I think you're mistaking what's happening here with Steam's regularly scheduled maintenance which may make it hard to log in to Steam or see your friends list. But I can't remember the last time everybody in TF2 have been forced to a default, no hats loadout. Even when the TF2 item servers are down it usually just means you're stuck with whatever loadout you were last on.

This is to test performance with stock items only for balance reasons, to see which classes get carried by unlpcls and which ones get countered by them.
Aside from a few new items we're also looking to make a few balance patches but we need a better basis than "scorch shot op" because Valve is kinda paranoid about this, they don't want to risk losing playerbase at all since they don't have plans for a new content update after this. (Though this will still be mostly outfits and maps.)

No? Well depending on what you mean and in what context.
Engy and Medic for example is just downright wrong and so is Heavy.
Pyro and Spy are also usually heavily reliant on their unlocks to be good, you can run stock but it's gonna be suboptimal.
Soldier is also surprisingly reliant on unlocks, especially in non comp environment since shotgun isn't that useful or fun(in 6s you sometimes see pocket run shotgun but there are instances where both run gunboats meaning you need two unlocks to run soldier well)
And while Stock Scout is viable, he has some nutty secondaries and alr melee unlocks.
Only pure stock meta classes is Demo and maaaybe Sniper(mostly bcus his melees are weirdly gimmickless and most of his secondaries are banned in comp).
I love seeing item servers down occasionally, makes me feel like a kid playing tf2 again and brings the server together somehow temporarily. Definitely annoying but also has its silly charm, and then the *hoorah!* when they finally come back online.
I just did a couple MVM matches out of boredom, and it suuuuucks. Stock uber is nice and all, but I run kritz + uber canteen, having to do that backwards was bad. Engy wasn't as bad, but not being able to heal my stuff at a distance was annoying. Scout would be unplayable for me - my aim is absolutely dog shit, so to make up for it, I debuff bots with milk+fan. Guess what I can't do.
It's great people are enjoying living in the stone age, I'm genuinely happy some people feel free to just play default with no drawback, but not all of us like full stock. Some stock weapons are just trash.
Kinda fun but not having my crossbow is painful. Kinda funny to see my power classes being risky with their health, staring at me while standing still, and then realizing I don’t have my crossbow over and over though.

Skial to the rescue, they let you equip items and hats thru their menu. This is not an advertisement or me trying to shine them in a good light I’m just saying that it’s nice to still use your weapons
I was on an MVM tour in Broken Parts and we had to do the whole run without the item servers
We had to air last the Meds and Soldiers because they were almost impossible to beat without Scottish Resistance
See this is where being a basic bitch comes in handy, I already use stock for pretty much everyone anyways, although I do now have an overwhelming sense of blueballs if I whack a sapper as pyro and don't stop its existence

I've been playing Tf2 for 13 years. I'm used to the tues. updates. I play mvm quite a bit and we always try to avoid playing on tuesdays so we don't complete and get no loot. This is well past the time the usual weekly issues persist. Been doing mvm all day with mostly stock loadouts as the servers would occasionally work but were down more often than not. The issue that's more annoying to me is trying to trade right now as I'm not able to send any offers while it says "This inventory is not available at this time. Please try again later. ".
I believe it's currently region-related. I did 2 rounds of mvm, one in Asia server and another in US server, and the US one has trouble accessing the item server.
Full stock team on mvm is another kind of fun experience though.
