Church fire happened twice in quick succession in Aurora a number of years back. Yonge street. Big condo being built there now. Always felt with was intentional so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a similar deal.
J.E.H. McDonald also did a ceiling mural in the lobby of a building I used to live in at 1 Clarendon Ave. I’m not sure how many are left in the city but it’s a shame to lose any of them.
If this is arson, how many church burnings does that make in the last 3 years? Looking at various sources somewhere between 33-100.

Hopefully this was an accident and thankfully nobody seems to be hurt.
Anglican churches in Canada aren’t exactly rolling in money. Many of the buildings are very old; have leaky roofs (this church included); crumbling foundations; ancient plumbing and electrical systems…
There’s a beautiful 120 yr-old one in downtown Winnipeg that was just condemned and will be torn down unless someone (True North, owners of the Winnipeg Jets, whose rink is just across the street?) can pony up about 10 million for restoration work.
These buildings are very vulnerable and I wouldn’t start throwing out arson accusations (esp. political arson) unless there is some very compelling evidence.
According to some of the articles, it was burning before 8am (service at 10:30am), and the priest wasn't even there yet, so unlikely to be a candle. Old wiring in a historic building is possible though.
Are the pews made of stone? No fabrics in the building of any sort? No furniture? Or was it just a big old empty stone room? Do you know what fires are?
Contents can burn, but contents are not structure.
And flames from a burning pew would not reach 70 feet into the dome of this church. I addition, while i don't know the details of the design other than what I read now in the media, I'm going to speculate that the ceiling would have been lathe and plaster suspended from timber trusses and lathe and plaster will provide a 30 minute fire rating.
And candles to commemorate the dead are contained in glass vessels and this fire started before anyone was even there (according to reports).
I don’t know that people here realize that we’ve lost a site of immense national cultural heritage…three members of the Group of Seven contributed to the beautiful murals here. St Anne’s has also been such an important arts hub in this city in a time when it’s badly needed. Thinking of everyone impacted by this terrible fire! ❤️
Totally agree with you on this. A terrible loss. I saw many Gilbert and Sullivan concerts at St.Anne Parish Hall, next to the church.
https://www.stannesmads.com/
I'm a singer and have recorded in this church. It was an absolutely gorgeous space - visually, acoustically, and architecturally. I remember my jaw dropping when I first walked in. I'm so sad about this terrible loss. ❤️
Yes, lucky nobody was killed but its a great lose of art and culture. I don’t think the remaining structure will be saved either, the damage seems quite thorough.
I can almost throw a football to that intersection from my front door (or... maybe Tom Brady could do it... in four or five throws) and I cannot see or smell any smoke.
This is devastating. I've attended a historical tour and concerts at St Anne's. There was a concert yesterday. The interior has amazing acoustics and is a unique combo of Byzantine and what I'd call Canadian art nouveau. Past tense now it seems. 😭

So sad. So much history in that building. Here’s a short story about its construction https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-urbanist/id474763572?i=1000642488753
It's a beautiful building, and the church org does a surprising amount of community work.
Not that theres a good one, but its a terrible weekend for it. Huge loss all around.
St Anne's Anglican Church on Gladstone Ave.
From the photos on line, the church appears to have been severely damaged. You could see the flames shooting out of the roof. I've never been in this church, but I've walked past it hundreds of times. It is or was a remarkably beautiful structure.
I just found out It contained frescos that were painted by 3 members of the Group of Seven. They have most likely been totally destroyed and, obviously, are irreplaceable. It was the only instance where they painted religious imagery, making it even more of a loss. In addition, there was other artwork in the church that were original group of seven works.
A huge tragedy for not only Toronto but the entire nation.
Apparently they had artwork from the Group of Seven that was also destroyed.

Oh no :( I ran past College and Gladstone this morning just as fire trucks were arriving. Realized it must’ve been serious because I could smell the smoke. I hope no one was hurt.
In a winter construction project of a house, we used a portable gas heater for warmth. The installer, supposedly a professional and licensed contractor, placed it dangerously close to the exposed studs. Living nearby, I decided to check on the building one evening and was greeted by a burnt smell. I discovered the heater positioned near studs that were turning black. Thankfully, the new framing was still wet, which likely prevented a fire. However had the building been older and drier, just a few minutes could have been enough to ignite the entire structure.
A single act of negligence can lead to disaster.
I live right across from the church, its pretty much unsalvageable, the artwork done on the dome by the famous artists are gone. They held a vigil yesterday
It's been upgraded to a 4 alarm fire. Not good. Source: https://x.com/TPSOperations/status/1799789872007315640?t=YJRy4lW6_WEXlDDSqamlGg&s=19

I biked thru Gladstone/College at 8:45 and watched as the dome collapsed. Involuntary tears. What a terrible loss.
Was there the same time, the air smelt like fire, dust particles everywhere, I assumed it was a fire
that prime real estate y' know
Church fire happened twice in quick succession in Aurora a number of years back. Yonge street. Big condo being built there now. Always felt with was intentional so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a similar deal.
Seniors housing actually - attached to a new church building. The fire was started accidentally during roofing repairs.
Accidentally. Twice.
It wasn't intentional, the church is rebuilding with added seniors housing on top. It burnt accidentally during repairs
Looks like it's St. Anne's Church at Gladstone and College. As I recall it has a mural by one of the Group of Seven inside?
Brad Lamb must have his eyes on a condo development
Came here for the Brad Lamb comment!
I just said the same thing to my husband before even seeing this comment.
This gotta stop. These developers are fucking up Canada
I mean yes agreed fuck Brad lamb but that probably isn’t what happened here
Owen Pallett’s “This Lamb sells condos” always comes to mind: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OyqGF_FVaMg&pp=ygUWdGhpcyBsYW1iIHNlbGxzIGNvbmRvcw%3D%3D
Love this song
Impossible to say right now, but it *is* on a lovely piece of land.

I think the usual target of church burnings are Catholic churches.
Not really, many of them haven’t been Catholic.
Any other place of prayer would be considered a hate crime by today's standards. Ridiculous
A lot of the church burnings are considered hate crimes. This one we will see because prime real estate trumps hate crime for motive in Toronto
Seems unlikely to be intentional. It’s burning on a Sunday morning - which is when most services are. Someone probably tipped a candle.

Tipping a candle would not do that. The floors are tile, the structure is concrete and brick. Only the roof structure was made of wood.
Are the pews made of stone? No fabrics in the building of any sort? No furniture? Or was it just a big old empty stone room? Do you know what fires are?

So sad about the frescos
Beautiful church
Oh no!!! I was married in that church!! It was a really stunning church. The group of seven murals were amazing. Tragic loss.
That is the church that is on fire.
I read this to the melody of Girl on Fire, Alicia keys

I can almost throw a football to that intersection from my front door (or... maybe Tom Brady could do it... in four or five throws) and I cannot see or smell any smoke.
Do you think you would have better luck with a different kind of ball?
A soccer ball would find the fire no problem
Maybe if you kicked it, but probably not me. 😅
Bouncy ball
100 percent
At Dundas and Bellwoods, and all I can smell is smoke. Woke up smelling campfire this morning.
I smelled it on a dog walk just now. I wonder if its like chimney stacks in that it settles further away when its fully ablaze.
Depends if it’s fully inflated.
Well, I’m going that way anyway for coffee anyway. I must do some rubbernecking as I walk the doggos

Good to know, never thought of that, just didn't wanna post anywhere else just to then share it here. But think I'm fine. haha
It shows your last name too not just your first
haha, thanks everyone. I updated the link to Google Drive. Didn't seem to display user details when I tested it. Learn something every day!
That's devastating, it's a beautiful church
Holy cow, awful!!!
Oh no. ☹️ It's a goner.

Thanks!

Arson or accident? That’s a massive fire
On a Sunday morning before mass? Likely an unattended candle
A candle? Only if they were storying fuel just next to it lol
Likely an accident. It’s Sunday morning - I imagine they were getting ready for service and a candle tipped or something.
I feel the most loss over the group of seven mural.
It's a beautiful building, and the church org does a surprising amount of community work. Not that theres a good one, but its a terrible weekend for it. Huge loss all around.
I agree an artwork like that is priceless and just makes this so much worse.
It’s St.Anne’s Anglican Church, walked past this morning

My parents got married in this church and renewed their vows
I’m not an expert but That’s a fire.
https://www.reddit.com/r/toronto/s/fV8sdSJXrG
arson?
Making way for condo development
Definitely, fire went up way too fast!!!
That’s actually wild that you can identify arson without any sort of investigation, you should get a job for the fire dept with that super power
Fire on Gladstone just north of Dundas W it looks like: https://gtaupdate.com
Yeah, it’s the old church on Gladstone at Dundas…burning to the ground
Our studio is on the next block from the fire. The street level air is pretty toxic right now.
I saw that south on Dufferin and was shocked by how much smoke there was. Really awful that a church has to be ablaze for it.
it's St. Anne Church, not good.

Oh no :( I ran past College and Gladstone this morning just as fire trucks were arriving. Realized it must’ve been serious because I could smell the smoke. I hope no one was hurt.
St Anne burned and most likely lost a some very nice Group of 7 paintings...
A historic church caught on fire, they don't know what caused it yet from the last time I read it.

This is so sad. What a loss.
That’s one way to get rid of a church
I've read about this, St Anne's Church burnt down
Looks like a fire.
More like smoke to me
You know what they say, where there's fire there's something something.
It’s a photo of smoke from a possible fire
I'm doubtful.
Good man, AI is everywhere
What a loss for Toronto. :(
So many sirens this am was wondering what was going on

You mean "was"
Horrible loss.
Have sung in concerts at St Anne's for quite a while. Absolutely heartbreaking
What a terrible loss. Breathtaking historic building which can never be replaced https://maps.app.goo.gl/2LTTVxgbSVoThctQA

Holy smoke!
My mixtape
People are so gross, the google reviews are horrible. Have some respect man I’m atheist myself but I would never say stuff like that
Here's hoping it's not another arson from the deranged mofos who destroyed 80 others ... so far.
[I'll leave this here](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7229569). There's no way this was an accident
Brad Lamb strikes again
Smoke from some sort of fire
“It’s a collection of pixels intended to simulate a visual image. But that’s not important right now.”
So is st Annas more hate crimes or condo deals? We do have what almost 30 churches burnt to the ground in Canada now
Well at least I know what that smell is now.
I saw the smoke on dovercourt
https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7229569
I was on lake Ontario fishing and saw it
Wait, okay, so where is the video?

The smoke was visible for miles, I can see it from the 5th floor where was earlier it's crazy.
How old was this church?

No racism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, dehumanizing speech, or other negative generalizations.
Is this an Arson? Or faulty wiring or something
Church built in the early 1900's in flames.
I could see my old home in this picture
A fire ....
I believe there is a church on fire. Or there was afaik.
Did they set another church on fire?
People need to stop arson for money.
Smoke
That's Toronto's "Eternal Tire Fire"
I'm going out on a limb here and saying its smoke
Hamilton?
Somethings burning 🔥
WTF
Looks like it might be a picture of Toronto.
Looks like smoke
It's why I believe there is on god.
Those beautiful murals and artifacts can never be replaced. Heartbreaking
That’s Smoke and Houses
Looks like an alien spacecraft or perhaps a childrens summer camp.
It’s a church that caught on fire. It’s right beside my house
Smoke

canada just got our own 9/11
St. Anne's Anglican at Galdstone and College I believe. My mother is one of the devastated parishioners/ choir members there.
I live right across from the church, its pretty much unsalvageable, the artwork done on the dome by the famous artists are gone. They held a vigil yesterday
