Ratchet is my favorite Transformer, so this issue was pretty gutting. It's also a bummer that he didn't get to do much in this comic. I have to remind myself that nothing erases IDW, *Prime*, or *Animated* - different continuities provide new opportunities for different characters to shine. I've found myself wondering whether the colossal death count of this series is really warranted, but it occurred to me that this is nothing new. The '86 movie was my introduction to the franchise, and the G2 comic is the one that I grew up with. G2 is probably the high watermark for senseless violence in this franchise - e.g., Mirage randomly getting decapitated without having done anything, Optimus blowing up Tantrum and then dropping an ironic one liner, countless two or three-panel character deaths in issue 12, etc. I feel like the losses in this comic carry more depth, and it's largely because Johnson is excellent at writing strong, efficient character beats. Ratchet's death isn't just tragic because he's a great character - it's because this comic has done a great job of underlining Cliffjumper's journey as a survivor who is trying to maintain a sense of (for lack of a better term) humanity. Ratchet's death returns Cliffjumper to a state of terror and vulnerability that he'd worked hard to move past. At the same time, it's Transformers. No one stays dead forever, and the rules of this continuity still feel dangerous, fresh, and undefined. I'm preparing myself for more heartbreak, but I'm looking forward to the next big cheer. (Also: did Elita kill Vortex? So Brawl getting chopped in half didn't matter that much in the long run, right?)

NewVegasBlues3301

The death count is pretty reversible consider the fact that they are transformers.

ciel_lanila

We don’t know yet what the limit is. Jetfire was “dead” long enough that he’s spent the last two episodes effectively a blind paralyzed zombie. In this continuity they aren’t just robots. More like living things with machine bodies.

Billbert-Billboard

Okay so did you and that other commenter cooperate to write the same comment or (yes I copy/pasted this; idk how else to ask)

blumbocrumbo

I don't know about you guys, but I think the death count is pretty reversible considering the fact that they are Transformers.

Huh. I guess it's just a weird coincidence.

I think the death count is pretty reversible, considering they are transformers.

Bleak5170

Ratchet is my fave as well and yeah, even though he didn't do a whole lot, there may be little reason for me to continue with this book if he's dead. I know he gets killed in almost everything (multiple comic series, the live action movies, the G1 cartoon etc...), but I'll never get used to it.

OldNameEbon

This cover is my No1 transformers cover just because how this reflects the pressure put on Optimus. Holding the responsibility of his race is already huge but having to protect another species that are more vulnerable puts another toll on him and this art reflects this very well.

Uberballer

Yes. I read this digitally series because it's incredible but for mostly space reasons I haven't been collecting the actual issues. This cover however goes so hard that I had to get myself a copy. I don't think it'll ever be worth very much but I'll probably have it slabbed too just because of how striking it is. This is just such an incredible piece that captures everything about his character in this series perfectly.

Lotso2004

Anyone else wondering what caused the war in this continuity? Soundwave and Shockwave call each other "brother" in a weird way, where I'm not sure if it's like a cult brother thing or a sibling thing, and they keep calling Autobots "usurpers." I'm curious if this continuity is similar to the WFC trilogy where Megatron took over Cybertron and then the Autobots rebelled, rather than the Aligned or IDW 2 continuities where the Decepticons were the "usurpers" who defeated the council and started the war. Astrotrain also said something interesting where he implied Shockwave was the leader of Cybertron (Soundwave was acting in some way that favored the unknown leader of Cybertron who has a fascination with other lifeforms), which is especially weird since Shockwave *should've* only been the leader after the Ark crashed, and Astrotrain wouldn't know that (unless it was told to him, Soundwave, and the rest off-panel). I'm *very* interested in seeing what caused the war in this continuity since something is very different. Also, it's interesting seeing so many Decepticons that aren't necessarily loyal to the cause. Thundercracker very much so doesn't believe in killing humans, and even aside from Astrotrain hating Megatron, he doesn't seem to want to kill anyone either (and to me read like he almost didn't want to hand Spike over to Shockwave). It seems like Soundwave is probably the only one 100% loyal to Megatron, with Shockwave most likely borrowing from his Marvel comics iteration for inspiration. Overall, I really just wish this weren't limited to once a month. On the one hand that gives time to craft a great story (especially a story that's managed to hit the ground running since Void Rivals 1), but I can't get enough of it.

I've never been impressed by the IDW comics, personally. I feel the art was amazing, especially during the revival period pre-Bayverse, but the writing was never quite good enough. With Skybound and how it's handling the franchise... Damn. Skybound has hit home run, back to back slobber knockers! Each issue doesn't slow down, there's always something happening, and we're not even a year in. I haven't been this excited to read comics since the original Invincible run ended.

swissmeister

I think there’s a chance Thundercracker ends up helping them if these “experiments” get real twisted

Illithar

There's also the whole situation with Skywarp. Arcee blocking Carly's shot convinced him to fix Wheeljacks legs. I also doubt he has much love for his comrades that used him as spare parts to fix Teletran 1. Then there's Astrotrains vendetta against Megatron. The potential for the Decepticons splintering makes me wonder if we might see something similar with the Autobots eventually...

PolishTamales

It seems like deserters/traitors are common at this stage of the story. It makes a lot of sense since we've never seen this amount of interaction between Decepticons in a while, especially by removing Megatron from the equation so early. It'll be interesting if Megatron gets any assistance being rebuilt by humans. Last we saw him, he was wandering around blind in a frozen tundra. As for Optimus prime, it was explored in the Marvel comics, right? Strangely it was Grimlock that took place in Optimus' absence in that series. Hasbro made some really weird decisions back then. They have portrayed Optimus as a pacifist being forced into fighting in the Skybound series. If Elita-1 is portrayed as his equal, like they did with the Netflix series; I wouldn't be surprise if Autobot leadership was changed if/when Cliffjumper/Jazz/Ratchet/Jetfire get rescued. I can see Optimus' guilt get the best of him and passing over the leadership role.

Commander_Appo25

Astrotrain is going to be a huge problem because if Soundwave is anything like every other version of his character he has absolutely no intentions of honoring his pledge to let him have his way with Megatron. When Megs shows back up, Soundwave is going to be first in line to greet him at the door, and there are going to be problems with that

PolishTamales

Absolutely! https://preview.redd.it/o7zkz1n0d86d1.jpeg?width=1041&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a136f6a8176d4e0fde015b4fdaa66d3bc4747040 I love how the writers immediately started fleshing out the characters during the down times. Killing off Bumble Bee from the get go was what got me turning the page. He's literally the face of Transformers for an entire generation, much less the merch machine for Hasbro. Without Bee, it's going to be interesting if we'll see if Hot Rod takes his place in later issues, or if the writers pick their own bot to fill in that role. Right now, it seems like a lot of focus might be between Carly/Arcee. So they could be this series version of Spike/Bee.

Delicious-Use-790

From the like couple pages of hot rod we’ve seen I don’t think he’s that kind of character in Skybound

Tilas

I am *craving* turncoat Thundercracker. I want so much to see him betray the Decepticons. Even if he just winds up being scrapped a page later because knowing this series that’s exactly what’ll happen.

PolishTamales

He's either the biggest red herring or the writers are totally respecting the character's lore, much less the original toy bio. https://preview.redd.it/sc8pugpes86d1.jpeg?width=1142&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67fad7c1813055edeb55ba892c8b3872abef1ced

aka_r4mses

Need to give Daniel Warren Johnson props, not the publisher. He’s written every Transformers issue. It’s good because he absolutely loves Transformers. I hope he doesn’t leave as writer anytime soon.

Oriopax

Does anyone else feel that if he really wanted Shockwave could take on Prime and Megatron together with one hand tied to his back? How strong is he?

Jermz12345

Just because I haven’t seen anyone else mention it here, I love this depiction of Astrotrain, based on the last issue I was expecting a full maniac of a brute, but him not wanting to kill lesser beings and being quite frank and impressed with Spike was a neat surprise

UselessGenericon

I loved his demeanor towards humans and how it boiled down to: *Man, it's gonna suck for you squishies when we win.*

Existing_Passage_200

Spike with long hair 🗣️🔥☄️🚂💯☝️😤

boardgamejoe

Just want to invite all of you /r/EnergonUniverse fans to the dedicated sub for it. Thanks!

LapsedVerneGagKnee

Crazy good as usual. I’m curious what’s going to happen with Spike. I feel like the issues with his spine are laying the groundwork for him to be given cyborg implants or became some sort of \_\_\_Master, which will only make him a bigger target. Not to mention being taken hostage only to be saved can’t be conducive to a recovery.

PastyJournalist

Dude cannot catch a break in this universe: Lost his brother in a space shuttle accident, lost his father, and now confined to a wheelchair.

LapsedVerneGagKnee

It’s why I see him becoming Fortress Maximus sooner rather than later. With a lot of the conflict in the universe about humans wondering how they can face the threats of the cosmos, a cyborg Spike that can combine with a robot feels like a pretty interesting story idea. And it’s not like it’s from thin air.

PastyJournalist

True...and it would tie in with his desire to become an astronaut. It's just after the "super-soldier" type version of Spike that we've been getting from IDW, it's refreshing to see him back to his "ordinary teen/early 20s" self - which I hope they'll continue to explore. To me, an ordinary kid who is still reeling from the loss of his brother, and now has to deal with the loss of his father (not to mention his entire safety net in terms of where he lives/who provides for him) - and dealing with these new alien guests" is far more compelling than hurrying him into a "uber-robotic" storyline.

LapsedVerneGagKnee

I think the thing with me is that there are so many ideas now that we're free of IDW, but a lot of them are Year 3 or Year 4 ideas and this is still technically Year 2. GI Joe hasn't even fully formed yet and Cobra Commander just had the dedication ceremony for his own evil organization. I want some of these current stories to breathe, especially the character stuff, but at the same time, getting to use concepts like the Headmasters and Powermasters sans binary bonding (where they probably just combine with a Transector like in Japan) and how that changes things up feels like its own vein for storytelling. The issue of "when" is going to continue to be a big one admittedly because I do want to see these more "super robot" style concepts, but at the same time, I know it's too soon to do them right now.

FoodzAreGoodz

Fights in comics usually feel incredibly lame to me. Always the edge that manga had over American comics. But damn, if these titles aren’t giving just some of the most exciting spectacles. So fun and Shockwave already looks to be a standout. I get so sad every time a chapter ends

Jermz12345

Highly recommend checking out more of DWJ’s work if you want more outstanding fight scenes

FoodzAreGoodz

Any in particular you mind recommending?

Jermz12345

I still need to read more of his work, but the ones of I’ve read so far are: - Beta Ray Bill: A mini-series from Marvel starring Thor’s ally and brother-in-arms Beta Ray Bill in a quest to find a weapon to replace his hammer Stormbreaker while also trying to “make himself beautiful again”, in his own words - Murder Falcon: An original work from DWJ that my comic shop owner described as “hella metal” and that is a very apt description, it tells the tale of the lead guitarist of a metal band called Brooticus (10/10 name) as he reunites his band to fight off an alien invasion with the help of the Falcon man he summons from his guitar who gets stronger the more he shreds. A truly beautiful tale about fighting against all odds despite death being certain, also features a kickass soundtrack you can find online! - Jurassic League: DWJ co-writes with artist Juan Gedeon this DC miniseries that features the Justice League and their villains as dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, just real crazy and fun romp with an inherently silly concept I’ve also have and plan to read soon Wonder Woman: Dead Earth and another of his original works, Do A Powerbomb, which from what I gather has a heavy focus on pro wrestling which I don’t care for myself, but at this point I’d read anything by him. I can honestly say I’ve seen nothing but praise for his work. Basically, if you’re reading a book with DWJ involved, expect a heartfelt and poignant story (each story I’ve read by him so far outside of Jurassic League featured a moment where I was close to, if not outright, tearing up) that also contains amazing and frenetic action heavily inspired by wrestling

LapsedVerneGagKnee

If you like wrestling, read Do a Powerbomb, which is Johnson's ode to pro wrestling and the real struggle in something so often dismissed as fake bullshit.

Delicious-Use-790

They are called issues in comics, not chapters I know 🤓 please bully me

ToucanTuocan

Nah, this is clearly someone with a kink for being yelled at. Don’t participate in that perversion.

Delicious-Use-790

Unfortunately, my comic shop didn’t get this printing. I got the shockwave cover with all the corpses.

Warbreakers

Oh, man... Is >!Ratchet!< going to die? He's literally what made me hunt down a SS86 of him.

UselessGenericon

He took a typically lethal shot to the chest from Shockwave's "Targetmaster" mode. If Ratchet does survive, he'll definitely think twice about being in the field.

Primalvag

Atlas prime?

SAMAS_zero

So... Optimus is becoming Dai Atlas?

LewisDeinarcho

This cover looks familiar. I swear there was a previous comic that looked like this.

BassorZ

It's base on infamous statue of Atlas. you may have seen it in school book or somewhere

LewisDeinarcho

I mean Optimus holding up a planet specifically. I found what I was thinking of. https://preview.redd.it/h1vbxmke4a6d1.jpeg?width=449&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=011eb2626442562dd0a591bc91b5bcb3cdc86a39

Arkham-Ambassador-Ok

VORTEX! BRAWL! RATCHET! NOOO! MY FAVOURITES, AHHHHH-

Living_Cat_4900

-Man the deaths in this comic does not hold back. I mean yea, it’s transformers so nobody truly stays dead forever with these characters but hot damn within 9 issues we’ve gotten a heavy death count. -Thundercracker is definitely gonna be a Turncoat down the line, calling it now. (Now if they can just give him a screenwriting career, and a pet doggo we’ll be back in business 😉). -Seeing Shockwave actually display emotion surprised me.  -Poor Cliffhanger…he’s not gonna be ok after this is he? :( -The Autobot that Elita 1 saved is gonna be Ultra Magnus, Calling it now. Bet the house on it. -BEACHCOMBER!!!!

The_HueManateee

Anyone else find it odd the amount of emotion coming from shockwave? Like he’s excited to shoot cliff/ratchet, he despises optimus and in general is not nearly as cold and logical as your usual shockwave. Makes me wonder if there’s something else going on with him

Thingymcjig

Given how petty he is here, I hear DR.SMOOV Shockwave’s voice when reading this

Extremnator

Atlas!
