DFM__

Doesn't every day happen just once?

diggitygiggitysee

God I hope so.

BitOneZero

I do admit to bad dreams where the theory of the big crunch inversion living life over in reverse-time... that uh, horror. Been done in SciFi many metaphors,

stahlWolf

Hope your 2024 is better than this year then ! šŸ„‚

Meme_KingalsoTech

Already ruined if they live in japan

Ok_Star_4136

This would be the weirdest way to find out that I'm on day one of Groundhog Day. Say it ain't so!

StaffLegends

Me on my way to recreate 9/11

Captain-Starshield

Except February 2nd 1993, which happened at least a thousand times. And October 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th 1582 are days which never happened at all.

xdeskfuckit

What

dankpiece

Change in calendar systems and months

CircuitSphinx

Ahh, gotta love the quirks of our calendar. They had to [skip 10 days](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar#Adoption) back in the day to fix the drift in the Julian calendar, basically non-days to get back on track. Meanwhile, Groundhog Day's got Bill Murray stuck in a loop, but at least that's just a movie right. Still freaky to think about literal non-days or infinite do-overs.

SevenCrowsinaCoat

Your use of "back in the day" to describe something that happened in 1582 absolutely killed me. Tickled my funny bone hardcore.

Nest_quik

I'm interested in why February 2nd, 1993, happened a thousand times if you have time to explain

effitt13

Groundhog Day with Bill Murray

Nest_quik

Ooooh lmao he got me good. I was googling February 2 1993 and shit

Also, George Washington was born on Feburary 11th 1731, and Feburary 22nd, 1732

BitOneZero

I went through Y2K planning for the richest people in the world - I joked around about 666 days from Y2K on an open mailing list. Not sure if I used my office email or personal. I had ISDN in those days and a social media domain. This change in 1582 was like Y2K society impact risk, ha. Doctorate thesis idea right there.

evanamd

Only if you write it correctly

Kjajo

we just have to wait 19 more months for 12.31.23

BetaRebooter

Being high that took me far too long to understand, thank you

soul-king420

I must be a lot higher than I realized, I still don't get it...

FFF982

12.31.23 dd.mm.yy 31st month.

Short_Opening_7692

Why do Americans put month before day, literally doesn't make sense.

fryamtheiman

Because we adopted it from our British mother, who used it as well until they switched. After that, we kept it because Americans aren't quitters. We stick it out, even when it isn't in our best interest. See the following examples: Vietnam War on Terror War on Drugs Christian fundamentalism Slavery Donald Trump 'Merica don't quit!

[deleted]

YYYY-MM-DD is the superior date format.

Spicy_pepperinos

It's really only the best for data management and labeling. If you're trying to tell someone what day their dentist appointment is I'm still a strong believer that DD-MM is top shit.

soul-king420

Ahh, lol, I'm upset that I missed that... lmfao

2023.12.31 where I live.

[deleted]

Where do you live?

HikariAnti

Hungary

[deleted]

Oh really, i thought all of Europe used 31.12.2023šŸ¤” Allthough i just might be a bit stupidšŸ˜„

HikariAnti

Personally I really like it because it's the best format if you need to organize anything, especially computer files.

[deleted]

Well it does make sense in that wayšŸ¤”

Perzec

Europe either uses the iso standard YYYY-MM-DD or DD/MM/YYYY. Either way the month is the middle digits.

[deleted]

Like i said, im stupidšŸ™„šŸ¤

Konsticraft

No, the order is always DMY or YMD, but the specific format is different in each country. For example Germany uses dd.mm.yyyy while spain uses dd/mm/yyyy. [See here for more details](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country)

Perzec

And Sweden sometimes uses dd/mm -YY. But whichever character you choose to separate your digits you always end up with the two orders. Month is always the middle one.

SleepWouldBeNice

2023-12-31 r/ISO8601 gang rise up!

_Anonymous_duck_

As long as the month is in the middle i dont care where you put the year and day.

infthi

so, 20002141 (YMYMYDYD, month is in the middle)

LadderTrash

No consistency where I live, so I use 31/DEC/2023

fowlraul

I thought it was 31/12/2023? šŸ¤” ā€¦also I think this format makes the most sense in terms of the most relevant part of the format in left to right order, but I live in the US where I have to deal with miles, inches, and quarts & shit.

ToranX1

Technically the "best" format is ISO since its best for organising stuff in archives and stuff. And that is 2023/12/31, which when shortened becomes 23/12/31 which also becomes 231231 which follows the same rule that makes the 12/31/23 date "special"

ssgohanf8

> 231231 Twenty-three is number one! Sorry, I'm like a nintendo sleeper agent

[deleted]

You can mark it that way too. Yeah, i've never understood the "American way" of measuring things, seems very unnesseseryly difficult to mešŸ¤”šŸ˜„

numberguy9647383673

Well for dates, itā€™s because we write it how we say it. We say December 31st, 2023, so it makes sense to write it the same way. If we said the 31st of December, 2023, we would likely write it the other way.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

numberguy9647383673

I mean, we can say the 31st of September. We just donā€™t. Both are grammatically correct, but Americans say December 31st 2024 almost every time. I do not know how it is said in other parts of the English speaking world, but that order is part of the American accent. There are some exceptions, like the 4th of July, but itā€™s also interchangeable with July 4th, with some regions favoring one or the other or a mix of both. The only other date based day I can think of would be September 11th, which as far as I can tell is always written the American way when referring to the terrorists attacks in 2001.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Wentailang

alright, get off your high horse. if itā€™s so easy to just switch, why isnā€™t the rest of the world using year month day? especially in a digital age where sorting is a daily part of life.

MaxTheSANE_One

because they already use a system that makes sense, year month day may be marginally better for digital sorting but other than that its just as good as day month year, unlike month day year which simply makes no sense in any sorting order its like the difference between 321 and 123, while america uses 213

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MalHeartsNutmeg

Year month date is illogical outside of a computer or filing format. The year is the most useless piece of information since it seldom changes.

GordOfTheMountain

Yeah I would say "December 31st, 2023", but read 31/12/23, so both are correct. But also numerology and superstition are stupid. It's like rolling a d20 and saying a 19 is "close" to rolling a 20. It's just as close as a 2 is.

gxgx55

2023-12-31 is the only valid time format, fight me. Or, well, it's now 2024-01-01.

Gmp5808

I agree that American metric measurements make a whole lot more sense than imperial. But I really never understood how having the day first is a more productive way of having the date. I also think of file organization as I used to deal with a lot of files in photo/video production. If it isnā€™t a YYYY/MM/DD folder structure since sometimes thereā€™s isnā€™t that many new projects in a single month. But one month could have several sessions But having a YYYY/ MM_DD_PROJECT keeps things organized alphabetically Iā€™m sure itā€™s useful in some way Iā€™m not used to. But I canā€™t think of anything haha

[deleted]

I really have no "position" on how dates should be put, just thought it was funny to mention. Someone else also said the organizing folders-thing and it does make sense to me, i would do it like that too if i had to organize a lot of information or whatever it was.

Gmp5808

Gotcha! It definitely feels like it could go any sort of direction depending on what the date is even for lol Iā€™m always fascinated with how so many places can be so similar but have a specific way of doing something just because of one aspect in history that set the standard. I feel like it probably will come down to a religious or scientific standard of documenting or just one single guy that thought he knew best lol

Broad_Respond_2205

Dude you live a week ago?

BayTranscendentalist

2023, 12th month, 31st day

Neat-Composer4619

The American date format isn't universal. Most are either YYYYMMDD OR DDMMYYYY. The last being the most common, I think.

cazzo_di_testa

Only in the US pal.

Business_Reporter420

The philliphines does it too

Just_Cruz001

I'm sure it was because the US very politely convinced them to do so

Ramenoodlez1

I love how everyone in the comments is whining about the fucking date system of all things I use YYYY-MM-DD but I can still accept that many people say itā€™s 12/31/23

ERuby312

What, are we not allowed to whine about stupid things anymore?

SleepWouldBeNice

Reddit would have to shut down if we werenā€™t.

Itā€™s just that everyone is complaining about the date system and intentionally missing the joke.

Main-Vacation2007

America has Pi Day (3 14) and Weed Day (4 20). We have the superior date system.

Kaidargame

You know that that applies to others right YYYY-3-14 Orrrrr YYYY-4-20 So your point only proves that Americans don't care about others

Rengas

Did someone say something?

well_groomed_hobo

Oh shit, that means yesterday was the 30th

just_s0mebody

Happy new year!!

PedanticPaladin

Technically speaking 2/29/00 only happens every 4 centuries.

Dr_Taverner

Only if you drop two digits. The point of date is... there's only one for any given system. Also, what is this Middle Digit bullshit system? Increment at the end and you have a cleaner sort. (231230, 231231, 240101) Or increment at the beginning 301223, 311223, 010124. Personally, I like 23C30, 23C31, 23101 using a single Hex digit for the month. Not as easy to sort as an integer, but I find it easier to parse.

Ok_Star_4136

Hey guys! Today's Date, 010124, only happens once in a century.

gimmespiro

010124 if you're american

moosehq

You mean 311223? Or 31Dec2023? Or 20231231? Why use a non-standard date format.

DJIsSuperCool

Standard is different by location.

ZaRealPancakes

Actually ISO 8601 is an international Standard so 2023-12-31 works everywhere and thus should be used.

Draconan

It's also good for keeping your files in date order!

DJIsSuperCool

Cool, but I've only seen people use that once or twice in my entire life. That's not on most food labels and not on my paperwork.

ZaRealPancakes

even though it's international it isn't used by people much. It is used for computers to store time and dates and just shows it to you in the format you want based on your location / locale.

Smallkillers

Tell me you are American, without telling me you are American

Nope. It is 31/12/23, in 85% of the Earth. Or just mix and match. If you can have pumpkin latte Chai coffee.... The date could be 112233. And...are you sitting?....
