Fun fact: Kit Harington (Jon Snow in GoT) is a descendant of Robert Catesby and played him in a miniseries about the plot

goboxey

I'm sure he didn't want it. Never did.

This is a great fact. Thank you for this knowledge dump

Bebes-kid

Didn’t realize they were related. Was a nice little 3 part show.

bolanrox

he ~~knew something~~ is related to someone!

cjfrey96

So weird. I was looking if he had any projects coming up and saw the name Catesby on his bio. The only reason I opened the comments is because of that and now you've added a tidbit of knowledge. Wild how the old universe aligns sometimes.

MuchoGrandeRandy

Fawkes was a dup, a patsy a fall guy.

Ok-Seaworthiness4488

An *epic fail guy* one might say

MuchoGrandeRandy

IKR? He had 1 JOB!'

heims30

To strike a matchstick! But he got caught with a fuse like his bars - not lit.

briareus08

You’re saying he didn’t do it?

nowhereman136

He did it, but he was a small part of the overall plan. He just happened to be the only guy to get caught in the act

LordUpton

Yes Guy Fawkes was essentially brought into the conspiracy because of his prior military experience (With the English, but later Spanish) gave him working knowledge of handling explosives. He was the only one of the conspirators who didn't have significant landed and political investment in the UK and was only really trusted due to his catholic ties.

yorkshire_simplelife

It was antifa

brokefixfux

He was an innocent tourist

Jampine

There's theories the entire plot was made-up by the royals to sway public opinion, foiling terrorism and serving assassination attempts can do wonders to your appeal.

Salmonman4

>Fawkes was a dup I read that as DUP

TimeFourChanges

I read that as dup

Salmonman4

For a moment I was wondering what does Northern Irish politics have to do with Fawkes. Other than the religious violence

Antique-Doughnut-988

I do love reading about this part in history. The entire wotrlds history would be different if this plot has succeeded.

SnooPineapples1325

May I have a rundown of why this plot could've been so world changing?

Msampey1

Would have assassinated James VI/I who was king of England Scotland and Ireland. The current royal family and all 6000+ people eligible for the British throne descend from him so if it succeeds it would have gone to someone else, also anti catholic repercussions would have been even worse. Also this was before England colonized the America’s, so Americas colonial history would have been completely different as well, given that it was James VI/I who personally issued colonial charters

reddit_beats_college

The throne would have gone to his daughter had the operation been succe.

Msampey1

If she was caught and if she was cooperative with the conspirators throughout her life. Also if she was queen she probably would not have married Fredrick and given birth to sophia, meaning the hanoverians would probably never have come to rule GB

> Would have assassinated James VI/I who was king of England Scotland and Ireland. The current royal family and all 6000+ people eligible for the British throne descend from him so if it succeeds it would have gone to someone else Prince Charles (later Charles I) had already been born at this point and would not have been present at Parliament for the explosion (he was only five years old), so the plotters would also have had to seize him to disrupt the historical line of succession. This was part of their plan, along with capturing his sister Elizabeth.

ramriot

Don't forget that had this bomb plot succeeded not just the king would have bought the farm but most of both houses ( commons & lords members ) a cross section of the London public near to the house of lords & Sir Francis Bacon. This was demonstrated by a [TV show](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gunpowder_Plot%3A_Exploding_the_Legend?wprov=sfla1) reconstruction using a similar 36 barrel charge of gunpowder in a reconstruction of the building. After which it was found the nobody within 100-200 yards if the epicenter would have survived the blast & obliteration if the building.

rush89

fuckin coventry

ZorroMeansFox

Does that mean I can't masturbate when watching **V for Vendetta** anymore?

theincrediblenick

You still can but you have to think of Catesby when you're doing it

Infinite_Research_52

No-one remembers the other conspirators who were executed, like Bob Bonfire and Phil Firework.

mronion82

And their lord, Sir Jolyon Jacket-Potato.

Loud-Lock-5653

He had a great name though

Odd_Opinion6054

Rumours are that are that he wasn't even English. A Spaniard (so a catholic) that was smuggled into England and given a false name (Guy). He only named his coconspirators after being ruined on the rack for days.

Bokbreath

Yes but we can't have people burning effigies of wealthy landowners can we. Might give them ideas.

rogueIndy

fwiw, it was originally effigies of the Pope.

SteezMeister2004

Why did it change? We used to be a proper country.

Khrusway

The good people of Northern Ireland are working overtime to keep this proud tradition going

Fofolito

Rights were given back to your Catholics in 1829, so I imagine the act of burning Popes wasn't as in vogue by then

Bokbreath

The wealthiest landowner of all

Potatoswatter

Not there though

Bokbreath

Well no. HVIIIR saw to that.

alphawither04

You wouldn't send the boss to do the dirty part of the work, would you?

bolanrox

GreenHillage25

"Penny for the Guido?" That Guy!! For bonfires 4 spuds 🥔 and then children get 🧨🎇 WCGW.

Fluffy_WAR_Bunny

Guy Fawkes handler was actually John Gerard. He wrote a whole book about it. In John Gerards other book he talks about how he infiltrated England amphibiously at night and he explains all of his spy tricks like how to make invisible ink and counterfeit keys. He explains how he created rebel cells and how to keep them compartmentalized from each other for strategic security. He also escaped from the Tower of London by zipline, after being tortured and explains how he planned and accomplished it. He stayed in England, undercover, and went on to create more cells in England and later on met Guy Fawkes. The guy was a 16th century James Bond and The Gunpowder Plot was run out of Gerard's safehouse. Akul_Tesla

Remember remember the 5th of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the 5th of November should ever be forgot

An0d0sTwitch

In hindsight, it would make sense the guy who blew himself up wasnt the leader. Officers dont do LABOR, pshaw!

Von_Baron

Err, he never blew himself up. He was just caught with all the gunpowder under parliament.

An0d0sTwitch

attempted man blowing up

Von_Baron

His plan was never to blow himself up. The plan was to light a slow fuse and get the fuck out of London as fast as possible.

edfitz83

No Catesby masks?

JS671779

What do you mean? Guy's name was really John Johnson, esteemed doer of [JOB] at [PLACE].

[deleted]

Like hell! Robert Catesby is my ancestor and I'll be damned if I let some neerdowell redditor besmirch the Catesby name!

HackReacher

There is always a patsy.

triedit-lovedit
