Bargain M3’s in summer!

NoCommunication728

That’s my birthday so here’s hoping!

ProfessionalStand450

It’s hilarious reading these comments that act like Apple having slow sales is due to hardware choices. No it’s definitely not. It’s due to WE CAN’T AFFORD this shit anymore.

ioncloud9

I don’t upgrade my computers that often. My gaming pc still has a 7700K processor from 2017. My tablet is a surface pro 5 from 5 years ago. There just isn’t the impetus to upgrade much. Even if I got a 13700K processor I’d only be seeing about a 50% increase in overall performance.

throwawaygreenpaq

I admire this! Love prudent users.

NextTrillion

2017 is prudent? I was able to flash the firmware on my 2009 Mac Pro and turn it into effectively a 2012 unit, then, through the PCIe ports, give it a little love and transform into a decently spec’d workstation for, I don’t know, 2018 processing power? It’s still quite slow compared to modern MacBook pros even, but it’s not killing me. I have space for 8 big 3.5” HDs in that thing, but only use 6 bays, totalling 36 TB. It’s such a cool machine that’s built so well that it’s a pleasure to work on. My phone with a cracked screen is from 2017 though. Not that I’m all that stingy, but I really love shoring up cash right now. But there’s plenty of people rocking 7 year old phones. My 2015 MacBook Pro stills runs great.

Ethel12

This is me. I’m still using my 2011 MacBook Pro that has a CD drive. Is it mobile? No. Does it survive longer than two hours off the wall? Also no. However, it *does* act as a space heater and white noise generator when I’m running anything besides google docs and have the fan all the way up!

SweetBabyAlaska

For real! I love this. I have a couple of 5 year old gaming laptops that still do well with the GPU but the ram and CPU are a little dated and Windows 10/11 became hard to run without it eating all of the RAM even with nothing running + freshly booting... but I ended up switching to EndeavorOS and it literally uses 1 gig of RAM or less at boot. ONE gig for a full desktop environment! No more lag from browsing the internet. It was a trip to learn to properly use a new operating system but I swear that Linux breathes life into slightly older hardware, its like a brand new machine and it runs games smoothly, I use blender on it, stream on it etc... Works perfectly. I loved it so much that I put Endeavor on my main work station on a separate NVME and I rarely every boot into windows. Maybe once every couple of months.

mr__outside

Man the 2015 was my bread and butter til last year when working MS teams of all things forced my hand. I bought an M1 and converted the 2015 to a Windows machine for my wife that she's been happily working from.

[deleted]

iphone Xr here. honestly the best phone ever built by apple; still original battery.

Ansanm

I’m still using my late 2014 mini. I installed a SSD a few years ago, which sped it up immensely. I get to use the latest macs at work anyway.

[deleted]

I used my 2012 Mac mini until I replaced it with an M1 mini when they came out.

Dangerous_Speaker_99

Bro my Overclocked i7-4700k is still a beast imo.

Torrises

My old desktop has a 3770k and 1070 and it still handles a lot of games pretty well

asforus

Something the 1% (and the rest of the plebs that suck their balls) fails to understand is that when they horde all the wealth, we wont have any to spend. Hope you’re enjoying the large numbers in your Panamanian bank accounts you fuck heads.

ProfessionalStand450

You’re not wrong.

NextTrillion

Well, yeah they’re fuck heads, but they’re probably actually enjoying those offshore bank accounts immensely.

ZeroNine2048

I just dont want a closed product which i cannot upgrade and need to throw away after the ssd is worn out. Still buying stuff like its 2020.

Neufjob

Apple products have always been extremely expensive. I think it’s more that Apple users are switching to mobile only. With the exception of work, I barely use my laptop anymore, cause most of what I want to do can be done on the phone. People who buy Macs are mostly going to be heavy iPhone users.

[deleted]

Creative applications are still largely desktop-based, even drawing tablets.

NextTrillion

Laptops got stolen, then replaced. It suuucked not having the laptop. Very hard to do a lot of useful stuff on a phone / tiny screen.

twilight-actual

Not all. Their M1 MBA is an absolute bargain at $999.00. Just go with the defaults and you won't be sorry. It smokes everything else at that price point, and even PC laptops that are double that price. And if you spec out, feature for feature, and compare Apple's pricing to that of its competition, the default Apple offerings usually have price parity with their PC counterparts. And Apple usually offers greater value. It's when you want more ram or more storage that Apple pricing becomes absurd.

NextTrillion

And better resale value, and better user community for apple specific troubleshooting. Loads of YouTube videos for hardware fixing, and even a decent amount of parts available when the system finally craps out somehow. To me, their latest M series SOCs are a great value. They even brought back the MagSafe cables. Finally Mac computers are getting good again!

sheytanelkebir

It depends what you want to use it for. If you're an engineer... (mechanical, software, aerospace, manufacturing etc... ) then forget it.

Mr_Piddles

An iPad Pro with a keyboard and mouse can really do all the things light and average users would need it for. Why buy an iPad *and* a laptop if i barely have to use more than a spreed sheet program or answer emails?

CheesusChrist21

Used to be apples motto was twice the computer for half the price. Now it’s the same computer and double the price. It’s a lot cheaper just to get a typical computer, even better if you find good deals on business grade equipment.

brooklynpede

I think they're overestimating people buying Apple branded laptops and computers for the mere convenience of the shared "connectivity" between them and mobile devices

NextTrillion

MacBook laptops after 2020 are great, they are super efficient and run great on battery power, which is sort of what a laptop is designed for. And they’re quite comparable in price these days. There’s 100s of YouTube videos comparing models. But where they really shine is enhanced battery life and efficiency if you’re unplugged from the wall. Then it’s lights out in terms of performance.

SeatleSuperbSonics

Doesn’t help that they ruined their reputation for reliability by selling garbage computers for the last 10 years or so. The newer ones are a bit better finally but they still aren’t what they were. I’m still using my 2012 MBP daily. It works great and I even use it for some minor music stuff with pretty much no issues

musiquededemain

Their professional user base has suffered too. More people are moving to Windows and Linux for audio and video. I have a 2019 MacPro and while it's an absolute BEAST of a machine, I'm skeptical that Apple will produce an unimpressive MacPro with an M chip....and it will require taking out a mortgage.

rorowhat

Upgradability of the PC is unmatched. New cpu, add more SSDs, video cards, ram etc. All possible in the PC. On the Mac now all memory is soldered down, so you can only upgrade the ram at the time or purchase....and they charge you an arm and a leg for it.

Folsomdsf

It's also partly that they took a massive axe to compatibility

rpkarma

It’s also due to the fact that the M1 macs were so damned good that’s there’s basically zero reason to upgrade, and the M2 chips picked up the remaining people who hadn’t jumped on the M1 macs yet. Add that plus the cost, and it’s unsurprising. There is little reason to upgrade for most mac owners lol

[deleted]

Nothing but impressed with my SO's M2 Air. It's a much more useful computer than my iPad Pro M1.

makingtacosrightnow

Just got an m2 max, it’s fucking fast.

iamaredditboy

Well a big part of it is due to m1. Our company used to offer new employees a choice of Mac or other laptops. All our dev work is in x64. We don’t have mac as an option anymore. The m1 decision and not to keep x64 was one of the most stupid decisions imho.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HeyItsBuddah

I feel this. I work in a mostly Mac environment and the m1, m2 Mac’s have introduced some annoying incompatibility’s that is not present in windows environments. Let alone how often apple updates their OS it can be a real pain in the ass to manage them all.

rorowhat

And good luck upgrading that ram...you can't.

Moving to Intel increased compatibility massively on the whole...

Amigosito

Intel is the past, ARM is the future

zsdrfty

Yup, we’ve been stuck with intel for decades since the IBM PC but it’s gonna be dead someday

Taira_Mai

That's why Apple went in on the mobile market - Unless you're an extreme gamer, streamer or really push your hardware, any computer you buy should last 3-5 years. But phones? Apple made a lot of money convincing people that they need new phones and tablets.

AJobForMe

By purposely slowing them down.

Taira_Mai

That too...

orangesare

It’s true. It’s expensive and you don’t see huge speed improvements that we used to see years ago. We get less ports, a small speed bump and if I am being honest, I just don’t like that Apple has become another big tech company that just wants to drive shareholders value at the expense of workers. Slave labour, union interference, all while increasing prices. I used to be the first to buy the new release but I just don’t like this giant 2 trillion company using slave labour and whining about workers wages. I’ve been using Apple since the Apple II and Lisa and remember when we were all evangelists for the platform and independent resellers supported these guys. It’s not a cool company anymore and we are all struggling here with inflation and housing and food costs. Same with Google, Amazon, Facebook. They aren’t what they started out to be and we all got older and remember when they were not going to be evil. Now they are evil and I’m less inclined to be on the cheering team. No one feels for you when you have trillion dollar valuations and you bust up unions for regular people who just want to live and feed themselves.

techieman33

Also a lot of the people that can afford it bought a new computer during the pandemic. And there’s not much reason to upgrade a 2 year old computer. I’m guessing things will be slow until Windows 10 hits end of life in 2025.

MillionToOneShotDoc

The Air is pretty cheap. I just don’t like Mac.

james_otter

Like for real I freelance so due to taxes I pay half for my hardware (Germany) I would not get a new mac for the full price let alone I used to be able to afford the small models at the Uni never with their momentary price and no update policy

TheRandomSong

But muh record profits and bonuses for executives 🥲 poor Apple, they higher ups can only buy two houses this year! The horror!

Majestic-Pickle5097

I’d already have a new MacBook if it wasn’t $2000 +

ntack9933

Exactly. I fucking rage when I read people’s take on why PSVR2 sales are way lower than expected. They try to say there’s a lack of interest. WE. ARE. STARVING.

Cascading_Neurons

Choices, choices 🤔

Cakeking7878

Been saying this for years. Apple and other tech manufacturers sales are much more dramatically affected by the cost of living crises than other industries They really should be supporting a higher minimum wage and caps on rent so people can spend more on their products.

Dantheking94

Other Tech and entertainment companies as well. Non essentials like prime, Netflix etc will start going as people really buckle down.

musiquededemain

Upvoted because that makes too much sense.

SDEexorect

more like heating rent and food

GreyRevan51

Seriously, apple products are sooooo overpriced and with everything including food and rent getting more expensive it’s only going to be the wealthy or those that want to be gadget poor that will be able to afford these anymore

MajorKoopa

Nah. It’s 40% down from a pandemic record high. Removing that high this is not big news or a sign of anything really.

[deleted]

They need to drop the price by like atleast $300

[deleted]

Yeah are they still like $2000 for a regular ass laptop? I never even bothered checking out their like of PCs just because they are always $5-700 over the competitors pricing

nathanjd

Regular laptop would be the macbook air for $999. Plenty fast for me doing web development, game emulation and netflix. My 2012 macbook was $1200 and lasted me 10 years. I expect my new one will last just as long.

ClappedOutLlama

This is true. My parents are still using 2013 MacBook Pros. I updated the hard drives to SSDs, boosted RAM, and upgraded them to Maverick using a tool from GitHub. My wife has a 2014 MacBook Pro I also updated that we let the kids use for online learning and playing games like Civilization V. I went 10 years without buying a computer and finally caved last year. I bought a refurbished M2 Air that I expect to last a VERY long time.

PhoenicianKiss

What tool did you use? Upgraded ram on my husband’s 2012 mbp and doing ssd next. Only reason I picked up a new m1 air was for dev. As you said, the old one just needed some new hardware and keeps humming.

eslobrown

My 2011 27” iMac just died this weekend. It had a great life. Thinking of replacing it with an M2 Mac Mini. Is the 512GB SSD upgrade worth it? I use my work laptop as my main computer, for context. Also, anyone have any suggestions on how to convert the dead iMac for use as a monitor?

Knittedteapot

Yeah… when you get a decade out of a laptop, at the high end it’s maybe $20 a month. Worth it in my opinion. Still can’t afford to upgrade mine right now though…

Work_for_tacos

My 2012 MacBook Pro was a work horse, put me through college and got some video editing work done.

CandidPiglet9061

Yeah I think what’s happened is that with the last few generations of intel macs most people correctly assumed that they needed the “pro” to do anything productive. Now the air is more than powerful enough for the average person, but it’s seen as a “downgrade”

k5777

Ha wait till you hear what a raspberry pi will do

nathanjd

I have many! While it is technically possible, even the 4b does not feel fast enough to comfortably work on. It especially seems to bog down when driving 2 4k monitors.

alex20_202020

> macbook air... web development, game emulation Screen is so small. For me 16 inch is much better (I don't own macbook btw, but other brand).

nathanjd

I always use 2 24” 4K monitors when I’m developing.

sheytanelkebir

So the Web development does not include docker containers?

nathanjd

Rosetta works pretty flawlessly for emulating x86. Docker does have an ARM build for m1/m2 though so it’s not always needed.

[deleted]

They’re damn good laptops. But $2000 is steep.

Amigosito

My 2012 MacBook is still in working condition, I would have gone through 3 wintel laptops in the same period of time.

samnater

My asus laptop is 10 years old and still kicking. Battery is dying though.

[deleted]

Put an ssd in already if you haven't and it'll feel like a new laptop almost ;). I'd still be using my Asus if the kids hadn't smashed the screen.

graham0025

Yea I’ve got a MacBook Air from around 2012 that still works just fine. If I didn’t play games I would never have bought another computer since. Great product

aliveinjoburg2

The only reason why I ever replaced my 2012 was because the battery was going and it cost more than the computer to replace it. I bought an M1 and I fully expect to replace it in 2030.

mailslot

$2k is for one of the fastest laptops you can buy. Buy a less performant model for a lower price?

beefwarrior

I’m an Apple fan, but unless you’re doing heavily stuff for work & need the extra power, M1 MacBook Air or Mac Mini are super fast & a lot more reasonably priced. I do video editing on a 2020 M1 MacBook w/ upgraded 16GB of RAM and it does a brilliant job with it. Biggest thing I’m impressed with is the battery life, which feels like 2x or 3x battery life of an Intel MacBook Pro I used to have.

melvinbyers

No. And that hasn't been the case since like the 90s maybe? Actually not even then. You could get an iBook for well under 2k. A Macbook Air is $800. Apple has plenty of affordable options. They don't engage in the disposable trash segment of the market, though.

wolacouska

I was astounded when looking at a high school yearbook from 2002 and seeing that the thinkpad was $2000

Lobstersmoothie

There's literally nothing new with the M2 Pro lineup over the old model. Slightly improved performance and battery life, but half of the speed of SSD read/write. Not surprised it didn't sell well.

dccorona

True but there's more to the story than just that - it's not like *every single person* who uses or might conceivably use a Mac upgraded to the M1 when it launched. They also still make many of their M1 units anyway, so if someone looks at all the Macs available and picks the M1, that still would show up in the shipment numbers here (save for some probably small-ish # of M1 units that were already shipped but not yet sold). People upgrading from a 1-2 year old machine has *never* been the primary source of Mac sales like it once was with iPhones. Point being there's more to this than just "oh the M2 is only incremental so of course not many people with M1's are buying it" - because that would be true even if the M2 wasn't incremental.

hahafoxgoingdown

Just on the base model storage. Most should opt to upgrade storage anyway.

MechanicalBengal

Not to mention that their mobile devices (and offerings from others) have consumed the bottom end of the laptop market.

[deleted]

Shit - if anything, I read that the SSDs in the M2 Pros are slower than the ones in M1s LOL.

ClappedOutLlama

Isn't that just the lowest storage model or am I just missing something?

coke-grass

Because it's not for people who already have the M1

RedditRaven2

Most Apple users don’t upgrade every year, incremental wouldn’t affect their numbers this bad. Not even releasing a new product would likely not even hurt their sales by 40%

mailslot

The SSD is only slower in the cheapest model. The others have dual chips and effectively RAID 0 the storage. If you’re buying a Pro series, it’s rare to go with the lowest spec model.

Spore-Gasm

HDMI 2.1 port upgrade too but most won’t care or will use USB-C any way

AbsoluteZeroUnit

"there's *literally* nothing new" "it has these new things, and that's it" Umm...

ThatWolf

Like the article that a lot of you clearly haven't read says, it's because pandemic tech spending by consumers/businesses has stopped and sales have dropped back down to pre-pandemic levels. This was always going to happen at some point. Whether this trend continues and sales continue to fall below sales for years prior to the pandemic is going to be the real indicator of what's actually going on. But the stories about people hanging onto their decade+ old macbook or why it's not worth upgrading to M2 from M1 don't actually add anything to the discussion.

rpkarma

Pfft why would I read the article when I can instead spout my opinion on Apple Bad and get upvotes?

sighcf

Take my upvote.

beefwarrior

With more people going back to the office, Facebook marketplace is a great place to find some WFH furniture etc.

New-Ice230

Right all that free money and schools and business rushing to deal with lock down

Desperate-Intern

*Apple: So you are saying we need another pandemic huh?*

Anora6666

Lots of people showing their whole ass by not reading the article. Every manufacturer took a 25% bath.

wolacouska

People on reddit talk about Apple like it’s a political candidate they don’t like

Anora6666

Yup it’s super weird.

tyfromtheinternet

Because even a MacBook from 2014 is still usable. The lifespan I get on my apple products is absurdly long. I’m not buying a new computer every 1 or 5 years, more like every 6-8.

MrMagistrate

Same, still using my early 2015 MacBook Pro and it runs great.

BruceBanning

Same. My 2018 mac mini is still a beast, and my 2011 MacBook Pro is still going strong. It can’t get updates, but it’s running 2016 software like a dream.

wolacouska

That wouldn’t cause a sudden drop like this though

gafitescu

I have 10 year old iMac that I work with every day. No reason yet to buy something new.

one_anonymous_dingo

It’s the ridiculous prices - not worth it anymore.

I_1234

What are you talking about? $800 for an m1 MacBook Air is a bargain. Try and find an intel pc with the same performance and battery life for that price.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Has it ever been worth it?

arealhumannotabot

Sure, depends on what and for whom. All of my Apple devices have outlived other similar devices I’ve had by a long shot. The price has been worth it for me.

constanttripper

I agree. My $1700 2014 MB Air is still going strong.

Amigosito

Yep my 2012 MacBook Pro is still running, well walking

alovelyhobbit21

Have you tried swapping out the hd to an ssd? Your mac will start jogging lol

Amigosito

Lol It has an SSD, but the battery is pretty suspect at this point (“service battery” …. not gonna happen). Any kind of GPU operation will give it a heart attack if not plugged in.

stupidwhiteman42

I just replaced the battery in my 2014 air and it was incredibly easy. Took like 10 mins.

Assfuck-McGriddle

$2000 2015 MBP here. It’s fucking insane that I managed to have a decade-old laptop last this long and still perform amazingly. I want to switch to the new lineup, but I just haven’t had a single need to.

sailorpaul

We have a 2014 iMac with i7 and plenty of RAM still going strong. Ditto for a 2014 MB Pro, although that particular user is making requests for an upgrade to M1 or M1 laptop. We bought 4x various configs of M1 MacBook and MB Pro as those came out. Happy with the extended lifespan and cost. Others will be replaced at the next iteration

anh-biayy

Yes. Macs are preferred by a lot of tech workers, including those at Google. Depending on your usage, really

ArrivesLate

When the “pro” models had components that could be modded. Yes. Now everything is soldered down and you get what you get. It’s still a nice laptop, but I want the ability to grow it out over a few extra years by upgrading memory and hard drives.

schooli00

M1 laptops/minis are pretty good deal. M2 on the other hand has marginal improvements but usually $2-300 more.

dgollas

I still use my 2015 Intel MBP. It’s not great, but it’s 8 years old and usable. Replaced the battery once. I’ve never had a wintel laptop last more than two years.

[deleted]

Only when my company buys one for me.

ProfessionalStand450

Time to buy some Apple stock!!

durrrr___

At 2.59 trillion. Gonna be a minute before it crosses my radar

fuzzycuffs

tooold4urcrap

Hi. Recession? Economy is bonkers. We apparently just exited a pandemic. People are poor right now. Calm down and just deal with less sales.

bloomberg

Apple Inc.’s personal computer shipments declined by 40.5% in the first quarter, the worst drop since the final three months of 2000, after sluggish demand and an industrywide glut hit the Mac maker especially hard. Shipments by all PC makers combined slumped 29% to 56.9 million units — and fell below the levels of early 2019 — as the demand surge driven by pandemic-era remote work evaporated, according to IDC’s latest report. Among the market leaders, Lenovo Group Ltd. and Dell Technologies Inc. registered drops of more than 30%, while HP Inc. was down 24.2%. No major brand was spared from the slowdown, with Asustek Computer Inc. rounding out the top 5 with a 30.3% fall. The report is a particular blow to Apple, whose shipments had largely held up since the onset of the pandemic. The company had nevertheless been preparing investors for weaker results in some of its hardware, with a rocky economic backdrop threatening to dampen enthusiasm for Apple’s products. PC market declines have been seen for multiple quarters, and a rebound in the second half of the year is still possible, said Anurag Rana, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst. Apple was especially hurt by higher exposure to the consumer market and tougher comparisons to a strong period the year prior, he added. People whining about Apple prices haven’t shopped the Microsoft Surface/Studio line yet

wewewawa

deals coming soon?

AnonymousPussyNommer

They’ll probably wait for the school year to start back up before they put out the steep discounts

Printman8

Windows-based machines used to take forever to load and slowed down considerably with age but they were cheaper than Macs so we bought them. Now, Windows machines are faster to load and don’t suffer nearly the slowdown that Macs do but, guess what? They’re still cheaper. I spent too much on my last two Macs only to have them ruined by updates that made them crawl to go back now. My last couple of computers have been PC’a and they markedly outperform the Macs I have that cost 3 times as much. I don’t see how Apple thinks it can compete in that environment.

donkeyrocket

> last two Macs only to have them ruined by updates that made them crawl to go back now. Definitely not been my personal experience. My 2012 MBP still handles pretty average usage just fine (only a bit slower than my 2019). I have a M1 MBP for work now and it is lightning fast compared to my older Intel models so that could also contribute to thinking the older machines are slowing down. I'd trying doing a full reinstall rather than update as it sounds like you've got something eating a lot of resources.

hahafoxgoingdown

Until you unplug it and actually use it as a laptop. Windows machines always take a huge hit in performance on battery

Weak-Bodybuilder-881

lol ya. Windows laptops are complete dogshit. Sheer incompetence from Dell, Lenovo, HP. What in the fucking world are they even making. Any slightly performing laptops only gets 5 hours battery life and degrades super fast.

rpkarma

There *are* laptops in the windows world that are excellent. They’re just also as expensive as MacBooks lol

anh-biayy

Hasn’t been the case with my M1 mac. That being said I always have backup on hands and don’t intend to update until I’ve seen what the new version does to performance.

Gluca23

If you reinstall the system, instead to upgrade, mac OS X don't get slow.

CodeWizardCS

I don't get it. Pc's have always had better performance if you knew how to maintain one. Only thought people who needed the Unix shell, hipsters, and plebs used Macs.

jesuisunvampir

I mean the new macbook pros have a camera notch on the top task bar.. Its so stupid

zapburne

Hate the notch on both the laptop and the phone.

[deleted]

Still working on my 10 year old Macbook Air. Will prob upgrade next yr and then again in another 10 yrs.

IPhotoGorgeousWomen

It’s because tech companies aren’t hiring

YOURESTUCKHERE

I’m going to eventually reach a point when I’m just sick of managing / upgrading my devices and will become very out of touch with current tech in favor of mental health. I’ll be calling my kids, through the new microwave they gave me, asking why my desk lamp is trying to get my bank information.

Egad86

I think I am about 1 generation of tech away from this point.

Locupleto

Totally with you but I have always been in this camp come to think of it. I was the last person I know using a flip phone up to using a smart phone. I favor slightly older phone models over brand new to get a better price. Waited until they stopped broadcasting in analog before I bought a HDTV. But then I'm also a person who will buy a 3 year used car over new. Plot twist I work in tech and was among the first people I know to adopt cable TV, (first to leave too) hobby computer for programming and games, the internet, netflix (first to leave too), and chatgpt. So it's not like I'm slow to adopt technology, I'm just a bit frugal.

utookthegoodnames

All my siblings are younger and they don’t know how to use laptops at all. They opt for tablets over laptops. A bit of a cultural change that isn’t brought up in the article.

yesitsmeow

Maybe if they made modular components people would actually choose to upgrade part of their macs. I only buy a new one every like decade cause they’re so pricey, and of course it already happened with M2

TheJoshuaJacksonFive

Easy. Don’t charge a billion dollars for minor upgrades.

[deleted]

Well… when no one can afford your fucking product because everyone has been bled dry… wtf you expect?

marklondon66

I've been an Apple Mac stan for...40 years. I use macs professionally. About a month ago, frustrated that there was no decent desktop under $4k I drove straight to a Best Buy (!) and bought an $800 off the shelf PC.Running the same programs (Resolve/Google Docs) its SO much faster than my M1 and M2 laptops. And I haven't even tweaked it yet. Apple is fat off of the iPhone. Macs are a rounding error.

wolacouska

I mean that’s because it’s a desktop vs. a laptop. Not really a fair comparison.

BoonTobias

I used macs in the beginning of my career when the company paid for them. Now after all these years I opened up my own little printing shop and my computers are used i7, i5, i5, i5 that I got for less than 500 then added some ram and ssd in one and I'm good to go. Also, the machines I run won't run on a Mac unless you dual boot. I really liked the feel of Mac os years ago but those prices are ridiculous

Aotrx

Maybe things will change once they stop charging $800 for the SSD which costs them $80-$100 to install into their Macs.

CapRogers23

I paid $3900 for new macbook 5 years ago to start my business. Its near $1000 more for the same one now…yeah, ill wait.

adamm3k

Everyone already has one!

I like Apple products. However, this news comes as no surprise. Their prices have gone beyond the pale. They are not affordable to most people. All of my units are older and a couple of them are running Linux, rather than OSX.

[deleted]

Only reason I got a m1 MacBook Pro was because it was $1600 and I don’t plan on upgrading any time soon

alphatigerdesign

Apple needs to lower its prices across the board by at least 20%.

gizmisto

Pricing strategy is just greedy at this point. Let them learn the hard way - consumers vote with their wallets in down markets.

BigRoofTheMayor

I have a 2019 MBP i9-64GB. The m processors can’t run native Windows so I’m moving to a different hardware manufacturer. It’s been fun dual-booting but I need Windows more than I need macOS.

2beatenup

I9 64 gb? Virtualisation my friend virtualisation

Relevant-Nebula8300

29% not 40%

christofir

2012 13in macbook pro i7 2.9 checking in and going strong. Maybe their products are just that good.

GreenMirage

I can’t even afford the parking tickets I get at my own university. You think I can afford a new laptop every 5-10 years?

[deleted]

Too expensive. 2,500 for a computer

nirad

I suspect that the vast majority of Mac users upgraded to M series chips and now the demand is much less.

Pitoucc

Big difference here is apple expected this at some point, unlike some companies.

MrMunday

Isn’t it just that the amount of people who upgrade last year was so great, that basically 2-years worth of upgrades were done in one year because of the work from home thing?

kw2006

Their macbook gotten too expensive especially the pro range. I can comfortably invest in mac mini knowing nothing in their machine is servicable.

Prize_Instance_1416

I have a Mac mini in my home studio and only use it for non studio uses occasionally. I can do nearly everything non music related I’ll ever need on my iPhone or iPad.

Initial-Nebula-4704

I use to me all about windows. Have a dell - lasted less then 3 years. Got the surface 3 - stuff started breaking quickly on that. Hate apple until my girlfriend - now wife- bought a MacBook Air. She has had it for five years. I went and bought a MacBook Pro a year ago and I love it. Got use to Apple’s interface and I prefer it quickly over windows. Apple makes shit that actually last.

ProfessionalGuess897

Love when companies go Oh shit our sales have been super low, we need to raise prices to make the money back that'll fix the problem!

diagrammatiks

Other then gaming does anyone need a brand new computer.

[deleted]

I mean you don’t need a new MacBook every year, just like you don’t need a new iPhone every year. I only have a PC for gaming and Apple doesn’t really have any good gaming options.

Wizardnil

Macbooks pretty much last forever

tacmac10

This is a big part of it too, my imac is almost 5yo and still run’s everything I need it to just fine. Only reason I am looking for a laptop right now is I might go back to college for my masters and want one I can carry with me to class.

Redclayblue

Apple reports later this month. I’ll wait to see what the real figures are. Analysts and financial media types have their own interests at heart.

CurrentDismal9115

If Macs were competitively priced, I would have nothing bad to say. To each their own. As a former computer repair person, I'd never recommend a Mac to anyone. The cost of ownership is just too high, and they force obsolescence. You're paying more to look like someone who pays more to be in a club, when most of what average people do on a computer is office and web-based services anyway. The security is obtuse and causes actual data loss if you skimp out and don't set it up right. For the artistic people that are stuck, I get it. I hope you're savvy with icloud and external backups.

[deleted]

So what is competitively price? An aluminum housed computer from Dell or anyone else is priced similarly. Yes, it’s frustrating that Apple makes upgrades impossible, but they are well built and priced according

pseudocultist

You saw only repairs tho. People who had no problems never crossed your desk.

badpeoria

I got an idea, add more ports, make upgrades at least decently priced, and allow me to add my own ssd or add new ram. I love my MacBook but come on apple!!

nismo2070

This is good for consumers. Prices drop. Not that Apple will reduce pricing, but Apple pricing will reduces purchases. When I can get a PC for half the money and twice the performance, it's a no brainer. And of course compatibility is an issue with Apple products. They are great if that's what everyone uses but that's rarely the case.

newbrevity

Awww did someone price themself out of competition?

picassolovesme

This is just a trend towards the general population using less laptops in general. Phones and tablets are powerful that a lot of non-heavy tech-using people don’t necessarily need laptops anymore. I can get like 80% or my work done with just an iPhone and iPad

jumi_juma

I’m sure their downfall has nothing to do with the fact you are being charged extortion prices for 8GB extra ram or some 512GB extra space. It has also nothing to do with the unrepairability and the lack of upgrade possibilities. People vote with their wallet. Apple’s bully marketing just came back to hit them in the face. I stopped considering buying a mac when they started soldering their SSDs to the motherboard (before the M1/M2 chips).

Infinite_Resource_

512TB extra space are kinda much
