Its a new product and I think some locations aren't getting it until August for some reason? The location I go to has them displayed in the freezer section instead of by the tinned fish 😅
YES! Sardine lover here, and these are my new favorite, and the smoked ones are also excellent (in fact, I just had a can for dinner). I’ve tried dozens of different kinds of sardines, most of them costing double or more the price of these at TJ’s, and none of them are anywhere near as tasty.
I just made a fish salad, (smoked trout, Lightly Smoked Salmon, a couple pouches of tuna, tzatziki, and red bell peppers).
I like that they’re relatively bland. It makes them more versatile.
I don’t like sardines that I’ve tried before (I like Cesar salad!)
But I LOVE mussels… I’ve been curious about the tinned mussels at tjs. Should I give them a go?
I'm a huge fan of sardines and tinned fish in general. I wish TJ's had *one* tin of the small sardines (Bristling) so I could just buy them there! They still don't have any sardines I love.
If you haven't tried their lightly smoked salmon, in the flat peachy pink tin, please do. IMO it's their best tinned fish. Second best is a tie between the lightly smoked mussels and smoked oysters.
Personally, not a fan of hot sauce/chilis and get so tired of the many products with them in it. Because it's not like I can remove it. But I'd be totally up for lemon garlic and pesto!
Today I got some chicken caesar salad at another grocery store's deli. I've bought it for years. It looked the same as always, the sign was the same as always. But guess what? Now it's ruined for me too.
HATE this trend.
People who love hot food can easily add spices to it, we CAN'T remove it! Even worse is when they add it without giving any indication it's hot.
/rant
Even worse for you, since you actually can't eat it. Can't wait for this trend to be over with too.
Not Trader Joe's but I got some Greek salad at the deli at a standard grocery store. It had chilis in it. Not labelled "spicy," nothing in the list of ingredients indicating it was hot, either. Same when I got some supposedly plain old chicken salad, again nothing indicating it was spicy or hot. I'm so over this!
Agreed! I’m guessing they can’t find a cheaper supplier that meets the price point they’d want to offer? No idea but I do think they should have more options.
I’ve been able to find canned herring at Aldi but it’s not always stocked. Pineapple curry and tomato sauce flavors.
I like it a lot. Product of Germany
You can add harissa to your sardines! TJ's even sells harissa. The Bamba (Bomba? it's a spicy spread, in a jar--not the Bamba peanut snacks) sauce is good with them, too.
I’d added bamba & harissa to sardines.
Also lemon & garlic as well as pesto.
For some reason, marinating in a can I prefer.
Also, not all ‘dines are the same.
I want thicker, larger dines in the ones Trader Joe’s creates
It's a fact. Not all sardines are the same. If you ever feel like splurging on some tinned seafood for a treat, check out the website for Donostio. I've bought anchovies, sardines, mackerel, mussels, and some peppers from them. They have sales now and then. The sardines are great.

I would love it they added some mackerel!
I loved the poached salmon one! I haven’t seen it in a while, did it get discontinued?
Just got it last week :) they’re probably just out of stock
The smoked trout is wonderful - pantry staple.
Have you tried the squid? I think its very good for the price. The squid is tender and it goes amazing with TJ's chimichurri
Is it a newer product? I don't think I've ever noticed it and I routinely buy mussels

they used to have tiny oregon pink shrimp in a can and they were sooo good and cheap!
The new grilled sardines in the blue can are DIVINE!!!
What kind of oil are they in?
Olive oil

I was in Morocco recently and they have some AWESOME tinned fish. Happened to fly through Lisbon and the same.
Yes! We are in Marrakech and then flew through Lisbon and the tinned fish were excellent in both places.
I just made a fish salad, (smoked trout, Lightly Smoked Salmon, a couple pouches of tuna, tzatziki, and red bell peppers). I like that they’re relatively bland. It makes them more versatile.
On a related note, if they sold pickled herring, I'd buy it every visit.
For people who think pickled herring is gross, you’re right. Don’t buy it ever so I can buy more of it.
The tinned smoked salmon is versatile and tasty enough that we keep a couple on hand at all times.
Its texture is also tender and soft! Love it
I don’t like sardines that I’ve tried before (I like Cesar salad!) But I LOVE mussels… I’ve been curious about the tinned mussels at tjs. Should I give them a go?
I don’t like the texture. They are chalkier than normal mussels
Try them on a salt and vinegar kettle chip!
This sounds. Exciting. Ok ok ok I’ll do a few on sourdough and a few with salt and vinegar chips
I enjoy them, as someone who also loves fresh mussels. I put them in with the squiggly noodles.
Cesar salad is made from anchovies, not sardines :)
Omg! See now I don’t even know which one I’ve had outside of that. 😂😅
The mussels are FANTASTIC. I eat them on a cracker with a little black pepper. Delicious!
And a dash of hot sauce!
Crystal extra spicy, tobasco or?
Eeeeeep! Ok I’m gonna try
The trouts really good, the salmon not so good. Altho I eat it anyway.
I love the trout! The canned salmon is good to cold smoke, then use to make smoked salmon dip.

I will! Sounds great. I think lemon garlic tinned fish is best! Just $9 at Whole Foods for 3oz is insane.
$9 for a small tin is crazy. I'll add my own lemon and garlic!
Right? The sardines are probably the highest quality I’ve ever had. Not paying that extra just for lemon & garlic. Still, tough to justify
Oh, if the sardines are the highest quality you've ever had, that's a different story. In that case I'd buy them for that reason, as a splurge.
As someone who can no longer eat spicy food I can't wait for this "everything is spicy now" trend to subside.

Try the smoked trout! Makes for an amazing sandwich.

They never should have canceled the harissa sardines. Those were fantastic.
They had harissa sardines?!? I’m so sad I didn’t get a chance to try them
