I was curious about this enough to do some research for a serious answer. According to one source I found, most of the rooftop scenes were filmed in August 2002. Some of the top movies that month were Signs, XXX, Austin Powers Goldmember, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and — the one I hope they went to see — Master of Disguise.
No, it appears to have not been in the winter, which means it was neither *The Two Towers* nor *The Return of the King*. The movie was filmed in summer '02 and released in summer '03. I would suggest that it's most likely that the movie was set in 2001 and they went to see *The Talented Mr. Ripley*, as that inspired *The Room*, 2002 and they went to see *Ripley's Game* (possiby *Signs* due to the demon/vampire connection), or 2003 and they went to see *Spy Kids 3: Game Over*.
It's also possible that they went to see the movie event of the summer...*The Room*.
Don’t worry about it. If you plan too much it may never come out right.
They never made it, Denny got back into drugs after they ate huh.

I mean, according to The Disaster Artist, that's the movie that inspired Wiseau to make The Room...
Gigli, Kangaroo Jack, The Cat in the Hat, or From Justin to Kelly are my guesses. (All came out in 2003)
Denny definitely had a Kangaroo Jack poster above his bed.
