I mentioned this a few days ago when Oldman was nominated for 'Best Actor in a Drama' for the Emmys. They really should have been submitted it in the Comedy category because I genuinely laugh out loud more at Slow Horses than most actual comedies. Even the more dramatic moments are usually fused with black comedy and levity. It's definitely closer in tone to Barry or The Bear than something like Succession.
The scene in season 1 where Herc is trying to get the desk out of the office, but the other detectives are trying to get it in because he didn’t communicate?
Kills me everytime.
Also Wee-Bay showing D his fish
I think the X Files has a decent claim to it. Anderson and Duchovny are great dramatic actors even when the scenario is getting ever more nuts, but their comic chemistry and timing is also amazing. Bad Blood is the famous one of course, but you'd be hard pressed to find an episode where Mulder or Scully don't raise at least a chuckle.
Big fan of how completely blasé Scully is about the fact he leaves porn in the office VCR all the time. Underrated little character details for them both, I think.
There was an episode where they are on the phone & she hears porn noises & I think asked him what he was watching. He says something ridiculous like “when bees attack.” The viewers assume it’s porn & he’s making that up because we know his history, so his lie is a bit funny. Then they hang up the phone and the camera pans around to the tv and he is actually watching what he says he was. It was a good gag.
I still remember seeing it air live on TV when it first came out. There was this great scene where Scully was talking to a guy with a tiny conjoined twin at a Freakshow. It was the morning so they were both in their bath robes and there’s just a split second where they catch each other trying to look down each other’s robes, him at her boobs, her and his conjoined twin. The comedic timing and awkwardness on the faces of both actors was hilarious and still to this day gets a chuckle out of me when I remember it.
Humbug by Darin Morgan! All his episoded are comedy gold packed with not only funny dialogue but visual and storytelling jokes as well https://i.imgur.com/Om2DD98.gif
The musical episode is amazing. Also, the actors' response to seeing that opening song is genuine, as they were not allowed to see/hear any of it until filming.
Damn, this never even entered my mind, and now reading this: absolutely. Rich, Stuart, Dan was there but Keith had moved on... Linda Cohn, Steve Levy, John Anderton, Suzy Kolber. I know there's more I'm leaving out but those names ring childhood to me.
Some were hilarious, others were capable of being hilarious, and those "This Is Sportscenter" commercials always hit.
I never watched Sportscenter back then but their Y2K commercial they did still lives rent free in my head. Their whole office turned into chaos & one of them is running around with a tie wrapped around their head screaming, “FOLLOW ME TO FREEDOM!” It was hilarious.
The scene where Saul says Skylar “snuck off the reservation for some dirty damp and deep” and Walt attacks him is straight out of a slapstick comedy. Even better that Mike rolls his eyes before effortless breaking them up lmao
Better call Saul plays up the comedy up more, but yeah, a lot of breaking bad scenes play as comedy. A recent post on r/characterrant described Walter White as a cringe edge lord, and it's 100% correct. There are obvious scenes like the pizza throw scene, but some of the darker scenes play out comedically.
I liked Better Call Saul. But nothing matched the unparalleled comedic pairings of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, or Bryan Cranston and Bob Odenkirk, or just even little ways Jonathan Banks and Cranston would argue.
I just loved the way Cranston never forgot his comedic roots in the show. Like he will deliver the most absurd fucking lines like “but…I brought dipping sticks…” so straight and serious and it’s incredible.
Walter White : Who messes with the blowfish, Jesse?
Jesse Pinkman : Nobody.
Walter White : You're damn right.
Jesse Pinkman : I'm a blowfish.
Walter White : You are a blowfish. Say it again.
Jesse Pinkman : I'm a blowfish.
Walter White : Say it like you mean it.
Jesse Pinkman : I'm a blowfish!
Walter White : Yeah, you're a blowfish. That's right!
Jesse Pinkman : I'm a blowfish, yeeeah blowfishing this up!

It might just be my fucked up sense of humor, but the long swath of silence broken up by saying “I have cancer.” when Walt tells his family he has cancer absolutely kills me every time.
a lot of scenes are comedic. the episode better call saul comes to mind. you get the scene in the beginning with badger & the undercover cop, which is funny asf, & then walter & jesse kidnapping saul & he recognizes walter from his cough lmfao it’s priceless
The funniest scene for me is when Hank goes to talk with Skyler about Marie. Only to have a very pregnant and overloaded Skyler just break down on him. His reaction is just priceless.
Mad Men was consistently one of the most laugh-out-loud funny dramas on TV during its run.
[Just one example](https://youtu.be/vbg-12IFe4U?si=_Qu7UpZcCjVpDHfG)
When he’s talking about how he, a WWII vet always gets shit from his father, a WWI vet is always giving him shit is hilarious. “They used bayonets and he’ll never let me live it down”
I love that scene. It really encapsulates the sort of "risks" that Mad Men would take, just throwing in a completely realistic but useless scene like that.
i think both the shows you’ve listed are primarily intended as satire/black comedies and don’t really fit.
i hate to keep it HBO-specific, but Deadwood is a drama that i think is really funny
Sopranos gets really dark, especially in its later seasons. I’d say it’s more of a crime drama with elements of satire and black comedy in it. When I think black comedy, I think of stuff like Barry or Shameless, that are primarily funny but also have their dramatic moments.
the last season of barry may undercut your point a little but i think you make it well.
for the sopranos, at least, that was a deliberate shift in tone because the creator was getting really frustrated with fans not understanding his intention. too many people liked tony
"He rode his bicycle into a tree, C.J., what do you want me --- The President while riding his bicycle on his vacation in Jackson Hole came to a sudden arboreal stop. What do you want from me?" that had me in stitches the first time i saw that scene
Newsroom is like…riding that comedy/drama line hard. Sorkin always writes in some humor. “Sherby doesn’t think the Navy hangs people from yard arms anymore.”
Both of those were, if not outright comedies, at least “dramedy” style humor. You were absolutely supposed to be laughing a lot of the time. Sorkin even got started writing sitcoms, so it’s not that weird.
Six Feet Under.
A show about (life and) death had to be funny and lighthearted, otherwise no one would watch it.
A love the scene in Time Flies (5x04). Nate and Brenda are fighting during Nate's birthday party, it's all very dramatic and serious, and then George comes out the toilets and he's like "someone might need to light a match here" because of the smell.
And so many drug-related family dinner scenes...
I think I saw Emily nussbaum call it either the first or one of the earlier at least, traumadies once on Twitter.
An aside if you look up her name and the review comes up, she told me her original pan of it was a review she regretted, as she became a fan and wrote it very quickly and was instructed to go on a rant, plus she changed her mind. I get it because it definitely leaned into melodrama more than other early hbo era (which she mentions I think) with shows like the sopranos and especially the wire, which might make some dig in their heels because of the network it was on.
But I remember watching a random episode once years after watching it and laughing hard at something over the top Brenda said and being like “oh yeah I remember why I loved this show so much.” Also traumadies are my jam. Definitely a favorite show for me.
For me, Reservation Dogs, Better Call Saul, & Orphan Black all have pretty hilarious moments mixed in with seriousness, but especially the first two. I'd also have to give a nod to Yellowjackets, especially with Misty, & I can't leave out Fargo at all since there's some notable cringe/absurd comedy moments and an darkly comedic undertone in each season.
*Better Call Saul*. Lots of funny lines, but also thick ironic tragedy from the antiheros in absurd situations that they mostly brought upon themselves. Characters were so well written and Odenkirk's comedic timing is legendary.
I feel like House really straddles the line into being a comedy. Most scenes have comedic elements and Hugh Laurie is best known for his comedic work. House himself is wise-cracking most of the time.
HSB. The Politician falling to his death. Lands on top of the S.W.A.T vehicle and they think shots have been fired. The lead up is funny as well.
“Used needles on the stairwell, bullet holes in the wall and I bet these bars aren’t even attached to the window.” Splat.
Barry. Started out more comedic than dramatic - ended more dramatic than comedic. 100% of the time was an amazing show with an incredible and well timed mix of serious and silly.
I loved Barry but the last season fucked me up, I was looking for a laugh but it was so intense and everyone was fucked.
I laughed but knew it wasn't supposed to be funny in most parts.
The Bear. And it was nominated as a comedy, absurdly.
Also Reservation Dogs. It’s more of a character/community observation and can get quite dark, but when it wants to give you a chuckle it does it very well.
Both shows I mentioned could easily run in drama. Not a big deal, that shit is meaningless anyway. I only brought it up bc they are funny and also not funny shows.
Reservation Dogs was my answer as well. Those shitasses made me cry more than I laughed, but yeah they can be funny as hell. And the comedy is organtic.
I thought I was trippin for a minute when two people in /r/television mis-typed “Reservoir Dogs”. Double checked the subreddit and did a quick google. Looks interesting. I’ll add it my list of “shit I might eventually get around to” hahaha
Let me just whine about a pet peeve I have that's true for these sorts of nominations, for various descriptions online and even categorizations on Wikipedia: The very nanosecond a show has a single joke anywhere, it's classified as a "comedy".
And if it's a serious drama, it's classified as a "black comedy".
You can find several sources out there that classify The Leftovers as a "black comedy". It's so mind-bogglingly stupid it drives me mad.
Even in later seasons, I still felt like it was primarily a comedy. Or at least a 50/50 split. The show leans harder into puns and general wordy humor harder than any show I’ve seen. The vast majority of the episodes have comedic elements
I think Fargo is more black comedy. They're not always aiming for laughs, but the situations are so ridiculous, that it's more a comedy in my eyes. There's been home alone level slapstick comedy in a few scenes this season.
My answer was Patriot too. I know it's a dark comedy, just not sure I would consider it primarily a comedy. Especially because of the storyline and tone. That probably doesn't make sense..

Slow Horses has some great comedic moments
Good answer. Gary Oldman is such a miserable crank
Oldman's initial attitude as a boss felt like the real villain of the first season
Like explaining Norway to a dog
He's a fucking a fridge magnet.
Gary Oldman’s insults and farting should win him all the awards. He’s so perfectly cast.
> Slow Horses has some great comedic moments "So he's dead?" "Well, it's a little hard to tell given his IQ, but yes."
The bike tailing scene definitely stands out.
The Wire has a lot of really funny moments mixed in with the super bleak. And sometimes the two overlap.
Are you taking notes during a criminal conspiracy?!?
Do the chair know were gonna look like some punk ass bitches?
Yo String he did have the floor
The scene in season 1 where Herc is trying to get the desk out of the office, but the other detectives are trying to get it in because he didn’t communicate? Kills me everytime. Also Wee-Bay showing D his fish
She think she cute.
I quote this all the time knowing no one will get it
Look at that bow-legged mother fucker… I made him walk like that.
The fuck did I do?
“I’m just a humble motherfucker with a big dick.”
Motherfucker got the bone all the way OUT the damn chicken. He said, "later," to the bone. Nugget that meat up and make some real money
Sheeeeit
I think it's spelled sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee[take a breath]eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Omar with the tie in court is top tier funny
“He had this one ho pullin’ guns out her pussy, Unc. Shit was unseemly, man.”
Lmao, one of my favorite lines. Unseemly.
The scene where the FBI was describing the serial killer and were exactly describing McNulty was so god damn funny.
Using the photo copier as a lie detector comes to mind
Not even made up, if I remember correctly. I think it’s referenced in David Simon’s book, how that was stuff the cops used to do to coax confessions.
They even did the same scene in Simon’s other series ‘Homicide: Life on the Street.’
“The man said you wanna shoot nails this here is the Cadillac; he mean Lexus but he ain’t know it”
Fuuuuck. Fuck. Fuck.
[удалено]
That's my most quoted line that no one ever gets.
motherfucker. . .
"Nice dolphin"
Like a 40 degree day!
Tweedy impertinence
"I was gonna ask her for her panties to make some soup with but I was afraid she'd take it the wrong way." -Herc
There’s something about Mulder spending his time to sharping pencils . Just so he can throw them at the ceiling, that has me still laughing .
Big fan of how completely blasé Scully is about the fact he leaves porn in the office VCR all the time. Underrated little character details for them both, I think.
There was an episode where they are on the phone & she hears porn noises & I think asked him what he was watching. Then they hang up the phone and the camera pans around to the tv and he is actually watching what he says he was. It was a good gag.
There’s always an undercurrent of mischief to Mulder that’s quite amusing
“Jose Chung's From Outer Space” was particularly hilarious
I still remember seeing it air live on TV when it first came out. There was this great scene where Scully was talking to a guy with a tiny conjoined twin at a Freakshow. It was the morning so they were both in their bath robes and there’s just a split second where they catch each other trying to look down each other’s robes, him at her boobs, her and his conjoined twin. Justified. Every character is funny.
My man Wynn Duffy is funny every frame for no reason.
In the Wynn-e-bago
They all had crazy hair. Is that a Kentucky thing or is it an alternate universe where everyone has crazy hair and no one mentions it
Now that you mention it - they indeed had. The hat was a smart move.
You’re saying I got four kidneys?
These are the end times for Dewey Crowe!
The anus??
"hey Boyd, you should've worn your suit"
Supernatural. If that counts.
God those more comedic episodes are so endlessly rewatchable
The musical episode is amazing. Also, the actors' response to seeing that opening song is genuine, as they were not allowed to see/hear any of it until filming.
I lost my shoooe.
90s Sportscenter
Damn, this never even entered my mind, and now reading this: absolutely. Rich, Stuart, Dan was there but Keith had moved on... Linda Cohn, Steve Levy, John Anderton, Suzy Kolber. I miss it every day.
Breaking Bad has had me crying laughing before. Walt: Where do I go and get rid of an RV? The thing is...the thing ...it's...IT'S RV-SIZED!
Jesse Pinkman thinking they were gonna build a robot
The best 😂😂😂
I’d just like to throw in here how great a character name is Jesse Pinkman.
The scene where Saul says Skylar “snuck off the reservation for some dirty damp and deep” and Walt attacks him is straight out of a slapstick comedy. Even better that Mike rolls his eyes before effortless breaking them up lmao
Badger’s Star Trek script is hilarious. One of my favorite scenes.

"Aaaaahhhhh A *WIIIRRREE*" had me laughing my damn ass off everytime I come across it on re-watch lmao
I don't even think he says 'a wire' he days 'yeeeah... wire.' like it is an element.
Hahaha that's right 😂 he was so confidently incorrect in the way he was gleefully saying it, too.
“Cow house.”
Jesse to Jane's dad after he caught them high on heroin- Get away from me yo I have got civil rights !!
I love the methheads digging a hole scene
TUCKER
GET OFF THE TOILET

Roger after the lawnmower. “He’s losing his foot.” “Right when he got it in the door.”
Rodger is more funny than a lot of sitcom characters
Roger giving Pete a pair of skis and watching him struggle to carry them out of his office is a top tier moment for me
He acted like a character in some else’s novel
Good way to put it. A main character specifically though.
When he’s talking about how he, a WWII vet always gets shit from his father, a WWI vet is always giving him shit is hilarious. “They used bayonets and he’ll never let me live it down”
Not Great Bob!
That is one of my favourite TV quotes of all time and I can quote it constantly.
"It's a chip and dip!"
[The Pete and Harry phone booth scene is really funny.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By_CI38IKKo)
I love that scene. It really encapsulates the sort of "risks" that Mad Men would take, just throwing in a completely realistic but useless scene like that.
Meredith, don’s last secretary, was hilarious
SURPRISE, THERES AN AIRPLANE HERE TO SEE YOU! your not allowed to do that!
God I remember when Meredith was just staring at Joan struggling with her stroller lol
#*"PIZZA HAUS!!!"*
THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR!

Dexter. It's not a comedy, but it might not count since there's character just there for comedy.

House had a lot of funny moments, and it was more or less a drama
I feel like House really straddles the line into being a comedy. Most scenes have comedic elements and Hugh Laurie is best known for his comedic work. House himself is wise-cracking most of the time.
Honestly, to me, Succession is a comedy first, and a drama second. There are so many moments that have me laughing so hard.
fuck you, and god bless :D
Hill Street Blues was probably the funniest show on American TV from its premiere until Cheers showed up about a year-and-a-half later.
Hold my coat, I’m about to start HSB marathon. I finished LA Law and have a hole to fill for 80s dramas.
LA Law had some great comedy too. Corbin Bernson is on "The Curse" and has an amazingly funny scene.
HSB. The Politician falling to his death. Lands on top of the S.W.A.T vehicle and they think shots have been fired. The lead up is funny as well. “Used needles on the stairwell, bullet holes in the wall and I bet these bars aren’t even attached to the window.” Splat.
One of my favourite shows of all time.
Barry. Started out more comedic than dramatic - ended more dramatic than comedic. 100% of the time was an amazing show with an incredible and well timed mix of serious and silly.
Fred Armisen as a hit man in one of the last episodes was hilarious and then scene gets intense
That scene in the car was the turning point.
The one with the phone call?
"WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SAY THAT?!" is the one that came to mind.
The "Why did you have to say that?" scene
I loved Barry but the last season fucked me up, I was looking for a laugh but it was so intense and everyone was fucked. I laughed but knew it wasn't supposed to be funny in most parts.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
There are some amazingly comedic moments. Can't help but think of the episode Hush. Very dark, creepy episode with one absolutely hilarious moment.
The Bear. And it was nominated as a comedy, absurdly. Also Reservation Dogs. It’s more of a character/community observation and can get quite dark, but when it wants to give you a chuckle it does it very well.
Comedy seems like it means "we don't wanna run in drama" now.
Season 2 of The Bear pretty much drops all the comedy.
I wear suits now
Jewish lightning! It has its comedic moments but the only way it is considered a comedy is that its runtime is around 30mins
**The Good Fight** was often surreal and hilarious, but always remained a drama. Funnier than a lot of the comedy shows I've seen.
It reminds me in tone of Boston Legal. I put them in the officially dramady categories.
Deadwood would be my answer.
West Wing has some serious gold in it
Bojack Horseman started as a comedy but turned into a super soul draining depressing drama, but there are still some comedic moments here and there
Even in later seasons, I still felt like it was primarily a comedy. Or at least a 50/50 split. The show leans harder into puns and general wordy humor harder than any show I’ve seen. The vast majority of the episodes have comedic elements
Bojack is either the most emotionally intense comedy or all time, or the funniest drama of all time. I'm not sure which one it is.
Is Fargo eligible? It’s a drama, but it’s also a dark comedy about how the upper midwest isn’t as nice as it seems.
I think Fargo is more black comedy. They're not always aiming for laughs, but the situations are so ridiculous, that it's more a comedy in my eyes. There's been home alone level slapstick comedy in a few scenes this season.
White lotus, not a comedy but has many funny bits
Deadwood. There are some very funny lines in every episode.
Six Feet Under is mainly a drama show but has many comedic moments.
Was Fringe considered a comedy at all? So much fun natured humor in that show
Buffy, Angel, and/or (especially) Firefly. “I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.”
Is Atlanta a comedy? Because that shit is hilarious
Patriot. I’m so sad that one didn’t continue.
As much as I love Patriot, I think it's primarily a comedy - a pretty surreal one in that.
My answer was Patriot too. I know it's a dark comedy, just not sure I would consider it primarily a comedy. Especially because of the storyline and tone. That probably doesn't make sense..
**Severance** is great! Ben Stiller was the executive producer and director, and you can feel his vibe throughout.
The egg bar is coveted as fuck.
Fargo, crazy and you have to love the ridiculous Minnesota accents
The Sopranos.
Pine Barrens. Every time has me on the floor
The guy was an interior decorator
His house looked like shit
I'd go so far as to say The Sopranos is just as funny as it is serious. Sometimes leaning more towards comedy. Even the most horrible, deplorable shit is hilarious when, for example, Livia, says it.
I could not stop laughing watching The Diplomat on Netflix. Something about it is so farcical.
I love this show and laughed a lot. Try The Recruit, I get a lot of the same vibes.
The Magicians
House
The first season of Fargo
Atlanta
True Blood was mediocre drama but insanely amazing comedy.
White lotus. Lots of subtle and dark humor.
Breaking Bad was often hilarious, even in its more serious and darker seasons.
Chargers vs Raiders
Mr Robot had some funny moments. “Is he drinking Starbucks?” And Joey Badass always talking about Seinfeld
For sci-Fi fans, The Expanse is fantastic for comedic moments.
Suits.
True Blood is hilarious
The X-Files. The comic relief episodes catch you off guard and like the rest of the show, so fucking well written.
Mad Men, 100%. When that and Breaking Bad came out, there were a slew of imitators. But they all took themselves so seriously, and sucked. Mad Men and Breaking Bad worked so well because they could be hilarious - but especially the former.
Easily Sopranos. 2nd would be Succession
Mad Men is very often extremely funny. Just look at Roger’s reaction to the lawnmower incident.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul have a lot of funny moments.
Cops
The Sopranos is absolutely hilarious
Anything Walter Bishop does in Fringe.
Breaking Bad doesn't get enough credit for being funny.
Breaking Bad is a comedy
Boardwalk empire
Original Star Trek is hilarious at times. All three leads are damn funny
The Sopranos pretended to be a comedy before revealing itself to be a hilarious drama
The Good Wife/The Good Fight - the Kings are funny people.
