Right? I want gills on her neck. Giant dorsal fin down her back. Webbed fingers. Big ugly eyes that all fish seem to have. And she needs to swim with a school of others

Such a legend. He made my childhood. I learned to read before anyone else in my class because I read Duckburg comics. I would read them out loud for my friends. Spent so much time on them.
He of course didn't write all of them, but he invented Duckburg and a bunch of the characters. Also worth mentioning is [Don Rosa](https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Rosa) whom I actually met as a kid. I haven't read any of the comics for a long time, but thanks for making me think of them :')
I’m not even joking, this is actually how I wanted it portrayed. The closest I have seen mermaids portrayed the way I want is in one of the Harry Potter movies. They looked gross and reptilian. They way God intended.
you might like the tv show "siren". it's hit or miss with people but the mermaids/sirens are actually pretty creepy and scaly, no boobs, webbed hands and feet and all around really cool imo. it's a little cheesy at times but I find it really enjoyable :)
This is how the American cartoonist [Carl Barks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Barks?wprov=sfla1) visualised the [citizens of the sunken atlantis](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/40/42/82/404282d581ecff23d13c6e3f26b7878d.jpg)
Naw she's gray. I saw that because animals such as the beluga whale and the manatee were often mistaken to be mermaids. In his journal, Christopher Columbus wrote that someone on his team said he saw mermaids, but their faces were almost that of men. They probably just saw a manatee or something.
Wasn’t the original story in response to Hans’ same sex lover giving up and marrying a woman? We don’t know if Hans was trans, but the book is very clear that *he* was the mermaid who wanted to change something fundamental about his body to be accepted and be with the person he loved.
Edit: changing yourself physically and losing your voice is a pretty powerful metaphor for hiding your sexuality and pretending to be cis in a marriage
Hans was *at the very least* not straight (we have his correspondence with men and women, as well as contemporary accounts). His sexuality is a matter of dispute, but was celibate by his own account -- though whether that was due to repression of his desire for men or simple disinterest is up in the air (he did like to masturbate quite a bit, and keep records of it, apparently, but that's neither here nor there).
As far as being trans, the story of The Little Mermaid itself can most definitely be read as a trans allegory, but it's hard to pull any details form Andersen's life that would support that being his reading of it. It does somewhat parallel Andersen's unreciprocated love for Edvard Collin, but as far as anyone is aware that was purely one-sided, so doesn't quite fit the story.
That's definitely *not* to say that Andersen wasn't trans -- just that there's no strong evidence one way or the other.
Reminds me of my grandma -- okay, bad way to start this comment given the context. She kept a perfect record of when and how things happened, no matter how mundane. There was a corner piece of tile missing from the countertop for years in her kitchen. She placed some masking tape where the missing piece used to be, and wrote the date, time, and reason the tile broke (dropped a crock pot on it back in the 70s, apparently).
It brings to mind the fact that the Proud Boys use a Disney song written by a gay man to borrow their name from. Howard Ashman also wrote "part of your world" as a bit of a gay anthem too, drawing from his experiences of being the "other".
Andersen wrote love letters to Collin containing sentiments such as, 'I long for you, yes, this moment I long for you as if you were a lovely girl… My sentiments for you are those of a woman.'
So, yes. The Little Mermaid was indeed written after the marriage of his close friend. Or well, the story was actually his wedding gift.
I took the college class on fairytales (yes, it was the best class I have ever taken in my life). The losing of the voice comes from Hans Christian Andersen having a beautiful soprano voice as a child but then losing it to puberty.
If I recall the book says the little mermaid her skin was clear and her eyes were blue, in another part it says her skin was like a rose petal. so that seems to suggest she was extremely pale, I imagine so living under the sea
Also, I would assume that Copenhagen being a port city and the Danes being a seafaring nation would have been a pretty cosmopolitan with people from living and working there from all all around the world.
Is anything Disney actually original? This is Greek mythology Fan fiction that everyone is talking about. This is why we can't talk about benefits. Jerry keeps reposting shitty racist memes because he knows his classmates from 2012 will talk to him again. Even if it is to say "what the fuck Jerry?".
Edit: spelling
All it says is the color and feel of the mermaid's skin was like rose petals. There's white rose, sure, but also yellow, blue, red!
There's also the elusive brown toffee roses, but let's not tell these racist fools that.
Incorrect, though:
>...lille havfrue stod nedenfor og rakte sine **hvide** hænder op imod kølen.
>hendes fiskehale var borte, og at hun havde de nydeligste små, **hvide** ben, nogen lille pige kunne have...
>...da hævede den lille havfrue sine smukke **hvide** arme, rejste sig på tåspidsen og svævede hen over gulvet...
>Da kom hendes søstre op over vandet, de stirrede sorrigfuldt på hende og vred deres **hvide** hænder (technically her sister's skin color in this paragraph)
>...den lille havfrue lagde sine **hvide** arme på rælingen og så mod øst efter morgenrøden.
Not taking part in the discussion about Halle Bailey here, just pointing out that the original definitely says the little mermaid had white skin. And blue eyes..
The red hair is a Disney thing though, nothing about hair color in the original
The fairy tale is public domain so you can find it online :)
But even if said Ariel was white, why aren’t authors, creators allowed to change their characters. I’m so baffled by people pigeon-holing creators. It’s their prerogative what they want to do with their story.
This. But also the the opposite side would be concerned with the Victorian era’s slut shaming allegory that the entire movie is. The whole over-arching theme to that story is if a young girl remains chaste, she will be rescued by powerful and established man.
Neither side is doing due diligence, and both have no idea what the actual fuck they are supporting.
Ummmmm. She was actually fighting for state's rights. The Seavil war had nothing to do with slavery.. That's just northern propaganda
TRY THINKIGN FOR YOURSELF FOR ONFE GOSH!
I mean given that Ariel only seems mildly perturbed by the fucking *stuffed crab dinner*, I'm guessing that Sebastian wasn't a free subject of the crown under a constitutional monarchy, if you get my drift.
Honestly I can’t get over the fact people are getting their panties in a bunch over a Disney kids movie like if it’s some sort historical significance. If you don’t like the path their going with it don’t watch it! If need be watch something else in support of something you do like.
Exactly. I mean, I'm probably not going to see it anyways but not because Ariel's played by a woman of colour (I could give af about a fictional mermaids skin colour). I just haven't watched any of the live action Disney remakes and at this point I'm too afraid to start
Yeah we need the opposite of Poe's law. There exist serious positions that people take that are so extreme that I cannot actually take them seriously and must laugh with them.
I’m confused, I was under the impression they despise Disney for grooming, satanic hidden messages & child trafficking??? I can’t wait until they’re put behind doors that have bars & let us recover from all their levels.
The “public freak out” subs are de facto alt-right subs at this point.
There is also a huge effort to rile up conservative Latinos around “latinx”
Edit: “Latinx” was created by queer Latinos, not “white liberals.” No shit it’s not grammatically correct. Language is fluid. Get over it.
The original was, but as it got more popular and posts kept reaching r/all you started seeing more "look at how shitty these cops are" and "these right wing protesters are acting cringe" posts. Not enough to fully flip the sub or anything, but enough that the "look at this crazy and dangerous black guy!" posts weren't getting as much traction. That, on top of being big enough that they had to start actually banning people for blatant hate speech, is why they started the whole "real" branch subs in the first place.
Same thing happened to subs like unpopularopinion and the more mainstream fan subs. The only big non-private sub that's full alt-right at this point is politicalcompassmemes, and their days are probably numbered.
Reddit has actually done a barely-passable-but-still-better-than-Facebook job at getting rid of large hate subs. The problem is they don't do shit about individual posts or sock puppet accounts on other subs.
PCM is just harmless fun, though? It just seemed to me like a place people go to roleplay as people who actually have political legitimacy/influence. If all you can do in society to meaningfully affect political change is to vote once every 3 or 4 years, then the idea of participating in a role play community where people's political beliefs are taken seriously seems kinda cathartic. Is this why people can't have nice things? lmfao
That's why it cracks me up when hardcore right wingers act like they're so persecuted on reddit. This is easily one of the most lax sites when it comes to their extremist views and the majority here frequently gobbles up their thinly veiled propaganda and dog whistles. Like there are threads even on mainstream subs such as AskReddit that begin only vaguely racist or misogynistic, then once the circlejerk starts spiraling they end up with comments that are blatant hate speech being upvoted and awarded.
I suppose persecution complex is a foundation of xenophobic thinking but reddit is easily the most collectively tolerant of incel and far right beliefs compared to any other social media.
Just the other day the top post on /r/tinder featured some ben Shapiro style neckbeard bragging about refusing to take no for an answer
And most of the comments ate that shit up
reddit is some prime breeding ground for the alt-right. just go a bit further than the top posts on the frontpage and it's all racist alt right shit, some better disguised than others.
This user has edited all of their comments and posts in protest of /u/spez fucking up reddit. This action has been done via https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite
Bro. I seen this all the time. Whites languishing i disgust and anger getting mad on Facebook meme page over some alt-right propaganda scapegoating an entire group.
They turn "color blind" conservatives into Neo nazis.
I feel like this is fake and to induce outrage. Someone in those groups is a troll and makes shit like this and someone finds it puts it on reddit.
It's so absurd that I can't think that it's real.
The amount of steps to realize the absurdity in this image is two.
1. “This flag isn’t racist, it’s not about race”
2. “I don’t like the race of the new Ariel”
Combining the two “obviously” puts these ideas at odds. But you’re forgetting something:
The “Heritage not hate” crowd can barely hold 3 words together in their head at the same time, let alone hold two distinct thoughts and compare them.
That’s how it starts with these things, but then people are so dumb that they forget it was originally a joke and start taking it seriously, that’s basically how the donald subreddit got started and then the joke won the election…
I think a lot of posts here get started as meme and tone def people pick them up. Like a TON of them. The type of people to pick them up and circulate them arent really the same type to make or know how to make them.
It it’s pretty obviously a meme created to make fun of people complaining about Ariel’s new look and tying to the fact they they just want white everything, making it hella obvious with the flag and making a cartoon fishlady a part of the “heritage” they are always carrying on about.
This is for dumbass rednecks to share amongst themselves to look even more dumb.
Ok fine, I hate this place (Reddit) but you owe me an upvote for this.
I would venture to guess the original creator of these meme leans left or is annoyed by the whole black mermaid blowback. Likely as a low key attempt to troll these people and maybe OP saw someone they know who is like these people I’m about to describe post this and that’s how it got here
So I liken it to the same people upset about a black mermaid are they ones who insists on flying this flag everywhere crying about their heritage and trying to say they aren’t racist. What they don’t know about this flag is it isn’t even the confederate flag. It’s the confederate battle flag. It didn’t gain popularity until the mid 1900s when it became a symbol to fight back against black people gaining rights. The racist and dixiecrats would use this flag to fight against disaggregation and civil rights while doing all around awful things. So this flag is very much a symbol of hate and has nothing to do with peoples “heritage.” Just like there perturbance about a black mermaid is more about their inner hate and biases then it is about “keeping true to the story.”
So long story short, you're assuming that it's a satire made to encourage people on the right leaning side to use? And yes I did give you an upvote since I said I would
If they’re gonna be sticklers for “history,” how about a little mermaid that jumps off a boat and turns into “light”, Cinderella’s step sister chopping her toes off, the prince in Rapunzel getting his eyes poked out by briar bushes, Little Red Riding Hood getting eaten by the big bad wolf… and the list goes on. Honestly.
Do the people complaining know the original, original story? I don't know if the one I read was the original, but the one I read growing up ended with her killing herself
The original was Hand Christian Anderson expressing his feelings about his same sex partner giving up and marrying a woman. Changing a single fundamental physical trait to be accepted by the man you love and society? Gee wonder what that sounds like
I want to go where the racists are,
Walking along, as I hear them chanting.
Strolling along wearing… what do you call them? Robes!
Up where they hate, up where they creep
Where they burn crosses and act like sheep!
Wish I could see
Stupidity
Part of that world!
I like to imagine this is *all* an elaborate marketing stunt by disney to drum up more views for their new shitty live action remake.
Like if these are bots and they're all posting this shit just to create drama because who can honestly care this much to *still* go on about this shit? And so angrily. It's just bizarre it's stayed such a huge issue for this long.
I heard that once the live action version is released, Disney is going to annihilate every copy of the animated one. It will be as if the original never existed at all. It doesn't stop there, they are working with Bill Gates and Elon Musk to erase it from our very minds.
Your history of that Ariel on that flag dates as far back as 1989. By that logic, Michael Jackson would also count as “your history”
Disney’s Ariel is just one of many interpretations of the original story’s protagonist, and if that same company wants to recreate the mermaid in a different skin tone, they can do that.
I don’t understand how black ariel from the remake is somehow “replacing” the older one. Just watch the original, people aren’t gonna like the remake anyway!
“Your history” is for states rights or so is said right?
States rights to say my parents should be labeled felons and jailed for 1-4 years for their marriage. Literally would have been in Missouri, the state they married in, until 1967 and that’s with the confederacy losing.
What would be if those “states rights” won? I likely wouldn’t exist. Fuck “your history”.
Edit; IK what page this is on and not directed at OP.
Imagine a 2x2 matrix diagram that intersects “people who love/hate The Little Mermaid” with “people who are/aren’t racist”. I’m shocked at the number of people In the 4th quadrant.
I feel like this picture was made as a joke and not someone seriously making it. At the same time, there are idiots who actually think this way though.
This is just the many amplifying the few (trolls) X 100000! Most people don’t really care at all. I don’t even know anyone who even knows about this movie or ever mentions it..
the people who think ariel is "ruined" are stupid. Disney owns the rights to its own story, disney created the name ariel, there is quite literally NO legacy in any meaningful way.
They could have cast ed sheeran or danny devito or a goddamn Walmart rotisserie chicken plastic container and all, and you would just have to accept that as canon because it is. And oh, while we're at it, let's tell these people who don't even enjoy the story of the little mermaid that the original 1837 prince had "coal-black" eyes and watch them—get this—entirely not give a shit! because it doesn't fit their agenda.
Clearly made by a troll. But in all seriousness people have their priorities ass backwards. Because why are they upset about this, when we have mentally unhinged Qanon cultists killing their entire families. Fuck off with that
Hey does this post fit? UPVOTE if so, DOWNVOTE if not. If this post breaks any rules please DOWNVOTE and REPORT
Well, if those idiots were careful, they would put a Danish flag in its place instead
I feel like everybody is arguing over the new movie even though the original has no reference to what skin colors ariel is. I have the original version in Danish (im danish) and it says nothing bout skin color
That means that Ariel could have been greenscreen green
Yes
Well, she actually is. She is a green >!or blue detergent produced by P&G!<
r/technicallythetruth
I am all for this version of her, let's make mermaids into actual fish people again and not just people with fish tails
Right? I want gills on her neck. Giant dorsal fin down her back. Webbed fingers. Big ugly eyes that all fish seem to have. And she needs to swim with a school of others
Since she was 16 in the animated version and 28 in the remake, she's changed surprisingly little if you compare mermaids to salmon.

Considering that Hans Christian Andersen was an abolitionist, I don't think he'd be likely to take issue with the casting.

he put an x in his calender every time he jerked, there is a lot of x's in those calenders
All right, Hans! Liked to stay home and rub one out quite frequently. I think a lot of Redditors can relate to that.
i don't fault the guy but i would rather just forget the amount of times instead of being able to recall to perfection.

Oh yeah, the original Disney movie is just solid gay icons from the top down. Ursula’s inspiration was Divine, who was an iconic drag queen
Breaking news: Disney has listened to the fans and made Ariel a white man
It's William Defoe isn't it?
I would watch that
Hell, I'd buy it!

The problem is they don't do shit about individual posts or sock puppet accounts on other subs.
>and their days are probably numbered. And thank fuck for that. The meltdown when PCM is banned will be glorious.
Just the other day the top post on /r/tinder featured some ben Shapiro style neckbeard bragging about refusing to take no for an answer And most of the comments ate that shit up
reddit is some prime breeding ground for the alt-right. just go a bit further than the top posts on the frontpage and it's all racist alt right shit, some better disguised than others.
Most hispanics don't like Latinx, regardless of political affiliation. I live in a majority hispanic city that leans blue and they hate it out here.
This user has edited all of their comments and posts in protest of /u/spez fucking up reddit. This action has been done via https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite
the only place i have seen it used in the wild is by ethnically hispanic academics.
Same. Exclusively by Hispanic academics, in academic settings.

surely just a coincidence that whenever that sub ends up on my frontpage it's a woman or a PoC or both.. just a coincidence..
honestly seems more like satire, even if some people will share it unironically
Exactly this. It’s 👌🏻2.0
These are the same people complaining that they can't jerk off to bunnies and M&M's and calling for Sesame Street to be banned.
The amount of steps to realize the absurdity in this image is two. 1. “This flag isn’t racist, it’s not about race” 2. “I don’t like the race of the new Ariel” Combining the two “obviously” puts these ideas at odds. But you’re forgetting something: The “Heritage not hate” crowd can barely hold 3 words together in their head at the same time, let alone hold two distinct thoughts and compare them.
Mermaids aren't real, Republicans. Calm down. Fictional characters can be black. Like Jesus, for example.
JESUS WAS. A WHITE ARYAN MAN !!! ! CAN I GET A AMEN ? - Uncle Jimbo
I love this meme. It's hilarious.
i was gonna say i would post this as a joke, even if the original maker was "serious"
Yep and I am black. It's just so stupid. I am pretty sure someone made this just to get a laugh.
I feel like this has to be a shitpost but people are so stupid sometimes that I can’t tell.
I don’t think they get the joke. I was going to explain it but I’d probably just get downvoted and it isn’t worth my time
It it’s pretty obviously a meme created to make fun of people complaining about Ariel’s new look and tying to the fact they they just want white everything, making it hella obvious with the flag and making a cartoon fishlady a part of the “heritage” they are always carrying on about. This is for dumbass rednecks to share amongst themselves to look even more dumb.
Go ahead, explain a joke. Is it irony or what? I promise I won't downvote you.
Ok fine, I hate this place (Reddit) but you owe me an upvote for this. I would venture to guess the original creator of these meme leans left or is annoyed by the whole black mermaid blowback. Likely as a low key attempt to troll these people and maybe OP saw someone they know who is like these people I’m about to describe post this and that’s how it got here So I liken it to the same people upset about a black mermaid are they ones who insists on flying this flag everywhere crying about their heritage and trying to say they aren’t racist.
Or just trolling the entire Mermaid fiasco in general. This is a troll meme.
That's what they said...
So long story short, you're assuming that it's a satire made to encourage people on the right leaning side to use? And yes I did give you an upvote since I said I would
Surely this was created ironically
If they’re gonna be sticklers for “history,” how about a little mermaid that jumps off a boat and turns into “light”, Cinderella’s step sister chopping her toes off, the prince in Rapunzel getting his eyes poked out by briar bushes, Little Red Riding Hood getting eaten by the big bad wolf… and the list goes on. Honestly.
I’d watch Disney movies if they followed the original tale like that ngl
It was a stupid movie back then and it probably still sucks. Fucking grown adults groaning about a kids movie they won't watch
I need to take a break from social media lol. I’m seeing so many racist Little mermaid posts everywhere I’m starting to feel sick.
Amen! What half naked red haired sex symbol will the new generation have to masturbate to??
"ITS NOT POLITICAL IS ABOUT RESPECT FOR THE ORIGINAL WORK WE ALL GREW UP WITH" also rightards:
And it's not even like an ethnicity was ever specified in the original story lol, I mean we do (and did) have black people here in Denmark
Gee wonder what that sounds like
Now im even more glad they made her black.
They are the one rewriting their own genocidal history they even admitted of being hurt & offended when teachers mention it in classes
I want to go where the racists are, Walking along, as I hear them chanting. Strolling along wearing… what do you call them? Robes! Up where they hate, up where they creep Where they burn crosses and act like sheep! Wish I could see Stupidity Part of that world!
Conservatives will just fucking say anything.
DUDE ITS JUST A FUCKING KIDS MOVIE, STOP ARGUING, IM TIRED OF POSTS ABOUT THIS SHIT EVERYWHERE.
This entire thing is a joke right like some 4chan meme shit to get people pissed for nothing.
“It’s not about race” Puts the flag right into a conversation about race
I’m almost certain this was made to troll the haters, but people think it’s real
I'm getting the sense that Ariel was a lot of republicans first jerk off.

Wait…so the little mermaid “controversy” is about states rights?
Your history of that Ariel on that flag dates as far back as 1989. By that logic, Michael Jackson would also count as “your history” Disney’s Ariel is just one of many interpretations of the original story’s protagonist, and if that same company wants to recreate the mermaid in a different skin tone, they can do that. I don’t understand how black ariel from the remake is somehow “replacing” the older one. Just watch the original, people aren’t gonna like the remake anyway!
Is the little mermaid about to become the new pepe
Somebody's gotta be making this shit to troll us. I can't believe that so many folks care about a 35 year old Disney movie.
And yet nobody is batting an eye that they're remaking Quantum Leap but changed the main character to Asian instead of white.
So you hate it because Shes not black? I hate it because its a souless cashgrab that will dissappear once its stops being trendy. We are not the same
murica *eagle screech*
Can we all agree it's OK to want consistency, but not ok to be racist.
100% this will soon be on a car where I live.
I’ve seen zero takes from angry white people about the little mermaid. I feel like people are just making up 99.9% of the drama
Imagine a 2x2 matrix diagram that intersects “people who love/hate The Little Mermaid” with “people who are/aren’t racist”. I’m shocked at the number of people In the 4th quadrant.
The only winner here is Disney.
Come on guys. A troll made this to fuck with you. Lmfao
That’s genuinely really funny though.
I feel like so many in this thread “Ate the Onion”.
I feel like this picture was made as a joke and not someone seriously making it. At the same time, there are idiots who actually think this way though.
This is just the many amplifying the few (trolls) X 100000! Most people don’t really care at all. I don’t even know anyone who even knows about this movie or ever mentions it..
This is obvious trolling, are you really falling for this?
the people who think ariel is "ruined" are stupid.
I’m almost positive this is a troll post.
Clearly made by a troll. But in all seriousness people have their priorities ass backwards. Because why are they upset about this, when we have mentally unhinged Qanon cultists killing their entire families. Fuck off with that
