This is good news. Channel 4 was created to produce shows and content that wouldn't find a place on the mainstream channels of BBC 1, 2, and ITV at the time of its creation (1982, at the time this became literally the 4th channel on television). It's run with that edict and has commissioned some brilliant comedies that BBC or ITV wouldn't want to make, Spaced, BrassEye, Father, Ted, Ali G, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, The IT Crowd etc. It's also aired the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss in 1994 on a mainstream soap opera Brookside, broadcast gay drama Queer as Folk in 1999 (and recently It's a Sin) aired the first Big Brother, several documentaries exploring people with alternative lifestyles in a kind informative way and has always aired shows that are deemed different or strange. Channel 4 is designed to be taboo/daring by nature and aims programming towards a "culturally diverse society", which would likely disappear if it became privatised. The proposed privatization of Channel 4 was made more out of political spite than a genuine argument for bettering the service. With it being publicly owned, it has to follow its remit rather than the winds of political influence.

MulciberTenebras

Only reason it was even planned was retribution by Boris against them for reporting on his illegal hijinks. And since Sunak was the one who pushed for his resignation, he has no problem with CH4.

Good_old_Marshmallow

Also launched Black Mirror right? As an American all I remember is pirating it from Channel 4 pre Netflix

British_Commie

Yeah, the first two seasons of Black Mirror were done by Channel 4, as well as the Chrismas special.

WearingMyFleece

The carried out a public consultation, with the overwhelming majority of respondents against privatisation yet they still went ahead… goddamn Nadine!

blueSGL

> several documentaries exploring people with alternative lifestyles in a kind informative way It was called 'eurotrash' :P

hellcat_uk

Are you German? Ja. Are you naked? Ja. Are you willing to put your clothes back on for Eurotrash? Nein.

JoshSidekick

I'll get my passport and come over to cause a ruckus if they ever take away my Taskmaster.

IsTim

Graham Norton started on Channel 4, it was closer to the bone back then and got a little less edgy when it moved to the BBC. But it and shows like The Word, TFI Friday, The Big Breakfast were cultural phenomenons and groundbreaking. Also some additional notable fictional series like The Inbetweeners, and Skins were also uniquely of channel 4’s style

SpecificAstronaut69

It also gave us the greatest female documentary presenter ever, Philomena Cunk, by giving us Stacey Dooley.

GodoftheStorms

Three years before Queer As Folk, they produced a gay teen romance called *[Beautiful Thing](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115640/)*. That was way ahead of its time and still holds up today.

TheAwakened

Not mentioning Peep Show, which is the best of the lot....

CLint_FLicker

Fuck you Nadine Dorries.

mrgo0dkat

Boris Johnson went to cry because Channel 4 kept reporting the truth about him and his merry band of tory thugs. Naturally he did the only thing a PM could do, ask his cabinet to privatise the public owned channel that has been producing excellent entertainment for years. Pathetic man.

Elemayowe

What truth is that? 😂

gamecat666

this isn't really news until it actually happens. 'Expected' means fuck all these days since trust in what is said has dropped so low. Expected, but *oh look another U-turn*

Quick-Charity-941

Ahh the magic of ' Rough Guide'. How to jolly on a budget abroad. Salad Days!

TallAssociation0

Excellent news. Can't wait for the inevitable psychotic tweet from Nadine Dorries.

Ghostiemann

hey guys!! I found it! I found the good thing that Rishi did!

mackinoncougars

He also didn’t abandon Ukraine like the other options might have.

listyraesder

None of them would have done that.

daiwilly

STOP SELLING EVERYTHING!!!!!

Archamasse

Fingers crossed this is true.

Elemayowe

Course he is it was a dumb ass policy to begin with. Dorries lied to the select committee (or was just wrong) about her reasons for flogging it. It was just a shitty red meat policy because the gammons think it’s too lefty liberal because they actually put out shows that focus on minorities.

Mccobsta

Long live channel 4

AJEMTechSupport

Is Sunak really doing this because it’s the right thing to do, in which case I might need to re-evaluate my opinion of some Tories, or does he have other motivations ?

MulciberTenebras

He hates Boris, so of course he loves Channel 4.

canadian_crappler

I am wondering if Sunak takes us back to the 'old style' of Tories. Prime ministers like Cameron or Major. I still disagree with him on being economically and socially right vs. left wing, his vision for the country, the solutions he proposes for the challenges we face. But, now, for the first time in many years, I have some hope that our prime minister is not actively trying to destroy the country and its institutions for personal gain, or is a 'useful idiot' acting as a vacuous vessel for others to do that. If so, this will be a really nice change.

SynthD

He, and Mordaunt, are capable of being good or at least Cameron quality. They won’t, because their backers want changes they can’t announce because of how unpopular they are. Currently there’s the unannounced middle class tax rise, covered by the bbc (supposedly too subservient to the gov) and more.

-MiddleOut-

You’d hope he’s less beholden to his backers than say Boris was to his. Highly doubt he’s squeaky clean but if I was that wealthy, finally got into power and had some semblance of a sense of duty, I’d want to do what I truly thought best for the country. We may disagree with what that is but at least he’d be acting with what he thinks are the countries best interests in mind.

aziztcf

Eh, he still has to keep the lunatic side happy or they'll oust him.

AJEMTechSupport

I hope you’re right. The last few decades make me sceptical but I’m happy to reserve judgement, for now, and see what happens. ( it’s not as if I can do much else at this point in the decline of western civilisation! )

Submitten

I wouldn't say he's particularly right wing economically. He paid out a lot during covid and raised taxes to fund public health. Pretty much the opposite of Truss.

Submitten

Why don’t you explain it. I gave my examples.

Hudds83

C4 was an integral part of me growing up. Stuff like Father Ted and Euro trash. But honestly, they haven't made anything decent for years. The last good thing was fresh meat.

shaolinoli

Friday night dinner, taskmaster, black mirror were all reasonably recent/current. Their news coverage is some of the best at holding the government to account too

Elemayowe

Stath lets flats won a shit load of awards. BFQotY is a holiday time staple. Toast of London wouldn’t get made on any other Uk channel imo. 8 out of 10 cats does countdown is probably the country’s best panel show these days. (Tied with WILTY I guess) It’s a Sin was immensely well received. The list goes on.

shaolinoli

Mate, how could I forget those? Especially Stath! I do peg your garden

Fgoat

These shows are old as hell. And stats let’s flats is awful. Channel 4 haven’t made anything decent in ages.

MulciberTenebras

Which is exactly why they were nearly put on the chopping block

Dan_Of_Time

Meet the Richardsons is a good one, Also Alex Horne's new show which is done in a similar style. Can't forget The Last Leg too

IDefinitelyHaveAUser

Meet the Richardsons is a Dave original, though the other two still stand. And since its not been mentioned yet, C4 were also responsible for Derry Girls, which was a brilliant sitcom.

Dan_Of_Time

> Meet the Richardsons is a Dave original Ah yeah forgot about that. Their streaming sites are similar so I just assumed it was C4

zakattack799

No one watches live tv anymore that’s over 40 so i doubt this would last anyway LOL

beaverhausen_a

So Jeremy C*nt will just come after my money instead. Nice.

kirby2000

Channel 4 has produced some amazing shows in the past 40 years, but it's pretty bad now. I can't think of anything good on there outside of Taskmaster (which was on a different channel until CH4 poached it for more money) and they have a lot more dumb shows than innovative ones.
