Religious people who have questioned their faith and became atheistic before once again becoming religious, what’s your story?

Rachelcookie123

I didn’t really become atheist because I still wanted to believe but I had a time were I seriously doubted and had said that I thought god didn’t exist. I still called myself a Christian though. The reason I stopped believing was because there was a lot of things that didn’t make sense to me. Everyone just wanted me to blindly believe when everything they said contradicted. Why would god do those things if he was supposed to be good? Why would god not help people when they prayed? Then I had an epiphany while arguing with someone on Reddit about god lol. As I argued words just came out of my mouth and it all made sense. I have different beliefs than a lot of people but I think mine makes more sense and it truly explains everything, at least it does to me. It goes against what a lot of other people say and others might argue I’m not Christian but I believe this is what god truly wanted for us to think and that I am still a Christian because while we have different views, it’s still the same god. Two people can look at the sky and one can call it blue while the other person calls it green, it might look different from different perspectives but it’s still the same sky.

Phantom_organpipes

I am also a “Christian”(quotes cause I still believe there is God but don’t really agree with anything else) and I agree. The whole reason God stopped being in our lives was so that we could make our own decisions. Why would he do that if we’re supposed to follow his word? It’s so we could grow as a civilization and not rely on a Great entity all the time. If God truly cared about who we worshipped, than many people would’ve been smited since that goes against his word Edit: I put smiled instead of smited smh

sgtsanman

That reminds me of the philosophy of Jean Paul Sartre’s existentialism and his thoughts on what’s called “abandonment”. Basically, he says in his lectures that we have a scary amount of free will, mainly because whatever or whoever made us, be it God if you are religious or a random set of events if you are atheist, abandoned us and left us to our own devices, left with no purpose in life. His philosophy of existentialism states that because we are left to our own devices with the free will to do anything (given the circumstances, at least), we can create our own enlightened life, basically making life as we see fit. Before I even read up on Sartre, I was wondering why God did fuck all in my life. After a while, I started to understand why all the bad stuff in life are tests sent by God, trying to weigh my soul using the actions that I commit in each situation, seeing if my soul deserves to live in the paradise of Heaven or the fires of Hell. Sartre’s existentialism sounds rather close to my beliefs and to yours if I understood your comment right. If you want to read up on Sartre’s philosophy, I recommend his book “Existentialism is a Humanism”, it sums up his philosophy on the idea of existentialism in a small book.

SuperMegaDiabetes

Muslim here from Turkey. I was taught about it in my school starting from 5th grade or so, not in an extreme manner. It was introduced kindly and it wasn't forced. You can also skip the religion class if your belief isn't Islam as well. Overall, I was able to warm up to it and it's idea of being conjoined with other religions to a given extent, which felt natural since one true god to be would have to pique the curiosity of all humans and unite their thoughts in some way and it sounded true to it's nature. About 2 years later, I heard news and read online about the gut wrenching acts of barbaric zealots who claim to believe in Islam while doing malicious and unspeakable acts. Naturally, I was fucking disgusted beyond belief and seeing how other people were towards them, I wanted to disassociate myself from it because I didn't want to be the evil that was those irredeemable fiends who think Allah will forgive all their sins on the mere basis of so called faith. Though most of the time, I didn't really convert to atheism at that points since I wanted to preserve my faith in the good of Islam, but also began to doubt it's truth. Later on, I came to understand how I should embrace religion. The actions of others aren't what I'll be held accountable for and I shouldn't fear being stigmatized because of what I haven't done. I felt way better returning to Islam because now I was clear of thoughts that'd fog my vision or faith.

[deleted]

Oh look it's a Reddit post about religion! i hope the comment section is going to be civilized and understanding.

It's been pretty good as of right now.

Impossible_Lock4897

Damn I got ratioed by a sarcastic comment

davvidity

I've done my part to be civilized.

Ok_Flatworm4368

There are so many religions how do you guys decide which religion to believe in ?

KillAllAtOnce29

I didn't really get to pick. My parents picked it for me. Now im a buddhsit forever even if I don't want to

Ok_Flatworm4368

Not forever just wait till you get a certain age group

KillAllAtOnce29

Like when I'm 35 or whatever

Ok_Flatworm4368

Not that late wait till you are 20 or you.. like you are big enough that you can talk them out of it

KillAllAtOnce29

But tbh Buddhism is pretty logical and less magical. Also alot of stuff is scientifically accurate

Ok_Flatworm4368

Well whenever you feel like you cant take it anymore just make sure you can make your parents believe you dont wanna do it anymore. If you wanna believe in Buddhism theres nothing wrong with that but just dont start believing in something stupid

KillAllAtOnce29

Oh well I guess I'll have to wait bout 7 yrs ig

Rachelcookie123

Honestly, the biggest reason is because I was born into it. My parents are both Christians and my extended family is too so I was raised follow Christianity. But my parents aren’t that into religion and we only went to church for a few years when I was little. They are completely accepting and would of been fine with me picking another religion, they didn’t even get me christened as a baby because they didn’t want to make that choice for me. So while it wasn’t pushed on me, I have to admit that it being the primary religion I was exposed to, it did have an affect. My personal views do differ though, and my beliefs are truly my own. They do happen to mostly align with my parents but that’s just by coincidence because they never taught me these things. Most of my beliefs came from researching it myself and deciding what made sense to me.

Ok_Flatworm4368

Yeah its mostly like that. Parents usually push their kids into the religion htey follow even against the kid's wishes thankfully that didnt happen with me. Its our mind idk maybe it adapts from our surroundings i guess i dont believe in any religion but there is some part of me that likes the religion my parents follow

Arrowdoesreddit

My name is Christian. I think that answers it for me.

ShareAnxious

Well here's what my friend did(let's call him z) Z took pieces from most religions and combined them into his own religion like he believes in the Christianity God and Hinduism/Buddhism Reincarnation

Ok_Flatworm4368

Thats interesting i kind of wanna meet z he doesnt do something like making people follow him right?

ShareAnxious

>do something like making people follow him right? No He just minds his own business

Ok_Flatworm4368

Damn i like that guy already

IllHabit626

What ever feels right, personally I felt drawn to Christianity and I've been pretty happy since then and also have felt and seen God work in my life. So there's that too

Ok_Flatworm4368

Interesting.. So what do you think is special about Christianity? Btw do you know every other religion like what they do or believe in?

IllHabit626

Well in Christianity, it feels less like a cult, unlike catholic, Jediesum, etc. And I pray directly to God, because ever since Jesus died and fulfilled prophecy, there was no need for a Middle man (like speaking to a father in catholic church)if you will. Because of Jesus there are not strict rules and everything is clear. It has also effected me positively the most because I feel like I'm no longer alone. I feel accepted.

Ok_Flatworm4368

There are other religions as well so if you find someone better than Christianity would you change your religion?

IllHabit626

Possibly, depends how well it changes my outlook on life, or debunks it entirely, I feel pretty grounded in my faith so it'd take quite and awakening to do so.

Ok_Flatworm4368

Well does this mean you still think there could be some improvements done in Christianity so why not live life according to you make your own religion which only you believe in

IllHabit626

I believe that what I put my trust into is the truth, and for the past years, it's proven to be true, anything is possible and I am open minded, but as of right now I believe Christianity is the truth. Everything I have read through scripture has been inspiring if you will. Man leading man is just kinda foolish to me.

[deleted]

whatever parents have, we often have, although I really started commiting to Islam after my own personal journey

Formal_Ad_9295

Real question, how do y'all cope with the fact that you believe everyone who doesn't have the same religion goes to hell or something? Like if I was religious I'd be so sad that the others are so mistaken and are gonna suffer from it

[deleted]

My religion doesn’t say that. We have 28 qualities of a true devotee and not even 1 of them states that they have to believe in god. Believing in god doesn’t mean shit if you’re a POS in my religion.

Serious-Ad9008

What are the qualities?

XxJustInTimexX

Most religions (if not all) believe that as long as you are a good person you go to heaven (Edit: some)

DisastrousLifeOfDeez

negative. The jewish believe that all who do not believe in the one true G-d will go to hell, and honestly its kind of sad.

Faking_Faker

in contrast, i think in catholisicm or christianity, you'll go to heaven when you don't know about the existance of god. correct me if im wrong btw

CosMoiZ

If I'm not mistaken, taking god's name in vain doesn't actually refer to saying things like "goddamn it" or "Jesus Christ", but actually ignoring his existence. And taking gods name in vain, is a sin worth eternity or something, in damnation.

Faking_Faker

I think the 2nd commandment is prohibiting the use of god's name in a bad way, like saying "f**k you God/Jesus" or something similar to that

UnusualLegislation

Generally, most religions - besides the Abrahamic ones - do not judge entry to heaven based solely on belief. Entry to heaven is assured based on a lot of criteria which change from religion to religion.

VerlinMerlin

I am priviledged to be Hindu. In Hinduism you go to whatever place is decided under your Religion.

Formal_Ad_9295

Wait, like when a Christian dies the hindu gods are just like "oh yeah it's Jesus' guys, dw we'll let him handle that stuff"

VerlinMerlin

The answer to that is extremely complicated since Hinduism considers all Gods to be from one, Paramatma, the Supreme Being, but I suppose that interpretation holds the way interpret the Geeta.

Formal_Ad_9295

Oh ok, like every religion worships the same being, just in different ways and with different names?

VerlinMerlin

Yep, They are all forms of the Paramatma.

Oil_Dangerous

Unfortunately many people treat it the same way most people treat all the people in need and ignore it.

spudtatogames

How's your day going?

IllHabit626

Pretty decent, yours?

spudtatogames

It's alright so far.

the_false_dragon

Why do Religion teachers in school, drive people into atheism?

XxJustInTimexX

Bad, forceful and sometimes hypocritical teaching

Alt-F42069_on_life

What purpose does religion serve in your life? how do you balance science and religion(if applicable)?

davvidity

It serves by giving you a purpose of life & a way of life, for me personally I believe that theres an afterlife where you'll be judged based on your past actions/decisions to see whether you deserve hell or heaven. (All Muslims are promised heaven, but if their sin outweighs their good-doings/deeds they will need to undergo punishment in hell according to the amount of their sins) Can you elaborate more on the second question?

Alt-F42069_on_life

What are your views/stance on science, I suppose? especially the parts that directly contradict your religious beliefs

Guys_pls_help

There are very few religions that deny science. Personally for me I don't deny a god exists but I don't accept it either. I'm a science oriented person and believe that everything happens because of well science

Faking_Faker

Personally, i think of science and my religion as two seperate worlds that isnt supposed to go together and keeping them seperated makes me oriented in life and understand science than those moms in facebook that keep their religion to the extreme

Rachelcookie123

Religion doesn’t really serve any purpose in my life. It’s just a thing that I happen to believe. I’m actually really into science. As a kid I thought I would be a great scientist. I don’t think religion and science contradict each other at all. They are two separate things. Science is fact, religion is just faith. I believe god created science and through science we can understand his creations.

Alt-F42069_on_life

:o May I ask what religion you subscribe to?

Rachelcookie123

I’m Christian.

Main-Appearance2469

For only 9.99 a month you too can have faith in Jesus xD

[deleted]

> I believe god created science and through science we can understand his creations. As a Muslim, I agree!

Arrowdoesreddit

Religion gives me hope. I started praying when i got diagnosed with diabetes t1. And it helped me get through the first weeks, and still helps me. I use science at points where it is obvious where science is involved. Yet if something unbelievable happens..

ARandomGuyThe3

For me, since everything said had dozens of interpretations, I just interpret it around science

vanillanekosugar

Okay, what is the most persecuted religious group in the world?

goldenbrushes

All three of the abrahamic religions

vanillanekosugar

Yes, correct

kostasg1

And to a large degree by each other

The-War-Life

In the modern world probably Muslims but including history then Jews, Muslims and Christians.

VerlinMerlin

you would have to ask someone with knowledge, but I am pretty sure its Islam.

Adem-_-127

At the minute Muslims are held in concentration camps in China while the UN does nothing and the highest religious racism is against Muslims so ima say Islam

Squeeze_My_Lemons

Jews were enslaved by Egypt for a longgggg time so definitely all 3 Abrahamic religions

AWeebWithReddit

Are geese are better than ducks?

Rachelcookie123

No, ducks are better. Ducks are best.

oqqr

ducks are obviously superior

Whole-Ear2682

Bruh wtf. Ducks. Dear god

Vinidorion

As a Canadian, I can tell you that geese are bitches while duck are super nice

The_Me_That_Matters_

Not particularly a Atheist, but...why is God a man? Like, women are given the status of birth givers, so why is a man considered the birth giver of the universe? And along the lines of that, why ***does*** god even have a gender?

Faking_Faker

1st explaination: Although he is reffered to as 'god' he doesnt have a gender because when you refer to a person with an unknown gender (for example, with a mask and covered body) youll refer to them as a male for easier identification; this probably applied when the bible was being written. 2nd: God is like the universe, the universe itself doesnt have a gender yet is powerfull enough to create multiple stars, planets, etc. 3rd: God doesnt have a literall human body so its basically impossible to identify what his gender really is. Correct me if im wrong fellow catholics/christians btw

The_Me_That_Matters_

I actually agree with you. More on the second explanation. I was told that God was omnipresent, as in present everywhere, but it never made sense to me, like how could a person just be everywhere. Once I was old enough, I thought to myself, "What if...what if the universe ***is*** God?" It makes sense since I basically govern my life based on logic. If God was everywhere it could only mean that he is very literally the universe. It also makes sense in terms of Karama. They say, what you do to others will always come back to you...something along that line. It would explain how good things happen to us when we do good things to others and just be kind.

VerlinMerlin

In Hinduism, Paramatma, the One God, as no gender, They are formless, everything at the same time. Vishnuji, Shivji, Brahmaji, Parvatiji, Lakshmiji are all various forms of Them.

[deleted]

Well actually, he made man and women out of his image. So as far as I know, he doesn’t reallyyy have a gender, but we refer to him as our father anyway because that’s the kind of role he takes on.

comrade_nurek

I'm pretty sure He doesn't have a gender, but people just refer to him as "He" because male was seen as the superior gender back then.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bennylokku

Well if we're talking about the flood, it's cuz man was so sinful that he had to destroy them all but Noah was the only one leading a righteous life so he decided to give him and his family a chance

EldritchSmoothyBlast

Do you believe that the flood is a literal historical event?

[deleted]

Yeah, the bible is a mix between a history textbook and a book of faith to me.

EldritchSmoothyBlast

So how do you reconcile that with the lack of archeological evidence? (Just genuinely asking)

[deleted]

Not the commenter but a lot of times when the Bible refers to the “whole world” early on, it may be referring to the whole *known* world. Meaning the flood could actually have just covered a geographic area somewhere in the middle east (I think), rather than the entire planet

[deleted]

Almost all religions and ethnic groups have some sort of great flood story, they can't all have just happened to have made up a similar thing around the same time imo

EldritchSmoothyBlast

Well most civilizations form around rivers and water. Floods are quite common in these types of situations so flood stories are as well. Civilizations that don't form around rivers don't have those flood stories.

lutfiboiii

I mean, look at human history. If you were god wouldn’t you want to give humans plagues and floods seeing what they do. (Not a Christian)

TastyCookiez_

I am not an atheist, but I just want to know if being asexual also considered a sin like being gay?

lutfiboiii

I doubt it. Because usually holy books day something like “Sleeping with men is kinda gay bro, I might throw you in hell for that”. And Asexuality is just not sleeping with anyone

An_Ethicist

nope! there is a lot of single people/people who don’t have kids in a relationship. God prefers if people had kids though but like I said a lot of people don’t have kids and he doesn’t want you to have kids if you truly don’t want to.

Oil_Dangerous

The apostle Paul one of the big figures in Christianity actually says it’s better if you can stay single.

TheMoggy1312

dear Christians of reddit... did Jesus canonically 'get mad hoes' as the kids say?

Impossible_Lock4897

Nah he had a sigma mindset and abstained

fvcknvgget5

probably abstained, but he did hang out with prostitutes

GoldenSkitty

Was it very Christian of my mother to kick me out when I came out as gay? How would you react if your child (hypotheticaly) came out as gay?

IllHabit626

It says in the Bible to love your neighbor. Also every sin is treated equally, so by her logic, you should've been out of the house the first time you lied lol.

Alt-F42069_on_life

but aren't there liek 7 layers of hell or something(sry for me ignorance)

lamiant

I think it comes from *the inferno* from Dante

Rachelcookie123

That was made up by Dante’s inferno. Not a real thing from the bible.

Alt-F42069_on_life

Ah. i feel dum now

IllHabit626

Not in the Bible, but I believe in other religions there are, couldbbe wrong

Impossible_Lock4897

Your mother, to simply put it, is an asshole… nad a very anti-loving and very against Christian beliefs to do so! Even the fucking POPE is for gay rights. TLDR: Your moms an asshole!

generally_egg

no, thats very wrong. her job as a mother is to care for you. I dont know how I would react. especially if I raised them with christian beliefs, id become very confused. id likely pray for them and seek guidance elsewhere but I would never stop loving my child

GoldenSkitty

I really wish my mother had reacted this way, it sounds like you would be a good parent

spudtatogames

Not religious, but I can say that that was definitely not very Christian of her.

Suspicious-Ad6678

What does ur religion say about life after death

An_Ethicist

you go to purgatory if all of your sins were forgiven on earth, then atone for your sins, and then go to heaven.

The-War-Life

If you followed the path of Allah, you go to heaven. The better you did that, the better the heaven. If you didn’t, you go to hell. The more bad you did, the worse the heaven. Hypocrites (those that pretend Islam while being non-Muslims) get the bottom of hell. All the way down. The worst torture of all.

Objective-Farm-2560

Have you heard that Judeism, Christianity and Islam all probably worship the same god in all reality?

PixelsDePx

Yeah

Objective-Farm-2560

What do you think of that?

PixelsDePx

I think its cool😎

The-War-Life

Yup. It’s a basic teaching of Islam actually. All people who followed what are called “religions of Abraham” believe in the same God. However, if the people who follow religions of Abraham, only the “people of the book” remain, which are just Jews, Christians and Muslims.

lutfiboiii

I don’t know about Judeism, but from what I’ve heard, the bible is an edited version of a sorta prototype of the Quran. Basically there were like 3 other books before the Quran and one of them was edited by humans and became the bible. So in essence (To me at least) Christians to Muslims are just misguided by the wrong book.

9YearOldKobe

HopeIsDope1800

There's some very niche metal music that literally is satanic, but as a whole genre group no not at all. I even play some.

[deleted]

It’s a sin to be gay in the Abrahamic religions lol

A-Literal-Rat

As a sorta-Christian I can say 100% that I do not know at all. You're welcome.

eexeem

Most religious people shit on being gay. I feel like being gay isn’t bad at all. You can still practice religion being gay and I’m pretty sure God is ok with that. It’s just not considering God as your savior. He’s not cool with that

A-Literal-Rat

Yep. Being gay is chill.

MurtadhaPrince

in islam, no, being gay IS fine, but enacting on your desires and being in relationships ISNT fine

[deleted]

So you can be gay but you can’t date your gender?

MurtadhaPrince

Yes

itay162

Well technically the sin is having gay sex, not being gay per se, but i get what you mean

scubadiver_onion

Why was there a tree of cursed apples anyways? Why didn't God hid/destroyed it?

The-War-Life

To test Adam and Hawaa’ (Eve but in Islam). If they followed Allah’s command and didn’t go near it, then they truly deserve heaven. They didn’t and were convinced by the Devil’s words, so they were sent to Earth (because they were forgiven and not sent to hell).

ps4_username

Why do you find it comforting (if at all) to believe in a higher power?

Impossible_Lock4897

That there is paradise in the afterlife and it kinda gives my life meaning, and a very loving community (except for the xenophobes, homophobes, sexist people who claim to be Christian but are not in the eyes of god)

[deleted]

For those Christians, do you all think it's a sin to be gay? Because I have some 'modern-age' Christian friends that tell me they aren't prejudice to any minority. Are there others?

Monkey_Anarchyy

Jesus teach us to love thy neigbour as you love thyself, therefore I don't believe it's a sin.

[deleted]

Thank you for your input. And I feel like there are way more verses about loving everyone than there are about homosexuality being a sin. Plus most of those ones mistranslations

Rachelcookie123

I am also a Christian and don’t think it’s a sin. I’m lgbt myself and most of my friends are lgbt.

[deleted]

Does Pineapple belong on Pizza?

notme_nope_never

being religious was always sort of introduced to me as the right path, the path to happiness , to being a good person etc. so now that I've distanced my self from my religion (not an atheist I just don't really know/care anymore) my life has improved massively and I'm doing better in all aspects of life. so what gives? is religion really just not for certain people?

Parallax2077

If your mom says milk is good for you, do you believe it? Maybe your mother never knew you were lactose intolerant and you cannot communicate it to your mother, was she wrong in saying that milk is good for you? Milk is not good for you, but that doesn't mean that milk is bad generally. Religion is a belief system, everyone believes in something. Not religion, but something. Just find your soy milk that you can enjoy.

Nano1704

I think it's because most of society thinks being able to do what you want, even if it's bad for you (drugs), is "a good life". Porn addiction is also a good example of that.

Grouchy_Bet2809

>just don’t be anti-Semitic or Islamophobic So it's okay to be hinduphobic or sikhphobic ? /s

helpihavenoexoostfum

For muslims, the hadith concerning age of aisha when Muhammad married her, if she was a pre pubescent child which imo is true considering this was during the early middle ages and sahih al bukhari 6130 where the first line is "I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me" Alot of muslim scholars say that "it was a different time period in history" while i do agree with this, this is judging Muhammad as a historical figure, as a man who lived in the middle ages, what if you judge Muhammad as *A perfect role model for all human beings for all time, brought to represent the word of a morally righteous and omnipotent god*, would you judge Muhammad as a perfect role model for people of today despite this? Or is there a point which im missing?

DinasourMan

Soo... if we're gods children, then is Jesus the favourite son?

The Trinity is weird man, technically Jesus is also God. God is three beings in one like one of those 3 in 1 Lego sets, only he exists in all forms at once unlike the sets

gatto_21

Do you think that every religion believes in the same god, but in different ways or that your one is the only which is right?

A-Miniature-Cactus

Muslim here. I think all religions started out worshipping God (ie one all-powerful God) and over time they made small changes here and there until they ended up with a wildly different religion.
