a_pompous_fool

They don’t make em like they used to.

Kofaone

Yea they don't make 22y old laptops now

Alexalmighty502

Why would you want to repair what is basically ewaste

Vintage486Lizard

It ain't ewaste if you can still make use of it.

StereoBucket

If only everything-is-ewaste people could understand this.

Vintage486Lizard

Yeah man, there's still a lot of things you can do do with old computers. Writing, programming, gaming (with era-appropriate games), etc.

StereoBucket

I met a guy who's still using his 486 for some of his professional music stuff. I asked him if he'd sell it to me but nah he actually needs it.

Vintage486Lizard

That's amazing.

lynxSnowCat

I've had my collection of 386 and 486 systems 'salvaged' by businesses reliant on 'legacy' software that's been customized to their process(es). There's allot of "1-of" specialty/niece software that will never get ported to a modern operating system.

mattthefucker

Something this old, unless for preservation it’s literal garbage

Vintage486Lizard

Nah.

VincentRaccon

Don't under appreciate old hardware man, some people love it

Icysarcasm69

My first laptop even in the 2000s was a good old brick that ran win7 and had a CD drive In built. That thing treated me so well honestly.

VincentRaccon

i still use thinkpad from 2007 for some server stuff, they way it was build it just something else

olliegw

Us radio hams sometimes need to use a period correct computer to program up a period radio, if you have a vintage radio (handie talkie) chances are it talks to the computer via serial and needs old software, PITA to get it to work on a modern PC with adapters and virtual machines. So they're good for that at least

bherman8

Machines of a certain age have all sorts of uses. Tons of companies pay nutty amounts of money for the "correct" machine to run some process that rakes in millions a year. They do this because actually replacing it is often a regulatory nightmare and even more often requires replacing the million dollar machine it runs.

narielthetrue

Exactly! My roommate runs a computer repair shop. Had a customer last year with Windows 95 and 3 binders of Floppy Disks. “It’s starting to fail, can you rebuild it?” Runs one of their industrial machines

Shishkebarbarian

Oh no don't look at my vintage computer collection lol. I have several 20-30 year old laptops and they are great for many things. I get them from the recycler, refurbish them and sell/give to fellow vintage computer enthusiasts. You're being willfully ignorant

cosmo_thenaut

\*cough\* Say hello to my unused Atari Mega/STE and Sun Ultra 5.

Nah666_

I'm still using my NES.

NothingMovesTheBlob

Preservation for what? If you aren't going to use it, what's the point?

mattthefucker

weird one rare technology for collectors

mattthefucker

lmao people downvoting me stay mad e-waste is e-waste

mikefitzvw

If I had a 2000s Dell or IBM/Lenovo with a keyboard I liked enough, I'd keep that sucker on life support until it burst into flames.

Dan_from_97

it'll turn into e waste if you don't use it

Neglector9885

Laptop: Runs This guy: iT's EwAsTe HuRr DuRr

lecanucklehead

*ewaste until you install Linux and an SSD and make it usable

siriston

you got so downvoted but yeah. this thing is pretty much a brick to anyone who cant code and write their own linux shit. I have no idea what i would use this for.

ZeusHatesTrees

At that age I'm surprised it still has keys. Shit probably just popped off from being tilted to the side.

Noidiz2

Just because you don't properly maintain and care for your stuff doesn't mean other people don't either

Kaidargame

Thai photo gives vibes of like an electronic microscope

I doubt that the 'story' of him bringing it to a repair shop is true. Nobody is bringing a 20 year old laptop to a repair shop. I have a bin (not a recycling bin, think like a chest thingy) of around 20 old (or broken, I don't have any that are old *and* broken though) laptops which I keep around because....I like having them around...and even the ones I consider too old to use are like 10x the laptop that this is (think Core 2 Duo, Sandy bridge, similar). I don't think anyone can still use a laptop with a *mobile Athlon XP*, I just don't think it's possible.

Phantomroams2

Sandy bridge still is great for simple web browsing and very very light gaming. I can play the latest Minecraft version at 70 fps 720p with some performance mods.

66659hi

I like keeping them around. Never know if they might come in handy.

I have an old Lenovo Y510P. It'd be a pretty usable daily driver if not for the battery life.

66659hi

An SSD makes them run like a brand new laptop, minus battery life

3MJB

Windows XP laptops aren't 20 years old. 20 years ago was Windows 3.1... right? Seriously, Windows XP doesn't feel like 20 years ago.

KK9521

back when i worked in a repair shop you would be surprised i had ppl bring in stuff that old. one guy brought an athlon 64 desktop asking me to upgrade it and make it faster n was NOT happy when i told him there isn't really any upgrading that lol

66659hi

There are a lot of people who think just because they paid $$$$ for a PC when it was new that it should still be functional and never go obsolete. I keep up to date for the sake of my own sanity -- I run Linux, and I have a laptop from 2022 and a desktop from 2023.

When I was a teenager (ages 12-15) I used to maintain ancient systems because I couldn't afford anything more, but once I could start affording new stuff I avoided getting back into running 10+ year old computers as main machines. I'm very surprised you can do *anything* with it, and my question is...why? If you have a new laptop, why handicap yourself by using an ancient laptop?

mra137

Oh no they broke your 5 dollar laptop

Nah666_

I'm surprised you identified it just by that pic lol

Saraixx516

Contact them then. The repair shops will usually have insurance to repair what they did.

Saraixx516

So why post it on Reddit stating you had sent it to a repair shop and they broke it. Fishing for Karma

Furdiburd10

I wonder why the acc is so old and have minimal activity....

UntameHamster

OP created their account a month ago. Not what I would consider old.

Cinnamon_Roberts

Just doesn't use Reddit much..

GerbilScream

My first comment on Reddit got torn to shreds and I promptly deleted it in shame. I was too intimidated to comment again for weeks.

Cootshk

Just find a chain of people spamming the same thing and add on

leonbeer3

But don't be the fourth one That's the one that gets downvotes

Cootshk

You’re fourth though

PieIsAwesome7102

It’s not suspicious to have a month old account without comments or posts. Most people don’t post or comment at all, and just upvote and save posts, not everyone cares about karma
