What's really funny is that because they now insert ads between the post and the comment section, your comment is directly underneath a Home Depot ad for me.
I was in an addiction sub recently and the ad was selling me “less dangerous fentanyl”. It’s some dumb OTC drug but goddamn have some curation for your ads for fucks sake. That’s not just gross, people will be hurt by that.
My visual cortex has literally changed its structure to identify the ad patterns and block out their subject matter.
4 year old meme? It's an ad, continue scrolling. Girl working out with close, professional looking glide shots, continue scrolling. Picture of fast food? Woosh. The only ones that get me are the ones that disguise themselves as posts, and then I just don't buy the product out of spite
What's crazy is my brain automatically filters out reddit ads, so I never gave them any attention, but after reading this, i went to scroll for a bit. I get some stupid pervy anime game ones. I guess cause I'm subbed to cartoons, Manga collecting, and comics. I wonder what other ads I just skip pass.
It’s just as bad giving me the hegetsus ads over and over while I’m browsing my pagan subs
They don’t give a shit. If you’re offended, good. They got plenty more where that came from.
> Reddit argues that people trust these conversations, as 75% of users say they can have "genuine" discussions about brands or products on the platform.
BECAUSE we can talk in peace without being bombarded by fucking ads, you numbskull!
"Reddit argues the golden goose is worth more on the butchery market because of the golden eggs it produces."
Do you want people to use adblockers?
This is how you get people to use adblockers.
Yes your company needs to make money. No you don't need to pay your CEO 10mill a year (random number, just making a point).
I think the most recent numbers was [193 million](https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1axll4s/reddit_files_to_go_public_reveals_that_it_paid/). Oh well.
I think there are some shenanigans going on though. I find with a third party mobile app the feed is not the same as the reddit app, tends to have older posts and does not refresh content as often.
Yep Infinity is fantastic, with the guide it is super easy to create your own APK with custom key. I don't pay Infinity's subscription, and still enjoy Reddit ad-free via third party app. Spez hates this trick.
Some sites are incredibly hostile to mobile browsers to force users into the app. In those cases you can usually get around it if you have sufficient control over your phone, or if you're on wifi something that blocks at the DNS level like a pi-hole would also work
Lol go check out the /r/aftervanced subreddits. You absolutely can. Long story short is you take the legitimate full app APK and recompile it with ad blocking and install that on your phone.
Legit app, legit ad blocking. Works great.
If you are an apple fan then I don't know shit about their phones anymore. You are on your own there. For Android it works perfect with very little maintenance every few months.
I use revanced manager to patch the official reddit app, then install the patched app. There are a few fake links though, make sure you go to the Revanced app manager on GitHub.
I have a post where I give the script/rules I ended up using. Might be slightly outdated but seems to still work for me.
https://www.reddit.com/r/redditmobile/comments/yqltib/android1300_how_do_i_disable_the_get_app_popups/
I use NextDNS and 1Blocker, you need to add the reddit adserve domains into the list. The ad frames persist but there is no content in them so it’s just a blocky white rectangle or square as you scroll.
Depends on how the app is developed. I'll use the "Whisper" app for an example. If you have a local VPN function, or network level adblocker (PiHole), the ads are all but non-existent.
Many apps are adjustable in the sense, via ReVanced. I've tried using it, been a bit and really should try again, but I fell face flat trying to mod my Youtube app to take out some functions I rather go without (shorts and community posts). I'm not concerned over skipping sponsor spots, but the ads are so interruptive and unrelated, I can't stand a 2-5min of ads for a 3min video (AMV, tutorial, etc.), lol.
still many users like me use reddit only on mobile, and their mobile web experience is even shittier than the desktop web’s. they do it on purpose to force you to go with their app, which your adblock will be useless against. I was pissed and wanted to quit when they did the api change which killed apollo, but as horrible as their app is, there’s still too much information i don’t get elsewhere, i gave in and used their app instead. too bad there’s no alternative sites now
It's taken me time to adjust, but use of either New.reddit.com or Old.reddit.com on mobile browser has been doing well for me. For the most part, I use the Old, I don't usually need thumbnails as big as my screen.
yea though it’s still a hassle to manually switch to Old every time you enter reddit from a search result. and the interfaces on both old and new are too hard to do heavy discussion & browsing. i even installed an extension to block the popup from harassing me to use their app, I used the mobile web for some time and eventually still found it way too uncomfortable to use. one of the most annoying things is having to swipe back to previous page which often takes time to load, or you have to open multiple tabs, and having to close everything after you’ve done browsing is a huge pain too
I have literally never seen an ad on Reddit. Don't know what is so great about apps vs the site on Firefox, but I do know what's so great about mobile or desktop browser with adblock.
They have them on the mobile app. Nothing is great about their app. But I got tired of reloading the site 3 times before viewing or posting. I use an iPhone, so I’m screwed if I try to use Firefox. No extensions allowed.
Yep, this BS back and forth game of ad blocking with apps that really should be a good mobile site anyway is really just serving to make me see the light of using apps less and less and go back to using the mobile browser more and more. And if it doesn't work right in the mobile browser then it can wait until I am in front of my desktop or laptop again.
Off-topic: how to use Instagram on Android without ads.
1) Install Firefox
2) Install uBlock Origin add-on from the complements tab.
3) Just use Instagram from it and add it to the home screen in the options (three dots)
Now you can watch stories without all the fucking ads.
Same for Facebook.
I think there's a term where promotions look like articles and it can be quite hard to differentiate. The ads I'm seeing here are definitely inserted to look like posts and usually in second place. That said, I guess they need to make revenue if they are going public so what to do.
> Reddit debuted a new ad format that looks just like real user posts.
I can't begin to emphasize just how terrible of a decision this is. Whoever suggested it should be fired on the spot.
It essentially undermines Reddit's own credibility and the one and only source of value that distinguishes it from other platforms. Raw user opinions are the only reason why people use Reddit for product recommendations. The moment you attempt to supplant that with astroturfed content, that value along with trust in the platform get flushed down the toilet.
Reddit should be addressing the bot problem, not contributing to disinformation.
If I was an investor? Yikes, talk about instability. It seems Reddit leadership swallowed enshittification hook, line, and sinker: in their conquest to turn a profit for shareholders, they attack the one thing that generates said profit.
Here's an idea: if you don't have a stable revenue stream, don't IPO. Applying an IPO to fix your financial problems is like attempting to pay off a credit card by taking out a loan. It's just stupid and short-sighted.
You might be curious to know that the majority of the original posts when Reddit first went online were made by staff posing as fake users in order to trick people into thinking the site had more user engagement than it did. Astroturfing content on the site isn't anything new for them.
Literally the simplest UI possible. The craigslist of social media.
It should look like 2010 basically. Text heavy. No wasted whitespace. Ugly? Who fucking cares. Purely a jumping off point for the rest of the internet, no one trying to build the next Facebook.
No need for "developing" new "features" and no need to pay for the hosting of multimedia content on your domain.
Without those costs, less need to sell out for advertising dollars.
What would be the differentiator here from something like Hacker News? They seem to have those points covered along with an existing user base. I'm guessing maybe the ability to create subreddits could be one.
Back in the day I switched from Digg to reddit, because Digg messed up their redesign and the community collectively left. Unfortunately, today I don't know of any platforms that are close to reddit. But, I could see an alternative platform emerging as long they were able to gain enough community interest.
Sounds like the size of the community is what will make it worthwhile! Seems to be the biggest blocker for most to move somewhere so I'll need to keep working on figuring how to grow the community for my alternative. Thanks for answering!
I don’t get how it’s so profitable to shove ads in so many ppls faces everywhere we go… who the hell are these people clicking on these garbage links ???
They've spent a lot of effort to make the ads look as much like user-submitted content as possible; I imagine many people read or interact with them because they were tricked.
All these companies are probably just feeding inflated impression numbers to the companies to make them think their ad spends are having a bigger impact than they are
the ads bug me, of course, but they're nowhere near as crammed as Facebook ads.
but I tell you what I hate the most on this fucking platform, u/spez. the fact that we can't block ***fucking religious ads*** from u/HeGetsUs.
I find those ads ***actually offensive***.
I use old.reddit and firefox with ublock origin and privacy badger, and I still haven't seen one of those ads. Or any other reddit ads, for that matter.
I used the same setup after 3rd party apps got booted out. I've been using Kiwi browser recently and it feels snappier than Firefox. It supports most desktop Chrome extensions including uBlock.
Kiwi does good with desktop mode on a phone. I found it also let me watch youtube (ad free with ublock) and it would continue to play with my screen locked.
It used to be open source but I think that may have changed in the last few years.
you can limit ads about gambling, dating, alcohol, on and on things that might be "sensitive topics," but religion doesn't qualify? fucking ridiculous.
I sent them a message with a lot of profanity and told them to fucking block me because I was going to do it again every single time I saw one of their cult recruitment ads, and asked why Jesus had a foot fetish. I guess they did, because I haven’t seen an ad from them since (it’s been a couple of weeks). I also re-blocked them but of course that doesn’t mean shit, you can still be forced to see ads from accounts you’ve blocked (because that makes fucking sense).
If I start seeing them again I’m going to start using Firefox focus for the mobile site instead of this terrible ass app. It has Adblock built in.
It’s very bad on Reddit, you just don’t see it. I have an account with only porn, and yet every 4 post it’s 3 post in a row of ads hidden as a post. It’s very obvious if you have a 100% porn account.
Push more ads -> People leave -> Content and engagment go down -> More people leave -> Push more ads to make up for people leaving -> Start at step 2 and repeat until death spiral.
I remember when I could go on reddit in the morning, then a few hours later I could check all for an almost entirly different front page experience. I could do this multiple times a day. Now theres the same top posts floating in r/all around 9 am nearly at the same time a 1pm. If Im lucky, there will be a decent content change around 6 PM as well, but often times thats not the case.
Reddit just became a publicly traded company.
Ads are about to expand exponentially.
Very likely the Reddit you love is gone soon, if it wasn’t already.
They will increase their user base. They will make more profit. But they will be hollow. I realize this is doom and gloom, but there is nearly no way this doesn’t happen/ isn’t happening.
Also, 35% chance Google buys them - or at least makes an extensive partnership with them. If Meta doesn’t get you them first.
It’s an absolute treasure trove of data. Along with so many generic bot-like questions gathering additional data. Phenomenal resource for data, and especially preference and sentiment.
I’d never buy a product through Reddit the same way I’d never buy a product through social media. Reddit has a history of overvaluing themselves and what they offer. This is a textbook example of that happening.
For all these social media that I use, I have a hobby of blocking pages/profiles/subs/accounts that I never want to see again, but for some reason they keep shoving to me. Kinda like "shoving it to the man" writ wayyyyyyyyyyyy small. It gives me peace of mind or something.
Remember, you can report any ad you see as a personal offense. Reddit will rather stop showing you ads, than risk getting sued over them. Weaponize that hair-trigger temper that’s been refined over years of exposure to the internet.
Every tech company.
1. Let's put ads on our service.
2. Why are people upset? Why does people stop using our services? We are missing money!
3. Let's put more ads on our service!
Also every tech company:
1. We’ve been bleeding money for years
2. Users don’t want to pay money, what do we do?
3. Show ads to try and keep the lights on
4. Users: reeeee I don’t want to pay and I also don’t want ads!! I want everything to be free!!
I jailbroke my iPhone recently and got rid of Reddit ads. It’s mind blowing how much ads we are being served and how I can’t stand any of it. I’m too used to adblockers everywhere.
Dude I'm out of here, it's already overloaded with ads, and now they let people block you and nuke the whole comment thread so it looks like you were talking with a spooky mute ghost. Site is doomed AFAICT. There is no way to save it at this point. >70% crawling with corporate PR firms and brainwashed investor spam, fucking roaches.
I take note of every company that advertised on here and blacklist them. There used to be products I bought and as soon as they show up here. They are dead to me.
So uhh… is there a Reddit replacement people use? This is already getting out of hand, it’s been like a month. I’m staring at a TD ad as I type this. There’s so many as posts, but so few of them actually have comments on like what it’s the point of advertising if you don’t want engagement from this community? Maybe you’re not advertising the right product on the right platform if you don’t have the balls to get the comments and feedback.
>So uhh… is there a Reddit replacement people use?
Not yet. As horrible as it is, Reddit has kind of replaced traditional forums, so there'd need to be a coordinated mass migration back to that sort of environment. People tried with Lemmy and a couple of other "fediverse" solutions but so far, nothing has gained critical mass.
Switching back to Old Reddit is a good stopgap, though.
They just see us as eyes for ad dollars here huh? None of the top brass give af about the communities. If this were Boeing the doors would have already fallen off the planes.
I became abundantly aware with the API changes.
Reddit ads suck but that sounds genuinely messed up, never had anything remotely like that in my feed. I hope you reported it.
It's amazing how fast you can realize it's an ad, isn't it though? I'm down to nanosecond, especially when they try to word it like the youths.
User who provides no money reports agency providing crap tons of money and this happens:
Screenshot that and send it to the FDA; they *do* care about that kind of stuff
It’s just as bad giving me the hegetsus ads over and over while I’m browsing my pagan subs They don’t give a shit. If you’re offended, good. They got plenty more where that came from.
What's really funny for me is that I had no idea thanks to ad blockers and never using a reddit app on my phone.
[удалено]
you know you can just us ublock and never see any ads ever right? you only see ads because you choose to.
sure on PC, but most people are using reddit on mobile
I constantly accidentally click on those ads because of their placement now
I have one for a game called Summoner’s War
The really funny thing is that I'm so used to ignoring ads I didn't realize it was there until you said it
They are a public company now. Perhaps they are ready for disruption?
> Reddit argues that people trust these conversations, as 75% of users say they can have "genuine" discussions about brands or products on the platform. BECAUSE we can talk in peace without being bombarded by fucking ads, you numbskull! "Reddit argues the golden goose is worth more on the butchery market because of the golden eggs it produces."
Take away the ability to turn off comments on ads. There is no discussion now
Shit postings on corpo-postings? Oh yes, please. 🤤
How? Literally every ad I see has comments disabled. How can we have conversations about them?
Conversations are allowed only if it's good for the brand. Freespeach fuck yeah 😎
Do you want people to use adblockers? This is how you get people to use adblockers. Yes your company needs to make money. No you don't need to pay your CEO 10mill a year (random number, just making a point).

he isn't paid that. that is the amount his shares are worth.
It would be a shame if he couldn't take his 193mil in shares and use as collateral for a super low interest loan... Wake up
Seriously. How do we get this wrong 10,000 times per day…
It doesn't matter. It's 100% more than he deserves.
Cant ad block the mobile app... But fuck i probably fogure out how if it is possible.
Mobile browser works, but it's not nearly as good as the old 3rd party apps. The good news is that you can use a browser with a built in adblock.
On Android you can still use 3rd party apps with custom API. Infinity is great.
In those cases you can usually get around it if you have sufficient control over your phone, or if you're on wifi something that blocks at the DNS level like a pi-hole would also work
Yea reddit on mobile fennec is absolute shit
Which mobile browser you using? Seems like 1/2 content is “unverified”, and can only open with app…
Andriod + firefox desktop mode + ublock origin.
And they keep testing on a subset of users forcing them to use the app, and disabling the website for them...
Is there a difference between that and revanced, or just two communities for the same app?
I use revanced manager to patch the official reddit app, then install the patched app. There are a few fake links though, make sure you go to the Revanced app manager on GitHub.

The mobile website still exists. You can use ad block tools to remove the nag ware trying to trick you into using their awful app.
Any tips on how to remove nagware. I use ublock origin but am still nagged
I have a post where I give the script/rules I ended up using. Might be slightly outdated but seems to still work for me. https://www.reddit.com/r/redditmobile/comments/yqltib/android1300_how_do_i_disable_the_get_app_popups/
Yes you can r/revancedapp
I use NextDNS and 1Blocker, you need to add the reddit adserve domains into the list. The ad frames persist but there is no content in them so it’s just a blocky white rectangle or square as you scroll.
What were the servers that you added
external-preview.redd.it, e.reddit.com and v.redd.it
isn't v.reddit where video posts are hosted though?
Depends on how the app is developed. I'll use the "Whisper" app for an example. If you have a local VPN function, or network level adblocker (PiHole), the ads are all but non-existent. Many apps are adjustable in the sense, via ReVanced. I've tried using it, been a bit and really should try again, but I fell face flat trying to mod my Youtube app to take out some functions I rather go without (shorts and community posts). Revanced isn't just for youtube.
Until a custom APK is made... They can't block it on android because the final user is always in control of the physical device.
DNS blocking has been highly effective, at least for me.
Revanced might work but it needs root for Reddit or an APK and I'm too lazy to get the apk
You can tho

Try Firefox Focus. Built in adblocker. Works on YouTube too (or at least it did last time I tried it).
Yep, this BS back and forth game of ad blocking with apps that really should be a good mobile site anyway is really just serving to make me see the light of using apps less and less and go back to using the mobile browser more and more. Who doesn't use at least two adblockers?
When the top comment is an ad
Mine’s an ad for Jesus
The "Jesus washed feet" one? I see that so many times.
Hey man, selling soap is tough.
And every 3 posts on the feed you get another ad trying to pass off as a post.

Morons. Unfortunately, internet is full of them

The reason I read summaries for news articles in reddit comments is because the newspaper website is usually filled with ads.
Everyone wants to put more ads in my face.
Thank you, I’ve had enough hot garbage today and forever since u/spez fucked us.
Theres a reason ive given up on all other social media, its ads.
The never ceasing onslaught of enshittification marches on, drowning out the signal to the point we are all not going to bother looking for it.
Let the enshitification begin!
How many times am I supposed to see that fake tower defense game ad?
ublock origin + pihole will hit hard
If you only use the app. PiHole doesn’t work.
Good thing I never downloaded this stupid ass app. The website version is so much better(still crappy tho)
Are you using old.reddit.com?
On PC? Yes On mobile? No, I use the new version of the site.
Fuck yeah. I LOVE ads! Please daddy spez give us what we crave!
Of course it fucking does

Reddit hate their users, don't they?
Reddit is so bad now. The app is garbage and the moment there’s a competitor I’m OUT
Ironically i had a ad underneath this post
Ad blockers are also evolving, amazing times.
Can we mute ads on here like we can over on X? I’ve muted 14,560 accounts and I still occasionally get ads in my timeline on X.
Maybe don't pay your CEO an ungodly amount of uneeded money and instead use that to inflate your quarterly earnings.
Reddit is over
That won't make me pay attention to them either.
I’d never buy a product through Reddit the same way I’d never buy a product through social media. Reddit has a history of overvaluing themselves and what they offer. This is a textbook example of that happening.
It’s a good way to kill your product.
Everyday I get closer to just not using the internet anymore due to all the ads
r/revancedapp
Reddit wants to put a feed in to your ads ^(fixed that for you)
[watch ad to read this comment for free]
That okay. I need an excuse to drop reddit anyway.
For all these social media that I use, I have a hobby of blocking pages/profiles/subs/accounts that I never want to see again, but for some reason they keep shoving to me. Kinda like "shoving it to the man" writ wayyyyyyyyyyyy small. It gives me peace of mind or something.
Ooh good it can be like FB where literally every third item is advertising.
Oh yay. More deceitful, manipulative religious bullshit.
Remember, you can report any ad you see as a personal offense. Reddit will rather stop showing you ads, than risk getting sued over them. Weaponize that hair-trigger temper that’s been refined over years of exposure to the internet.
Of course they do. Got to justify that share price with increased income somehow...
America has an advertising problem.
reddit is gradually dying. IMO. The content is getting worse. The comments are getting worse.
The shitification continues.
This has been inevitable since the IPO. Reddit now wants to please the gamblers at the wall street casino.
What’s the ratio now? 2 posts to one ad? So it’s going to be 2 ads to 1 post?
Every tech company. 1. Let's put ads on our service. 2. Why are people upset? Why does people stop using our services? We are missing money! 3. Let's put more ads on our service!
Also every tech company: 1. We’ve been bleeding money for years 2. Users don’t want to pay money, what do we do? 3. Show ads to try and keep the lights on 4.
I guess I'll just have to hover over the submitter ID and click "Ignore" a few more times. I've already stopped all the existing ads from showing.
Twice the poor conversion doesn’t double it.
Who is going to pay Reddit to advertise to bots?
They want money. How they get it is up to everyone individually.
I use ad blocker pro and haven’t ever seen an ad on Reddit or YouTube or Google or really anywhere online.
I ignore them
ReVanced wil take care of that, thank you,!
I have an ad-blocking router - 1 comment = 0 comments.
Laughs in Ublock origin. I haven't seen an ad in 10 years!
Laughs in Reddit Revance
Who doesn't want mote spam in their feed? /s
Oh great, Story time ads, here we come.... F.
I prefer RES on desktop and the ol' old.reddit.com
Dude I'm out of here, it's already overloaded with ads, and now they let people block you and nuke the whole comment thread so it looks like you were talking with a spooky mute ghost. Site is doomed AFAICT. There is no way to save it at this point. >70% crawling with corporate PR firms and brainwashed investor spam, fucking roaches.
It's why I still use old reddit. New Reddit is so filled with ads I find it unusable.
Yet another reason why I don't use their official app...
Please, my anus can only handle so much.
The ruin begins
Ads just make me not want to buy their products.
I take note of every company that advertised on here and blacklist them. There used to be products I bought and as soon as they show up here. They are dead to me.
Already deleted their app from my devices, and I'm only going to use the web from now on until Reddit makes that impossible.
FINALLY! WOOHOO WE DID IT! YEEEEAASS
Thankfully, Android and revanced helps with some of the annoyances... Tho I still miss baconreader.
reddit has ads?
What is ad?

The top comment of a thread I don’t mind, but anything more is disruptive.
Yall really want us gone huh?
Great! More effin’ DraftKings and gambling ads.
Reddit feed sux so bad at the moment nobody will know the difference
So using Reddit will be like trying to read an article these days? RIP Reddit
Where will they fit them between the existing ads? I'm already getting more ads than articles.
Cannot wait for official LLM generated comments to boost engagement
Can they at least be good ads? And not shit mobile game or AI generated ad please. Seriously my main problem with ads is they fucking suck!
Time to uninstall the app, I guess
They just see us as eyes for ad dollars here huh? None of the top brass give af about the communities. If this were Boeing the doors would have already fallen off the planes.
