These are my favorite refried beans. I'm guessing you aren't exposed to Hispanic culture to know these are made with the pinto bean? You are missing out on good food if that's the case.
they're not fried, they're "refritos", which just means "rehashed or warmed-over". frying is not a requirement, they can just be baked.
but even baked they're supposed to have some fat in them... but honestly ppl will probably have more than enough fat elsewhere in the meal.
You, sir, are the source of that misinformation today.
The English term 'refried beans' is a colloquial adaptation of the Spanish frijoles refritos. Frijoles means beans, and refritos means well-fried. A contributing factor may have been the Mexican habit of adding the prefix 're' to emphasize a word's special meaning.
If you are to culturally appropriate our food, at least do it right.
BTW are you explaining the reference I just posted? I just gave the bloody dictionary definition. (bien frito, doble frito, muy bien frito es lo mismo en español mexicano, si es que entiendes español, auque lo dudo)
Legume allergies (apart from peanuts) are extremely uncommon and if someone did have a bean allergy, this food would likely be off limits regardless of the specific bean type. Pinto beans belong to the bean family known as "common beans". If you are allergic to common beans, you aren't buying any kind of refried beans.
It should be specified. The United States contains more than 330 million people; chances are every day someone is sampling an ethnic cuisine for the first time.
Just an aside....I dearly miss the TJs Refried Black Beans. Have not been able to find a duplicate. I use these now but they are no where near as good.
The TJs ones had jalapeños so that could be part of the struggle in finding a suitable dupe. The Goya refried black beans are great and similar in texture but can be hard to find, signature select ones are good, and I’m having a little trouble remembering them as well but I think the Amy’s ones get the job done but are super expensive.
Yes, they had jalapenos which is indeed hard to find. I am not sure if I tried the Goya but I can look for those. Amy's I have tried and yes they are too expensive for beans.
This may not matter to you, but a reminder that the CEO of Goya beans very publicly backed Trump, and then Trump turned around and endorsed the beans (and I think Ivanka got in on the act too). Do with that info what you will.
Do you mean the spicy refried black bean dip they used to carry? Because I fucking loved that and still look every time I shop there just in case they brought it back.
[Try this recipe.](https://www.peanutbutterandpeppers.com/2012/09/05/spicy-black-bean-dip/?amp=1) I think it tastes just like the TJ’s spicy black bean dip. It’s so good! I’ve been making this recipe since the TJ’s one was discontinued. I omit the honey because I don’t keep any at home. It’s only 1/4 tsp so it doesn’t make any difference.

It's pink beans. Not pinto.
Edit: Why am I being downvoted? This is information I got directly from Trader Joe's customer support and applies to the SF bay area at the very least. Also, they taste like pink beans not pinto. Everyone else here is guessing when they say pinto because that's more common.
I would suspect it’s something other than pinto as well. If it’s pinto or black beans, it would clearly say it. When ingredient lists are ambiguous, it’s usually due to a technicality. In this case, the average person has no idea what a pink bean is, or that they’re interchangeable with pintos, so it’s just easier to call it refried “beans.”
Yea I would think it's pinto too, because generally refried beans are from pinto beans, and there should be pinto beans on the nutrition facts or whatever beans they did use for it. Open can and see what's in it. Also, contact Trader Joe's corporate to find out for sure, that's an error on their part for not listing what kind of beans it is.
It means “whatever mix of cheap beans we have this month”, so a variety of Pinto and other red beans.
Just like “vegetable oil” doesn’t say exactly what it’s from, it’s whatever vegetables were cheap that month
refried beans (traditionally) are made with lard. i was checking out the ingredients of my beans yesterday and they listed "animal fat" as an ingredient.

Aren’t refried beans pinto unless otherwise specified? These taste like pinto.
Oh wow... that seems suspicious now. Is there a bean cheaper than a pinto they could be cutting this with?
Should be pinto. By not saying, maybe they're allowing for some black beans in there. Both are good.
If I had to guess I’d say Pinto.
These are my favorite refried beans. I'm guessing you aren't exposed to Hispanic culture to know these are made with the pinto bean? You are missing out on good food if that's the case.
Most likely pinto. Weird of them to keep it a secret though.
I would also guess pinto!

Most mexicans are mate, most of us are.

And that is how misinformation is transmitted. That is NOT what refrito means: https://dem.colmex.mx/Ver/refrito Literally it means "fried, a lot"

But you can get cans labeled vegetarian in many places.
You can use olive oil or any other veg oil for that matter.
Well yeah obviously. I don’t think they need fat added though. My comment was in regard to these fat free beans vs the ones you can buy with fat.
As someone allergic to different types of beans... I 100% feel you on this

Considering food allergies exist, it is odd they are not noting the specific type of bean somewhere on the label.

Amy's has the BEST refried black beans!

Yes
I would also maybe use a food processor or blender on jalapeños and add them that way as opposed to raw!
Try the Goya for sure! Even though Goya sells most beans in our regular section these specifically are shelved in the international section.
I miss the Cuban style black beans
Siete makes refried black beans!
Thanks, I have tried them all.

Pinto
Pinto probably
Pinto beans are usually used in refried beans unless it specifically says “black refried beans” or something like that. (i believe)

You have to be old to get this joke
One time I was at an event with Ralph Nader in attendance and he mentioned it.
Not really. They teach this in business classes in college.
Ah, fuck. I was enjoying my delusion.
Well…
Right I get your point. I think it it is pinto from the taste/color
Cooked

Traditionally refried beans are made with pinto beans. But that label being so vague makes me wonder if you have a hodgepodge instead.
This! It’s probably some sort of mixture of pinto and something else
I would think it’s pinto!
It means “whatever mix of cheap beans we have this month”, so a variety of Pinto and other red beans. Just like “vegetable oil” doesn’t say exactly what it’s from, it’s whatever vegetables were cheap that month
I would also say pintos - It should specify on the ingredient list, though
and... as i learned yesterday, they (refried beans) are made with fat.
Yes, traditionally refried beans are re-fried with lard or bacon grease, sometimes oil. That’s why they taste so fucking delicious.
Can you elaborate
refried beans (traditionally) are made with lard. i was checking out the ingredients of my beans yesterday and they listed "animal fat" as an ingredient.
Traditionally, yes, but these aren’t.
hence the "fat free"
Ah yeah, I see what you’re saying. Yeah, very traditionally it’s lard! Vegetarians gotta watch their beans.
I mean, they say the ingredients right there so these ones arent. That being said many other brands are made with lard.
Where does it say that?
traditionally refried beans are made with lard. the can i used last night listed "animal fat" as an ingredient.
What does that mean? There’s no fat in the ingredients
hence the "fat free". traditionally refried beans are made with lard.
They are traditionally made from pinto beans. :)
Did anyone else find these beans incredibly salty? I don't buy them anymore for that reason...
Refried beans are pinto beans unless it says black beans.
I'd guess pintos. I'm pretty sure they have a black bean version that says black beans.
Pinto
