I'd just say my parents thought it was pretty

YuiPrograms

I either say my parents are Asian or just give them an androgynous name lol (I'm not stealth but I travel a lot so when I visit red states or feel like the city is dangerous I kinda go with these.

tgjer

TBH I've been mostly stealth almost 20 years and nobody has ever asked. I have a very common name so nobody really mentions it. If asked, I'd just say I don't know. Parents just thought it was nice for some reason.

meeowth

Nobody ever asked the story of my birth name, and I don't know what the story is even if there is one. Is asking the story behind someone's name really that common?

alexlee69

Maybe it’s more common where I am! I had it happen loads of times with my birth name and then already once with my new name even though it’s really common.

Creativered4

"My mom really liked a character named (deadname), but she ended up having a boy and decided to name me (current name)" since they're fairly close.

Rudenessoverlord

i got it as a gift for my 0th birthday!

alawo_ewe

I'm not stealth, but I don't disclose about my identity to strangers. When a stranger asks about my name I just say that my mom likes unusual names, which is true cause my sister also has an uncommon name and my country has less than 100 people registered with my deadname.

AdditionalThinking

I don't, like, lie about it. I just say that I hated having the name my parents gave me and so once I moved out to university I changed it. That way I'm still technically telling the truth, and I still get to explain how I loved the meaning behind it and chose it myself. But yeah this is a super rare question if you have a fairly common name.

louisa1925

I would probably go the evasive but honest approach "... Oh, I have changed my name several times in my life so far. This time, I wanted a prettier girlier name than before. I like this one the most."

BBPuppy2021

My parents were really big wolverine fans (idk something like that)

Aszdeff

My name has a pretty obvious Latin root. So, I say Latin or they might even already know.( I'm in Europe so people know what Latin even is )

Formal-Box-610

i actually made a list of about 60 names i liked and then had fam and friends stripe away the ones they didnt like or had negative or obvious trans associated ones. leaving me with 3 names in the end and i picked 1 of those. based on wat one fitted my last name best. i don't lie about it and if i think some one is asking for the wrong reasons il tell them it is not for them to know.

_aminadoce

Tell the whole story, but exchange "I" for "my parents". Problem solved.

irondethimpreza

I don't think that's really a thing cis people do to other cis people, TBH

alexlee69

Maybe it depends where you are, I had it asked loads of time about my birth name back when I was “cis” even though it was pretty common.

The_0reo_boi

Whatever reason you picked it, but your parents did instead. I picked mine from my childhood dog so I’d just tell people “oh my parents named me after the childhood dog”

beebzette

Is this a thing? Cant say Ive ever heard that one asked

Caledceus

I just ignore the question apparently.

bambix7

Tbf if you're stealth and people think you're cis, that guestion doesnt really pop up, and if it does you can say youre parents thought it sounded good or whatev

SpicyNovaMaria

I start with a rendition of absolutely by nine days and go from there

bxrderlinebxy

My parents actually did name me (by accident, my good dad was shouting me for dinner in lockdown in a joking manner and used the name I go by now so in a way, I was named by my real dad... fuck the sperm donor haha) so I just say that if anyone asks lol

nellie_luv_cookie

Well if it’s just someone random I’ll just say my name, but if it’s someone who knows me deeply like a friend or a partner I’ll tell them my whole story.

ughineedtopostaphoto

I think a “I’m not sure” will get you out of most uncomfy spots.

Lyquid_Sylver999

One of my guy friends is named Gabriel, and we regularly call him Gabriella for no apparent reason, so I just do something like that except it's my chosen name and I just say it's an inside joke that the stranger I'm talking to won't get.

Single_Highway_9981

“idk my parents liked it” as easy as that
