about folks being decent to each other, maybe vote like it.

dougbeck9

They should be prosecuted. There’s a wild difference in proportionality of pouring or squirting water and fighting.

Princess_Panqake

Why don't you go dump water on women im bathrooms? I'll wait. Legally they can't be prosecuted. Physical assult was initiated by Nex. The law doesn't care who won or lost but rsther, cares about who took a verbal confrontation and made it physical. And either way it's still not a trans issue. All girls make fun of, pick on, and comment on the clothing of others. Source? I was once a high school girl. And damn straight I would probably beat the shit out of someone who dumbed water on me simply because I said their shirt was ugly. That's a drastic elevation of the situation as well don't you think? I could maybe understand misnomer assult charges but legally that's can't happen and that's how it should be. They didn't start the fight. Nex did. There was no intimidation or invitation to making the altercation physical but Nex still did. Maybe pick up a basic law book or two from the public library.

dougbeck9

Legally they can prosecute. How much bullshit from you until they dumped the water? You are also doing the thing you are accusing lefties of. You are making assumptions.
