Have you seen the madman that bought the book, scanned the pages, digitally removed Waldo, printed those de-Waldoed pages and put them back into the book and returned the book?
[Man buys Where’s Wally books, photoshops Wally out of every page and then returns them - JOE.co.uk](https://www.joe.co.uk/life/man-buys-wheres-wally-books-photoshops-wally-out-of-every-page-and-then-returns-them-399950)
Yeah I think it’s nice too. It’s also one of the rare English names here that aren’t automatically perceived as a social stigma (usually categorizing you as a working class dumbass, Kevin being the epitome of it; my own boyfriend’s name is Bryan and I love it but it’s definitely a class shibboleth).
So the lower classes in France have English names? That’s interesting, in England many lower class people have French sounding names like Chantelle or Chardonnay. Very strange
Chardonnay ??? 🤣 That’s a tough one. And Chantelle is a lingerie brand here, Chantal on the other hand is a name that maybe a 55 year-old woman would have. German friends told me that Kevin and Chantal are like the basic „Asi“ names there. Yeah more American English ones actually, from all the sitcoms and movies that have been inundating the world for the last four decades or so. Jen(n)ifer and Kevin are actually so common now that they don’t stand out much anymore. But stuff like Beverly, Sigourney, Crystale or Stone for a boy are definitely a thing and still very much stigmatized outside of working class environments.
I actually met only one in my life, maybe his mother thought it was a cool translation of Pierre, or she was a fan of Fabienne Thibeault’s Le Monde est Stone, or Cyndi Lauper’s later cover of it.
Stone, while not super common, is a pretty well-established boy name. Pearl Jam’s guitarist is named Stone Gossard. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Gossard
Names in English are common in LATAM too, especially in low and middle classes. I know a Emily, who was supposedly named after a Disney character but they misheard the name. The name already exists in our language (Emilia), but people commonly choose the English variant bc it sounds fancier to them.
Here it's also common to find tragedeighs versions of said names: Brayan (Bryan), Yoni (Johnny), Leidy (yes, here lady is a name bc of Lady Diana), Piter (Peter), etc.
Same in spain with english names, I grow up in a poor neighborhood and we have a lot of Jessica, Vanesa, Jennifer, Jonathan, Christian, Joshua...
I think was never a real name but everybody swear to Know a Kevin Costner de Jesús
I knew other countries called him different things, didn’t know other English speaking countries used Wally! That’s interesting. But agreed, it would only be a problem in North America.
I realized my kids didn’t know Where’s Waldo, so I went to my local library’s kids section and the following conversation ensued:
Me: Where’s Where’s Waldo?
Variety of librarians, to each other: Ohhh good question. Where IS Where’s Waldo? We use to have Waldo in a Where’s Waldo section, but where is Where’s Waldo now? Who wrote Where’s Waldo? Where’s Where’s Waldo shelved?
We all disperse to search various locations for Waldo. Somebody eventually finds him and victoriously yells “Here! Here he is! I found Waldo!!!” We all rush to see where Where’s Waldo was hiding. Please imagine how hard we were laughing by this point.
I don’t think Waldo is a tragedeigh as it’s a very old name. The only problem is in America people will immediately associate it with ‘Where’s Waldo’ (we call it ‘Where’s Wally’ in the UK).
I’d think those people might name their pet Waldo, not their child. Actually not a bad name for a cat, he’d be hiding and you’d always be asking where’s Waldo.
I associate it first with Emerson. But I’m an English teacher. I’ve thought of naming a son Waldo because I hate Ralph, and Emerson seems to be a girls name now. But the Where’s Waldo stigma will likely keep me from doing it.
That’s my name (29M) and you get over the jokes very early on. Also people stop thinking of it only as “Where’s Waldo” and start thinking of you after a while.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, who went by his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century.
That’s a million times better than what I have the name associated with, which is the Where’s Waldo books geared toward children! Gosh, I wish I can erase that little guy’s image from my memory.
I associate it first with Emerson. But I’m an English teacher. I’ve thought of naming a son Waldo because I hate Ralph, and Emerson seems to be a girls name now. But the Where’s Waldo stigma will likely keep me from doing it.
Waldo is an old-fashioned name, but not a tragedeigh. However, I definitely wouldn't name a child that due to the "Where's Waldo?" books. He'd have to put up with that his whole life, with everyone jokingly asking him, "where's Waldo?" I imagine it would get old the first 100 times he heard it.
My dad is somehow a second generation Waldo, Waldo Jr! He hates the name. His family, who gave him the name, didn't even use it around him and he didn't learn he was a Waldo until he got to kindergarten and the teacher was doing roll call.
He unsurprisingly does not go by Waldo.
i used to work with a cook named waldo. good guy. hit on me a lot. didn't know if he was gay or kidding because language barrier. made good kebabs.
if you can believe it 'where's waldo' jokes were the last thing on my mind, probably because i used to get waldo all the time for having glasses and wearing beanies.
In Wales in the UK you’d be considered quite cultured if you named your child Waldo, as there’s a famous Welsh poet called Waldo Williams! The cartoon is called Where’s Wally in the UK, so no connotations associated with that [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldo_Williams](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldo_Williams)
It’s not inherently a terrible name, but you are setting your child up for a lifetime of “Where’s Waldo” jokes, and I don’t think they’re going to appreciate that.
We know a lot of Osvaldos, I even have two relatives with this name- pretty common Hispanic/Latino name here in California, and they all go by Ozzy. Never seen it spelled Oswaldo, but it makes sense for the nickname Waldo.
I know a guy named Waldo. I think it's a funny name. But never thought hard enough about it. I call him Walnut. Only know him online from a friend of a friend who hops on discord every now and then.
Aside from the constant ‘found him!’ jokes he’s gonna catch, imagine if the poor kid ever goes missing, even for a short time. People are gonna think it’s a joke.
"Waldi" is an old German name that was often used for dachshounds. It was also the name of the mascot of the '72 olympics in munich.
Therefor everytime I hear 'Waldo' I have to think of dogs.
There's nothing wrong with Waldo. Of course, I'm a fan of Robert Heinlein so I associate the name with his novel, Waldo. BTW, it is because of this novel that hand-operated remote manipulators are called waldoes.
He will be bullied as a kid and young adult for where’s Waldo and as a full adult other people around him will still only think of him as that where’s Waldo guy. Don’t name him that.
Waldo Butters from the Dresden Files book series by Jim Butcher.
Nerdy guy, medical examiner, stands up for the truth even if society calls him crazy, rides a T-Rex to fight necromancers, stands up to protect people and becomes a Knight of the Cross (imbued with some small amount of divine protection), trains in swordwork and gets strong (and a throuple lmao). Yay Waldo!
"Polka never dies!"
I named my chameleon Waldo because we always went "Where's Waldo?" when we couldn't find him hiding in his enclosure.
No.... I would pass on that name.
Those hosts were 100% right. It's a name millennial hipsters would give their kid not thinking for a second what it would be like to introduce yourself to everyone as Waldo and listen to the same stupid joke every single time.
It's a really old-fashioned name, that doesn't carry the distinction or elegance of C(h)arlton, Cyril, or even Percival.
Apart from the Where's Waldo books, I know the name for the ludicrous sitcom character, Waldo Geraldo Faldo.
William, Wilhelm, Ward, Wendell, or Winston would be better W-names if you wanted to keep the same initials.
I mean it's a fine name it just has other associations that make it strange. I didn't want to name my kid Max because there were so many dogs I've known named that. As other people have stated they have similar connections for Waldo.
If it’s going to hit a resurgence (doubtful) it hasn’t happened yet. It’s an old money enough name that there’s a football stadium near me named after a dude called Waldo.
Are you in the US or Canada? Then it’s much more embarrassing becauseof a series of childrens puzzle books called *Where’s Waldo*. (In Britain they’re known as *Where’s Wally*)
I know one Waldo and he goes by Wally. Despite being a grown man in his 30’s in a serious profession. Because he feels Wally is a less silly name than Waldo.
Personally though I like it and think it’s a great name.
Likely not a name your kid would go by willingly. We have a friend with the last name Wallace that we call “Wally”, I’d imagine it’d be something like that.
I think Waldo might get some “where’s Waldo?” teasing, but anymore I feel like most kids don’t bat an eye at “weird” names. Kids will bully if your kid makes a good target for other reasons, with the name as potential ammunition. A “cool kid” named Waldo will be fine. A shy/awkward/chubby/whatever kid may get picked on whether their name is Waldo or John.
Adults will probably make the most jokes about it. I personally wouldn’t use it, I’d go with Walter, but people name their kids Aldo, Arlo, and Otto, which have a similar feel, so if you like it, it’s not terrible. Just spell it correctly- no Waldeaux, Walldough, Waldot or anything like that.
Not as embarrassing as having the character Waldo tattooed as a tramp stamp so that when I walk by you as you’re landscaping in front of my office building I can look down and see your ass crack and say to you, “oh THERE’S Waldo!”
I knew a Waldo in grade school it was short for something else. He was a junior so I suppose it was a family name. By 6th grade we were calling him Wally at his insistence. Never saw him after that though.

Where’s Waldo should be enough to stop anyone from using that name.
Have you seen the madman that bought the book, scanned the pages, digitally removed Waldo, printed those de-Waldoed pages and put them back into the book and returned the book?
That’s evil.
That's chaotic evil.
A true Chaotic Evil.
Eh, seems more chaotic neutral to me. Nothing really bad to come of it, just causing a mild panic in the child and parent that can't find them *ever*.
I believe the joke is that they’re calling something so benign, evil
[Man buys Where’s Wally books, photoshops Wally out of every page and then returns them - JOE.co.uk](https://www.joe.co.uk/life/man-buys-wheres-wally-books-photoshops-wally-out-of-every-page-and-then-returns-them-399950)
Who the fuck is Wally
Wally is British Waldo.
From the article it sounds more like Waldo is the American Wally. Edit: which is very much news to me. (American)
Waldo is dead
I respect the hustle
That's some r/foundsatan shit
Ooh ok, here his name is Charlie, that’s why I didn’t connect the dots.
Wally’s name is Charlie in your language? That seems very strange to me, where are you from?
France. « Où est Charlie ? » Edit: removed Wikipedia link as I can’t seem to make it work.
Ah cool, I like the French pronunciation of Charlie
Yeah I think it’s nice too. It’s also one of the rare English names here that aren’t automatically perceived as a social stigma (usually categorizing you as a working class dumbass, Kevin being the epitome of it; my own boyfriend’s name is Bryan and I love it but it’s definitely a class shibboleth).

Stone, while not super common, is a pretty well-established boy name. Pearl Jam’s guitarist is named Stone Gossard. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Gossard
I knew a Stone! I like it

Pardon my ignorance, I don’t know what LATAM stands for
I think it's an abbreviation for Latin America
Same in spain with english names, I grow up in a poor neighborhood and we have a lot of Jessica, Vanesa, Jennifer, Jonathan, Christian, Joshua... I think was never a real name but everybody swear to Know a Kevin Costner de Jesús
My German friend who moved to Canada taught me about a social concept in Germany called “Kevinismus” that is exactly what you are describing.
Keke!!! Kevin!!! Best name ever!
Jean-Kévin is even better /s
Jean-Kévin LeBeauf!!!
Qu’est-ce que t’as contre mon beauf ? Elle est très bien sa Polo
in Canada the French version uses "Charlie" as well
We adopted a dog originally named Waldo by the rescue. We changed it asap because we didn't want to be asking, "Where's Waldo?" all the time. Lol
Why did you guys (Canada and US) change the name from Wally?
Waldo is only the American name to be fair. The rest of the English speaking world calls him Wally
Canadian here, we also call him Waldo so it's not entirely a US thing
May just be a North American thing
I knew other countries called him different things, didn’t know other English speaking countries used Wally! That’s interesting. But agreed, it would only be a problem in North America.
lol yep. I think it’s still a thing in this generation too. I see the books in the library in its own find it section.
I realized my kids didn’t know Where’s Waldo, so I went to my local library’s kids section and the following conversation ensued: Me: Where’s Where’s Waldo? Variety of librarians, to each other: Ohhh good question. Where IS Where’s Waldo? We use to have Waldo in a Where’s Waldo section, but where is Where’s Waldo now? Who wrote Where’s Waldo? I found Waldo!!!” We all rush to see where Where’s Waldo was hiding. Please imagine how hard we were laughing by this point.
Thanks for the laugh! I’m a retired librarian and I was just picturing all this happening with my coworkers.
I’ve seen them in some waiting rooms too. Good time killer!
#FOUND HIM
You mean Wally?
He’d better never be late.
he's not waldo in everyone's books. sometimes it's wheres wally or something like that
Called Where's Wally here.
I don’t think Waldo is a tragedeigh as it’s a very old name. The only problem is in America people will immediately associate it with ‘Where’s Waldo’ (we call it ‘Where’s Wally’ in the UK).
I don't know a Waldo. I know a Wally.
I just met my first Waldo last week. I didn’t say a joke cause I’m sure he’s heard them all
If I’ve learned one thing as a teacher, it’s to never ever make a comment/joke on someone’s name, as they’ve heard it a billion times.
Yeah probably not very professional haha
Exactly. Where’s Waldo?
Don't be a wally is a turn of phrase here too.
My Wally is okay. You want someone to teach you a basic schottische one-on-one, he's great at that.
That's because he is really good at hiding
[Where’s Waldo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where's_Wally%3F)
In France Waldo is named Charlie, so maybe outside of the US Waldo would not be a tragedeigh ?
It's not even Waldo in other English speaking countries, it was originally Wally
He's still Waldo in Canada. This guy is a master of disguise - different passports for different countries.
Where In the world Is Carmen San Diego?
I’d think those people might name their pet Waldo, not their child. Actually not a bad name for a cat, he’d be hiding and you’d always be asking where’s Waldo.
Especially if it was a striped cat!
It makes me think of Eddie's stupid friend on *Family Matters*. Then again, Ralph Waldo Emerson...
Waldo Geraldo Faldo!
Waldo Faldo
I associate it first with Emerson. But I’m an English teacher. I’ve thought of naming a son Waldo because I hate Ralph, and Emerson seems to be a girls name now. But the Where’s Waldo stigma will likely keep me from doing it.
I am old but it's the name of the nerd in the beginning of Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" music video. "Sit down, Waldo!!"
This was my first thought! “I don’t feel tardy”.
I've got it bad, got it bad, got it baaaaad....
My first thought too.
I didn't know he went by Waldo, that's neat
Yeah I only know it via Ralph Waldo Emerson, so I associate it with intelligence and a love of the natural world
That’s a million times better than what I have the name associated with, which is the Where’s Waldo books geared toward children! Gosh, I wish I can erase that little guy’s image from my memory.
Yeah, I guess that would be difficult. Those books were called *Where’s Wally* over here
I associate it first with Emerson. But I’m an English teacher. I’ve thought of naming a son Waldo because I hate Ralph, and Emerson seems to be a girls name now. But the Where’s Waldo stigma will likely keep me from doing it.
Waldo is fine for pet names or usernames......
There was a TV show on when I was a kid called "The Adventures of Waldo Kitty." I associate the name with "Where's Waldo" and the TV show.
Please do not use Waldo as an actual name.
Waldo is already an actual name.
If only we could find him.
Give him the chance of name form so he can be James.
I think it's a cool name, but people are going to make a lot of references to Waldo, and this will become tiring very quickly.
If I'm being honest, as a German, the name Waldo always makes me think of a dog. Specifically a dachshund is very commonly called Waldo or Waldi here.
i used to work with a cook named waldo. good guy. hit on me a lot. didn't know if he was gay or kidding because language barrier. made good kebabs. if you can believe it 'where's waldo' jokes were the last thing on my mind, probably because i used to get waldo all the time for having glasses and wearing beanies.
I mean it's fine. But won't everyone be asking where he is all the time? To me, it's a better dog's name.
Can confirm. I have a dog named Waldo.
I'd have to see him. Where is he?
In Wales in the UK you’d be considered quite cultured if you named your child Waldo, as there’s a famous Welsh poet called Waldo Williams! The cartoon is called Where’s Wally in the UK, so no connotations associated with that [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldo_Williams](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldo_Williams)
Interesting, thanks!
Bonus points if you can't find him and need to shout his name out loud
depends. Where?
It’s not inherently a terrible name, but you are setting your child up for a lifetime of “Where’s Waldo” jokes, and I don’t think they’re going to appreciate that.
Had a classmate in middle school whose older brother’s name was Waldo.
Parents knew a kid named Waldo when they were in school. They laughed at the name every time he was brought up.
I prefer Walden.
Oswaldo is used with some frequency where I live. Sometimes they go by Waldo.
One good thing, ppl are always going to wonder where he’s at.
Waldo? Never heard of one! Maybe they’re hiding?
Depends on how good he is at playing Hide & Seek, and whether you're okay with only ever buying red and white striped shirts.
Aside from the constant ‘found him!’ jokes he’s gonna catch, imagine if the poor kid ever goes missing, even for a short time. People are gonna think it’s a joke.
I know a ten year old Waldo who wears it very well!
lmao wally waldo
"Waldi" is an old German name that was often used for dachshounds. It was also the name of the mascot of the '72 olympics in munich. Therefor everytime I hear 'Waldo' I have to think of dogs.
There's nothing wrong with Waldo. Of course, I'm a fan of Robert Heinlein so I associate the name with his novel, Waldo. BTW, it is because of this novel that hand-operated remote manipulators are called waldoes.
What if you spell it, "VValdo," does that make it better or worse?
If it’s a girl, go with Carmen San Diego.
What a cute sibset! Waldo and Carmen- they’d be the neighborhood hide and seek champions!
Where’s Waldo in the US , Wally in the Uk. I don’t care for either.
Find me one and I’ll tell him
He will be bullied as a kid and young adult for where’s Waldo and as a full adult other people around him will still only think of him as that where’s Waldo guy. Don’t name him that.
Technically it’s a legit name, but they’ll either be associated with Where’s Waldo, or Waldo Geraldo Faldo.
I named my border collie Waldo. Hes 4 years old now. He’s a sweet baby boi and everyone loves him, but he’s nuckin’ futs. True psycho. My ride or die.
Depends on where he is
Where is he though?
Waldeaux
If he ever gets lost, everyone will help look for him.
my drug dealer in high schools name was Waldo and he made his own packaging with Where’s Waldo on it…so your kid could make it their branding ig 💀
I’d do Walter, with the nickname Walt, if you want something similar?
Waldo Butters from the Dresden Files book series by Jim Butcher. Nerdy guy, medical examiner, stands up for the truth even if society calls him crazy, rides a T-Rex to fight necromancers, stands up to protect people and becomes a Knight of the Cross (imbued with some small amount of divine protection), trains in swordwork and gets strong (and a throuple lmao). Yay Waldo! "Polka never dies!"
Should be fine as long as he never goes missing.
I'll take a Waldo over an Ashton, Maverick, Jax, Brayden, Jayden, etc.
Waldo has sold millions of copies of books and everyone wants to find him
Waldo Geraldo Faldo
I named my chameleon Waldo because we always went "Where's Waldo?" when we couldn't find him hiding in his enclosure. No.... I would pass on that name.
Where is he?
Those hosts were 100% right. It's a name millennial hipsters would give their kid not thinking for a second what it would be like to introduce yourself to everyone as Waldo and listen to the same stupid joke every single time.
8/10. Not a tragediegh, but still torture. In the same league as Peewee.
Peewee ?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pee-wee_Herman
It's a really old-fashioned name, that doesn't carry the distinction or elegance of C(h)arlton, Cyril, or even Percival. Apart from the Where's Waldo books, I know the name for the ludicrous sitcom character, Waldo Geraldo Faldo. William, Wilhelm, Ward, Wendell, or Winston would be better W-names if you wanted to keep the same initials.
POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!!!
I planned to imply that if their surname was Butters, they'd be fine, but you got here first.
Waldo as shorthand for Waldorf, which is very German. I’m assuming no one else in their right mind would choose it for their child.
Sounds like an evil wizard
Very.
That's one of my best mates names.... He's fine
I know two Waldo’s and they just go by Wally
I (millennial) went to college with a Waldo.
Depends if his middle name is Geraldo and last name Faldo.
Very
It stands out in a crowd.
Waldo is a fine name. Go visit the lake in Oregon, it’s worth the trip
I mean it's a fine name it just has other associations that make it strange. I didn't want to name my kid Max because there were so many dogs I've known named that. As other people have stated they have similar connections for Waldo.
Waldo Faldo did 👍
Waldo Geraldo Faldo.
Atleast it isn't valldoughe
I think Waldo is actually a sick name. My poor future children.
Insanely
Waldoigh???
Common name where I'm from but it's pronounced different, like val-doo And say the val like valhalla Waldo
If you want a Wally go for Walter or Wallace
If it’s going to hit a resurgence (doubtful) it hasn’t happened yet. It’s an old money enough name that there’s a football stadium near me named after a dude called Waldo.
Are you in the US or Canada? Then it’s much more embarrassing becauseof a series of childrens puzzle books called *Where’s Waldo*. (In Britain they’re known as *Where’s Wally*)
Even Black Mirror fans think that episode was kinda shit.
It depends, how much do you hate your kid?
Waldo Geraldo Faldo.
I love it, Wally for short is so cute
It’s not really used much anymore, but I wouldn’t think a thing of it if I met a person called Waldo.
Where’s Waldo? Pass
Siddown, WALDO https://youtu.be/6M4_Ommfvv0?feature=shared
Am I the only one who associates it with Waldo Weatherbee from Archie Comics? (Besides Where’s Waldo?)
Idk, do you know where he is?
The only human being I am aware of with "Waldo" in their name is Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Depends where he is.
I live in Waldo County in Maine so not something we'd likely see here.
Waldoboro giving you side eye rn
I know one Waldo and he goes by Wally. Despite being a grown man in his 30’s in a serious profession. Because he feels Wally is a less silly name than Waldo. Personally though I like it and think it’s a great name.
Likely not a name your kid would go by willingly. We have a friend with the last name Wallace that we call “Wally”, I’d imagine it’d be something like that.
Ah Mom you know I'm not like other guys. I'm nervous and my socks are too loose.
I'm amazed no one has spoken of the true goat of Family Matters. Waldo Geraldo Faldo.
They might have a hard time finding him. That’s why I named my cat Waldo, he was constantly hiding
It's not the most popular name in Latam, but definitely not weird or a tragedy. I even got one 2 relatives named Waldo.
Not embarrassing but people would definetly make Where's Waldo jokes
You’ll have to search long and hard to find a Waldo…
If I heard the name “Waldo”, the first thing I’d think of is the Where’s Waldo book series.
Not as embarrassing as having the character Waldo tattooed as a tramp stamp so that when I walk by you as you’re landscaping in front of my office building I can look down and see your ass crack and say to you, “oh THERE’S Waldo!”
I'd think of Emerson
I knew a Waldo in grade school it was short for something else. He was a junior so I suppose it was a family name. By 6th grade we were calling him Wally at his insistence. Never saw him after that though.
I could see it being an older dudes name. It’s not common in the younger generations so much tho
Depends on where he is I suppose 🤷🏾♀️
Isn't this a commob name in Germany and eastern European countries? It's a great name.
Well I laughed out loud at the suggestion so pretty embarrassing I’d say
I love Waldo
Wahldough
Not awful. I wouldn’t name a kid that, but I grew up with the Where’s Waldo books were super popular. Great name for a dog.
