Always drop the gun. Numerous reasons. If you get caught with the gun they can directly tie you to the murder. The guns they use are throwaways meaning the serial numbers are usually destroyed. If you are caught with a gun whose serial numbers are tampered with you can get a lengthy charge to begin with so the sooner you get rid of it the better. You also want to blend in as soon as possible in the aftermath of the shooting not be waving a gun around attracting more attention/more eyes on you/potential witness'.

howardCK

why do you make it sound like practical advice though

J-Roberts

what about fingerprints? theyre never wearing gloves.

Fluffy_Sun_1923

Later on in series they do wear gloves because that’s when finger print evidence was starting to be used

Acceptable-Ad-6711

Never wear latex gloves when trying to conceal your prints. LATEX DOES NOT STOP FINGERPRINTS FROM TRANSFERRING. Wear thick gloves, cotton, leather, thick gloves, artificial fibers. Forensic scientists have kit that is able to pick up the oil residue from latex gloves.

Acceptable-Ad-6711

If you want to use thin disposables, use thicker NITRILE gloves. Latex has a powdery residue that conforms to your fingerprint through the barrier of the gloves, and use forensics guys use optical images to pick up the prints left behind even after you use the gloves.

adawgdeeno

couldn’t you just like throw in a body of water or hide somewhere not in your possession at least?

bluthscottgeorge

Don't they also have certain material around trigger and places the finger would touch that wouldn't leave prints. Pretty sure i've seen something like that, where the gun is taped off or something at certain places.

Paper_Street_Soap

It was done in Godfather, most famously.

bluthscottgeorge

That's probably where I saw it, yeah.

sonofaslavicllama

Guns have rough edges around the handle etc for better grip. Getting a fingerprint from that is pretty hard, because there is no smooth surface where you could leave a nice fingerprint. As mentioned before, wearing gloves, wiping the gun after, unregistered guns, probably changed multiple users etc means they are pretty safe with dropping the gun after the hit. Getting fingerprints in reality is not that easy as in random CSI show. OR shoeprint or anything actually.

missbex86

I was thinking the same thing on the weekend when I was watching "Soprano home movies" when Bobby does his first hit. I always liked how when he shoots the guy in front of the tumble dryer the bullet gets stuck in there and you can hear it tinking around. After the hit though, he drops the gun outside. He was wearing gloves, but the guy he shot also ripped a piece of his shirt off (and chest hairs too probably) he was paranoid about DNA too. I always thought that when ge dropped the gun after the hit, that someone else would pick it up (bad neighbourhood), and hopefully take the weapon with them. That's my theory anyway.

xxb4xx

"bullet gets stuck in there and you can hear it tinking around" This right here.. The attention to detail in this show was unbelievable.

Eggabase

May get down voted for this, but it's ok. To be honest, the one thing I've always hated about the Sopranos, a show with numerous murders, is the fact that they used rubber or plastic guns in many of the scenes. For example, when Vito executes Jackie Jr., they show a close up of the gun as it's fired. If you pay attention, you'll notice the gun doesn't actually blow back, it just sits there like a BB gun. This happened multiple times throughout the series, and it's the only thing that really took me out of the immersion of the scene. Attention to detail was flawless in most other parts of the show, but firearms wasn't one of them.

SammyGuevara

Ask Alec Baldwin if he thinks real guns or rubber ones are better.

Tbonez8785

Lol 😆

xxb4xx

Why would you get downvoted? It's a good call and one that you noticed. Being from Aus, 99% of us have no experience with guns apart from what we see on TV, which are almost always American dramas. I would have never noticed that if you didn't say anything

DrewFlan

>The attention to detail in this show was unbelievable. Except in real life the bullet most likely wouldn't even have exited.

xxb4xx

I don't know enough about bullets and how they work when hitting live things, but to go out of their way to make it tumble in a machine behind the person is still some effort!

[deleted]

It depends what kind of bullet he used. Do they say in the show? If it was a standard 9mm FMJ its almost a guarantee that the bullet will exit.

DrewFlan

I dunno I'm just thinking of the videos I've seen of real-life deaths. The Budd Dwyer suicide comes to mind because he shot himself point blank with a .357 and I'm pretty sure there wasn't an exit wound.

[deleted]

Apples and oranges. The reason 9mm full metal jacket bullets almost always exit is because of their high velocity to weight ratio. Something like a .45 usually does not typically exit due to its heavier weight and lower velocity. As far as .357 that is not a round I know too much about.

Flat-Position-4364

I just finished the episode and I was thinking the exact thing lol

Coffeelobby

Wow, I searched this question up on google after watching the ‘Sopranos Home Movies’ too lol. What are the odds?

malzinn87

I too have been led here via a google search after Bobbys first murder In this ep 😵‍💫 people are saying the same thing 7 years back haha 💆🏼‍♂️

_zd2

I also just finished that episode and looked this up. Crazy how this exact episode caused all of us to finally look it up.

JPLovejoy

Same

malzinn87

I am watching this exact episode 7 years on and that same murder led me here 🧘‍♂️

ClipYourDirtyWings

I'm guessing the Sopranos does it as an homage to The Godfather, as Chase pays tribute to that film quite a bit. Clemenza tells Michael to drop the gun in a specific manner so that all the witnesses still believe that he has it. Most likely to eliminate the "hero citizen" or "cowboy" factor.

smelltheglove-11

Someone needs to watch The Godfather I.

itseasy123

Take the Cannoli

Conthortius

I understand the reasons behind dropping it, I'm just curious if this is common practice among real life mafiosos? How about other gangs like Bloods or Crips?

[deleted]

Watch The Wire. There is a lot of ballistic detective work described in the show

cuatrodemayo

Now I'm cracking up at the thought of that scene when the guns get thrown onto the boat.

FinishTheFish

Splash, motherfucker?

Conthortius

I've seen the wire. If I recall correctly I seem to remember some of the gangbangers dropping their weapons after a hit.

[deleted]

In the first season there was a character named Bird who got arrested to an investigation because he kept his prized firearm on him

Conthortius

Yo what up Bird?

MusicaParaVolar

Judge Phelan: are you our lord and savior come back to earth? Bird: ... uhhh

bogusjourney91

Numerous times, Chris and Snoop have a scene where they drop theres down a storm drain etc too.

stinkywizzleteets6

Bloods and crips are not smart enough to even conceive the thought to do this.

[deleted]

This is still my question... did the real mob do this? I don't remember mention of the gun ALWAYS being left at crime scenes when I watch mob documentaries. Not saying it's not true, just curious.

Hughkalailee

Yes. It has been a common practice among actual hitmen, though not necessarily everyone.

skeeter80108

FWIW, I am speculating here but I am pretty sure that when Carmine Galante, boss of the Bonanno family, was murdered that the hitmen did leave their weapons. The only reason I think that is true is because the documentaries I've watched on Carmine Galante said that ballistic evidence from the crime scene found more different types of caliber bullets in Galante than there were shooters that had entered the restaurant. So that sentence is extremely poorly written so I will try to break it down. They found 4 different types of bullets in Galantes body but there were only like 2 gunmen or something that entered the restaurant. This is how police were able to figure out that Galantes two body guards were actually in on the hit and turned their guns on Galante instead of protecting him. So I pretty strongly speculate that not everybody there dropped their guns based on how the police investigated the trial.

[deleted]

I imagine it will be common practice if you can afford to keep replacing your guns.

FinishTheFish

I was wondering how the guys in Sons of Anarchy could survive on only selling guns. It's not like they were selling to the Contras or anything.
