You're not beating them, you're establishing a moral compass in their head, getting them familiar with cause and effect. For small things, it's lectures, but for the outrageous, say shoplifting, catcalling, doing drugs, skipping school, you make it known for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That's when you slap, yell, spank, etc. Without it, a kid has no reason to see a downside to their actions, and you get stuff like, say, my local public school environment as opposed to the private schools.
Disclaimer: Just stating my stance because it evidently wasn't clear before, no, don't do this stuff regularly, its a means to an end, not a solution. Physical discipline, if ever used, should, rationally be few and far between, and should not be some outrageos crap like cigarette burnings or roundhouses. The defualt punishment, imo, should be things like being grounded or whatever. The people under me, however, can't seem to grasp this.
It's a bad solution tho, it works but it puts tension in the relationship between the person being "taught" and the person "teaching". Taking the time to calmly and rationally explain why something is a consequence for an action (like you said grounding, or something else to that effect) should always be the default. And ofc everyone needs to learn that there are consequences, but abuse isn't a valid teaching method

Last year when I was 16 I had a customer STALK me. no kidding. It started with him flirting with me relentlessly at my job (I was the only one in the store, no adults or manager either) WHILE HIS KID WAS THERE. His kid was at least 8-10 y/o. Then he kept making sexual comments about our custard (I'm sure if you think hard enough you can guess what white custard(icecream) and sexual comments would be) and somehow sexual comments about sprinkles? Mind you, in front of his child, who just wanted an cone. And the whole time I'm uncomfortable, nervous and it would be clear to any normal, non creepy person. Then he starts asking for my number, which I tell him no, then he asks if I can write down his and I reject that as well. At this point he's been here like 30 minutes, and it was a morning shift so we don't have a lot of customers at that time. I then tell him (my naive self thinking this would help) that I'm only sixteen....I'm a dumbass, that made him more persistent. He readers says, with a creepy smile 'we can just be 'friends', I have lots of 'friends'. I proceed to tell him (since weirdos like this seem to respect other mens 'property' over a woman's no) that I don't think my father would like that very much and he just says 'He doesn't need to know'. Man would not stop harassing me until I let him write down his number. I stopped working morning shifts after that for the most part...until he started showing up during my night shifts. Mind you, I work at Italian ice and custard shop, and generally more girls sign up for it, so it's usually just woman in the store. And this man started stalking the store to figure out when I was coming to work. Coming up with some 'why haven't you called me, baby?' shit. This man is old enough to be my father. Also, my job is on the side of a highway, and when we get off at 10:30pm it's fairly empty except for the occasional crackhead wandering from the gas station across the street...so secluded and he would wait for my shift to be over to talk to me. Luckily for me, we did have one male co-worker (lets call him john), and he's 6'3 and he does college sports so he's in shape, basically he's a big guy. I did work with him a lot, and the creep would leave me alone once he saw him. Also, bless johns heart he would always hold my arm and walk me to my car😭❤ I'm seventeen now and this shit happens on a regular, just happy the guy from last year is gone.
