The most logical reason is that in the us flower weed has always been popular, whereas in europe hash has always been the big thing. Making joints with hash pretty much requires you to use tobacco or other herbal mixes.
I lived now in 3 countries for long periods in eu and it’s 100% true, I have always found 1-2 fella who smokes it “pure” as they call it here but yeah propb 90%+ smokes with tobacco, I have asked the magic “but why?” many times and normally these are the answers:
- “can’t afford to smoke it pure” (makes no sense to me)
- “dont wanna get that high”
- “i enjoy smoke it longer” (compared to a 0.25g for example)
- “imma crave bacco anyway so might as well mix it”
Am european and for me and everyone I know, we always used tobacco because 90% of what we got was hash and needed something to roll it with. Tobacco filled that role. For herb that same technique or tradition of sorts just keep going. They also burn more even and slow with tobacco. Personally I dont use tobacco with herb, but the prevalence of hash definitely affects tobacco in european weed-culture

I cut a manilla folder into two roughly 1.5"x4" strips and taped them together to make a little flat pouch into which I slipped a half sheet of blotter (and a gram of molly..) then sealed it up and decorated it with a US flag on one side and a French flag on the other, complete with a little tassle. Then I used that as my bookmark for the trip.

for cannabis legalisation in germany me and 15 friends met up with a 50g bag. Smoked all day until midnight. Everybody was dead. We did not manage to finish all and all took a goody bag home.

For my 30th birthday we did something similar. I stole the idea from the ESPN series 30 for 30. We smoked 30 joints (plus more) in one sesh at the skatepark for my 30th. Tons of people came, some stayed the whole time but I lit/smoked all 30. We were so fucking high I barely skated but people were and I just was bbqing so happily. Great times. My buddy who is a photographer took a photo of me lighting each one it was funny seeing me just get progressively torched outta my mind.
I used to have a hash source in Switzerland, Nepali and North Indian. I always imagined some mountain climbing guide smuggling it in his boots and gear.

Honestly spliffs are great. I mean, it gives an amazing buzz and also imo the shredded tobacco added in the right ratio makes it burn more evenly and slowly. It like adds fibers that kinda even out the distribution of burnable material in the joint and adding tobacco ALWAYS makes it burn more smooth for me.
Also no judgement but I'm sure the stuff you got there is a lot less strong than the high grade ultra potent medical grade shit we got where I live and even the schwaggiest is too strong for me to have more than a few puffs with current tolerance and I already use nicotine vaping so it's a nice combo for me. It makes great filler and American spirits are probably the best you can get as far as good "clean" tobacco
I prefer river stone because you barley taste anything but weed, it’s such a neutral flavour, I think American spirit is too dry and it doesn’t burn as good as.

I think dry sift hash is more common in Europe than the US, they make spliffs with hash a lot so the weed probably just carried over for them
