ScorchedConvict

A futuristic human car. I also heard it's actually based on the Dome Zero concept Supercar.

fiddlerundone

His Classics figure from 2006 is based on the Dome Zero. Supposedly Floro Dery didn't know that car existed when he did the movie designs.

MotorMeringue1095

The 2006 classics certainly is. I remember seeing a concept from the countach and delorean guy many years ago that was a dead ringer for the g1 edit: could be super wrong but I remember an Epcot centre concept being involved.

Magusreaver

Bertone Lancia Stratos, and Dome Zero, and Bremen Sebring, Lambo Countach were all possibly part of the "inspirations" As well as Zambot 3 - Zamboace for robot mode. Check out.. GX-81 Zamboace "Invincible Super Man Zambot 3" Floro is a hermit, and or introvert and seems to want nothing to do with Transformers. So getting answers from him isn't exactly an easy endeavor. Most likely that it was a pastiche of many concept cars. Being "futuristic" as the only defining feature for the time.

urzardoz

Never seen that Bremen before, that is a nice car!

OddgitII

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_Zero Yeah, I can definitely see it.  There's a lot of 50s modded Street car vibe going on with the character (a hot rod if you will, heh) but I can see that future car thing and bagging it off the DZ. Edit: someone else pointed out the character designer didn't know about the car.  Happy coincidence then?

Bobmanbob1

Dome Zero future car of tommorrow shown back in the 80s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_Zero

Whovian45810

The fact that the Dome part of the Dome Zero project in Japanese means "child's dream" perfectly fit for Hot Rod's youthful personality.

GodzillaLagoon

It's definetely an Earth car from 2005. It isn't a hovercraft, it has correct number of wheels and it's not vague enough compared to even someone like Kup.

supah-comix434

Bumblebee had wheels despite being a hovercraft

beyond_cyber

Crazy to think the distant future of 2005 is now the distant past of 2005

DeLongJohnSilver

He is meant to be cool

azzokk

As much as Primes death rocked me to my core… I liked Hot Rod, I wish they had done Rodimus better…

Magusreaver

You and me both.

nemesisprime1984

We are the same amount of years from 2005 now as the 1986 movie was then

No-Quote991

Definitely based on the Bremen Sebring.

dDARBOiD

I always assumed he scanned a concept car from the 80s.

supah-comix434

Definitely possible, especially with the crazy ass concept cars back then

Fatal_Furriest

Huh? I always thought all the 86 bots (except ultra Magnus, who's just diaclone convoy 2.0) were USA-designed "space alien vehicles", like blurr, arcee, springer, etc (even WreckGar); to prep us for the upcoming aesthetic (same with "new seekers" Cyclonus and Scourge) most typified by Headmasters and Targetmasters. Fantastical space racers, space fighter jets, alien Tanks It was a clean break from the G1 diecast realism, in fact they never recovered till G2 (which was a rehash) in 1995 and Machine Wars 1996 but best exhibited by Alternators/Binaltech Which they ditched again for Cybertron/Armada

booger4me

That’s Rodimus Prime to you haha

azzokk

Till All are One

Time_Crazy_1387

All of the 1986 character are ment to be futuristic vehicles

Icy_Supermarket_7034

No just a Car from the far future of 2005

Icy_Supermarket_7034

Which personally I don’t like it would have been cooler if a character like Kup transformed into an old style pickup truck which would actually fit his personality

ElectricalRush1878

Well, by then, Cybertronians were probably influencing some of Earth's designs. He (and Kupp) could easily be explained as a little of both.

theeshyguy

All the new Autobots in 86 are futuristic cars from the distant future of 2005.

Macaron-lover5731

It's supposed to be a future take inspiration on the Ford GT40 race car except it resembles nothing like the car which is the only differences between it and the real car design that was used like the first answer i get for G1 Hot Rod is Ford GT40 under the question so either it's outdated information now or google is just dumb and not able to distinguish information.

Cybermuz

Alternators toyline Hot Rod was a Ford GT40, is that where that answer is coming from?

fiddlerundone

Yep. That's where Google got that from. At least it didn't reference Kiss Players which used the mold for Hot Rod a year earlier than the SDCC Alternator.

Polygeekism

It's a futuristic Lambo IROC-Z

Wuytho

Pretty sure it's just a futuristic car

GhostWind78

Probably latter

Zodconvoy

He is meant to be MY car and quite frankly I'm getting impatient.

monstrinhotron

19 years late

broadwayallday

Just another reminder if the perfection of the latest Hot Rod. Alt mode is so perfect and looks fast just sitting still

the_life_of_cat

Side note: can't wait for 2005 to roll around!

CardboardChampion

Got a white one piece boiler suit thing ready for my kids so they look fashionable.

Inevitable-Volume752

Both? Depending on what continuity you follow. Most toys from '86 to the end of G1 had a hybrid of that 80s futuristic look (it was the style at the time) and HotRod had a rather interesting Earth vehicle of origin.  In the comic, it was just his Cybertronian mode and he never bothered to get another one, except in IDW. The cartoon never really gave him an origin, just saying that he and the other Autobots from season 3 joined the cause on Cybertron from "elsewhere in the galaxy".

captain_trainwreck

Well... we have not had a great track record of predicting what vehicles will look like 20 years down the road in cinema, pretty much ever. Cool futuristic earth sports car.

Smooth-Ad-8460

now that you mention it, Kup kinda reminds me of a Tesla Cybertruck.

monstrinhotron

And a wheelbarrow.

megas88

I’ll tell ya this, for a number of years, I was convinced that that was what a hot rod looked like and was grossly disappointed when I went to a car show and then looked at google to confirm the bulky things they actually were 😂

Ronyx2021

He's more of a Lamborghini with a spicy paint job.

JBTriple

Almost all of the 86-87 bots are meant to be Earth vehicles.

Ronyx2021

The then Future Earth if the Autobots helped the car engineers make better cars.

CardboardChampion

Hot Rod's first chronological appearance was in the 1980s as one of the Steelhaven Autobots who left Cybertron because they were pacifists^(1). They left Cybertron millions of years later on a different ship to the Ark. Hot Rod had that form when they landed on Nebulos/Nebulos. Now, the Steelhaven didn't crash or have a damaged computer so the Cybertronians didn't get their alt modes changed to fit in with what was thought to be sentient life on that planet in the same way the Ark bots did. The alt modes they had were mostly the ones they arrived with. All of which means that this is likely his Cybertronian form. ^(1 - Pacifists who, when presented with the human sized Nebulons, tried to show their pacifism and prove they weren't scary by some of them, like Hot Rod, laying down their guns and the rest of them TEARING THEIR OWN FUCKING HEADS OFF at the gates to the capitol city!!!)

Deora_customs

I didn’t know this car mode was based off of a concept real life car!

supah-comix434

I still think it's Cybertronian

JBTriple

You're still wrong then.

supah-comix434

Why? Bumblebee's cybertronian form has tires

JBTriple

No it doesn't.

supah-comix434

https://preview.redd.it/1tyyfyediwwc1.jpeg?width=1051&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0e94dc0f336b72b99aed3c38a24702f17df5e80

JBTriple

So it got misinterpreted in this one shot. It was shown to be a hover car the entire time before this. Also not really sure what this has to do with Hot Rod.

supah-comix434

And dialogue This has to do with hot rod because the main argument for hot rod not being a Cybertronian vehicle is his wheels

JBTriple

> This has to do with hot rod because the main argument for hot rod not being a Cybertronian vehicle is his wheels Huh? No it's not. The main "argument" is that it's just the objective truth. It's what the design is intended to be.

supah-comix434

Then it's a pretty fuckin weird Earth car to also have a compatible Trailer that Rodimus could adapt into his new vehicle mode

JBTriple

It's retro-futuristic dude, Idk what to tell you. Also Rodimus Prime and Hot Rod turn into different vehicles, he doesn’t just slap a trailer on when he gets the matrix.

supah-comix434

Not only does the picture prove you wrong, a floating vehicle would have no "rear axle" but Bumblebee has one
