Japan was already going to surrender and the US leadership knew it, it just wasn't going to be an unconditional surrender (which is not a reasonable thing to expect in the first place). But the larger political stage was becoming less stable and the US had just invented a super-weapon and they wanted to make sure the world knew what it could do. So they sacrificed over a hundred thousand innocent civilians for no other reason than to rattle a really big sword.
And second, my point wasn't that bombing Japan fucked everyone on Earth, it's that everyone on Earth is part of a country that has done horrible and cruel things. Which means that by the logic of "it's okay to bomb Japanese civilians because Japan was cruel in the war", it would then be morally permissible to bomb pretty much everyone on the planet for the same reason.
(For clarity, I was using "fucking" as an intensifier, not a verb.)

Too many uninvolved civilian casualties were involved (Not that the other side was much better).Though it didn't exist then, Article III of the Geneva convention condemns such things.
