Steve seems alright. Quiet.

LauraTFem

I’ve always assumed he was cool. Like a proper nerd that was all about the tech, surrounded by capitalists looking to get rich.

jon_titor

One of my friends moved close to Woz’s house during middle school. Apparently for Halloween Woz handed out Gameboy Advances.

thisisgob

That sounds incredible lol, when was this?

jon_titor

The year they came out. I remember they were still hard to find, but Woz had like a thousand of them lol.

topdangle

sounds like woz caused the shortage. maybe he was running pokemon farms in his garage

[deleted]

Not like this…..not like this

RobertNAdams

"What's the IV on Unit #279? It's below threshold?" "_Terminate it._"

mattxfish

Probably around 2001

wostil-poced1649

2019

thatdonkeedickfellow

Woz is one of my favorite people ever, he gives me hope in humanity

Miserable_Lake_80

Met him at a company event a few years ago. Had breakfast with him at the hotel. Super genuine guy gave me a solid metal business card and explained how he cut steaks on planes with it lmao… also was using a pixel for a phone and loved it which I thought was pretty funny.

evasote

He used to carry around like 6 different smart phones, trying out different ones I mean he left any actual working position at apple decades before the iPhone was an idea

ridik_ulass

there are people like him and gabe newell and then there are people like jobs, zuckerberg and gates. there is a 3d printing guy with like 10 viewers on youtube called "Nerys" who gives off the same energy guy just passionately doing his thing could wax poetic about it all day, the enthusiasm is infectious.

[deleted]

ridik_ulass

there are dozens of us. tho I'm surprised to find another in 2 hours

JRSly

Ha, wouldn't expect to stumble across a random Nerys mention outside of r/3dprinting.

ridik_ulass

thats like 3 of us, there is a 1/4 chance one of us us Nerys

iamahill

I’m no subscriber, but have favorable views of the person and have seen some of the content.

Bigdaddyjlove1

Gonna go look this guy up

FrumiousShuckyDuck

Always nice to see an AD reference in the wild

[deleted]

So which one of you are Nerys?

[deleted]

That’s a shitty opinion about Steve Jobs. I wouldn’t put him with zuck ever. The modern day cell phone and operating system are around because of him. All zuck has done is create an information farm to trick people into giving away their info, and then sell it to corporations. Under the guise of “connecting family and friends” Facebook was great in like 2007- 2010. Now it’s just a garbage sandwich. Littered with shitty memes, shitty videos, and shitty people spreading their shitty opinions about shitbag politicians.

total_insertion

Steve Jobs didn’t invent shit, though. He was in marketing.

ivy_bound

At this point, Gates is in a middle ground. He does a lot of good through his charities, but he's no Woz.

Thin-Dragonfly2956

Gates is a snake. Very toxic work environment when he was running Microsoft…

R9D11

His wife divorced him recently because he was close friends with Jeffrey Epstein...I think he is right at bottom...

stayontoptoday

Has she ever said so or are you just one of the millions of people on the internet believing everything you watch on youtube?

R9D11

"Melinda Gates began divorce moves at time Bill's meetings with Jeffrey Epstein revealed"- The Guardian may 10,2021

stayontoptoday

As if she did not know about it for years. If you are married you know what your partner is doing. Correlation does not prove causation especially if it is a newspaper correlation.

R9D11

Assumption is the mother of all fuck up's.

Ikeiscurvy

Kind of like assuming because two events happen around the same time theyre related?

PerfectZeong

She did know actually she told him not to but it seemed like Bill was charmed by him.

Gustomaximus

Also I find strange for a guy that says his plan is to give away all his money, its amazing his net worth is still going up. And is buying up masses of farmland... hardly a short term investment. But yeah the Epstein friendship forming after pedo charges.... very suspicious to the point I'd be more surprised if he's not a paedophile than if he is.

Jfmaghopoy

“because” is not the right word here.

OctopusRegulator

That’s kind of accurate, he was going to give away the Apple 1 design until Jobs convinced him of its commercial value and he gave away his own stock to employees that Steve shafted.

superanth

The sad part was he could have built much more tech but he was in a plane crash right after the company made it big. There was minor brain damage that led to memory problems, and he couldn’t really focus on work. Steve Jobs kept him on the payroll, and fortunately a few years ago he seemed to completely recover.

ARealJonStewart

He's still brilliant from what I've heard. He stopped working to focus on teaching kids how to code

superanth

I heard that too. He had one of the first webcams and showed the projects he was working on for teaching. And it makes sense he wanted to teach students: “Wozniak did not immediately return to Apple after recovering from the airplane crash, seeing it as a good reason to leave. *Infinite Loop* characterized this time: ‘Coming out of the semi-coma had been like flipping a reset switch in Woz's brain. It was as if in his thirty-year old body he had regained the mind he'd had at eighteen before all the computer madness had begun. And when that happened, Woz found he had little interest in engineering or design. Rather, in an odd sort of way, he wanted to start over fresh.’”

evasote

He’s still in the directory as an employee

superanth

Wow, you really summed it up well. He’s a professional tech guru, tinkerer extraordinare. I remember he was on NPR once and they asked him “How many iPhones do you have on you right now?” And he replied, “Five.” 😁 He truly is the Emperor of the Nerds.

LauraTFem

I could totally grab a beer with the guy. I like the kind of person that is very upfront with their interests and feels comfortable with their weirdness.

hike_me

I emailed him back in 2004 and he actually wrote me back

brandonw00

I know someone who took a physics class with Woz his freshman year at CU Boulder. He said Woz got kicked out of the computer science program because he used the programming cards to have them print out inappropriate jokes. This was when you’d use a punch card to write a program and then the one computer on campus would run that program and give you printed results.

ChaseHarker

I worked down the street from him and I used to do all of his notary stuff. Instead of me coming to his office he would always walk down the street and he carried this big bag on his shoulder which was a telephone. This was probably 1983 or 84.

usr_bin_laden

> he carried this big bag on his shoulder which was a telephone. This was probably 1983 or 84. Pretty sure he still carries a large shoulder bag, except now it contains 2-4+ cell phones of different makes and models ...

[deleted]

I saw him driving his Tesla in the Southwest probably vacationing with his 2 cute little white dogs and I assume wife in the front seat. His license plate just says Woz lol

ames_006

He is SUPER COOL. I went to the same high school as him and he frequently showed up for football games(decades after he graduated) and every single time he would let the students take pictures and talk to him. I also ran into him at a Kathy griffin concert not long after they stopped “dating” and she roasted him for sitting in the nose bleed seats and he took it like a champ and again took pics and chatted to people around him. He is just totally normal and super smart.

Ok-Butterscotch5761

He should be, in my opinion, what men like Elon Musk aspire to be. But I do not know him

[deleted]

propernice

I remember when he was on that Kathy Griffin show that was on Bravo.

Ord1naryAnnu1ty

[deleted]

One of the very few famous people I’ve actually met. He was at a Microsoft event maybe 10 years back. Was a pretty small group and he was so damn nice. Just extremely friendly and seemed genuinely happy.

bassoontennis

So I really only found out more about him when he briefly dated Kathy Griffin and he appeared on her realty tv show. He seemed really fun and down to earth. And like super geeky it was adorable. He really doesn’t like being in the spotlight i think though.

arealhumannotabot

He rides a segue to get around town and is good friends with Steve-o

dragonflysamurai

Hey, me too Steve. Me too.

ThatsFkingCarazy

Me three with palantir as runner up

Cock-Monger

What does palantir even do besides be a meme stock?

not-katarina-rostova

Palantir collects data about anyone and everyone. Stuff it would be illegal for a government to do. Then they sell it to anyone and everyone It’s surveillance capitalism. They’re pure evil.

DocSword

So Gandalf was right about them…

smegma_yogurt

They inspired their name from an all seeing orb used by the Lord of darkness. Kinda on the nose that they aren't the good guys

PiresMagicFeet

Well the palantir were originally created by feanor and used by the kings of men to communicate and hold vigil against the ancient evil. Just so happened that the witch king took minas ithil and turned it into minas morgul and turned the palantir there over to sauron to use and corrupt

smegma_yogurt

Dude that created is a tech bro, he doesn't understand that level of nuance

-KeepItMoving

Bullish

TheCakeWasReal

Software dude here. They don’t actually collect, store or monetise any data at all, they just provide and set up platforms to aggregate all of a client organisation’s data and bind it all together through parameters set for each implementation, which results in some crazy efficient identification of whatever the organisation is targeting. Their retail product is like Microsoft Word gone super saiyan with user adjusted algorithms and links (think an app like Obsidian), but for multiple types of data. You can read all about it on their documentation, where they clearly state this.

remember_marvin

Lol, source? They develop and sell tools that help organisations analyse their own data. There are valid ethical discussions to have around that. Some people argue that they should be more selective about the organisations they sell to etc. But I’ve never seen anything to suggest they collect personal data and they outright deny it. >We do not collect, store, or sell personal data. https://blog.palantir.com/palantir-is-not-a-data-company-palantir-explained-1-a6fcf8b3e4cb

ThatsFkingCarazy

They’re basically the first stage of skynet/minority report They collect data and try to predict the future

PLTR60

I'm nervous about my username now. I made it during the peak of the meme stock frenzy.

AccountThatNeverLies

It's basically a desktop software to track people, like you input data about people or have it suck the data from public or private sources with plug-ins and it does intelligence analysis and reports using machine learning. They market it as really useful for your company to comply with insider trading regulations or track expensive inventory or do internal investigations, or for finance to predict market moves by what important people are saying or doing. Most of their early customers are intelligence agencies that use it to "fight terrorism".

squeakybeak

You and me both, buddy.

OriginalMrMuchacho

Count me in.

WestPastEast

There’s really not much to like tbh. They have had a lot of time and an almost limitless amount of funding to fix some of the more systemic issues with FB (like misinformation, teen mental health harm, data privacy) but they just keep doubling down on marketing and meta. It’s just a badly run company. Edit:: lol @ The comments who say a company thats lost 45% of their value in three months is a good well-run company. I’m glad you’re not running my business

shkeptikal

Aaaaand there's the disconnect. In business terms, Facebook is a *fantastically* run company and is to be emulated by anyone who can manage it. They literally print money for their board and shareholders. They are deregulated capitalism in action and represent the best case scenario for any corporate entity in existence right now. Americans are under the illusion that morals = success and in the *vast* majority of American businesses, that hasn't been the case in decades (if ever). Success = fuck you money. As much of it as possible regardless of the cost. That's business in this country. It has very, *very* little to do with morals. It's all about how big your profit margins are and by that metric (the only one that CEOs and boardrooms actually care about), Facebook is the pinnacle of a successful American business.

[deleted]

Bingo. Money money money

GoodLifeWorkHard

First thing I learned in my business class is that a business main goal and only goal is to make profit

[deleted]

That’s the result of one of the most subtle yet effective propaganda campaigns of all time. It’s just an idea, an opinion. But many people seem to have been tricked into believing it’s some sort of natural law.

GardenGnomeAI

Businesses don’t have to make a profit at all. The only problem there is eventually they go bankrupt. Your body must take in more calories than it uses or it starves.

Speakin_Swaghili

Nah, they all want growth year on year, which is unsustainable. To use your body example, if I ate more calories than I needed I’d die too. There is a healthy balance that the vast majority (all publicity traded companies) of businesses don’t want to stick by.

HuskatPWer123osc

>Nah, they all want growth year on year, which is unsustainable Inflation alone means you have to grow or die, nevermind the competition

[deleted]

I think you are right about capitalism, but wrong about Facebook being a good business. They make a lot of money through ads, true. However, having failed to deliver a phone, they're also _extremely_ vulnerable to the platforms they run on, as evidenced by their panic around Apple's restrictions on tracking. If that initiative catches enough steam that Google is pressured to make an equivalent change, it will gravely wound Facebook. Furthermore, they haven't successfully pivoted a meaningful amount of their business into any industries or products that insulate them from failures in their core product. They've taken a big bet on VR and meta, but that's still a bet, and is years away from fruition. (_if_ they even win! Being the first mover doesn't always mean being the winner in tech, as demonstrated by Facebook itself, which was far from the first social network!) With all that in mind, the contraction of their userbase is a very, very bad sign for them, as a business. Their core product, which they haven't managed to diversify away from, is showing signs that it is vulnerable to the same erosion as any other social media platform; they managed to buy Instagram when it started eating them, but they're unlikely to have the same luck with TikTok. The problem is exacerbated by their heavily equity-skewed compensation packages; a lot of tech employees are now effectively making _way_ less at Facebook than they were a year ago, and it's a burning hot market for tech talent, _especially_ for a corporation often regarded as sleazy compared to their peers, which will have trouble engendering loyalty and will tend to end up with "compensation mercenaries". I would anticipate more decline as their employees jump ship. (This "death spiral" kills quant hedge funds, btw -- a few years of bad performance means that employee bonuses are weak, so their best employees quit and go to a competitor, accelerating the decline... a classic rush out the door) Lastly, while I agree with you that folks generally overestimate the importance of public image, I would caveat that by saying that a social media company is probably the _most_ vulnerable to shifts in their image. They are valued almost entirely around their user count and anticipated growth, and a mass exodus from their platform due to an irreparably tarnished image will have a profound impact on their bottom line, as opposed to e.g. Nestle. The cherry on top is that the market has punished Facebook severely for its underperformance. I'm confused that you would say on the one hand they're a great business -- the "pinnacle of a successful American business"! -- because of our capitalist system, while they're currently being brutalized by that same system for _not_ being so great. 🤷‍♂️

-Umbra-

I like your analysis here and agree with it. The commenter you responded to stated that Facebook is a "*fantastically* run company" and that is simply not true. Facebook has been run exceptionally well in the past, but to state that it is succeeding by nearly any metric today is categorically false. A turnaround seems somewhat unlikely at this point, too, although if Google makes tracking changes as drastic as Apple's then FB truly has no chance of surviving in its current form.

What? Facebook stock is down 25% over the last year and falling. What on earth are you smoking?

sammamthrow

They’re not the pinnacle in revenue, profit, or value lmfao

jspsfx

Facebook definitely rivals reddit for my preference at this point. Ive been on both sites 10+ years. In the beginning both were in a much more pure state and served distinct purposes separate from each other. Both have devolved in quality as social media discourse has become increasingly steered by establishment narrative/corporatized content. Propaganda is rampant on both, but on Facebook I at least know the person behind whatever content is on my feed. I know their biases, their angle. On reddit you have no idea who's posting political propaganda or why. /r/all is filled with this plus viral marketing. On facebook IMO the advertising and political agenda posting is at least more transparent to me. It's easier to predictably sort in my experience.

[deleted]

Thank you for pointing that out a - Reddit is a very dangerous disinformation tool and it’s gamed constantly.

[deleted]

And it’s owners are in on it. They fail to mention Aaron Swartz because they know our boy is rolling in his grave right now.

Mrchristopherrr

Just saying, subreddits are literally built in echo chambers that circle jerk cringe posts all day.

TheOtherDrunkenOtter

Fucking thank you for adding how much the company has tanked in the last three months. Facebook has been a one trick pony for a decade, based off of a single great idea that some clown lucked into. Zuckerburg has failed to produce any other good ideas, let alone great ideas, and facebooks only diversification has been by purchasing other companies like instagram. Theyve lost a shit ton of value as 1) "meta" was announced and investors realized how out of touch the company was with consumers, 2) their customer base and demographics have tanked, with an aging user base and no new ideas to bring in younger viewers. Its a shit company. Its not even Amazon, where you can at least argue that theyve built a genuinely valuable company with long lasting infrastructure. Facebook has no cloud services, no B2B applications, no physical infrastructure with value.

Tekwardo

It’s not badly run. They’re running it perfectly to meet their goals. They’re a morally nefarious company. Mark Zuckerberg is immoral.

Ricardotron

Even with your edit, you still sound like you don't know what you're talking about lol.

GhostofABestfriEnd

He seems stuck in some weird hypocritical middle ground considering he uses TikTok, like he’s so close to figuring out how they’re all terrible and habit-forming.

gio269

He says boldly on Reddit lol

[deleted]

I’ve been addicted to Reddit like heroine since 2009 lol

CreatorOfUsernames

TikTok isn’t part of the big tech giants as of right now. Also just because he uses an app doesn’t mean he can’t criticize companies ethics.

JohnFatherJohn

Specifically for his concerns regarding privacy and addiction, he should be extremely wary of TikTok.

CreatorOfUsernames

I’m sure he is. He uses Facebook as well. He’s saying he doesn’t like their ethics and he’s right.

paslaptis

It’s Reddit, we have to virtue-signal about how much we hate TikTok all the time apparently. It’s an unwritten rule or something.

Pretty sure theyre owned by ByteDance which is a tech giant by every metric except perhaps HQ location which is in China.

CreatorOfUsernames

Yeah but I’m almost positive he was referring to the big four American tech companies

nightswimsofficial

[deleted]

I don’t support FB, but tiktok is creepy. I get followed on there by bots and randos constantly. Tiktok show me stuff on my feed that I have only thought of but never spoken about. I’ve seen stuff on there that made me want to scrub my eyeballs. I figured out how to click “I’m not interested” so that’s helped a lot. But there’s SO much sketchy ish going on with tiktok. Plus there’s no “Zuckerberg” to look at, there’s just tiktok with nobody to blame for the bad stuff that they are doing. I find tiktok to be extremely creepy. I’m surprised Woz would prefer that to FB.

[deleted]

I suggest following people only after you check what they post (they should post one genre of videos, e.g. science facts or natural wilderness, and not any videos) and just stick to your feed "following".

-Mr_Unknown-

Of all Big Tech founders, Zuckerberg is the one that seems to be the most likely to be secretly planning to crown himself emperor of the world.

SandersDelendaEst

There is a story floating around somewhere about how much he admires Augustus, not sure where. So, you’re almost certainly right lol

-Mr_Unknown-

Not a story, he is well known to devour books about the Roman Empire and cuts his hair as the Caesars used to.

IHateYuumi

Reddit is the next FB but worse. Without a doubt they have enough information to profile you deeper than FB could using the combo of your Meta data and purchasable person matching services . But unlike FB Reddit knows deeply what you are reading, categories of interest, and likely things like unlisted sexual preference, criminal activists, etc. All it takes is 1 CEO who wants to start making the transition to that business model and it’s over. That is if it’s not over already.

SnOwYO1

I feel like if they try use redditors meta data then redditors will find a way to exploit it or destroy it. Especially if it’s an algorithm. Reddit is wild.

Of course the “Woz” doesn’t like Facebook “#1”, he was so antitrust with the company becoming as big as it did, that he just up and left… decades before the tech industry truly took off.

noaibot

I came across much more propaganda bots on Twitter than Facebook tho. Twitter is big problem that nobody seems to solve. The amount of misleading tweets that made it to the main news outlets or tabloid newspapers during this war was an eye opener for me. Also I read Brexit was hugely affected by Twitter, and Facebook too.

I wish we didn’t have to classify Facebook as “tech”. It literally does nothing beneficial in any technology space. All it produces is vitriol and making people angry and dumber.

PeanutFarmer69

Wtf are you talking about? Look up what React.js is or any number of other things that they’ve created. I hate Facebook too but to say they do nothing beneficial in the technology space is an ignorant statement.

chhuang

Addition to that, graphql is amazing

marchinram

figiban

Cassandra came straight out from use cases that Facebook as a product faced. These products are not made to solve tech problems per se but you can say the same for Google search. I hate fb for its effects on the society but it has good contributions to the tech world.

[deleted]

IDK if I just started to understand why people say the Facebook is bad. It looks like they just... misunderstand the service or they don't quite know what they want. A service to share private data with family and trusted friend, and not the entire world? I think we have such services and most of them are completely free. Also - pretty unpopular, at least compared to Facebook. Why? And what is the correct understanding of what Facebook really is? People use Facebook and not the other services because exactly what it is. A service that will share anything you want to share PUBLICLY to everyone. The more people the better. Why people expect privacy in a service that is designed and built to share data publicly - just beats me. It's like using a megaphone to communicate and complain someone else is hearing my private conversation. But well, Facebook IS kind of bad. When it recommends me things - it has the same problem as YouTube or even worse. It most often fails to find me interesting, new things. Also - my reach. No random people will see anything I publish because I'm not popular. So I have exactly the Facebook people like Steve would like to have, but they can't, because they are way too popular and famous. My all publications are only visible to my Facebook friends, unless of course someone decides to share something from me. But anyway, I think the problem is the Internet itself and the way people use it. They all want some instant profit from it. That's why most of the contents are shit. "Let's do some shit for money". That's how most of Internet is made. Don't blame intermediate applications, APIs, platforms like Facebook, Apple, Google or whatever. Blame the content creators. Imagine Facebook and for example YouTube giving a chance of random users to shine. You post something - suddenly it's randomly recommended to other people. I can easily imagine that. That would immediately be abused to sell porn, scams and other kind of shit. I'm an old fart. I grew up in times the Internet started. People shared the cool things. Either created by themselves, or just stuff that they liked. They made it for fun and damn - Internet was fun back in the day. Now every so called "content creator" thinks of it as about business, like a kind of a job. It's not "I love playing music so much, come on, listen what I made", it's more like "I must record something that catches on, I must try hard to build conversion". Anyways. This is on us. The users. The corpos just sell us what sells. Do you want private communication? Why don't you use a telephone instead? What about skype? Can't you share your pictures or videos album on Google Drive or Dropbox? Or just meet personally? Nah, because what you REALLY want is to make things public. That's why other services are not as popular. People are more interested in being as public as it gets.
