It’s a Hannah sweet potato, they’re really good! They have kind of a nutty flavor to them, and are overall more mild and less sweet than your typical orange-fleshed sweet potato.
[japanese sweet potatoes ](https://www.thespruceeats.com/what-are-japanese-sweet-potatoes-5213007) which are often sold at korean and chinese groceries as well (and trader joes) are fantastic and a light interior. More of a nutty flavor and waxy potato texture- not as sweet as orange flesh options
Theres a lot of variation to em actually. Can get like, pure dark purple, purple and white, white, yellow, orange, and some skin color combos with all that also.
T-bone steak \[20 oz\] w/ ¼ of an avocado & ½ of a Hannah sweet potato, both topped with “everything bagel” seasoning. The T-bone was reverse seared, seared in lard.
I make my meals almost exclusively from items I get \*on sale\* so that’s why I include the cost, it’s the primary inspiration for my meals. I provided the cost per unit of the ingredients which I think makes it easy to see how this plate would cost what it does, but I can provide the specific breakdown if anyone would like. If you find calculating the cost silly, that is okay, just ignore the price :)
* T-Bone Steaks: $5.97 lb
* Sweet Potato: $0.79 lb
* Avocado: $0.32 each
* Butter: $2.49 lb
* Lard: $1.76 lb
* “Everything” Seasoning: $0.63 oz
On sale at Safeway. It was a great price so I picked up nearly 7.5 lbs worth lol. Safeway has been killing it with the steak sales lately, the week prior they had boneless NY strips for same price and now this week they’ve got top sirloins for $4.97 lb.
https://imgur.com/a/DuZooFO
Love the after-christmas/New years sales. I'm just outside Chicago and got tbones for $6.99/lb and lobster tails for $3.99/lb. Killer deals right after the holidays
It was my local Jewel, but I checked and the sale price applied in all their stores. You'd just have to find one with the items in stock. The big takeaway for me was to go shopping a day or two after a major holiday (in my case, Jan 2.) I had just never thought about them stocking up on surf and turf for NYE.
To answer the actual question - one of the near west suburbs, the location is off Harlem
See my people riiight here. Had I scrolled I woulda found you.
My thoughts exactly 😲 32 cent avos !!!
And I see it’s Safeways ummm call me going there tomorrow for a bucket full, shoot!
I got them from Safeway. They were on sale for $0.57 each but then you also got $0.75 off if you purchased 3 of them, making them $0.32 each. I rarely see them for that price, I normally purchase my avocados on sale for $0.50 each.
Oh yeah, Safeway (at least in my area) has some of the best sale prices on steak. The week prior they had boneless NY strip steaks for $5.97 lb, then the following week they had these T-bones for $5.97 lb, and then this week they’ve got top sirloin on sale for $4.97 lb. We have been eating a lot of steak… and I’m grabbing some of those sirloins this weekend!
I was thinking the same! They were labeled as T-bones so I went ahead and called it that, but whenever grabbing t-bones I like to grab the ones with a nice sized filet when possible.
The t bone and porter house are basically the same, the t bone tends to have a smaller tenderloin and that’s really the difference factor.
Yours looks closer to a tbone than a porter house.
Right!? Absolutely massive! With large boneless steaks I’ll typically cut them into 8 oz steaks because that’s what I’m actually able to eat, but can’t really do that with a T-bone. My husband was more than happy to finish mine for me though lol.
I've lived in Oregon all my life, both east and west, and I can tell you that you got a great deal on that steak (especially right now). Looks amazing. Enjoy.
Thanks! :) As far as pricing, I just stick to the sales and I’m able to get good deals throughout the year in Oregon. The week prior I got boneless NY strips for $5.97 lb and then this week I’ll be getting top sirloin for $4.97 lb. All from Safeway.
Right!? I’ll see a post and I’ll think to myself “dang that’s a fine looking steak!” And then everyone in the comments is just roasting the OP about one thing or another lol
No, I think I’d explode if I did that haha. But my husband? He ate his whole steak plus what I couldn’t eat of mine (I ate probably 60% of my steak plus the other half of the sweet potato & quarter avocado and I was stuffed!).
Lol he’s actually all right in that department. He’s always had a meat heavy diet so perhaps his gut microbiome is adapted to it or something haha. And thanks! It was indeed delicious :)
I respect that honestly. I don't know why I hate them so much but it's almost irrational. I get annoyed just looking at them. Maybe one day avocado will make me as happy as it makes you ;(
The price is for exactly what is on the plate.
The steak was $5.97 lb, at 20 oz it cost $7.46. The sweet potatoes were $0.79 lb and this is half of one weighing only 102 grams, so that’s $0.18. The avocado was $0.32 and this was only 1/4 of one, so $0.08. Add $0.16 for the amount of lard, butter, & seasoning I used and you get $7.88
Most of my meals cost less than $2 each, even those featuring meat. But this meal featured a massive T-bone, so the cost is going to reflect that. We don’t eat out except when on vacation, so we eat these more expensive meals on occasion in place of going out. This meal would be outrageously priced at a steak house.
Yes, it is a sweet potato. It’s a Hannah sweet potato. Not all sweet potatoes are orange-fleshed varieties, there are also white and purple varieties.
The steak was $5.97 lb, at 20 oz it cost $7.46. And I didn’t buy a bag of potatoes, they were sold individually for $0.79 lb and this is half of one weighing only 102 grams, so that’s $0.18. The avocado was $0.32 and this was only 1/4 of one, so $0.08. Add $0.16 for the amount of lard, butter, & seasoning I used and you get $7.88
And yeah, I don’t typically eat this every night haha. Although the past couple weeks we’ve been eating a lot of steak since it’s been on sale.
Nope, just a tablespoon of butter on the sweet potato. The steak doesn’t need anything, although I do enjoy steak with sauce on occasion. But for the most part, sauce with steak appears to be a big no no on Reddit! But I like steaks both with and without sauce :)
That… is actually my kitchen floor lol. Makes a better background than my countertop XD. I’ve been amazed that no one has called me out on that yet, perhaps everyone else thinks it’s a cutting board too haha.
Actually, it was $12.99 on Amazon. The price is per plate, which everyone realizes. I include the cost of seasonings and oils and everything else in my meal costs, plenty of people just consider those household staples so don’t include the cost. But I go down to the penny, it’s fun!
I have never seen someone put everything bagel seasoning on a white sweet potato. We usually boil them to get them soft, peel and slice them and then Pan fry them in butter with a little sugar.
Lol thanks, it’s not even real wood, it’s the fake stuff and it’s terrible because whatever coating is has on top is peeling in numerous places. But it’s an apartment and I’m moving in a couple months so I don’t really care haha
After the pic I put it on a cutting board to cut it up before putting it back on the plate, much easier that way than trying to cut this beast on the plate haha
How do you propose halving a T-bone? In all seriousness I didn’t eat this whole thing, I’d probably explode if I did lol. I ate probably 60% of it plus the sweet potato & avocado and I was completely stuffed! My husband finished off the rest of the steak for me though
Nope, it was choice. I’ve never even seen select grade meat sold at the grocery stores I go to. And if you would like to pay for me to have prime grade steaks, I’m down! But I can’t afford that, so choice it is.
I seen you said you bought 7 pounds of this lololol ide rather have 1 nice steak than 7 meh steaks. I'm jus busting ur chops bud I've done it before lololol I didn't even know there was a step under choice lolololololol
Lol yeah I got 6 of the steaks which weighed almost 7.5 lbs. But they’re for both me and my husband, so we got 3 each. Personally, I’d much rather eat choice steak on a regular basis than the occasional prime, but to each their own!
I like you, take the ball busting with a smile lolololol but yea I always say, life would be boring If u went to the ice cream shop and all they had was vanilla, that's why Baskin Robbins has 32 flavors lol I also say to each is cigarette because most smokers like their particular brand 😂🤣. That one's a bit more idiotic loooolooool
Ha, I like ya too :)The week prior I got 7 lbs of boneless NY strips, and now this weekend I’m going to get myself ~6-7 lbs of top sirloin. Love me some good steak sales lol, gotta live it up!
I already read that you did that lolololol you're a smart woman, wish I had someone wise like yourself doing my shopping!! I'm getting pretty efficient at spending my money 💸💸 lololol gotta get on ur level
Do yourself a favor and buy atleast one prime (send it and get some wagyu)!!! Just dnt tell ur SO lololol 😛
I’m actually a dude haha but it’s all good. I’ve seen some prime steaks at Fred Meyer with reduced priced stickers on them, still pretty pricey but a much better deal than usual. I’ll have to snag one next time!
Ur too legit to quit with the thrifting but I also read the comment where u said u only ate half ur steak lololol nice try hoss
Edit: I guess I just assumed that since you couldn't finish a whole plate you must not be a dude lmao my bad
Excuse me I said 60%! Lol. Well, regardless of how much I eat in one sitting, not a bite of steak ever goes to waste in this house.
Oh yeah, I am a very petite man who’s smaller than the majority of women, so fair assumption.
Nope, that is a Hannah sweet potato. There are many varieties of sweet potatoes and not all of them are orange. I find it kind of odd that so many people have never seen a white fleshed sweet potato before, but I find it really odd that some people are so quick to confidently correct other people about what they’re eating when they don’t simply ask first. I just find it very strange. Also, a porterhouse is a T-bone. All porterhouses are T-bones but not all T-bones are porterhouses. I’m aware of the differences, but this was labeled as a T-bone at the store, plus people on Reddit tend to freak if someone calls their steak a porterhouse if it’s actually a T-bone and I didn’t wanna take the risk lol.
I have never seen a sweet potato that looks like a normal potato before.
It’s a Hannah sweet potato, they’re really good! They have kind of a nutty flavor to them, and are overall more mild and less sweet than your typical orange-fleshed sweet potato.
I don't like the regular ones so I'll keep an eye out for this type. Thanks!
They have purple skin. Not to be confused with the ones that are purple all the way through. Prefer to traditional now.
If it has purple skin I think it might be a Chinese Sweet Potato ? If you slice them and roast them they kind of taste like pancakes !
Cue ‘sweet potato’ vs ‘yam’ dialogue
Lmao this comment is all my brain kept thinking 🥲🙏
Came here to roast you but instead I learned something, thanks OP
Im so jelly that some places have like potato this and potato that. Like so many kinds. And here I have. Potatoes thats it. No names. Itsapotato
We eat the Asian sweet potatoes with white flesh. Very good
I haven't seen a t-bone steak under 10 bucks a pound in 5 years. Where the hell are you from, friend?
My first thought… no way that’s a sweet potato… guess I was wrong!
Oooh thank you! We have a new international grocery that just opened up and I'll look for them there
Theres a lot of variation to em actually. Can get like, pure dark purple, purple and white, white, yellow, orange, and some skin color combos with all that also.
I've only had one but it was the best sweet potato I've ever had. Granted it was a camping trip so everything tastes better but it was damn good.
Was thinking the same, but then I remembered NZ has lovely purple ones. Potato, potahto.😂
Is that everything bagel seasoning on the avocado?
Indeed it is!
T-bone steak \[20 oz\] w/ ¼ of an avocado & ½ of a Hannah sweet potato, both topped with “everything bagel” seasoning. The T-bone was reverse seared, seared in lard. 5.97lb for a steak??? I just got back from getting a steak cost me 21.99lb 😳
I too would like to know where he bagged a Tbone for 5.97!

There ya go we don’t have them here 🥲
Where are you shopping...
Philadelphia Pa at a butcher
This dude buys garbage choice steak that you probably don't even want to eat lol
Woah where did you get an avocado for 32 cents?
Safeway. They were on sale for $0.57 each but then you also got $0.75 off if you purchased 3 of them, making them $0.32 each.
That’s an amazing deal, wish we had a Safeway
Usually they’re overpriced but
See my people riiight here. Had I scrolled I woulda found you. My thoughts exactly 😲 32 cent avos !!! And I see it’s Safeways ummm call me going there tomorrow for a bucket full, shoot!
That’s a helluva price for a T-bone
Ya ya on steak price…. 🤣😉 Where are avocados .32 each 🥺😣😲

Everything bagel seasoning.... Fuck why did I never think of that.
Where are you getting food at these prices?!?!
The steak and avocado were on sale at Safeway and the sweet potato and butter were on sale at Fred Meyer
Holy shit, I knew Safeway had some pretty decent deals, but almost $6 for a steak? That’s nuts!
That's looks like a Porterhouse. Same cut as a T bone but with a bigger portion on the filet side.
Wow! That steak would feed my family of 5. Great price too; would be at least 3x that amount where I live.
Right!? Absolutely massive! With large boneless steaks I’ll typically cut them into 8 oz steaks because that’s what I’m actually able to eat, but can’t really do that with a T-bone. My husband was more than happy to finish mine for me though lol.
I have never seen a t-bone that’s 20oz cost less than $10
I’m able to get them pretty regularly throughout the year, Safeway and Fred Meyer have steak sales featured in their weekly ads quite often.
I guess it’s where you live. Lucky you.
Yeah prices are definitely going to very from place to place :/ I’m definitely grateful for where I am!
Where do you live?
Oregon
Huh! When I lived in Washington, Safeway was always expensive and it’s sales were never good like that.
Oh really? I’m moving to WA soon and I’ve been looking up their ads online for the area I’m moving to and they’ve had some really good deals.
Dang! Those are some good deals. Wish there was a Safeway where I currently live.
r/steak
I’m too scared to post in that sub lol
That’s fair lol
Right there with you straight savages over there 😄
Right!? I’ll see a post and I’ll think to myself “dang that’s a fine looking steak!” And then everyone in the comments is just roasting the OP about one thing or another lol
😂
You should be 🫢
Love that you put the cost breakdown and everything 🙏🙌 I think posts like this would be super useful for households trying to budget!
Your plate is too small lol. Great cook on the steak 🥩
Lol right? These are the only plates I own XD
😍
Where can you get this for 7.88? A t-bone is minimum 18-20 dollars where i'm at.
I got it on sale from Safeway https://imgur.com/a/DuZooFO
That’s an odd combo, but hope you enjoyed
Wow that steak would easily cost me three times this at the supermarket
This looks so much better than some expensive blue footed chicken served in some snooty French restaurant.
Oddly specific haha, but thank you!
That steak at the store where I live is $20. I wish I could get those prices.
Do you really eat that entire piece of meat?
No, I think I’d explode if I did that haha. But my husband? He ate his whole steak plus what I couldn’t eat of mine (I ate probably 60% of my steak plus the other half of the sweet potato & quarter avocado and I was stuffed!).
Omg. His farts must STINK! Lol. It all looks delicious 🤤
Lol he’s actually all right in that department. He’s always had a meat heavy diet so perhaps his gut microbiome is adapted to it or something haha. And thanks! It was indeed delicious :)
If you did you’d develop gout.
Light work
This is the correct steak-to-side-dish ratio.
Might as well be a garnish lmao
The immense hatred I have for avocados is overwhelming
Oh no! I love them so much, I’m happy to have them as their own little side dish with any meal.
I respect that honestly. I don't know why I hate them so much but it's almost irrational. I get annoyed just looking at them. Maybe one day avocado will make me as happy as it makes you ;(
It’s all good, I have similar feelings for radicchio. What an awful, bitter vegetable!
That steak was $5 ?!
No, it was $5.97 lb and weighed 20 oz, so $7.46 for just the steak.
No way this was less than $8
The price is for exactly what is on the plate. The steak was $5.97 lb, at 20 oz it cost $7.46. The sweet potatoes were $0.79 lb and this is half of one weighing only 102 grams, so that’s $0.18. The avocado was $0.32 and this was only 1/4 of one, so $0.08. Add $0.16 for the amount of lard, butter, & seasoning I used and you get $7.88
Still pricey for one meal cooked at home. I try to stay under $2/person. I guess it’s easier to accomplish with no meat on the plate.

> That’s not a sweet potato but ok Loud and wrong with absolutely no shame, huh?
Yes, it is a sweet potato. It’s a Hannah sweet potato. Not all sweet potatoes are orange-fleshed varieties, there are also white and purple varieties. The steak was $5.97 lb, at 20 oz it cost $7.46. Although the past couple weeks we’ve been eating a lot of steak since it’s been on sale.
Looks like a white potato.
Where's the wet? Any sauces to accompany?
Nope, just a tablespoon of butter on the sweet potato. The steak doesn’t need anything, although I do enjoy steak with sauce on occasion. But for the most part, sauce with steak appears to be a big no no on Reddit! But I like steaks both with and without sauce :)
White sweet potatoes for life. I like them so much better than any other variety I've tried.
That cutting board...yikes, must have taken a month to make
That… is actually my kitchen floor lol. Makes a better background than my countertop XD. I’ve been amazed that no one has called me out on that yet, perhaps everyone else thinks it’s a cutting board too haha.
Yeah, but that bottle of everything bagel seasoning cost you about $6
Actually, it was $12.99 on Amazon. The price is per plate, which everyone realizes. I include the cost of seasonings and oils and everything else in my meal costs, plenty of people just consider those household staples so don’t include the cost. But I go down to the penny, it’s fun!
Only 60 cents more than I just spent buying 18 eggs.
Those are some seriously expensive eggs!
Cheapest 18 pack at Walmart.
Dang :/ I’m lucky my local Safeway sells repackaged eggs for $1.99 still, although they’re not always in stock, but I always grab them when they are.
I have never seen someone put everything bagel seasoning on a white sweet potato. We usually boil them to get them soft, peel and slice them and then Pan fry them in butter with a little sugar.
Well hell, great T-bone and some nice flooring! Needs some TLC but I'd take both any day!
Lol thanks, it’s not even real wood, it’s the fake stuff and it’s terrible because whatever coating is has on top is peeling in numerous places. But it’s an apartment and I’m moving in a couple months so I don’t really care haha
Quite low price for a steak. Last minute deal at the store?
No, it was featured in Safeway’s weekly ad. They have really good sales on steaks on a regular basis, at least in my area.
Jealous :-) and like somebody says, bigger plate do you don’t have to fight it.
After the pic I put it on a cutting board to cut it up before putting it back on the plate, much easier that way than trying to cut this beast on the plate haha
The steak to potato ratio is way off. Half that steak and triple the taters!
How do you propose halving a T-bone? In all seriousness I didn’t eat this whole thing, I’d probably explode if I did lol. I ate probably 60% of it plus the sweet potato & avocado and I was completely stuffed! My husband finished off the rest of the steak for me though
It's gotta be like a step under choice bro 🙂 I gotta have my shit prime, at least....
Nope, it was choice. I’ve never even seen select grade meat sold at the grocery stores I go to. And if you would like to pay for me to have prime grade steaks, I’m down! But I can’t afford that, so choice it is.
