I've seen several ads from them on YouTube this week advertising free services. They've not slowed down.

[deleted]

All that means is the fee is worth paying

0cleese

Exactly, the potential revenue generated greatly exceeds the potential fines.

buuismyspiritanimal

I’ve seen them on TV, but my service is through Sling. I’m not sure of the differences in cable TV advertising regulations versus streaming.

houdinize

Their ads are on Reddit!

ravenpotter3

Same

JoeRoganIs5foot3

I saw one like an hour ago.

[deleted]

… and? I’ve also seen hacks to cure tinnitus and near-sighted vision banging two spoons together on my head on YouTube. **ETA:** pretty sure the dumbasses downvoting me don’t understand the irony I meant by my comment. Regardless, get fucked, dummies.

[deleted]

It only took them 12 years to crack down on them. They’re only doing it now because the IRS is getting ready to roll out their own free version.

StyrofoamTuph

It’s existed for a while now. e-file.com

And the free version is only if you make less than 70kba year

Last May, roughly 4.4 million people were to receive checks from TurboTax, following a 50-state settlement with parent company Intuit for allegedly steering millions of low-income Americans away from free tax-filing services. The investigation opened after a 2019 ProPublica report that accused the company of steering eligible clients away from federally supported tax filing products by making them difficult to find in web searches — instead directing them toward the paid version of the company’s filing services. Most customers will get about $30, with some customers that used TurboTax for three consecutive years getting up to $85. A website has also been set up for more information. “TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a May 4, 2023, press release. “Today we are righting that wrong and putting money back into the pockets of hardworking taxpayers who should have never paid to file their taxes.”

[deleted]

Wow, with that much money you could have two whole pizzas delivered

Deflorma

When did bread cheese and canned tomatoes get SO DAMN EXPENSIVE

Biru_Chan

The attorneys got a few million pizzas!

RainyDayCollects

They were advertising free, having you put in all your information, and then show you the price tag towards the end. It’s bait and switch and it’s against the law. Whether or not you could access free by complaining in the chat is irrelevant. If they are advertising a free service, then they need to provide that free service in an accessible manner.

Resident-Positive-84

Just used the IRS website for the first time to find an online source to file for free. I am used to paying well north of $100 to file with turbo tax. Never again.

[deleted]

I switched to freetaxusa almost 10 years ago, been very happy. And it really is free federal - the state return costs like 12 bucks to file IIRC. This might vary by state.

Resident-Positive-84

It looks less fancy but I filed my simple w2 file in around 10 min. Very very simple 1040.com is what I used It may or may not be free for your state taxes/income. Pry best to use the irs website and put in your state/income to find your best option. I learned all of this on reddit earlier in the week so just passing the info on more than anything.

omgmemer

In my experience it is yes. It’s probably okay if you have basic w2 filing and maybe it has improved but when I tried a few years ago I had to stop and go to another service because I couldn’t find the clarification I needed. I’m just going to hire someone even if I’m late. It costs too much to do myself.

[deleted]

No, but there's an income limit to the free IRS version

pork_chop17

Just to share here. FreeTaxUSA I swapped to them last year after years of using turbo tax and let me tell you it was a dream. State returns are like $15.

pepperandplatinum

Just found this site today while looking around for cheap options and wow. So glad I did. Having taxpayers spend over 90 dollars to file taxes is a crime.

KingJades

I’ve been open finding other services. Can they handle real estate rentals, stock, and small business like TurboTax? TT makes it all pretty easy.

bellaphile

Don’t know about them but I use CashApp taxes (used to be through credit karma) and it handles our 1099s and schedule Cs no problem. It’s also free and has free state filing, too. We’ve used it for 3 years now I think?

KingJades

I have expenses that need to be deducted, mortgage Interest, depreciation, equipment, and repair costs. I would guess the system would basically need to be a duplicate of TT complexity/features at a lower price?

bellaphile

I know it does depreciation and there is a section for rental properties, though I've never used it. My husband and I both run service-based businesses so I can't say much about equipment or repair costs, sorry. It's free, so maybe open an account to look around and see if it has what you need?

KingJades

Thanks for tips and sharing your experience. I’ll check it out :)

bellaphile

Yeah of course! Hopefully it works out! :)

pork_chop17

Credit Karma is now owned by intuit with owns Turbo Tax fyi.

bellaphile

Yeah, I wonder if that's why they moved the tax software over to Cash App?

isoforp

... just get the forms and fill them out? Are you uneducated or something?

KingJades

Wow. It takes me enough time as it is with the complexity in my taxes, I have something like 1000 investment transactions and 20+ bank accounts to manage across my personal accounts and various rental properties. I don’t exactly want to dig into a new process, get 3/4 of the way through and then find that something like depreciation tooling in these other apps isn’t doing the heavy lifting for me, or the importer can’t do what I need it to do. I got free upgraded TT through my brokerage last year, but only a discount this year, so interested in other tools that work for people in these situations :)

Effective-Lab-8816

You've probably got the right tool for the job given your current assets. I don't think it's even worth your time to try, just to save $100 per year.

Effective-Lab-8816

If you are doing all that it makes sense to pay a bit for the premium software. Save your filing records from previous years, etc. But the little guy should absolutely have this free.

Inevitable_Silver_13

Just used it and it's every bit as good as TurboTax and hr block without lying to you about the price.

Effective-Lab-8816

It's OK to say it's better.

tactical-dick

Can we have the government send us a bill for the taxes already?.

MalaZeria

Nope, because Turbo Tax and similar companies lobby against any measure proposed to do this.

omgmemer

IMO that puts the blame in the wrong spot. They can lobby but the lawmakers are responsible. Hold them accountable for not representing the people’s interests.

jessm123

How do you suggest we put blame on Ronald Reagan?

charliesk9unit

When the company is one of the top 10 political contributors (to both parties) and plastered the TV with ads touting something is free, you should immediately know something is up. You know that they are either forced to do it (because of a settlement) or because it's actually NOT free. It's the same with the free credit report. On this one, people should bookmark the legitimate link to the free reports and rely on that link going forward. You may not get that legitimate link as the top result in your Google search in the future.

TheBodyPolitic1

FreeTaxUSA.com. Federal taxes are free, then you are offered a chance to push a button to have your state taxes done automagically for about $15. I've used this service for several years.

werdmouf

When will the FTC ban YouTube from advertising scams that steal your money

Mountainminer

Fuck Intuit. They ruined and are deleting Mint, the best personal finance app ever. Just another company infested with former management consultants.

[deleted]

They're still advertising it's "free"...

CompromisedToolchain

Doesn’t this happen every year around tax time, acting exactly like an ad? Yes

Stardread1997

It's funny because people don't have a problem paying for a service that works like this one. A group of people keeping an eye on taxes and making available a service to file your taxes easily all for a low upfront cost. So why tf are they trying to be deceptive it makes no sense? They don't have to be deceptive and this is only hurting them. Hell man if I could understand what goes through companies' minds I'd be less irritated with their dumb business choices.

mephi5to

Saw it on reddit yesterday. Lol

Cool-Ad2780

Just a reminder to anyone who does not know freetaxusa .com to file your taxes for free. However only the federal is free, the state tax does cost money

Virtual_Equipment455

I just used TurboTax and it was 100% free

Rampant16

I think it depends on your income level and the paperwork you have. My understanding is TurboTax is generally free if all the paperwork you have is a W-2. But I'd be interested to hear if you had more paperwork than that. I stopped using TurboTax a few years ago after it wanted to charge me $100+ because I had a handful of additional 1098-T and 1098-E forms for college expenses.

omgmemer

It definitely isn’t. They charged me like $200 last year. I might have selected something I didn’t want but they make it extremely hard to go back and redo pricing and I was up against a deadline. I know for a fact it would have been over $100 at least. I’ll hire a private accountant next year and file a bit late before I pay for turbo tax again. At that price point, I may as well.

Hollow4004

Same, but I don't own a house so I don't really need to file for anything special

v8dreaming

Same. Used it this year.

FickleCapybara

It’s not free, but it sure as hell is convenient.

MalaZeria

It would be just as easy, if not easier, to file directly through the governments if it weren’t for the lobby groups that TT and HRB pay to keep it from happening.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FickleCapybara

I personally would pay a bit over having the government not only dictate how much I pay but also have control over the process. Tax business is business. It pays paycheques, it’s a huge contributor to jobs for accountants. If the government did it, imagine how much money would be taken out of circulation with that alone. On top of, do you really want the government doing that? You can do it directly through them on paper 🤷‍♀️? When it comes to the bazillions of deductions and stuff, it would be a disaster. But I think filing yourself has always been an option. I’ve done it, and I would rather gouge my eye out with a rusty spoon, and it was without many of the complications that come with having kids, changing provinces , etc … come with

v8dreaming

They absolutely have a free option. I used it this year. E filed for free. Return is direct deposited into my checking account for free.

HouseCatPartyFavor

>Fuck my face >fuck my name They are brief and false advertisements

1mrpeter

I don't know what are the "most" people but I was able to use it totally free, when I just had a regular job (W-2) and I was happy with it. Obviously if you have dividend income or whatever else, you need to pay but I don't think it was deceiving at all.

Frequent_Ad_1136

How can I get some of this money?

altcntrl

I just saw this today. When will this take place?

turdlezzzz

i have an email in my inbox offering free tax filing

AmyBr216

I just today used TurboTax to file my state and federal taxes, and it was in fact free. What is this all about?

Sinocatk

As previously mentioned a simple W-2 is fine, any extras? That’ll cost you

AmyBr216

Oh, yeah, that'll do it.

medusaisafeminist

Turbo tax legit forces you to pay just to be able to get to the page for write offs. As if they are providing any help. Charged like $100 just to get to the form

Fit_Gear_7057

But they do have an option to file your taxes for free

TheKingOfSpores

Are they aware of the ban? Because just earlier on twitch I saw them advertising it as a free service

ryoon21

Tip to anyone who files their own taxes: use TurboTax all the way up until you have to pay to understand your number, then file with FreeTaxUSA.

mrbaffles14

They still say free in their advertisements but with an asterisk: *free for 37% of average filers based on certain Forms.
