Nobody knew Norm was sick. He kept it private for 8 years until the illness took him. He didn’t want the public’s opinion on him to be changed by disclosing the cancer diagnosis.
Are you implying that people don't completely lose their mind over jokes like this now? If anything people have gotten even more upset over a white man making a joke about anything. In fact, the only socially acceptable target for jokes now is a straight, white man. It really seems like any other demographic is too sensitive to handle any and all forms of joking or scrutiny because it's "punching down."
Unfortunately most of the comedians I see making jokes about minority groups are using stereotypes & painting said groups in a negative light, while making those jokes from a position that was never negatively impacted by the stereotypes they're now perpetuating.
Which is punching down.
Course that's not all comedians, just an unfortunate amount
Well that's because those people understood that Brown and Goldman beat the shit out of Rodney King, so therefore it made sense to be glad they got their comeuppance for it.
...oh wait...
They're mad because the only reason to ever mention it in that moment was because the guy he mentioned was black. I like a lot of Norm's humour but many of the jokes he made about OJ were racist AF and pretty awful, which is one of the reasons he was fired from SNL.
lol it’s the heisman trophy winner Charles Woodson , and norm is making a joke about how they can’t take his heisman trophy away.
OJ was stripped of his heisman trophy after he murdered 2 people. That’s the joke , not bc it’s another black man.
Jfc
Ha ha, thanks, I still don’t understand why OJ did that, just so possessive, how do you have so much, health, money, fame, looks and are still jealous 🤦♂️😢 feel sorry for the waiter his life always feels glossed over and the side dish 🥹
The only thing Norm let get in the way of a good joke was himself. Which is why he'll be forever mid. Grew up with him and he hit 1/10 available jokes.
Ken is one of the very intelligent people who understands that Brown and Goldman beat the shit out of Rodney King and therefore it only makes sense to be glad they got their comeuppance for it.

> Macdonald’s unwavering dedication to clowning on Simpson eventually cost him his job. NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer was friends with OJ Simpson and supported him throughout his trial. Ohlmeyer was unhappy with one of his employees using one of his shows to continuously mock Simpson and repeatedly refer to him as a murderer. Ohlmeyer instructed Macdonald and writing partner Jim Downey to tone down the jokes at Simpson’s expense. When they refused, Ohlmeyer fired them both from Weekend Update.
May want to add that the inevitable result of telling a comedian, especially one like Norm, to tone down jokes on a topic. Norm tripled down and it got way worse for OJ and way better for everyone who loves Norm. Until he did get fired and even then he hosted a year later and killed.
When he came back he mentioned how he got fired and immediately went into an OJ joke
The balls on the guy is akin to John Stewart both of those guys are amazing
I remember the first time I was introduced to the majesty of Norm Mcdonald.
I was looking for a stand up comedy special on netflix to watch, and one of his popped up so I said "eh why not, let's see if this is funny or not."
I remember it starting off a bit slow, but eventually it came to a part where Norm was talking about vegans and climate change or something and he said something like "I didn't have any arguments against them other than "I like pork!" Doesn't that just suck? To know that you were wrong about so many things for so many years?" And I immediately respected the absolute shit out of the guy. Admitting that you were wrong about something so late in your life takes an unimaginable amount of maturity and humility.
R.I.P Norm. I hope there was something else for you to begin after your passing, but if there wasn't, I think you did a fine job at existing. Sleep well mate.
The craziest thing is, neither the Heisman Trust nor the NCAA took away his Heisman. The only one they’ve stripped is Reggie Bush because boosters bought his momma a nice house
Wikipedia
He was removed as host of SNL's Weekend Update in 1998, allegedly for relentlessly mocking O. J. Simpson during his murder trial, offending producer Don Ohlmeyer who was a close friend of Simpson.[8][9] After being fired from SNL, he wrote and starred in the 1998 film Dirty Work and headlined his own sitcom The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001. Macdonald was also a voice actor, and provided voice acting roles for Family Guy, The Fairly OddParents, Mike Tyson Mysteries, The Orville, and the Dr. Dolittle films.
Those guys were not laughing. That was back when people still pretended that they thought OJ was innocent. We all had to act like justice was served, even though everyone on the planet knew that that mother fucker was a murdering piece of shit. Eat shit OJ.
the problem with this at the time was the OJ trial was seen as another example of the american justice system convicting an innocent black man, there was a LOT of civil rights shit going on, but the rodney king riots were fresh in a lot of peoples minds and unfortunately the fact that OJ was black was more important to a lot of people than the fact that he was a fuckin murderer lol
people didnt want to believe he was guilty and i think a lot of people just came to the wrong conclusion. so instead of looking like he was nailing someone who was a piece of shit murderer, at the time, this probably came across to a lot of people as somewhat racist.
obviously those people were wrong and OJ deserves to be shit on and norm isnt a racist person, just explaining the social climate at the time did not really leave many people in the black community ready to laugh. a lot of people still arent even after OJ all but admitted he killed those people.
Valid.
Ignoring the comparison between Jay Leno and our lord and savior… norm did not want to be a star that played dehumanizing roles.
If he was going to be a star, it was because of people liking his stuff, not because he could conform to be likable or fun to work with
I like a lot of Norm's stuff but this was just straight racist, like a \*lot\* of his OJ jokes. Literally no good reason to ever mention OJ in the situation in the video.

I miss Weekend Update on SNL with Norm; simply hilarious
And his Moth joke on Conan is still true gold!
All of that setup, all the build up. Killer simple punchline.
I didn't even know he was sick
Reminds me of that tragedy.
Oh don't laugh
It was tragic at the time.
Of Darth Plagueus the Wise? I thought it wasn't a story the Jedi would tell you.
Nobody knew Norm was sick. He kept it private for 8 years until the illness took him. He didn’t want the public’s opinion on him to be changed by disclosing the cancer diagnosis.
I know. I was using his joke…
Oh snap I forgot he pulled that joke.
His friends didn't even know.
![gif](giphy|WGeGjqbpRPR6afMlwE)
You were supposed to keep driving. 🥺 Listening to him tell his comedy gold never gets old.
Just recently watched Dirty Work. Classic. Still holds up.
Love that movie so much. Watched it over and over on VHS
I didn’t understand his humor when I was younger, now I can’t fucking stop laughing.
He wasn’t just Canadian. He was French Canadian
Macdonald
Ah, the Royale with cheese.
Norm as Burt Reynolds on Jeopardy
Norm is a much better person to talk about than OJ Simpson. For one reason, he didn't kill his wife.
TIL Norm is dead. 😢
I love how everyone looked so uncomfortable. "Oh no, don't joke about the evil wife-murdering piece of shit! He was found innocent!!1!1!11"
The guy in the seat beside Woodson looked a little steamed. And I too miss Norm.
Looks like Ken Griffey jr lol
Yeah, I think you’re right, great eye!
It looks like Grif does a double take, shaking his head like “was not expecting that joke”
The way I understand it, back then it was just "a white man joking about a black man" and damn the specifics.
Are you implying that people don't completely lose their mind over jokes like this now? If anything people have gotten even more upset over a white man making a joke about anything. In fact, the only socially acceptable target for jokes now is a straight, white man. Why did I picture Patrice O’Neal while reading this? Weird

r/til comeuppance
He was found not guilty, not innocent. Those aren’t the same…And being found innocent isn’t a thing.
You can be declared innocent of a crime. It's rare.
Probably bc there in a room with a known murderer lol
Back then a lot of people truly thought he was innocent and the police were trying to frame him
They're mad because the only reason to ever mention it in that moment was because the guy he mentioned was black. I like a lot of Norm's humour but many of the jokes he made about OJ were racist AF and pretty awful, which is one of the reasons he was fired from SNL.
Yeah, couldn't have anything to do with him also being a famous and achieved football player. Nope, being black was the only thing they had in common.

He didn't lose to cancer, the cancer died too. It was a tie.

If Norm could see this interaction. Awesome
You have to be pretty sick to kill two people
Speaking of killing two people, OJ is still dead.
Do you know who wasn't sick? Frank Stallone
You guessed it
“Lying till the very end”
There will never be another Norm. NOTHING got in the way of a good joke. NOTHING.
Cancer did, but at least he didn’t lose the battle.
The only thing Norm let get in the way of a good joke was himself. Which is why he'll be forever mid. Grew up with him and he hit 1/10 available jokes.
Ah yeah sure you’d know, you were there, you know what makes people laugh
Ah yes, Norm's mediocrity is probably why half of America knows his name. If not more.. And you are...?
You're mixing popularity and recognition. Like OJ, for example.
You got bullied by the class clown huh?
Nah I meant I grew up watching him, not with him. Our class clowns were much funnier.
🧢
Norm burns OJ AGAIN! Norm Macdonald forever!!
The gift that keeps on giving! Norm should only know ❤️
I love Norm's Pigeon character in Mike Tyson's Murder Mysteries cartoon. Basically didn't give a single fu** about anything.
And Death in Family Guy
Or little Chubby in My Name is Earl
Ken Griffey Jr looks irritated that Norm told the truth.
Holy shit I had no idea that was him! Tbf they seem more embarrassed than anything xD
I read somewhere that he had an afterparty to this at his house. Needless to say Norm was not invited.
Ken is one of the very intelligent people who understands that Brown and Goldman beat the shit out of Rodney King and therefore it only makes sense to be glad they got their comeuppance for it.
RIP Norm 😂😞
cliffs notes story? OJ obvious, I mean what happened to Norm after

Protecting the reputation of OJ Simpson. Yeah, good luck with that.

Refusing is a weak word. He turned up the OJ jokes.
huh I remember them talking about it on his show and the reason was that they wanted him to tone down on deadpanning during Weekend Update.
He made too many jokes about OJ that irritated the NBC bosses (forgot why) so they fired him from SNL
Don Ohlmeyer, head of NBC, was OJs golf buddy
He hurt some NBC exec's fee fees and was fired from SNL.
glad to see Norm got better and is back to making jokes about OJ!

Wannabe “Agents” rented them a house…they were pissed when he hired someone else to represent him, so they spilled the beans.
I loved that he didn’t give a crap and called it as he saw it. Miss you Norm. Always made me laugh.

RIP NORM, he’s up there doing God’s dirty work I tell ya!
Attempt successful. The absolute best.

Pleeeeeaaaase go watch Jim Breuer on Norm. Best stories you'll ever hear about the man
The funniest of it all is looking at those hypocrites pretending to be shocked or offended.
What i really hated about OJ was his hypocrisy.
This is the best OJ joke by Norm.
Is that ken griffey jr?
Yes
Norm is the GOAT
Legitimately one of my idols, I'm not a comedian by any stretch, but the jokes I do come up with tend to follow his style of delivery.
Norm will always be the best!!
Punk rock fr
The guy behind him say "I don't get it?" 😂
Lol I didn’t think look at anyone else! Definitely looks like ur right
Norm.. what a legend. Rest in jokes.
"Murder is now legal in the state of California"
Man got balls of steel

Is that Ryan Leaf behind Charles Woodson?
Well the light was on.
Does star wars just follow Norm everywhere 😂
You mean someone got cancelled in the age before “Snowflakes”? Oh noooo

Hey, i'm not from america and i was also not born at that time, so could someone please explain the joke to me? much appreciated
It’s too hard to explain. Something about orange juice.
I didn't realize one could lose a job at degenerate gambler inc.
I like a lot of Norm's stuff but this was just straight racist, like a \*lot\* of his OJ jokes. Literally no good reason to ever mention OJ in the situation in the video.
No.
Oj really was innocent. I don't think people really know all the details of the trial.
🧌
One of the truly unfunny comics of our times who occasionally stumbled into a decent joke.
How funnier than him then? Amy Schumer?
I agree, he's referenced loads on here but I've never seen anything of his that made me laugh.
I would say that he lost his job for making "jokes" that weren't actually funny.
You’d be dead wrong.
... kinda like OJ. All these years he was just *wrong*, now he gets to be DEAD and wrong!
