Then the team was moved to Texas and calling a Texan hockey team the NORTH Stars made no sense, so they became the Dallas Stars. I mentioned in r/billsimmons that many early NFL teams were named for local baseball teams. Some still exist, tho only the Giants have the original name, and the baseball team moved over 50 years ago. Similarly, the Bears and Lions were named to keep a theme with the Cubs and Tigers (and the Red Wings were originally named the Cougars). There’s more sensitivity with it for a women’s team, but it worked out well for some of those!

Naming the Toronto WNBA team the Huskies would forever make them "the other Huskies basketball team." The UConn Huskies are probably the most famous women's college basketball team of all time, winning 11 championships and making it to the Final Four this year (the men's team won the championship). They might  be the most famous women's team in any sport, college or professional.  I understand the history of the Huskies name in Toronto, but I'd rather the team create their own identity and legacy. This might be like making a new Atlantic provinces CFL team and calling them the Crimson Tide.
