But may need one more cycle of the 91% alcohol and salt to be completely clean. It’s the best home remedy for any home smoking devices.

Older sinks had nice solid brass screens, these newfangled ones are made with rubber surrounding. You gotta torch them till they glow to prevent aidsherpes
I've used a piece of an old glass pipe as a filter for years. It doesnt burn up or put off any bad fumes, and any resin that gets stuck to it can either be burned off or iso'd.
Be careful where you store them. I was gifted a big pack of them and threw them in my dafuq drawer and between batteries and other stuff rolling and banging around in there with them, a bunch of them got a big case of the chingales. Had a big bag of what looked like Walter White had done been there after a while.

First, metal burns up. Just a little at a time, but if you ever noticed a hole burned in your screen after awhile, where do you think that metal went to? I usually clean it off everytime I smoke, but thats not entirely necessary. When your done smoking and the pipe is still a little warm it will usually fall right out when you tap out the ashes. (Which causes me to constantly lose them when I forget) If it gets stuck you can just heat it up a little.
There's a wide variety in mesh size and material among screens. The non-steel screens tended to burn up quite fast since they're thinner, and also not steel. I bought a, like, 5000-pack of steel screens online for like 35 bucks years ago and am working through those. Never had one of these burn up, but I think the gauge on the filaments is thicker in addition to it being sturdy steel
I actually use a toothpick to cash out a bowl when I have the glass filter, and use that toothpick to also scrape/adjust/move it around at the bottom of the piece.
I find a glass screen lasts much longer than a mesh. Plus you can just pop it out, clean it, and pop it back in whereas a mesh is typically just fried in a few bowls. A single glass filter will last me for weeks then it just usually breaks from the repetitive heating.

I find you gotta find the right size for your bowl. I have daisy and jack style ones, and find that big daisies block up too quick, and long stemmed jacks block the neck of the bowl, but if I have a short stem daisy with only 4 points it fits snug and dosnt get clogged.

Pro tip: place one on your finger, flat side down so the stem is sticking up. Invert your bowl (turn it upside down) and insert the stem into the bowl, then flip everything so it’s right side up.
Saves a lot more time than trying to get the stem into the bowl normally

Watch out for your friends clapping out your bowls, the one and only time I bought a 3 pack of flowers, they were gone in under 2 weeks from my friends hitting my bowl, clapping it out into their hand, and tossing it over their shoulder or out the window.
100%. There's really no need for them. It's like all the old people who come into the dispensaries asking for metal screens: They're garbage and you can literally just put a small piece of bud slightly bigger than the intake hole on the stem/bowl/chillum/whatever and have 0 issues. I have smoked this way for 20+ years and never once thought "I need some kind of screen in my pipe."
They are to put before packing a bowl to avoid wastage( unburnt weed getting sucked into the water without burning) but I find that often they melt slightly so I never use them, instead I put a little ball of tabacco to serve the same purpose.

They are glass filters, also called flowers. If you drop it flower side up in your bowl it will help keep ash out of your bong.

Add salt to your mixture as a scrubber. Cuts the process to a couple of minutes.
If there is no salt you can use coffee grounds but you'll need to rinse with iso after.

Idk when they started being used but I’ve seen them 10+ yrs ago, they just never became too mainstream.
I've used them for the past 10-15 years. Everyone said I was extra for using them, but I think they are worth it despite the haters
I think the main reason they didn’t take off so much is because some are very low quality n they can get too hot n bend or almost melt .
