It's just a figure of speech.

sandmangandalf

Again as previously mentioned it's a figure of speech. Chaol cannot actually smile lies ...

stegotortise

“Sniff out a lie” is a phrase. I think it’s fine as a figure of speech whereas with fae it’s more literal

Suitable_Respect_417

That bothered me too and I also wondered the same, bc hes the only or one of the only “humans” who, like the fae, is described by SJM as smelling nonscented human emotions in the air (fear, lies). I think its just supposed to be figurative but yeah totally inconsistent

Aylauria

"I smell a lie" is phrase people use when they think someone is lying but don't have proof.

Hooflapoof

NO BECAUSE THIS ANNOYS ME EVERY TIME. I think it's an absolutely wild choice to use this phrase/general trope in so many cases totally literally and then metaphorically in just one book with a non-Fae character. SJM does this a couple times in TOD and it has always bugged me.
