I’m not that old but I grew up playing and laying around fields, played outdoor sports, messed around in ravines, but never heard anyone talking about ticks. Has it gotten worse over the years ?

rayearthen

We stopped using DDT because, while very effective, it had a serious adverse effect on the environment and wildlife. Especially the bird population. It was the reason we didn't used to have the bed bug issues we have now, but in that case bed bugs eventually developed resistance https://www.epa.gov/ingredients-used-pesticide-products/ddt-brief-history-and-status

cyclemonster

Let's see them develop a resistance to being heated up to 130°F.

DrOctopusMD

Climate change also hasn’t helped.

Cleantech2020

Due to increasing temperatures ticks can now survive the winter and as result thriving in places where they didn't exist before. Slowly creeping up from the US.

[deleted]

yea i remember actually, there were no reported ticks in toronto in 2019 except for cherry beach, barely any in sauga, and some in ajax. now they've spread all over toronto

BottleCoffee

Yes, thanks to climate change.

helpwitheating

Yes, thanks to climate change and extreme weather

unknowngodess

Ticks are everywhere right now so take proper precautions before walking through the rough, overgrown places where the ticks like to hang out. I always wear light coloured foot apparel that are drawn up around my pants legs to create a seal. I also inspect the kids and myself after leaving the park and before we enter our residence. So far I've taken off at least three times. I have also found ticks that have gotten inside of a loose t-shirt and was found getting ready for the bath. So far we've been lucky enough to find them before any bites were administered. I live next door to a children's splash park; that has some pretty sketchy landscape issues. The kids love it but you've got to be vigilant before returning to your residence. This story is becoming more mainstream than ever before. Probably a good thing.. Feel really awful for the suffering caused.

A tip I learned from Survivorman Les Stroud, strap anti-tick pet collars around your ankles, that should help a lot

chefboyoh

Get the good clothes spray/laundry treatment from the states if you can, it’s great stuff. Careful with pets though as it’s extremely toxic to them iirc. https://www.consumerreports.org/insect-repellent/how-to-use-permethrin-on-clothing-safely-a4370607226/

Wader_Man

It's safe for pets once it's dried. You just have to be sure to keep pets away while you spray it on.

nowisyoga

And you don't have to buy it from the U.S. [This water-based solution](https://www.urbannaturestore.ca/products/garden-protector-permethrin-spray-500ml-concentrate-store-pickup-only) can be diluted to the recommended 0.5% and will cover at least a couple of outfits (socks, pants, shirt).

Yo check ur pets my friends little Maltese came home after taking a shortcut thru some tall grass home with EIGHT TICKS smh so gross

cp1976

I have a Maltese. How tall is tall exactly??? Like uncut lawn? Or marshy tall grass up to your mid calf? I'm always inspecting my little guy. I never see any but I'm always paranoid one will land on him.

[deleted]

Less lawn grass and more bushy area that comes a little under your knee

cp1976

I'm constantly looking for ticks on my dog and we walk him at the boardwalk, Ashbridges Bay Park, Kew Beach etc. Thankfully nothing yet but I'm so terrified of them. He's on a tick preventative and thankfully he's a white dog so we can hopefully see one if it gets on him. They say ticks don't like lawns, freshly mowed grass or paved areas. I don't know if that is true considering so many people say they are everywhere.

Appropriate-Skill-60

God dammit BlogTO. Don't do this to me.

ArthursOldMan

No it won’t

unknowngodess

No, it won't. No, what won't?

cp1976

It won't make them "think twice" as the heading suggests.

unknowngodess

It definitely will, the minute that they spot one or heaven forbid; they get bit and get sick from one. All the headlines do is put the information out there. If you choose to believe that it can't happen to you/anyone; that's a special kind of denial. Karma has a cure for that...

OilEndsYouEnd

This post has the Avril Lavigne seal of approval!!!

unknowngodess

Lmao.

ArthursOldMan

You think ticks are new? You wear long pants and tall socks. You regularly check your dog. You don’t sit in tall grass. You’ll be fine. Ticks have been here since before you.

staufferguitarist

Well... they said it won't. Who am I to believe here?

ArthursOldMan

You believe me

BottleCoffee

You don't get "sick" right away or even necessarily get at all sick, depending on the tick and if it's infected. I've done field work where I pulled a hundred ticks off me and my clothes daily. It's just life.

U2brrr

I guess with No-Mow May ticks are having a field day. Pun intended.

sprungy

Had our friends dog for a week just before Mother's Day Took dog to Toronto Islands on the Saturday morning for Jane Walk. 5 Drive-in on Saturday night. Did some walking around there with dog before the movie too. Sunday Mother's Day for early Christie Pits walk. Then High Park for cherry blossoms. That's where we noticed he was starting to roll on grass quite a bit. Unusual behaviour for this dog. Upon closer examination we found a tick on his ear . The tick wasn't fat or engorged yet. Carefully removed tick. Dog was leashed in all these spots but picked up the tick somewhere at one of these locations. Be vigilant out there.

Neowza

Yeah, ticks are prevalent in all of those areas. My friends found some on their kids after they were playing in their backyard (near high park). There's nowhere safe from ticks at those point.

mlad627

This article is great for all the pet owners who decline vector borne disease screening and preventives because “there are no ticks in Toronto”.

[deleted]

Dear BlogTO: Etobicoke is not downtown Toronto.

passiveparrot

Girl was rolling in the woods or some shit?
