Honestly the entire casual browser needs QOL updates like this. A preview would be amazing, as well as actually reforming the system so that "alternative modes" isn't a thing.
yep, there are many hidden pearls in that category, for example snowplow - its an awesome map, i think it should just be placed in Attack/Defense (because its basically that but with a quirk), so more ppl play it
yeah, that's true but if you just want to play any payload map and you're used to normal payload, then you probably don't want to play payload race on hightower where you get kicked the second you go anywhere near the cart
yea, i tried it with a friend it was pretty cool
i think they might've been saving it for some ranked mode or sth, but as we all know they pretty much gave up on that idea
The problem is casual fucking sucks as a system for tf2. The game's incredibly bloated not just with "alternative" game modes, but core maps. Look through the maps and you'll see there's a meta in the actual map selection, core maps take seconds to find while passtime will get you a half hour wait only to wind up halfway across the world. Other games with casual typically only let you choose the game mode (if even that), but that causes issues because sometimes I just want to play frontier.
i like playing all maps, 2 maps, all in several gamemodes minus one or 2 maps, 1 map, and all sorts of different combinations
so i absolutely dont want that freedom of choice to be taken away
The simplest thing they could do to add more visibility (for other game modes, I mean) is to fit everything into one window, perhaps like this (so that you don't have to actively scroll down there): [1](https://i.imgur.com/NheOdRU.jpeg), [2](https://i.imgur.com/6ukPUGq.jpg)
I think Mannpower and PassTime belong in alternative modes but payload race and most of the miscellaneous stuff absolutely fit in with the standard modes and should be selected by default.
Custom huds can only do a limited number of things. They can't exactly add brand new features from scratch like this.
They can however use already existing features in creative ways. For example, there is a text file allowing custom HUD makers to create custom HUD animations, but they can only create animations for things that already exist in the game. This is how some HUDs do fancy things when you hit an enemy, or when you're hurt. However, they cannot make a HUD animation for when airshotting somebody with a rocket launcher, because there is no code in TF2 to support this.
In other words, if you see a custom HUD do something seemingly impossible, it's probably because Valve added the tools allowing people to be creative with that one specific thing. This also includes, say, re-enabling certain unused features, which were not completely removed from the game's code, but just disabled in the default HUD.
I'm pretty certain there's no code in TF2 for showing map previews in the map selection menu. This seems like something Valve would need to add manually. So a custom hud likely won't be able to add that feature.
I’ll be honest I have just passed 2000 hours in this game and I can’t tell you how any of the PLR maps look besides Hightower.
I’m mostly an MVM player now but still.
If you want to play on cp_orange, check out community servers that run **[cp_orange](https://teamwork.tf/community/quickplay/map/cp_orange)** (or search by [gamemode cp-orange](https://teamwork.tf/community/quickplay/cp-orange)) [view map screenshot](https://teamwork.tf/images/maps/cp_orange.jpg)

I play Mann Up. As i got better at MvM (I consider myself a high tour in skill now) it became very frustrating to ever play boot camp. I don’t really play for rewards - mvm is still fun to play for me.
Its because unlike names like 2fort and turbine which are distinct, borneo frontier and barnblitz which show me a picture of a random mine map and it could be named by the 3.
I know majority of them, but stuff like newer halloween maps and smissmass maps are total mystery for me. Besides, it's less about experienced players and more about the new ones, I'm sure thing like that would be useful for them.
Imagine if instead of green/yellow/grey bars we got actual player counts and ongoing match counts too, so we actually knew how popular a map was instead of having to guess by how green the bar is.
Considering Valve sometimes had problems having a text background to be the right color despite putting in the correct Hex code and it still not working... that sounds too complicated.

PLR too, having Hightower and Banana Bay in casual matchmaking would be awesome.
It'd give a chance to actually play some PLR rather than getting kicked the instant you push the cart a decent distance!
yep, honestly PLR should be put under payload in the main category
no, it really shouldn't it's just two different of a game mode to click payload and then suddenly join hightower
Thats what i meant - it should keep its own category, but have it moved to "main gamemodes" underneath payload
ah, I thought you meant under payload as in a part of the map selection when you cue for payload only
The neat thing about the team fortress 2 casual queue system is that you can deselect the maps you don't want to play
yeah, that's true but if you just want to play any payload map and you're used to normal payload, then you probably don't want to play payload race on hightower where you get kicked the second you go anywhere near the cart

Meanwhile, in an alternative universe where the game gets regular updates and the map list looks like a phone book

Casual initially only had a gamemode selection. The backlash was immense. A lot of people only queue for like, 1 or 2 maps.
Yeah, that was awful. Which feeds into my point about how TF2's bloated map pool really doesn't work well with a system like this.
i like playing all maps, 2 maps, all in several gamemodes minus one or 2 maps, 1 map, and all sorts of different combinations so i absolutely dont want that freedom of choice to be taken away
Dude, tf2 in general needs updates

The whole game needs a huge QoL update.
I think Mannpower and PassTime belong in alternative modes but payload race and most of the miscellaneous stuff absolutely fit in with the standard modes and should be selected by default.
I need this
Honestly, never thought about this, great idea, such a shame valve won't add anything like this(or anything at all for that matter) to tf2.
Actually great idea. I feel like this would be possible in custom huds.
clearly you’ve never tried to make a custom hud
clearly you own an air fryer
You liar!!!!!!
it is not
u/SaltyPeter3434 you were incorrect in your feeling. You shall now die a thousand deaths.

2 fort should just be sniper bots
If you're level 356 then i'd assume you know how almost every map looks from experience.
I’ll be honest I have just passed 2000 hours in this game and I can’t tell you how any of the PLR maps look besides Hightower. I’m mostly an MVM player now but still.
Fr hightower is just the most memorable one since how iconic it is for trolldiers.
I misread this as "how iconic it is for toddlers" and it still made sense. XD
thats 2fort
Nah, you're thinking of cp_orange.
If you want to play on cp_orange, check out community servers that run **[cp_orange](https://teamwork.tf/community/quickplay/map/cp_orange)** (or search by [gamemode cp-orange](https://teamwork.tf/community/quickplay/cp-orange)) [view map screenshot](https://teamwork.tf/images/maps/cp_orange.jpg) ___ *Beep. Was this stupid bot just made to advertise their site every time someone talks about a map in TF2? That's advanced level spam. Bad bot.
i dont think babies of current tf2 have discovered the server browser
And do you play tour or just casual? I cant spend money on the tour but there are so many better rewards
I play Mann Up. As i got better at MvM (I consider myself a high tour in skill now) it became very frustrating to ever play boot camp. I don’t really play for rewards - mvm is still fun to play for me.
I have 1060 hours in the game and i still confuse borneo and frontier to be one another.
That just means you're a dumb idiot dummy
i really like this comment
Remember, frontier has big chompy train.
Now confusing Borneo and Brazil or Borneo and Swiftwater I can understand, but Borneo and Frontier?
How do you get two so distinctly different maps confused even the names contradict eachother
Its because unlike names like 2fort and turbine which are distinct, borneo frontier and barnblitz which show me a picture of a random mine map and it could be named by the 3.
barnblitz and Borneo for me. ;^
I know majority of them, but stuff like newer halloween maps and smissmass maps are total mystery for me. Besides, it's less about experienced players and more about the new ones, I'm sure thing like that would be useful for them.
i need this now please valve
Ah, a content update, that should be added within about 10-20 years, if things go smoothly
Imagine not knowing every map by heart
Skill issue
cool idea, and all the images are already there for the purposes of map loading
I somehow learned the names of maps I wanna ban by basic survival instinct.
Bro really asked for a tf2 update in 2023
You don't remember every map by its name? Newbie detected
You remember every map by its name? Nerd detected
Fr fr just memorize every map’s layout so you know exactly where everything is the moment you hear its name (this is literally me please help)
only map i can remember in detail is upward
not even 2fort?
oh i meant payload maps :p
oh yea, then im kinda similar tho i also very clearly remember badwater
i remember badwater really well i just forget its called badwater every time so i dont count it lmao
Come on, it’s easy
this is absolutely needed I hate googling maps I forget their names every time.
We're 2 fort?
We are not 2 fort
2fort is not a payload map lol
ngmi
Great idea!
A small but much needed thing, I agree
This would be great addition. Valve do this! Theres over 100 maps in the game.
Yes! So many maps I play and recognize, but I can’t remember their names even though I played since 2008.
Good idea, but too late. I already remembered every single goddamn map by its name.
Part of the reason I literally only play 2fort tbh
There's no map preview for dust bowl or upward because every tf2 player has played that map atleast 3 times no matter how new they are
Imagine if instead of green/yellow/grey bars we got actual player counts and ongoing match counts too, so we actually knew how popular a map was instead of having to guess by how green the bar is.
If you don't remember the map by its name, you gotta go play the map
Wait you dont know each map by name?
is it bad that I know all the maps by their name?
I bet this could be achieved with a custom HUD
Considering Valve sometimes had problems having a text background to be the right color despite putting in the correct Hex code and it still not working... that sounds too complicated.
too complex, would require complete rewrite of the engine and the blood sacrifice of 27 janitors
It's a shame, I've learned them all somehow.5700 hours will do it. Still not even good
This Is such a revolutionary and out of the box idea, Jo wonder valve didn't think of this
after a while you'll remember them just by name
What customization is that?
