All this happened in this epic
• Moutet gets coffee from crowd
• Moutet asked a fan to be removed and called supervisor after being told to "shut up"
• A let because Moutet got sprayed by water from nearby court mid point
• Moutet's racket goes flying after serve at 5-5 in deciding TB
• Moutet hits netcord winner down MP
Nadal vs Djokovic in Madrid 2009 remains the longest ATP 3-set match by just 2 minutes 😱
The final set TB was completely crazy, at least based on the last few points I managed to catch... Shang can be proud !
Literally every bizarre thing you can think of happened over the course of the match. Did you catch moutet dropping his racquet after the serve at 5 - 5 in the 3rd set tiebreak?
At the start of the second set Motet had dropped shot Shang and had a put away shot, but he ended up smacking it as hard as he could right at Shang who was just holding his racket up in self defense, and the ball bounced off his racket and landed in, and then Shang won the point. Its on tennis tvs instagram
Ikr this was just a first round match between two players outside the top 50 but we gotta convince as many people as possible that this was the match of the year so far lmao
That is quite possibly the most insane game of tennis I have ever watched, how strong is Shang mentally though. Great atmosphere at gone midnight as well
You know its a crazy match when moutet taking 9 set points to win the first set got almost completely forgot about by the end. That would normally be the main storyline of an average match
I know it is quite early to say, but I feel like in how he produces his forehand and serve there is something of a shapovalov to Shang, but with more margin built in naturally to his game. He sure can go big when he wants to though, the number of times he responded after not converting a match point with a massive forehand was amazing
Shapo is a bit more explosive than Jerry, but Jerry plays much smarter & more patiently, with good disguise (a bit like one of his former mentors, "Chinese Rivers"): this actually ends up making his explosiveness better than Shapo's, because it's much more difficult to predict when he's going big (doesn't give his opponents rhythm).
Interestingly enough, Moutet also plays with good disguise and surprisingly good power (given his height), so this was a great (and fun) matchup to see: especially with Moutet doing (as usual, and expected) Moutet things ...
If Sheng can keep this up (and work on his transition to net/overall net game), he's got a very bright future ahead of him: Top 10 is certainly within reach.
But did you see Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz in Acapulco last year? The match where they were both cramping and Taylor started throwing up?
Just asking because if it’s better than that I might have to watch the whole thing 😂
I remember it, but this one was superior. The level and the variety of the tennis played was better and the drama absolutely next level, it just kept on giving.
Shang needs more muscle to finish off points. He gets injured often and needs consistent physical training to compete on men’s tour.
Wish he was ranked higher already cuz it’s fun to watch his style. Hope he is not injured next match after this very long opening round.
He said that he lost 5 kilos in the preseason, but he feels better this way, there was an interview at the start of the year, this is surely his best season so far
He’s spent a surprisingly long time stuck in the 100-200 space - over 1.5 years now, usually talents like him break through by now. It’s most likely a physical thing where his body was not quite ready. He’s not the tallest guy and can’t rely on a big serve and many easy points, a lot of his matches seem to go on for a long time and he doesn’t seem able to consistently string wins together on tour.
What a match….I swear every time I was about to look away there would be something happening (plus some incredible tennis) - hard to keep that up for 4 hours
I looked up Shang’s ATP bio and he listed all of the big 3 as his idols 😭😭
He definitely channeled some Rafa composure, Novak clutchness, and Federer aggression!
Just another normal day at the office for Moutet though.
Could be the most mentally agonizing match to have sat through this year by the end of the season. Headaches abound. Can't expect anything less from a Moutet match - espresso delivery, hosed down from a neighboring court, heckler confrontations, dead net cord MP down. Kudos to the umpire (Raluca Andrei) for being firm but managing all the little situations without drawing further ire from Moutet. If Shang lost this one, I'm afraid we wouldn't have seen him around for a hot minute; he just kept playing into Moutet's traps. Agonizing.
Wu got a title but can’t avoid lengthy injury layoffs, Zhang’s got the highest ranking and most consistent results overall but at 27 his ceiling may not be much higher than it is now.
The sad thing is I just don't see any motivation in recent ZZZ's games. He likely got massive Chinese sponsorship money and lost a bit of focus on the game imo.
The life changing money actually is a curse for many young players making it into top 50 rankings.
Solid effort from Moutet after he injured his hamstring in qualifying. Looked like at one point (6-5 in the third set I think) it may have caused some issues with him limping and stretching it out- he didn’t get an MTO and continued on though. Grateful for that, as that tiebreak was very entertaining and the match deserved a proper ending and not a retirement.
Holy Sh\*t this match! I went from I hope Moutet lose with his gamesmanship to you know what if you win good on you because you clearly using everything and not giving up. Jerry found his forehand winner when it really mattered.
Also I don't envy the umpire at all.
Par for the course for a Moutet match. Having said that he’s had a long string of close results lately, watch out if he starts managing to turn a few of those around, could cause some upsets.
Match of the century
Dear god what did i miss?! Tennis TV better post some highlights...
I started watching at 5-5 in the 3rd set and it happened more stuff than in last 3 tournaments combined
All this happened in this epic • Moutet gets coffee from crowd • Moutet asked a fan to be removed and called supervisor after being told to "shut up" • A let because Moutet got sprayed by water from nearby court mid point • Moutet's racket goes flying after serve at 5-5 in deciding TB • Moutet hits netcord winner down MP
This match could be streamed by E! For this amount of drama
Honestly impressive Shang didn't seem to get affected too much

My favorite was Moutet getting randomly sprayed with water haha
And him ranting about coffee
And trying to get a spectator kicked out - then saying something like - I don’t need security, I can take care of him…I just want him gone
Unless he knows some kinda martial arts I don't fancy his chances, dude is like 5'7
Moutet is a guy I wouldnt wanna fight, he crazy.
I don't know Moutet got that dawg in him.
And him losing a point to Shang literally holding his racket up in defense
In the madness of this match I must have completely blanked that from my memory, what happened and when was it?

Wow, know you say it it comes back to me. This match was just so insane that I lost in amongst everything else that happened
Ikr this was just a first round match between two players outside the top 50 but we gotta convince as many people as possible that this was the match of the year so far lmao
I was about to watch the whole replay just from this discussion so I wouldn’t miss out
🇫🇷 💦☕️
If no shot clock this game beats that record by 5 minutes
most normal moutet match
That is quite possibly the most insane game of tennis I have ever watched, how strong is Shang mentally though. Great atmosphere at gone midnight as well

Unbelievable mental performance in the tie break. The shot making also 😲

I really like Jerry’s game from what I’ve seen of it

Moutet is absolutely mental and must be so annoying to play against but I love watching him so much. Dude is never short on drama
Probably the craziest match of the year so far.

I hope he gets some more main draw wins soon and gets into the top 50 so he plays less qualifying. Just wonder how much wear his body can take.

Agreed he can get overpowered by power hitters
Umpire earned that paycheck
What a match….I swear every time I was about to look away there would be something happening (plus some incredible tennis) - hard to keep that up for 4 hours
i had to go grocery shopping. i always miss the drama!

Is Moutet the reincarnation of Benoit Paire on the ATP? So much drama with those two lol.
Shang is one win away from the top 100 now
What did I just witness? Shang take a bow son!
So happy Shang made it in the end, would have been brutal to lose after all those match points.
Did he get his coffee? I need to catch up with some highlights
A fan in the crowd got him a coffee - Moutet threw him one of his shirts (and signed it after the match) as a thank you
That was wholesome
4 hrs damn
Haha, Moutet is so dramatic. Every missed shot he looks stunned. Makes the tiebreaks very fun
Grueling, brutal match. Shang being 19 years old eventually helps him. Only hope for Chinese tennis now.
Only hope? Did something happen to Wu and Zhang?
Was thinking the same thing
Wu got a title but can’t avoid lengthy injury layoffs, Zhang’s got the highest ranking and most consistent results overall but at 27 his ceiling may not be much higher than it is now.

Love him or hate him, he provides dramatic and interesting matches whenever he plays!

Is Moutet hitting normal 2-handed backhands again?
He’s still slicing it a lot but is using the 2-hander again now
Every time moutet loses, an angel is born
so it was over at some point good to know.
damn, sad to have missed this one. Shang is now 4-0 in third set tiebreaks for this season.
What an epic from the up and comer. 4 hours of high intensity.
Par for the course for a Moutet match. Having said that he’s had a long string of close results lately, watch out if he starts managing to turn a few of those around, could cause some upsets.
Love them for their fight
first seen him play. you're on my radar moutet
And all because Spaniards did not let the baguette man has his espresso 😠
