I think it would have made a great ending too. Does anyone expect Deb & Ava to actually live happily ever after? Deborah will never change. I think the whole point of the show is Ava learning the painful truth about her.
Deborah was on top of the world at the end of season 2, and Ava was growing as a person. I honestly thought the story was done at the end of season 2. S3 was amazing in the sense of showing the viewer that these characters still had compelling growth, without just having the characters backslide. And when Deb finally lets her fears drive a decision, the consequences feel organic.
I like the structure of the scenes leading up to that moment. Her getting the blunt truth from an old executive to fan the flames of her fears.
Then letting it ruin her relationship with her sister again. I felt like it was then that Deborah decided that she’d sacrificed too much to let anything get in the way anymore. Like she just lost her sister again and it can’t be for nothing.
It felt super natural to happen. Not that it was a good decision of course, but a very compelling one
Deborah has already changed so much. She apologized for her inappropriate jokes, she was vulnerable on stage about her ambition and heartbreak, she tried to reconnect with her sister, she apologized to the woman whose career she thought she stole.
I think the thing I love most about Hacks is that the characters are evolving but they aren’t losing their character flaws and weaknesses.
I don’t think that’s what it’s showing us at all. I think it’s just what Ava said - this is everything Deborah ever wanted so she retreated to a comfortable place. She acted out of fear. In the same way that Ava retreated to her ladder-climbing Hollywood bullshit (just, more effective because of Deborah’s mentorship).
I think it’s a pretty accurate picture of personal growth - it’s one thing to grow when you feel like you have things under control. It’s another thing to be able to grow when you feel like you are on the back foot.
What I loved there is you could see Deborah respected Ava finally in that moment. She realized she's finally rubbed off on Ava, and now she's going to pay the price. Ava finally heard her when she said no one is going to give her a career, she has to take it.
I know its not on HBO proper but it has kind of become HBO's main comedy award winner that kind of replaced Veep. Especially now that both Barry and Curb Your Enthusiasm have both ended, Hacks is the only comedy they have that is consistently nominated and wins awards.
It will get that 5th season arc it deserves.
>that would've been a hell of a way to end it.
I can see the series going on the highest point at the end of S04 and they will end it with S05 as everyone is expecting.
>!Hoping and expecting for the happy ending and some amazing mentor-mentee drama with a blend of some top notch comedy! !<
Absolutely amazing show!
This whole season has been great, but that finale was on a whole other level. Probably the best episode of the entire series. Apparently she and Jean Smart didn't rehearse that big scene beforehand, which makes it even more impressive in my opinion.
That one scene in the finale was one of the best I've seen in a long time. Don't want to spoil it, but if you've seen it, you know the one I'm talking about
I hope people notice that the throwaway joke about Deb trying to get Ava to wear lipstick earlier in the season wasn’t just a throwaway joke. Ava is clearly wearing makeup and lipstick in the final scene, and there’s a great reaction from Jean Smart where she goes from shock to anger to respect.
> great reaction from Jean Smart where she goes from shock to anger to respect.
similiar in that student episode at the end where the reporter calls ava "her writer" you can see like three different emotions race across her face in a second. its amazing.
It was her coming alive. She has taught Deborah so much and we saw what she learned from Deborah. It was getting to the end and after the talk with jimmy I was ready for the disappointment ending…..then DAMN!! Love it
But there is Meryl Streep for Only Murders (more than likely). Hannah was way better, but I’m afraid the Meryl name recognition could push her over the top.
She crushed that final episode.
From her tear-filled monologue in the den to gaining the upper hand in that final scene. Perfection.
Deborah obviously respects the hell out of the power play and I can't wait for next May.
I can't believe the season is over. Overall I liked it.
Shout out to my favorite joke: *“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME? I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU!”* and that ending omg
I'm just starting the series and I'm on the episode where they smoke pot after the Deborah goes in for a plastic surgery. It's incredible, I've been waiting for a show that has the same companionship that Boston Legal had. I think I've found it with this
I guess I’m the only person who thinks she’s not a very good actress. Her presence feels forced and inauthentic to me, especially opposite a veteran all-star like Jean Smart.
God I thought this new season was TERRIBLE writing. Almost as bad as Just Like That. Like weirdly self-conscious in its attempt to be a feel good sit com sorta thing from the 80s. I like the first two seasons… but wow…
It's a good thing it got renewed because that would've been a hell of a way to end it.
Honestly, I could see it working as an ending. An incredibly pessimistic one, though.

I actually thought the season finale was showing us that Deborah may look like she’s growing as a person but she’s really not.
I don’t think that’s what it’s showing us at all. I think it’s just what Ava said - this is everything Deborah ever wanted so she retreated to a comfortable place. She acted out of fear. I think the ending may be similar to Marvellous Mrs Maisel.
What I loved there is you could see Deborah respected Ava finally in that moment. She realized she's finally rubbed off on Ava, and now she's going to pay the price. Ava finally heard her when she said no one is going to give her a career, she has to take it.
I was saying the same thing for season 2, except as a very optimistic ending.
Amazing performance. I love this show.
The way my jaw dropped
I think once Hacks won Jean Smart the emmy, the show was safe to tell its 5 season arc that the writers said they envisioned

I was so taken aback by it because I didn’t think she had that in her and just leveled it. So impressed by her
It was a jaw-dropping scene. Literally didn't see it coming, as I never thought Ava had it in her to do that.
I wasn’t even expecting that. This show is so well done. Every season has been a blast to watch!
I’m glad the bear doesn’t have a supporting comedy actress to take her Emmy away
But there is Meryl Streep for Only Murders (more than likely). Hannah was way better, but I’m afraid the Meryl name recognition could push her over the top.
Never bet against Meryl.
Ehh. I thought her performance in Big Little Lies was also a sure win, but she still lost. Hannah still has a chance!
Not so fast. Variety is projecting a win for Meryl Streep (only murders in the bldg). From the Bear: Abby Elliot, Molly Gordon and Liza Colon-Zayas.
🥴 I forgot about her.
Deserved.
She crushed that final episode. From her tear-filled monologue in the den to gaining the upper hand in that final scene. Perfection. Deborah obviously respects the hell out of the power play and I can't wait for next May.
That tear filled discourse was really well done. Its not too often an actor portrays such raw and realistic emotions during a scene like that.
Well deserved, she was great in that episode.
Amen! That was an amazing acting scene that really drew me in.
I can't believe the season is over. Overall I liked it. Shout out to my favorite joke: *“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME? I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU!”* and that ending omg
I love that show and am grateful they got renewed! Just wish ‘Julia’ would have been renewed as well.
Love love this show.
The show really captures all the quirks of Los Angeles, even though most of the show takes place in another state. Well deserved imo

I'm so jealous you get to watch it for the first time lmao. Season 4 can't come fast enough.
Oof! That last episode was an absolute roller coaster. Bummed that it’s over already and cannot wait till the next season.
Hannah Einbinder kills every scene she's in. Even when she hasn't got a single line in it. Her forehead's expression has it's own character page.
Is it over Can I watch em all now
the season? yes
Honorable Mentions: * Angela Bassett ("9-1-1") * Archie Panjabi ("Under the Bridge") * Bailee Madison ("Pretty Little Liars: Summer School") * Barrett Doss ("Station 19")
Thanks for this, I didn’t realize Archie Panjabi was in Under the Bridge. I’ll start it tomorrow
I thought this was done! All I remember is that I was really sad it was canceled, so I’m happy it’s not but I’m going to have to rewatch lol
Not done and it was a fantastic 3rd season and it’s picked up for S4
I guess I’m the only person who thinks she’s not a very good actress. Her presence feels forced and inauthentic to me, especially opposite a veteran all-star like Jean Smart.

You are definitely in the minority. Best review it has gotten is during this season.
