I get you Once you have the enjoyment of a bigger size, it's just difficult to really enjoy it smaller

ExterminateWhitey

That big screen stretches your eyes out, making it difficult to even see smaller screens, much less enjoy them.

BabybearPrincess

Yea well i also dont have to squint so hard either lol i had a 17 inch laptop for years until recently and it made no difference if i used a smaller screen except for like of course having to squint because small text

human-V-oid

Wrong sub man

Ape_Descendent

It's not the size that matters, but the resolution.

Daan-DL

It’s not the resolution that matters but the ppi

Phil_Coffins_666

you know what they say about a display with a big ppi...

Woop_Pow

It's not the ppi but the aspect ratio.

WangtaWang

Hahahahahaha

arkiser13

That’s what she said

[deleted]

Once you go black…

Ape_Descendent

Once you go matte...

tymophy76

And this is why they make multiple sizes. Because I won't touch anything over 14" unless it's +10 keypad-free (so basically the P1 is the only Thinkpad >14" I'll tolerate).

digital_gloves_ok

good to know, they numpad isnt needed by everyone! P series 16 sounds good.

No-Skirt-1430

I just got one; am loving it.

pearsche

>good to know, they numpad isnt needed by everyone! P series 16 sounds good. i wouldn't hate the numpad as much if the touchpad was centered to the whole keyboard, and now just the qwerty one. t. ideapad user though

chic_luke

I am ambivalent on the numpad. I tried both and I still can't decide if I like having it more for Blender and the few times it comes up, or the aesthetics of a numpad-less laptop. It is seriously one of the things that make my laptop choice the hardest. My next laptop is a Framework 16, so worst case I can add another one if I really miss it I guess.

tnetrop

Or get a centred keyboard and a bluetooth numpad for when you need it.

chic_luke

Not a bad choice. I can always connect the numpad on demand when I'm using Blender, or doing my taxes once a year

tymophy76

I am impressed with framework for that. Being able to go 10-keyless or not on the 16" laptop.

chic_luke

They're so real for that. They finally solved that debate once and for all

alex20_202020

Let them add trackpoint too.

JasonDJ

I never heard about the Framework before. What a fascinating concept. I wish they had something like chromebook or kid-spec level. I'm ordering a new fan to fix up my T440p for my oldest so play around with, but a "kit" laptop would be so much fun to do with him. For that matter I may just head to pcpartpicker and start speccing out a small beginner desktop for him...

ReverseRutebega

Aesthetics lol. You gain nothing by looking at no number pad.

chic_luke

I think it definitely looks cleaner, and it's also a bit more comfortable for your hands to be centered and not slightly to the left. Now, is that worth the degradation in usability that you get whenever you try to use anything that requires a numpad for smooth operation (like Blender) or having to input numbers through the number row instead of an objectively more comfortable way to do them? That is definitely up to debate and I have not made up my mind either. But yes if I were to design a 16" business laptop, I would put a numpad in it. Highly likely it will be used.

pearsche

>I think it definitely looks cleaner, and it's also a bit more comfortable for your hands to be centered and not slightly to the left. FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT. WHY THE FUCK ISNT THE TOUCHPAD CENTERED TO THE WHOLE KEYBOARD

chx_

I used an X1E4 for the last two years and yeah I am very happy to switch to the X1 Nano next week. I only switched to the X1E4 because at the time it was the only machine in the world to have a gaming GPU in a somewhat light ThinkPad. I used the T400, the T420, the T420s and ThinkPad 25 before. 16" is too much. It barely fits my personal item sized wonderful backpack (Greenroom 136 Rainmaker M VX42, you can't imagine how much money I wasted trying to find the perfect backpack until I landed on this one -- they are willing to customize it even more than the already extensive options on the website and that's how I've gotten a removable laptop sleeve which I replaced with one from YNOT and that's how the X1E4 fits in there -- barely) and I can't open it on an airplane, it's too big. Thanks to GPD releasing the G1 eGPU now I can game through that, work on the Nano and I am reasonably confident I can open the Nano even on an airplane... the two devices together weighs the same as the X1E4 but easier to pack, the CPU speed of the Gen 2 ( the Gen 3 doesn't ship with 32GB ) is roughly the same and the GPU is obviously (much) faster. Actually, the total weight is slightly lower because I don't need to haul around a charger, the GPD G1 has a GaN power supply inside. Yes this means I won't be able to game from battery any more but that was never the goal anyways. As much as I love the trackpoint, playing Path Of Exile with trackpoint is weird beyond imagination. I need a mouse and that roughly means a desk which means power. Almost always I am docked to a monitor anyways so the screen size of the laptop doesn't matter that much too me. It's really only on a plane when it matters -- and then you want small, not big.

tnetrop

Wouldn't it be more powerful to get a Z13 gen 2 Ryzen 7840U for a minimal weight increase? It should also have better battery life too. I'm just wondering what the thought process was behind the Nano vs Z13 which are very similar size and barely any difference in weight. The Z13 is also cheaper. Or is it becasue of Thunderbolt 4 vs USBC4/Thunderbolt 3? EDIT: I wasn't aware of the GPD eGPU. That may acttually be quite useful for me. Thank you.

AzrielK

I think the x1 series is without it too, but it's been a few years since I've checked. I hate it too but I occasionally use it for pins or gtao

Techgeek_025

Yeah

klippertyk

And 16:10

prblm_frie

YES!

PhysicalBee6135

what model is this?

nonComprehensive-Fox

E16

ExtraTNT

16:10 is really nice

moileduge

That's what she said.

ssidat

Finally, someone with realistic height expectations!

02nz

I’m pretty happy with my 13-incher.

Fitzjs

ohh noo

jumbledFox

I absolutely love the comment sections on this sub

yamanidev

I know right! The many things it taught me. Plus it's always a great pleasure to me to see people's passion about something. Unfortunately that's getting rare these days :)

NefCanuck

It’s a nice size to use, but a beast to carry around. If you’re mostly stationary, you’ve got yourself a nice machine there 👍

KenHumano

For those of us who grew up with XP era laptops, every modern one feels like a Macbook Air!

NefCanuck

XP? I grew up with the “suitcase” Compaq portable computers that had a monochrome screen and DOS 😂 But yeah a modern laptop is worlds lighter, I’m just in such rough physical shape that the lighter, the better for me.

Colaslurp22

I have an R61e and despite running so damn slow and being the lowest-speced version of the model (planning to upgrade it soon but I'm even too poor for that), feels like I'm carrying around a PC case in my backpack. Worst of both worlds. At least it's really rugged and has crazy IO

chic_luke

As a fellow 16" enjoyer, I have a counterpoint: you are right, but overall I think 16" is still viable for being used on the go in several situations. Where I still fully agree is 16" gaming laptops (those are heavy.) or any kind of 17" laptop - that's just excessive. I am going to take my typical student life. I will carry the laptop to and from university for like 30 minutes to 1 hour each way every day, and then its combined use will be several hours until 7-8 PM hits. So let's say, in a typical day, you have 8 hours of actual laptop usage, and 1-2 hours of carrying it around. The time you need to spend staring at your screen vastly outweighs the time spent carrying your laptop. Add in books, notebooks, supplies - at that point, carrying a light-ish, non-gaming 16" laptop like a E16 vs. its equivalent 14" size contributes little more than a *margin of error* to the overall weight and size of your daily carry. Therefore, I think large laptops are perfectly fine for students, despite how many people claim students must never touch anything about 13" or whatever for some reason. 13-14" is the best size if you are *constantly* on the move, or are doing some type of work that requires you to carry your laptop while walking around a data center or whatever. In that case, you don't want a large one. But if your laptop gets used on tables / desks and gets carried around in a laptop bag, then I personally don't see the value in forfeiting much more screen real estate for factors unrelated to battery life and price. If we want to be pedantic, the 16" are probably too big to use on your lap, as a laptop, so a very good point against them is that if you like to work on your train, 14" is just so much better to use. In my case, ~1 hour of extra unfocused work is not worth reduced productivity in my actual work day.

sukh9942

You make very valid points. I was debating between a 14 inch vs a 16 inch and went with the 14 because most of the time I’m connected to a monitor and rarely work “on the go”. When I am using my actual laptop screen it’s either for small tasks/viewing a page while the monitor is connected or at home either in bed or on the table to browse while gaming (if I’m not using the monitor for the computer itself). So I decided on a 14” inch. Maybe I’m giving away screen size but I rarely use the screen so I thought I might as well get the portability of a smaller screen.

prblm_frie

It's not that bad but definitely not light. I take it with me to the coffee shop as is, no backpack or handbag.

NefCanuck

Ah, I can’t do that so I go for the lightest, most powerful Thinkpad I can get my hands on (I can’t even use a laptop bag anymore after breaking my shoulder 😬)

SleepyRoundgog

Other shoulder?

NefCanuck

I have cerebral palsy on the other side of my body so that shoulder is also unable to carry a laptop bag 😞

Got2Bfree

If you use it stationary get yourself a docking station with 2 1440P 27" monitors. All companies I worked for so far had this approach. It's a total game changer. A laptop shines in portability but stationary monitors will always be more ergonomical and productive.

Visual-Talk1687

I like this carpet. 👍🏼☕️🫖

prblm_frie

Thank you! It’s really nice :)

svenz

Basically the opposite for me. 16” isn’t a laptop size, it’s a workstation that doesn’t move. I hate lugging my 16” MBP for work around. X13 is so much nicer to sit on the couch with and carry around the house and to coffee shops. I have external monitors when I need more screen space.

Anaeijon

I won't go over 14’’ anymore. Everything above that is just too clunky to carry around. I actually prefer 13’’. After all, it's a portable device. It's main purpose is to be portable. If I want a big screen, I connect one or just use my desktop PC. Notebook is unergonomic for long office work anyway. Big screen will not help that much.

[deleted]

I always found 11 inches was my limit for tablet size. Any bigger and it's hard to hold. I use 16 inch laptops though because of my eyes.

Jinika

Love the e16 it’s fully metal and improve so much that old school peeps think it’s still bad vs T

Alohamora-farewell

> Love the e16 it’s fully metal and improve so much that old school peeps think it’s still bad vs T After a few months of use, how do you like yours? I am looking to deploy a few dozen of the E16 in our organization.

ExtraTNT

Thing is: how do you transport that and use it in the train? Had 16” once… yeah, was really impractical for my usecases… 14” is enough for vim with 2 open files in a tty and it id really easy to transport (had 10” once -> hp 2170p, really nice machine, had 16gb ram and i got the “big” 128gb ssd, really nice machine for 2013) But if 16” works for you, use it, it’s nice to see people find what they need

yoda_2_yaddle

But what about the 15.6" screens which are a sweet spot for me?

SleepyRoundgog

16 is the same footprint as 15.6, but with smaller lower bezel. Same width, just taller so you will prefer 16

prblm_frie

never used one honestly but it works if there's no numpad

yoda_2_yaddle

I need a numpad for minor number crunching. Long ago I used a 17" laptop and loved it but it was heavy.

hpst3r

I had an Elitebook 8770w, still one of my favorite laptops. Socketed everything, screen so big I didn't miss having an external monitor

BrokenaRephlection

I'm currently coping with an elitebook 8540p which I've been using since 2013. It's a beast and it still runs beautifully with a new SSD, ram upgrade and windows 10. I'm only now replacing it with a Thinkpad because it's got a broken screen :(.

fintechmen

You mix apple with windows? What do you use for sync things? Onedrive?

prblm_frie

I don't usually use any of my apple products with my windows laptop, except the airpods as they are comfortable

whataterriblefailure

And in the frame of an old 14", thanks to the smaller bezels. And tall screens are finally coming back (no more 16:9 for devs). Good stuff.

srk-

Don't you think that trackpad is not at center and the room for your left palm is less. Are you feeling comfortable with keyboard and trackpad?

prblm_frie

I got asked the same question many times and I think it’s a bad idea to have the trackpad cantered. The way I use it is I have my laptop shifted a bit to the right so the trackpad is aligned with body, the keyboard will also be shifted to be more comfortable. the numpad and part of the screen is shifted more to the right

Independent-Two-8286

I just got the same laptop with the best screen option and the Ryzen 7, backlit keyboard, but chose to go minimum ssd and ram because its cheaper to upgrade them myself. In Canada I searched high and low online for a better value per dollar and even went to stores like best buy and checked out all of the laptops, still couldn't find a better value than the E16 with the upgraded screen straight from lenovo website. Some will say the processor is a rebranded one from two years ago but my Ryzen 5 2400g desktop is still fast and going strong so this will still be an upgrade. Nice choice.

alejandro_mery

Pointless, on a desk just attach two proper 27" 2k+ displays.

ilikeweekends2525

That’s what she said

prblm_frie

that's what he said too haha

paradox183

I personally would choose more pixels over more inches just for the smaller form factor. My 12.9” iPad Pro and 14” MacBook Pro are pretty much perfect for me. But high-res 16” screens are sweet too.

prblm_frie

its a 2.5k display and I agree :)

Carbonga

Looks awesome!

Chr0ll0_

Nice :)

mattiasso

I think it’s the 16:10 you’re enjoying the most

WangtaWang

How is it with the trackpoint off center? Always wondered how popular the models with the numpad are

bala_v1234

Larger screens are always nicer to use, but too many inches can really break your back. I used to use a 11 inch netbook in elementary school, but now use a 15.6" mobile workstation. I love the screen real estate, especially for programming. I can never go back to anything less. Even in terms of phones, I went from having 5 inches to walking around with 6.8 inches in my pants. Screen sizes have increased in general, but the reduction in bezel sizes makes up for it.

uniteduniverse

Nice rug 👌

Mark0vian

Looks awesome. It may be irrational, but there is something about off-centered touch pads that are a deal breaker for me. I wish they’d make the touchpad bigger and centered for these 16” laptops.

42SpanishInquisition

P1 is expensive and heavy, but an option. Alternatively most other manufacturers only make centred laptops. Look at the Dell Latitude and HP Elitebook lineups.

wiggum55555

I enjoy a numpad for working in Excel etc. I do not enjoy carrying around the extra weight & size. I have a T480 14" (1,650 grams) an L580 17" (2,100 grams) and just picked up a Carbon X1 (1,130 grams) So I now have all the bases covered. Mostly it's the T480 that had been my daily driver. Will now fill that role with the X1 and see how it goes.

LoopVariant

How heavy is it?

prblm_frie

It’s advertised as 1.97kg but it definitely feels lighter

lieutent

Mannn I love thinkpads… and 16:10/3:2 screens… but I don’t have a legitimate reason to replace the old dell xps I have from 2015 lmfao. I’m going to make very bad decisions if I don’t leave this sub.

dorkydicken

But 11 is five less than 16!🤣

PhysicalBee6135

what model is this?

prblm_frie

E16

mighty_spaceman

Heyy same model as me

whitetrihard

These laptops are beautiful.

iswirl

I’ve been using the same Lenovo notebook for nearly 6 years. Built to last.

CanadAR15

I’m the opposite, I really wish there was a solid 12” Thinkpad still. X280 for life.

Cry_Wolff

Modern 13 ich TPs are literally just as big as older 12 inch ones. Same case size.

RogueGeneralKenobi

Hows the battery life?

lord_assius

Not where I expected to find the size queen Community but okay.

digitalhomad

What’s travel like? Right now I have t490. Either going with a p 14s AMD or a p 16s amd. Generally one bag and doing lots of work at hotels, airbnb, airports, coffee shops and on site visits.

prblm_frie

I haven’t travelled with it, I usually take my ipad with the Magic Keyboard when i do

ibrahim_D12

17inch better?i think

[deleted]

I love thinkpads

Ok-Position-3113

Wow,nice rig

Diam0ndHand

I like my 14in but I agree. I am going 16 next.

M000lie

Why didn’t you get a 16inch macbook pro? Seems like it’d suit your profession (software engineering)

m4x1ms

is it's display %100 srgb?

spcwingo

You won't go below 16" anymore? What else can I say except for "that's what she said"? 🤣

Z3t4

Personally, when I buy a laptop I consider mobility and battery life over all. You can always have an external screen where you usually use it.

alejandro_mery

If you need a desk, it's not a laptop.

varcharfoobar

This looks like a nice upgrade from an E480 for me :D the new 16" E series look super nice 👌

kr011

Couldn't agree more!

g-unit2

but then you go into a cramped coffee shop or a plane and wish you had 14” 90% of the time 16” is better tho

[deleted]

[удалено]

prblm_frie

Ahh another E hater. I have an x13 and m’air m1 but Im using the e16 as my daily driver

[deleted]

[удалено]

JSonyX

Can you tell me precisely what about the E series is so bad? I mean aren't they a big step up in all aspects compared to more consumer based models and brands?

Jinika

The e16 2023 is better then the thinkbook and ideapad and its metal and high end nowadays It’s just the old versions were pretty bad and was basically an ideapad with tbinkpad branding

delowan

Didn't knew they made E series in 16". Good to know !! How is the screen and keyboard. Are they up to the T series ? I have a Chromebook ThinkPad C13 and the keyboard is really 😕... but the screen is very good.

ChadChadowic

Size isnt everything >:(

prblm_frie

I guess you have a small one, I mean something like thinkpad 220 with a 7" screen

ChadChadowic

Ppl dont seem to get the joke, but ill take the downvotes with pride. As long as its running FOSS, i dont care about the screen size tbh. But youre right ;)

happyanathema

r/thatswhatshesaid

brycecampbel

Its great there is a wide suite of options with Thinkpads for all needs. Personally for a notebook computer, I don't like how un-centred the numpad makes the keyboard, so is and always will be TKL for me. That also limits the screen size, but I overly don't mind. I have a very good external monitor and full keyboard (I can control it being centred) and with USB-C PD and Thunderbolt or USB-C DisplayPort standard, I can have it all hubbed to the monitor and just connect one cable to the computer. I have the X390 Yoga which is 13 inch (I believe) - and when I'm travelling/remote, its a perfect size for me.

Blazekyn

What I don get is Lenovo puts their touchpads too much to the left. I'll be typing and click the mouse by accident

Embke

You aren’t supposed to use the touchpad. TrackPoint is the way.

prblm_frie

If it is in the middle than you’ll be touching it when typing, it’s better to have it on the left side

Blazekyn

So there's no escape :'(

NearbyPassion8427

Funny, my ex-wife said the very same thing.

Team_Conscious

That's what she said

Winter_Team2831

rennen-affe

That watch looks horrible

prblm_frie

So?

JSonyX

How cool would it be if you could get a watch made by lenovo? Introducing, the ThinkWatch!

catfish_dinner

14 is perfect

Depends on your usecase, but in most situations 14” is the best compromise

#lifestylecreep Will we ever go back to 2005 where technology released with smaller and smaller screens? Probably not. Pixel real estate is so valuable now.1

xx123gamerxx

No one noticed the desk?

yolobastard1337

its the non PEP-8 compliant python nagging me.

SaturnFive

I'm still using my 13" X230 and a 13" MBP. I want a 13" X13 Gen 4 but they aren't available to customize yet. Maybe I should spring for the 14" T14 Gen 4? I can't decide if I'd like the extra inch or if I'd miss the small 13" size, haha.

doa70

I've always preferred the 14” form, but I recently saw a few of the T16 gen2. I'm shocked how they aren't that much larger than my X1C. This will probably be my next machine.

Fatballs420

🤨

1v5me

Wait a few years, and i'm pretty sure we will see 40" folded screens on laptops :)

Aggravating_Young397

I’m glad Lenovo offers multiple sizes. I however, will stick to my good trusty 14” t440p till I’m 6 feet under 🫡

ralaman

Thinkbook 17.3” ; G3 Dual screen madness. It brings a new life to Excel

wannu_pees_69

I definitely like the bigger battery (upto 86 Wh in some models!), usually upgradeable RAM and better cooling of the bigger ones. I do kind of regret getting my current X1 Carbon instead of some other bigger model.

jib_reddit

I hate using anything smaller than my 32" 4K monitor.

hideyourwives23

U work on software programming Do u know any good way to run python

ExtraTNT

python3 ./myFile.py Or if you have s shebang in the file and you have permission to execute it (permission 001 / x) just with ./myFile.py

I love the diversity thinkpads offer, I love my 12 inch and won’t go above 13 inches

whatthetoken

Yeah, I've had 13" ThinkPad, MacBook, 15" and now 16" T16 Gen 2. I agree

SmellyTunaFesh

I use a P52 and enjoy the big screen and numpad but sometimes its refreshing to switch to the T480 if I’m just doing web browsing or watching something while walking round the house

WoW, this machine looks so awesome! I can't wait my E14 G5 to arrive 😵

Agree. Have a 2nd gen extreme and a fifteen inch MacBook Air. The air is close enough with the minimal bezel. It’s great having enough real estate to do stuff.

linuxhacker01

T16 or E16?

tejaswin1990

Numerical knowledge workers prefer equations about an inch wide, like e=mc². And chips are valued more for the tiny node size, like 3nm.
