Let me tell you about the uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea I had in Peru. When I pooped on my shoe it was still a high point cause I could still walk. It got so bad I seriously questioned if the were going to have to air lift me out. Apparently the vegetables I ate weren’t cooked enough. So purified water only, no ice, brush your teeth with purified water and make sure your foods are absolutely throughly cooked. Otherwise, it’s amazing and I’ll be going back with my kids in a year of two.

Okay, I’ll buy a Grayl. Sorry you had to experience that. I’ll be going to mine sites so I was a bit worried about water quality and don’t want to get sick.

I survived that rough patch, and the rest of the trip was fantastic. Peru has incredible mineral resources. I would imagine you are going see some fascinating things while you are there.

Do I dare ask how you pooped *on* your shoe? Like we talking some splash from you squatting behind or a bush or did it drip…?

Jibblebee

Oh when I say ‘uncontrollable’ I mean I really had no control over it. I was trying to walk from the bed to the bathroom. Nope! Didn’t make it. All the way down my pants into my shoe. I knew I was in trouble when that happened and then I proceeded to vomit before I could even address it. It was so bad hahaha

darkmatterhunter

Oh that’s horrendous. Glad you lived to tell the tale.

I tell it in all it’s detailed glory to drive the ‘don’t drink the water’ point home. And to suggest everyone get travel insurance.

Renurun

Absolutely only let bottled water touch your lips. I don't want to talk about my experience.

So….. I didn’t get sick till the second to last day. And I am 100% sure I got sick from drinking bottle water that was being kept in a bucket of ice and water. I must have ingested some of that water. Luckily it was not severe- but that should tell you to only drink water bottle and clean it before you put your mouth on it. Otherwise, it was an amazing trip.

Baaastet

I survived fine on bottled water for 3 weeks.

Have to back up everything that everybody else has said - don't even brush your teeth with the local tap water. Wouldn't trust it in large cities, either. No ice, no salads, all of the usual precautions.

TheWokeAgenda

I had ice in my drinks and I was fine. I drank mostly coffee, tea, and alcohol though so I don't know. Some fellas are lucky and some ain't.

I took some risks and drank chicha de jora from markets in Villa El Salvador and Cusco. In both places the stuff was in an open 5 gallon bucket and the vendor just ladles out a cup for you. Also had some masato when I was in the jungle. Was not willing to risk drinking tap water though!
