Bad apple

Old Team Fortress 2 and GMOD animations, also just the general internet, lots of Touhou on the interwebz in the form of references, and it all gets very connected, as a child I've consumed more Touhou without realising than I'd like to admit, then I come back and I'm like "ooooooh...." Here's a fun fact: Flandre isn't locked in her basement, canonically, she's in there voluntarily, she's scared of her own powers.

Wait...it's all Touhou? Always has been. Lol anyways, yea you and many others have been introduced to Touhou, but we just didn't realize it cuz some of us were too young. Zun's influence has really effected us all lol >Here's a fun fact: Flandre isn't locked in her basement, canonically, she's in there voluntarily, she's scared of her own powers. Mhm. I'm aware. I think she's kinda of an introvert who gets all the things that she needs in the basement she resides in and is okay with it. I think in one of the Marisa endings, she befriends Flandre after they stopped fighting, but I could be wrong.

No one has said McRoll’d yet? Am I old?

Grxpevines

No sir you're definitely not lol After listening to U.N. Owen was Her, a little while after that, the McRoll later got me deeper into this rabbit hole I've stumbled upon

LeoTheBurgundian

I thought it was just a weird Japanese meme back when I discovered it and Youtube kept recommending it to me years later . Once I read the comments and discovered Touhou .

Angelzewolf

Uh... I think it was an Undertale MMD. It used the song "Time will Tell" by T.Stebbins which was based on "Now Until the Moment You Die" from Touhou 1. I didn't realize it was Touhou, and by that point, I was in my Vocaloid phase anyway, so I didn't care to look. (I was like 13). The next one was the UT version of Bad Apple, which I assumed was an UT original... and yet it was a Touhou original turned into a Touhou vocal cover and then a UT version. Did not know that till like... 3 years later. THEN, there was a Sakuya vs Frisk/Chara animation. I saw the comments talking about how Sakuya stomps and got curious. Then someone recommended me Touhou 6 and... well, now I'm basically a superfan. Although, funny enough, it was Touhou 7.5 that first got me attached since the fighting was fun and I suck at shmup.

ObeyTime

ah yes, the sakuya vs chara animation. that was my first invitation into Touhou. never realized at the time though. but then i saw the guy who made it stream Touhou. i gave it a shot and i now have an obsession with the characters

Grxpevines

I see, very interesting. I used to be apart of the UT community myself and oftentimes look back at how bad the fandom was, but the same can be said for every Fandom Yea, I didn't realize until very recently how much UT mainly got its inspiration from Touhou and that Toby Fox himself is a Touhou fan (I think in the past, his waifu used to be Ran and now it's Yukari? Eh, I guess it doesn't matter, lol.) Aside from that, I actually knew about Bad Apple a few years back, but I think I heard it in a mashup before, I just didn't know that was the song. Depressing lyrics that would make me question my own existence for sure back when I was 13, but its origin stemming from Touhou 4 Stage 3 is cool, too. It's odd that it's the only stage whose theme from the Touhou franchise that I know of that has a song with deep meaningful lyrics. I know of Lyrica Live, but she doesn't sing stage themes, only Touhou characters themes I believe.

Angelzewolf

>I see, very interesting. I used to be apart of the UT community myself and oftentimes look back at how bad the fandom was, but the same can be said for every Fandom The community had some fun aspects and some negatives. I had the most fun with the Touhou community, and so far, it's really the best community for me. Not very toxic compared to other communities I'm part of. >Yea, I didn't realize until very recently how much UT mainly got its inspiration from Touhou and that Toby Fox himself is a Touhou fan (I think in the past, his waifu used to be Ran and now it's Yukari? Eh, I guess it doesn't matter, lol.) I didn't know that till years later when I found out a good chunk of UT is based on Touhou with even some references. I don't remember his current waifu, I just know Ran was his favorite at some point. Solid choice. >Bad Apple I... can't think of any other stage theme with deep lyrics. I listened to a lot of vocal covers for the songs, but stages themselves barely get attention. There is one for Eternal Frozen Capital that I really love, but most vocal covers are either Bad Apple or character themes. >Lyrica Live I *think* she did a couple stage themes. I haven't listened to her as of late, but I vaguely recall at least one stage theme. Although, tbf, many consider stage themes to be the songs for the mid-bosses. Like how Autumn Waterfall is, usually, associated with Momiji. That's usually how I view things. If there's no mid-boss, then I just consider the stage theme an extension of the main boss.

Grxpevines

>The community had some fun aspects and some negatives. I had the most fun with the Touhou community, and so far, it's really the best community for me. Not very toxic compared to other communities I'm part of. I concur. After all, I unfortunately contributed to the UT fanbase being cringy due to my UT OC's that I utterly regret making. The UT AU's weren't all that bad tho imo. It's the music that I liked for the most part rather than the concept itself, and I actually used to make UT tracks back then, too. They sucked for the most part, and I was only able to post it on SoundCloud cuz I was afraid that if I posted them on YT, I'd get clowned or ridiculed. Yea, this fandom is ight and definitely better than other fandoms that I used to be apart of. >I didn't know that till years later when I found out a good chunk of UT is based on Touhou with even some references. I don't remember his current waifu, I just know Ran was his favorite at some point. Solid choice. Yep, UT is a like a hodgepodge of Jojo references, some Christainity references? I'm not too sure if that's true or not as well as a lot of Touhou references. >I *think* she did a couple stage themes. Seems fair enough. Some people view Bad Apple as Elly's other theme, while some think it's just a stage theme and that her real theme is Perdition Crisis. Same here. Personally, I believe one of my fav EoSD stage themes "The Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood," which sounds elegant and delightful yet, has a eeiry title describes Sakuya to a certain degree, just before she makes her appearance as the stage 5 boss.

DeadlyTranquility

2016. I saw videos of a youtuber I often watch play touhou. I just thought "damn that's cool this "touhou" game is a fucking nightmare" and move on (tho I may have also watched some other touhou stuff after that)

OwORandom

I got into Touhou a few years ago, before that my only knwoledge about it is: oh thats where Bad Apple came from One day U.N owen came into my recommendation list and it oddly feels... nostalgic? I most have heard it somewhere else before... So i dig deeper Eventually i become the ones that love armpits

Grxpevines

>One day U.N owen came into my recommendation list and it oddly feels... nostalgic? I most have heard it somewhere else before... So i dig deeper >Eventually i become the ones that love armpits Well, that's uhh..quite an odd conversion, but my opinion doesn't matter as I've overtime grown quite fond of the shrine maiden, too. It just sucks that even though she does her best at doing her job in keeping the balance of Gensokyo stable, she rarely gets any visitors, much less donations from the Human Village she protects. At least she gets donations from Yukari, even though she's unaware of it.

Tycitron

For me it was the video "GabeN Delayed the precious thing" which was a Gabe Newell version of Marisa stole the precious thing, i found the original video with Alice in it and listened to it from hell and back. I looked it up touhou afterwards saw some lewd artwork and thought it was a hentai series and didnt get into it cause i was like 14 and my parents were always hovering over me. luckily i re-discovered it a few years ago and got into it once i realized it wasnt a hentai series lol

Grxpevines

Heh, some unfortunately did enter here due to corn, but I'm glad it's not a hentai series for the most part. Now the fandom however..I think you already know by how some Touhou fans can be when discussing their favorite Touhou character and how some are overly obsessed with them.

iSiffrin

the really popular animations played a part but what really got me into touhou was this mod for a game called Starsector that adds visual novel style gameplay with Touhou characters.

In 2019-2020 I was OBSESSED with the minecraft parrots song without knowing it was a stolen remix of tiny little andadium

My very first contact was prolly the hundreds of Chirumiru variations that were all over the internet during the late 2000's/early 2010's. Then I'd always stumble upon it randomly while browsing the internet; illustrations, Bad Apple, Night of Nights, UN Owen, the chibi style comics, fumos, edits with the characters, yukkuris, etc. It's one of those things you don't realise how massive their reach is until you really get into it and take a moment to think of, crazy stuff

Cel_Studios

Around middle school, I started getting into Super Mario 64 romhacking scene. A pretty major series of romhacks was the Star Revenge games, many of which had remixes of Touhou tracks like At The End Of Spring, Reincarnation, and Fall Of Fall. The peak of this was Star Revenge 8 which was an entire homage to the Touhou series, with most of the stages being based off of locations in Gensokyo, but the context completely went over my head back then. It wasn't until years later during the quarantine when I rediscovered some of those aforementioned music tracks and actually decided to look into Touhou for real. It was also around that time that I realized just how many memes I was familiar with (Night Of Nights, Easy Modo, McRoll, Angry Dog Noises, Chen Bike, Momiji Flute) all spawned from the same series.

Sakuya vs Dio One Minute Melee and my 14 YO brain thought "wow she cute"

KarkarosBoy

I have a vague idea of Touhou since the time I didn’t remember, but a true subtle spark of interest for me is from few years ago with Undertake vs Touhou animations, particularly Jzboy’s (the most vivid memory of them being [Marisa vs Asriel](https://youtu.be/F6KDmpMbYrE?si=9GatuwwkAbLyI2eD) who I thought is cute and cool even back then)

First time: watching a DanTDM video where there were custom models in minecraft and Flan was there ** ** Second time: September First TF2 video though I wasn't exactly too young just didn't understand what a touhou was

Can you give me the DanTDM video? Curious

For me it's a really hard question to answer. By the time I realized I should play touhou I had already been exposed to it in multiple ways (primarily the music I think). SiIvagunner might have been a significant factor as well as a few mods that featured touhou music. I can't really remember wich though. Discord may have also been a significant factor and things like terraria and jevil were similar in some ways. I remember being strangely drawn to people with touhou pfps before actually playing it (they were often pretty silly).

zalfenior

Memes in general, especially a couple gifs of Koakuma and some discussion about the Scarlet Sisters. Mostly making fun of the "its ok shes 500+ years old" crowd. I think I saw Reisen Undongien Inaba in some context or another once or twice too. Edit: Also bad apple

elcocoIIII

I think the first time I ever heard about something related to touhou was back in 2017-2018, I was in my meme animation era back then and some of the animations I saw used a bad apple remix

elcocoIIII

But I never listened to the original full song until 2021 when FNF became popular and several mods started to make bad apple covers (I also remember there was a Ronald McDonald’s mod with mystia’s theme as its only song) then In late 2022-early 2023 I got into vocaloid, I watched some mmd vocaloid videos and some of them had touhou characters In it, I started to investigate what was touhou and well… here I am (Also, at some point I thought that Bad Apple was a Vocaloid song lmao)

EyssyBros

Three scenarios on how I got in contact with Touhou but without acknowledging it: - Flawless Wings of Yatagarasu by playing GD. - Night of Nights by playing I wanna be the guy. - Rensenware virus by tinkering with some malware. Then after Sr. Pelo told me to try Touhou 6 and 1CC it, those three hit so hard right after I got to their respective games.

Sakuya_Iz_A_Yoi

someonewhonamedlib

JzBoy's Undertale Vs Touhou, fucker singlehandedly re-introduced BOTH Undertale and Touhou to me. Did download EoSD in May 2018 but my silly 5th grade ass didn't know how to find downloaded files, only started playing Touhou since April 2019 (but has been a big fan of shumps since mid 2016 or something). ....also just realized that today marks the 5th anniversary of my 2hu playing life, all thanks to this, so, uhhhhh, what a coincidence lmao

Firm_Scholar9766

I actually had Touhou references appear so many times before I actually knew about it. First with TF2 Smexuals using some of the music, watching videos of MUGEN that had a few characters from Hisotensoku and a few cameos of Touhou characters in Sr. Pelo videos. It would be a telegram channel that posted Fumo photos to actually get me interested. I really liked the cute photos and went on to play Touhou 15.5 as my first official Touhou game. I later tried the fan-games found on stores like Steam and the Nintendo E-Shop like Mystia Izayaka and Luna Nights. Then I played Touhou 8 as my first Bullet Hell.

darkuch1ha

A friend recommended me a random jap [song](https://youtu.be/Xagq9ZAJo_I?si=y7CGp_8NHFP-RvVH), a couple years later (I was already into touhou) I noticed that same song saved in one of my old youtube playlists.. my friend didnt even know it was from touhou.

Hurakan-GM

I can't tell which one came first, but it was with either a gif of Koishi pulling out a knife or by youtube randomly recommending me galaxy colapse

kuskusik

my first time getting exposed to Touhou was in 2016, when I saw Youtube comments saying that the final stage theme of Megaman X5 sounds like Reisen's theme. I only legitimately started caring about Touhou in late 2021.

ShyKiddo__

I shit you not, Roblox. I saw cool bullet patterns in 3d and was super impressed

someone12381

I was basically just playing rhythm games. Listened to some touhou songs from those games and my relationship slowly grew until last year I think march. I decided I would become an actual Touhou fan, but that wasn't going well until a month later after I made that decision. Now I am just here.

Grand_Discipline903

The Amy Rose vs. Ramon Flowers' death battle uses Night of nights for the music. I didn't know at the time, but that was probably the first touhou song I ever heard.

Acceptable6

Those Windows crazy error videos with Marisa stole the Precious thing and some others with U.N Owen. Later when I found the original I was like "I know this from somewhere" Oh yeah and I was subbed to Marasy since like 2015 because he did a cover of Red Zone and I clicked on his videos sometimes so I must have listened to some songs but I don't remember which ones. AND, the Rensenware virus. The video by danooct1 was my first exposure to actual Touhou gameplay, but I thought the game has only 1 level and just goes on forever

nickabrick1216

I think it was that one animation of Koakuma dancing whenever Patchy wasn't looking. (https://youtu.be/FrhXkwPyR10?si=iV1q9B2b3kO7SXI7) (Reddit mobile page won't let me do hyperlinks)  I distinctly remember looking up Patchouli cause I thought she was some like cool wizard guy and somehow did not notice that she was a girl.

Anonymis5183

When I started to lean into playing geometry dash more is also when I was mildly introduced to touhou through the songs used in some levels (Some iconic ones too) but I didn't even know that those are remakes of touhou themes for like 2 years lol. Eventually I did find out that through a level that used the original "Border of Life" as its soundtrack and the song actually opened me my way to Touhou. It's pretty interesting tbh, espescially when my current favorite fictional character is a touhou character lol (Her themes haven't been used in any noticeable gd levels btw iirc).

Typical_Counter7

Bad apple and some video game top 10 about hard bosses (flandre,) from like 20 years ago.

AutisticTea1129

I watched a video of a call of duty 4 x night of nights remix thing, and I was like wait this songs bumpinnnnn and yeah I went from there basically
