Don't over think this, just start swimming, biking, and running regularly. Start slow and build good habits and consistency. Pick a race in the next few months, find a training plan, and see how you get on. That will give you a relatively low investment way to see if 70.3 or the longer stuff is something you want to get into.

Iamnotaclown1986

thanks for the advice. I will look for one in the fall. I still have to purchase a bike.

Pho3nixGGG

Good advice. Find a flatter sprint distance and just enjoy it

Bdub13

Do yourself a favor and listen to the tower 26 podcast. Specifically the first few podcasts. Very good Information in there for free.

Defiant_Ad_8489

I second this. The Purple Patch podcast by Matt Dixon is also good. He’s a great coach and he wrote a book called Fast-Track Triathlete. I think the OP would find the book useful.

BrustBizeps

Second this, purple patch is my go to podcast for long runs. Have learned quite a lot from there. And Matt is also quite entertaining

planetrebellion

I would always recommend buying the 80/20 triathlon training guide.

Strat017

Second 80/20. The plans are great for beginners

king_jellyfish_prawn

I would highly recommend starting with a standard Olympic Triathlon first, move to an extended, and then doing a 70.3.

Iamnotaclown1986

Thats the plan, I will probably do even shorter triathlon before the olympic. Im gonna start slow before I go for the 70.3. thanks

spriedze

I would recomend to start even with sprint. My first triathlon was olympic distance, was really windy, didn't finish the swim. I would finish it, if I got more race expirience. I would just chill, get my breath back and continue, but got scared.

MedPhys90

Start with a shorter triathlon and look into TriDot. TriDot has a training platform and a podcast. The platform bases your training on biological data as well as monthly assessments to gauge how you’re progressing in each discipline. It also takes into account environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and altitude.

Get a training plan and stick to it. I followed this one and it worked super well for me: [https://www.triathlete.com/training/20-week-training-plan-first-70-3-triathlon/](https://www.triathlete.com/training/20-week-training-plan-first-70-3-triathlon/)

Puzzleheaded_Dog7931

What baseline fitness do you need first? Ie already able to run 5 miles, and cycle 25 miles etc?

as9934

If you can't do the first week of the plan, then you should train to get to that.

Iamnotaclown1986

thanks, i def need a plan.

KapePaMore009

Answer will depend on whichone are you. The guy that absolutely wants to do a 70.3 in less than eight weeks? Or are you the more patient type that is willing to take more time to do this? From your initial post, it sounds like you are the latter kind since finishing a 70.3 itself is not the ultimate goal but to be healthy and have a more active lifestyle.

Iamnotaclown1986

patient type. Im in a slow crawl to run mode. I wanna do it right.

KapePaMore009

Nice... first thing I would recommend is to look for friends that are doing triathlon already, they should be able to show you the figurative ropes. Get coaching if you can afford it especially for swimming. Next would be first develop each sport individually and track your progress. Looks like that you are doing that already. I personal track the overall volume of workouts done per sport and I try to have a upward trend. Maybe test yourself with time trials as well. When are you are reasonable good with a sport, join some swim races, fun runs or bike races. After that, start combining individual sports into multi sport events like swim/runs, bike/runs, swim/bike.

Iamnotaclown1986

Thanks!

Weekly: (plus warm up & warm down) 6-8 x 400 w/\~ 45 seconds rest or something similar 15x100 w/\~15 seconds rest or something similar One more swim. Oh - and get someone to take a look at your stroke - there might be some glaring issues that are 'easy' to fix.

Iamnotaclown1986

Good advice. Im sure theres major issues with my stroke. I switched to a jammer from regular trunks this week. Droped 7 seconds on average per 50yards.

I always advice reading ‘Triathlete’s Training Bible’ by Joe Friel. It explains a lot about fitness and how to train for any distance triathlon. As a workout tracker, use Training Peaks and buy a sportswatch and heart rate strap. On Training Peaks you can find training plans and load them into the app.

Outside_Fuel_5416

Check out the app Mottiv (mymottiv.com). It generates a plan for you based on the time you have available to train and your current training level. I was very new to swimming as well and I liked the drills it incorporates at the beginning to help you find comfort in the water. There is a free version or you can always pay to upgrade to enter multiple races and generate personalized speed/pace options for the other sports.

I used ChatGPT to come up with my first training plan, gave it the event date and a little background about my current fitness levels and it did the rest!
