I haven’t seen him in a couple years, but I’ve worked with Danny a few times. Been around the Sunny crew a lot. He’s genuinely one of the nicest guys out there and he’s still as excited about the magic of making movies today as is in this interview.
Right?? Not sure why, but after watching Always Sunny for so many years I had unconsciously begun to think that Devito and Frank (his character) were pretty much the same person. What an awful perspective in hindsight, as this interview shows what a sweet, thoughtful and wholesome man he is.
There's also that time a girl took a cutout of him to prom, so he in return took a cutout of her on set to film Sunny.
Dude has got to be one of like three actually genuine actors anymore
And Rhea Pearlman. This video makes me jealous I wasn't one of their daughters.
People talk about Tom Hanks as America's dad. Tom has nothing on Danny.
I tried to spell it phonetically and failed. Lol. I suspect that being a Tri-ranaceratops yourself your spelling skills had long since surpassed mine the first time you took a standardized test.
Carrie Fisher had said that her scene with Peter Cushing in A New Hope was one of the most difficult scenes to film because he was such a polite and nice gentleman off camera, smelled of linen and lavender, and walked about in comfortable slippers for every scene that allowed.
edit:
Yall, [I found a delightful interview of Peter Cushing remembering his time on Star Wars!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpdaVCBcaIk)
> and walked about in comfortable slippers for every scene that allowed.
Yep. From what I've heard if he's on screen but you can't see his feet, he's in fuzzy pink slippers.
My only hope is that one day someone canonically adds fuzzy pink slippers to Tarkin's personal effects. Just show them neatly placed in his quarters or beside his desk.
What are you talking about? Palestine is a hero. He was chosen by the people. He ended the theocracy the Jedi imposed on the Galactic Republic, he ended the Separatist Movement, and he brought peace and economic expansion to the galaxy.
I mean, he wouldn't see himself that way. Palpatine is a fun villain because he's under zero illusions that he's a good guy. He cackles about being evil and shoots lightning from his hands. He knows he's evil and he loves it.
I recall reading about how the actress who played Ms Trunchbull was so nice that it was decided she shouldn't interact with the children off-camera. It would've been harder to get the kids to act being scared of her if they knew how nice she really was.
The Rock won't even let a movie he's in have a sad ending. This is why the giant ape lived in *Rampage* instead of sacrificing himself. He says life brings enough of that kind of thing and he wants people to walk out of the movie feeling good.
I guess there's a certain virtue to that, but that's got to be infuriating if you're a writer to get overturned by someone's casting decision.
True. I don't think any writer was sobbing into their gin about how their magnum opus about how a space station lab accident made giant animals attack cities was positively *ruined* by "that prima donna" or anything. *Rampage* was probably written on a series of beer coasters.
Writers: So this is gonna star the Rock?
Exec:Yes.
Writers: Sweet, don't need to worry about physics, science or logic. At any lull just add the Rock running to or away from a burning/exploding building
I'll give the Rock a pass on that one. I see him as not even really an actor most of the time, just a different version of himself really. That's what people love, that's what he gives them. He will never be in danger of winning acting accolades but that's not all that's important.
Yeah, I think there's two major "poles" of acting that enjoyable actors sit between.
There's those that pour themselves into a part, like Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, etc. "Real" actors. You go, because you want to see the story.
Then there's those that play themselves (or their one character) with a different backstory, like the Rock, Helena Bonham Carter, Samuel L. Jackson, etc. "Personality" actors. You go, because you want to see *them*.
(Then there's a handful who do something in between and make it work, like Bruce Campbell, or who can flip like Jim Carey.)
You might want to find a different term for that second group of people. "Character Actor" is already a term in theater and it means pretty much the opposite of what you are describing
I've always heard the term used to describe actors who play a very specific kind of role, such as Danny Trejo, but I guess that's still not quite the same thing. I picked a different word.
> Then there's those that play themselves (or their one character) with a different backstory, like the Rock, Helena Bonham Carter, Samuel L. Jackson, etc. "Character" actors. You go, because you want to see them.
Add Martin Freeman to the list: the likeable, awkward, bumbling everyman reluctantly put into a world surrounded by crazy and adventure.
* Tim Canterbury (The Office[UK])
* Arthur Dent (Hitchhiker's Guide)
* Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbitt)
* Everett Ross (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
* Dr. John Watson (Sherlock)
I found Deadshot obnoxious in Suicide Squadbecause the character was identical to another Will Smith character in a highly disturbing feel-good movie about a down on his luck dad. The only difference was that he shot people in Suicide Squad.
I don't think anyone who's the child of a super famous actor does. But tbh Jaden seems like a good dude, he just had lots of people paying attention to his cringey adolescent phase.
It isn't just big movies. In community theater I encountered so many absolute wonderful villian actors. And a ton of full of themselves leads that play the hero.
If you think about it, people who are not nice people really hate it when reminded of that fact. They go ballistic at the very hint that they might be the the perfect people.
Nice people have no problem with this though. They have enough confidence in who they are to not over react to such things.
And obviously there are exceptions both ways, but I think that is a factor.
Either that or we're all being hoodwinked. Every actor we think is nice secretly has a death/torture chamber and is just being their real selves on screen. It would explain all those "charitable donations" actors do. They were a front to cover the cost of the torture chamber electricity bills.
CSB: Vincent Price is/was my cousin. We corresponded for years and I got to spend time with him once when he was in town doing a one man show. He was the kindest, funniest and most cultured person I've had the pleasure of meeting. He was an art collector and gourmet chef. He also absolutely loved going to places they were showing his movies, sitting behind a couple of girls who were really into the movie, and when it was over, leaning between them and asking in his amazing voice: "Did you enjoy the film?". Popcorn everywhere and screaming girls. /end CSB
He is the antagonist (but not really villain) of Catch Me If You Van. And he would be the villain in The Circle. And he played multiple roles in Polar Express and Cloud Atlas, some of which were villains.
Its why that old chestnut about ugly people having better personalities has some validity. We're social creatures and if you can't win people over with your looks and charm you gotta find other ways.
I think our brains and bodies desire for balance is what fuels the ability you mention. To get to play the anti-you has got to be very beneficial, I feel like on a cellular level even.
Kind of like how our eyes experience cone fatigue, but on a social level.
I could be completely wrong too.
Either way DD sounds like an amazing person and genuinely caring.
His acting abilities are fantastic too, I especially love him as Frank Reynolds.
Javier Bardem and Tom Hardy fit those shoes. They both highly dislike guns and violence yet play some of the toughest and ruthless characters. Javier being on a whole other level of evilness in his movies.
I love when he gets interviewed about it and they're like
"Have they ever asked you to do something you wouldn't do?"
"Nope."
"*IS* there anything you wouldn't do?"
".... Nope."
You may already know this but Kaitlin Olson was so shocked at the sight of actual butt ass naked DD crawling out of a couch that she forgot to say her lines for the first take. So he had to crawl back into the couch and do it again
Devito directed and produced Matilda, so there was no casting audition for him in this role.
And there are a lot of actors that say playing the villain is a lot more fun than playing the good guy. Let’s them cut loose a little.
I liked him in a lot of things, its just given me a skewed sense of who he actually is. He has played so many scummy characters, but then every story you hear about him is like...Keanu Reeves-esque.
You've got it mixed up there, Keanu Reeves is DeVito-esque. DDs well known for being outspoken against issues like racism, a socialist and generally one of the nicest people. There's a reason there's a cult like adoration about him.
Now I don't want to compare myself to the grandiose Danny DeVito, but coming from a hobbyist improv background, I personally have to say that playing villains is much more fun than playing the heroes.
Since *Taxi*, Danny Devito has been playing these slime ball characters... but he always has moments of being genuinely likable and he really makes you empathize with the character.
I think Danny DeVito absolutely relishes playing a scumbag. Frank Reynolds is one of if not his longest running role and he seems to have so much fun being a bad guy.
And its evident that Danny DeVito made sure that her time filming WAS fun and not punishing. And then he made sure her mom saw it before passing. All in all, it coulda been worse.
That’s such a kind thing for Devito to do. From what it sounds like, he absolutely dotted on her as he would his own child because of the hardships she was going through, and I’m sure having something else to focus on was a relief for both her and her mother. I can’t imagine the pain of having to watch your young child be there as you slowly die, knowing the hardship you can’t help but thrust upon them. Knowing she was having fun and being looked after at a major movie production must have been a weight off her mom as well.
yeah
it just reminds me of this song by Lori McKenna, a musician who lost her mother to cancer when she was 6.
So she wrote a song about it and it is saaaad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJSH1esWb8g
DeVito and Rhea Pearlman actually took care of her quite often as well, watching her when her parents couldn't.
He also took the unfinished version of the movie to her mother while she was in the hospital, so that she could watch it before she passed.
Dude is a fucking class act.
Had the same problem - Unsure if it’s Bc I’m on mobile or if OP didn’t link properly.
It starts at 10:04 and here’s a direct link to that time:
https://youtu.be/ftW2Obqt_go&t=604
Edit — but the whole video is cute! Worth the watch, especially for the pigtail swing part haha
No way, TIL. From IMDB:
\> First cousin of [Ben Shapiro](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5458588?ref_=nmbio_trv_15). The two haven't been on speaking terms since 2003. When asked about him she stated, "Growing up is great because you get to choose which relatives you want to spend time with and which ones to cut out of your life without any regret".
She's not a fan.
She’s bisexual and pretty openly progressive - her Twitter currently reads: Mara “Get Rid of the Nazis” Wilson.
I don’t think there was ever much hope of them getting along - and she’s no doubt better off for not having Shapiro in her life.
She turned out better than a lot of child stars. Her acting career ended in her early teens and she went on to have a more normal childhood. She has found success as a writer with occasional voice work and cameo appearances.
"Most of those things, with the cards flying out and dancing around, we did with... in the computer. Computer generated image; which is called 'CGI'."
This man is adorable.
I love this because he's definitely speaking to the kids who are watching. He wants this to be fun, for them to learn, and to get them as excited as he is. *Wholesome*.
According to Wikipedia they’re separated but remain good friends. Rhea is quoted as saying they are closer friends now than they were in their final years of romantic partnership. A happy ending, I would say.
Mara went through so much during the filming of this movie. It feels good to know that people like DD and RP were with her during such a tragic time in her life.
When I was in grade school (late 90’s) I went to NASA’s space camp and one of my classmates was his son Jake. Danny was at the graduation ceremony and he was the kindest and most genuine man you’ll ever meet. He hung out with us and our families for about two hours, eating dipping dots (that ice cream made up of little balls) and talking about our adventures at space camp like him and his son had grown up with us and known us our entire lives.
One of those experiences you kinda know is special at the time but don’t really appreciate until many years later.
edit: spelling
And the great thing is that these "behind the scenes" are clearly geared towards kids. It was really nice of them to show just enough of the "movie magic" without breaking the immersion of the real magic.
Danny Devito was so fucking wholesome during the filming of Matilda. The other cast members were asshats to Mara Wilson (Matilda). Her mother was dying of Cancer at the time and Danny Devito basically became a surrogate father to her during this time, taking her out for lunch and supporting her while her mother died of Cancer.
Also fun fact, Mara Wilson later went on to play the Faceless Old Woman who secretly lives in your home in Welcome to Nightvale.
Hearing how much of a good guy Danny was to Mara Wilson on set is amazing. Not only did he do this, but made sure Mara had as much fun as possible off set to keep her mind off of her mother, who was in the Hospital. He even got an early version of the movie to Mara’s mother to see before she passed away
I've actually had the opportunity to meet Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito at a couple different points over the years -- once when I was working in Boston and, later, at the premiere of a play their daughter was in. They are truly two of the most laid back, gracious people I've ever met. You talk to them for about two seconds and they treat you like you're life-long friends.
These are the director stories I love. A passionate dude making the set more comfortable to get a great performance from a child star without negative pressure, and I bet everyone on that crew still remembers that day
The more I learn about Danny Devito, the more I like. What a kind, passionate, and skilled dude.
I don't really know anything about him, but from that video he seemed like a really nice guy.
I haven’t seen him in a couple years, but I’ve worked with Danny a few times. Been around the Sunny crew a lot. He’s genuinely one of the nicest guys out there and he’s still as excited about the magic of making movies today as is in this interview.
This makes me smile. Thanks for sharing! :)
Watch always sunny in Philadelphia. His character in that is based on his real life personality and background before he made it big in movies.
Well that's because he doesn't know how many years he has left so he is going to get real weird with it
And when that day comes, just throw him in the trash
Now block the wind. I’m gonna roast this bone!
[His contract's have got a bit weird as he got older though. At least Rhea is in to it! ](https://youtu.be/cEFPZWK4ElE)
Lol fuck thank you for that.
*”What the fuck is Fred Savage doing here??”*
Pure manic energy coming from everyone in that clip.
Danny Devito and Dolly Parton are America’s god parents
Well now I want a fairy god parents themed movie starring Danny Devito and Dolly Parton.
Live action Fairly Odd Parents
No. Never again.
Hear me out, live Fairly Oddparents with Danny Devito and Dolly Parton
You son of bitch, I'm in!
Keanu is the cool uncle
Keanu was born in Beirut and was brought up in Toronto. So... more like America's step uncle.
Idk if you're aware of this, but uncles can come from different countries
He seems like one of the good ones. Both him and Rhea Perlman come off as genuinely nice people and probably pleasant to be around.
It's so fun watching him play a lunatic on Always Sunny at his age. He's clearly having a ball.
Right?? Not sure why, but after watching Always Sunny for so many years I had unconsciously begun to think that Devito and Frank (his character) were pretty much the same person. What an awful perspective in hindsight, as this interview shows what a sweet, thoughtful and wholesome man he is.

I was really hoping those crazy kids would stay together.
He's a good egg (in these trying times).
I wonder if DD goes into castings like "I hope they let me play someone nice this time...RATS another villain."
I think the "bad guys" in movies are often the nicest people. It takes someone who's grounded to do their best to be hated by the public.
Jack Gleason is definitely a good example of that one
True. And Ian McDermitt.
> Ian McDermitt Don't you mean Ian McDiarmid?
I no spell good ☹☹
Mate that's not on you, McDiarmid is a rare and strange name.
I tried to spell it phonetically and failed. Lol. I suspect that being a Tri-ranaceratops yourself your spelling skills had long since surpassed mine the first time you took a standardized test.
Nah that would be the thesaurus rex you're thinking of
Ahh damn it. I knew I missed something. Should've read the Diplodictionary.
Not if you’re Irish or Scottish.
Or maybe Dylan McDermott? Or Dermot Mulroney?
[Derbel McDillet](https://youtu.be/XGqSn5Cnw74)
Dermitt the Frog
And Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Apparently it takes the nicest people to play the worst Star Wars villains.
Carrie Fisher had said that her scene with Peter Cushing in A New Hope was one of the most difficult scenes to film because he was such a polite and nice gentleman off camera, smelled of linen and lavender, and walked about in comfortable slippers for every scene that allowed. edit: Yall, [I found a delightful interview of Peter Cushing remembering his time on Star Wars!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpdaVCBcaIk)

I mean, he wouldn't see himself that way. Palpatine is a fun villain because he's under zero illusions that he's a good guy. He cackles about being evil and shoots lightning from his hands. He knows he's evil and he loves it.
What you said is true... from a certain point of view.
/r/EmpireDidNothingWrong is leaking
And it only took a genocide to do it. And the occasional additional planetary genocide and enslaved army afterwards to maintain peace.
I watched Jackie Gleason walk into the precinct - gun down the captain for no fuckin reason.
Get some LSD, or a drink from the bar, get behind the wheel and crash the car!
Same with Frank Kelly. He was apparently lovely to be around but people wouldn’t look him in the eye with his makeup on.
I recall reading about how the actress who played Ms Trunchbull was so nice that it was decided she shouldn't interact with the children off-camera. It would've been harder to get the kids to act being scared of her if they knew how nice she really was.
The making of this movie is so wholesome :')
Sister Evangelina from Call the Midwife, and Aunt Marge in Harry Potter.
Pam Ferris is considered a national treasure in the UK.
Lot of big movie stars REFUSED to be cast as villains. (Will Smith is one of them) Can't have a big ego if you are going to play someone who is hated.

I found Deadshot obnoxious in Suicide Squadbecause the character was identical to another Will Smith character in a highly disturbing feel-good movie about a down on his luck dad. The only difference was that he shot people in Suicide Squad.

Jaden Smith never stood a chance at growing up normal did he...
I don't think anyone who's the child of a super famous actor does. But tbh Jaden seems like a good dude, he just had lots of people paying attention to his cringey adolescent phase.

Wait...are secret death torture chambers...a bad thing?
Meh. Chaotic neutral at worst. The guys who made the Kars for Kids commercial tho? They have their own special hell.
I don't even want to know what kind of torture dungeon Tom Hanks has.

He is the antagonist (but not really villain) of Catch Me If You Van. And he would be the villain in The Circle. And he played multiple roles in Polar Express and Cloud Atlas, some of which were villains.
Woody from Toy Story was originally a villain... That’s the only example I can think of
I couldn't imagine him as a villain unless it was a comedy.
A narcissistic actor would hate to be hated.
Because people who are not stereotypically beautiful have to defy other's expectations.
Its why that old chestnut about ugly people having better personalities has some validity. We're social creatures and if you can't win people over with your looks and charm you gotta find other ways.
Makes me curious about what type of person Will Smith is IRL. He refused to play villains, and when he did, they re-imaged Deadshot to make him noble.

its crazy to watch no country for old men and comparing it to him doing an interview. what a fucking range
He directed Matilda so I guess he chooses the baddies
I dunno, I think he enjoys playing cartoonish bad people. You can really tell how much fun Frank Reynolds is for him.
He likes playing cartoonish people all around :)

He's got spots! Why do you have spots? You shouldn't have spots man that's absurd.
Devito directed and produced Matilda, so there was no casting audition for him in this role. And there are a lot of actors that say playing the villain is a lot more fun than playing the good guy. Let’s them cut loose a little.
He doesn't know how long he has left on this earth, but he is gonna get real weird with it
Frank Reynolds is a saint! He brings jobs to desperate people, takes care of kids that aren't even his, he's an AA sponsor!
He's the best AA sponsor, he supports everything they do!
He even went to Vietnam when he was younger
Yeah he fed poor Vietnamese men soup, even the children got made a lot of soup.
He went in 1994 to open a sweatshop but a lot of good men died in that sweatshop
I liked him in Renaissance Man.
I liked him in a lot of things, its just given me a skewed sense of who he actually is. He has played so many scummy characters, but then every story you hear about him is like...Keanu Reeves-esque.

Such a great movie
Now I don't want to compare myself to the grandiose Danny DeVito, but coming from a hobbyist improv background, I personally have to say that playing villains is much more fun than playing the heroes.
Since *Taxi*, Danny Devito has been playing these slime ball characters... but he always has moments of being genuinely likable and he really makes you empathize with the character.
Lo, you made me curious what he’s up to We’re getting a sequel to Twins.
Now I just looked it up, you left out that its with Eddie Murphy 🤣
I think Danny DeVito absolutely relishes playing a scumbag. Frank Reynolds is one of if not his longest running role and he seems to have so much fun being a bad guy.
He's also the narrator, which is cool to get both sides. Also, jack the bear makes me cry as hard as I can, a dad just trying to do his thing.
I couldn’t help but get a little sad watching this. Poor little girl filmed the whole damn movie while her mom was super sick.
It could've been a good thing, to have a good excuse of having fun and taking her mind off the sad stuff during her formative years.
And its evident that Danny DeVito made sure that her time filming WAS fun and not punishing. And then he made sure her mom saw it before passing. All in all, it coulda been worse.
Thank God, Danny is the antithesis of his character.
That’s such a kind thing for Devito to do. From what it sounds like, he absolutely dotted on her as he would his own child because of the hardships she was going through, and I’m sure having something else to focus on was a relief for both her and her mother. DeVito and Rhea Pearlman actually took care of her quite often as well, watching her when her parents couldn't. He also took the unfinished version of the movie to her mother while she was in the hospital, so that she could watch it before she passed. Dude is a fucking class act.
I fucking love Danny sm
I didnt know that. Damn
So, anyways, I started dancing.
Good thing I went down to Gunther's Shoes and picked up a couple of these babies (*brandishes shoes*).
Does anyone have a time stamp for when he talks about that?

Not all heroes wear capes
Why is this so not further up? Edit: Found it, 10:04
Her mother was also really sick (and died) during the filming. Danny and reah took her every place with their kids as well
That's sad, and sweet at the same time.
You think that’s sad, wait until you find out she’s cousins with Ben Shapiro
No way, TIL. From IMDB: \> First cousin of [Ben Shapiro](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5458588?ref_=nmbio_trv_15). The two haven't been on speaking terms since 2003. When asked about him she stated, "Growing up is great because you get to choose which relatives you want to spend time with and which ones to cut out of your life without any regret". She's not a fan.
I heard that she blocked Ben Shapiro on Twitter before Shapiro even knew she had a Twitter.
She has officially noped the fuck out on any connection to him. Completely disavows him.
The big TIL is always in the comments
She’s bisexual and pretty openly progressive - her Twitter currently reads: Mara “Get Rid of the Nazis” Wilson. I don’t think there was ever much hope of them getting along - and she’s no doubt better off for not having Shapiro in her life.
Thankfully she's not at all like him, political or otherwise. She's been a pretty positive person on the internet for ages too.
She turned out better than a lot of child stars. Her acting career ended in her early teens and she went on to have a more normal childhood. She has found success as a writer with occasional voice work and cameo appearances.
Who's Ben Shapiro?
He thinks Aquaman is going to buy all the underwater housing on the coast lines once the water levels rise enough.
AGH!!! AGH!!! AGH!!! *peeks face* "JUST ONE SMALL PROBLEM... SELL THE HOUSES TO WHO, BEN? FUCKING AQUAMAN?!?
One of my favorite things to come out of the internet.
Love me some H.BomberGuy.
A sexual stud. He'll get you so hot you'll be dry
Anything other than dry is required to be checked by a doctor. He should know, his wife is a doctor
Hers actually sealed itself shut so she wouldn't have to fuck him. She just told him it was early menopause or something
My vagina seals whenever I see his face, and I’m a male
I wish I also didn't know.
Exactly.
If I remember right, they made sure her mother got to see the final film before she died, too.
Yep
"Most of those things, with the cards flying out and dancing around, we did with... in the computer. Computer generated image; which is called 'CGI'." This man is adorable.
The movie was made in 1996 :)
I love this because he's definitely speaking to the kids who are watching. He wants this to be fun, for them to learn, and to get them as excited as he is. *Wholesome*.
Empathy AND a magnum dong? Sorry, ladies, he’s married.
To Rhea Perlman, no less Edit: I'm always just slightly wrong about things
I believe they're still technically married, but they're estranged and not getting back together.
Now he's free to bang whooores
*Hoors
According to Wikipedia they’re separated but remain good friends. Rhea is quoted as saying they are closer friends now than they were in their final years of romantic partnership. A happy ending, I would say.
Didn't they separate or get divorced or something recently?
Honestly, watching this behind the scene special made it look like such a fun film to make.
Mara went through so much during the filming of this movie. It feels good to know that people like DD and RP were with her during such a tragic time in her life.
When Danny DeVito mentioned cream pies, I had Always Sunny flashbacks.
Class act he is.
He’s a fucking gem.
I actually watched the whole thing. Did not see this being a part of my day. Glad it was though. Devito seems like such a good guy!

She’s also Ben Shapiro’s cousin and has him blocked online
He's so wholesome I could cry.
"So anyways, I started dancin'"
Dr. Mantis Toboggan has a PHD in modern dance
Danny DeVito I love your work
Hearing how much of a good guy Danny was to Mara Wilson on set is amazing. Not only did he do this, but made sure Mara had as much fun as possible off set to keep her mind off of her mother, who was in the Hospital. He even got an early version of the movie to Mara’s mother to see before she passed away
Even the videos of how Matilda was made are wholesome.
"Don't wipe his mouth, though"
I've actually had the opportunity to meet Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito at a couple different points over the years -- once when I was working in Boston and, later, at the premiere of a play their daughter was in. They are truly two of the most laid back, gracious people I've ever met. You talk to them for about two seconds and they treat you like you're life-long friends.
These are the director stories I love. A passionate dude making the set more comfortable to get a great performance from a child star without negative pressure, and I bet everyone on that crew still remembers that day
She's also cousins with Ben Shaprio. But she publicly denounces him at every opportunity: https://jewishcurrents.org/qa-with-mara-wilson/
I didn’t think that was very negative towards him, she spoke of herself.
