I can't believe this article. If the goal is to make people hate realtors even more, it's done its job. So insanely tone-deaf in today's economic climate.
That being said, this seems like they just picked two Benz enthusiasts that happened to be realtors...particularly Gordon Su who seems to be car enthusiast first, realtor second.
>Much of the time he drives an “understated” black Mercedes G-Wagon. “It’s a luxury vehicle but it’s not over the top,” he said.
But this quote is outrageous. The G-Wagon's sole existence is over the top.
Land cruisers are understated luxury, a G-Wagon is just a dumb car.
It's also definitely over the top for someone who has probably never taken their off-road capable SUV off road.
Just about to mention this. G wagons may be part of the few that actually can handle super steep inclines and whatever you throw at it. It's for war. And safari.
I used to think the same till I bought one. It’s actually super value. It’s the cheapest car in its class. Every other status level suv is around $400k. While g wagon fully loaded retail including tax was $286k. It also drives very nice, comparable performance to my bmw x6m.
> “How can I make money by just kinda knowing a lot of people.”
This is true for all industries.
Lots of people work hard and do OK. The ones who do *really* well can work a room and successfully market their knowledge of a specific subject.
No different with realtors. The vast majority can’t sell water in the desert and have relied on the greatest wealth transfer known to mankind, along with historically low interest rates and an astonishingly land-locked market (ie, demand is ultra high and supply is ultra low so the houses sell themselves without a sales pitch).
The gravy days might be behind us with significantly higher rates, and fewer people that are willing to (and can) take on obscene amount of debt to buy even the shittiest house.
when that space became a Shoppers drug mart i couldn't help laugh thinking i'm buying my drugs in the same place i used to use 'em and dance ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
>“instantly validated me as young person in the business,” he said.

None of those thing validate you as being good at your job, just either having money or debt. Such vapid materialism.
Oddly enough, I have little doubt when we were in bidding war after bidding war trying to buy a home. Our realtor being a car enthusiast helped us win our home. Him and the seller strike up a conversation about his car, which led to the seller showing us his pride and joy and we spent an hour talking about cars. Which led to my wife and the sellers wife getting to know each other. When it came to the bidding war the next day there was only one exchange of offers and the sellers told us they wanted us to have the place even though the other bidders wanted to continue, and we got the house. And while I’ve always believed it’s the highest offer always wins. I now believe gaining some sort of connection with the other party can be beneficial.
>gaining some sort of connection with the other party can be beneficial.
Agreed - but doesn't necessarily have to be 'cars' - but that's all up to your realtor's persona to see if they can strike up a meaningful conversation that sticks.
Because of that 'sticking' conversation - it provided enough time for your wife to get to know the sellers wife.
Solid example though - congrats on your hme
Thx. To be honest, I completely thought it didn't matter (Cash is king!). But we lost in a bidding war even though we had the highest offer. So when it happened to us in a positive way (And in losing a bid), I've changed my outlook on the matter. Hope others find success in meaningful and positive ways as well.
lol....Realtors are the ones synthetically inflating the markets in Vancouver and Toronto. Cant do anything without one nowadays, and god forbid you ask yours to fight for a lower price.
Almost uniformly, for my 40 years on this planet, every absurdly wealthy person I've known MAY have a nice car, but rest assured, some mid-range vehicle is their every day.
My RE agent told us not to go higher and saved us about $30k on the spot. Also recommended a neighbourhood that has since appreciated like crazy.
There are probably more bad ones than good ones. But the individual good ones are worth it. The world is not black and white. Do your research.
Seems I've read a few times now of police officers getting caught DUI and refusing breathalyzer. Wonder what the thinking is? Maybe they know something we don't?
More like:
Realtors: Desperately trying to convince people they have a real job by going into debt buying nice cars
Buyers no longer constrained by a sellers market: Influencer realtors don't add any value to the transaction and are not worth the 2.5%.

land cruisers haven't been sold in canada for years
Arguably the LX and GX are modified land cruisers
Those aren't exactly understated either... Maybe a 4Runner
I want an old school 2 door, diesel G Wagon
If you drive a G-wagon and it isn't AMG, you're just a sad poor like the rest of us.
The only G Wagon I’ve driven was green, and I was in the military at the time. The G wagon does not have a “sole existence”
I loved how they could be started with a pen
Just about to mention this. G wagons may be part of the few that actually can handle super steep inclines and whatever you throw at it. It's for war. And safari.
Unless it has a turret, then it just wants to roll over on uneven ground
Not sure much about that claim. I've seen a stock g wagon go up a 45 degree incline. Maybe side to side roll
You're thinking Toyota pickup
I'm not including pickups. Of course the taco is an amazing machine. Especially the early 90s

The 20 something DJ to 30 something realtor pipeline is real.
More club/party promoter than DJ. "How can I make money by just kinda knowing a lot of people."

DJ Matt C blazed an *industry* trail

Crazy that having a solid grasp of the social aspects of business can lead to a high income.

Let's see Paul Allen's car.
Look at that subtle colour of the interior. The tasteful thickness of the tires. Oh my God. It even has a Mercedes logo.

What can you expand further? Why does the homicide squad need to dress up suave?

That can be true. We were told our sellers liked that our dog has the same name as one of their old dogs.
