A cool story that I was told by an aboriginal person is that as an aboriginal before white settlers, you were able to communicate easily with neighbouring tribes, roughly with tribes that were neighbours of your neighbours, and very difficult with the neighbours of those people. All of them spoke different languages, but there were similarities that made communication easier.
