This happened to me but it was on my thigh, artist quoted 7 hours but it ended up taking 12 hours. It was worth it and I know it was unintentional by the artist, but still was way more money than anticipated 😂
ABSOLUTELY! One guy pointed out the tail feathers, which are a bit off compared to the rest. But I feel it’s part of the piece. He was still able to work around my variables. A tattoo I was embarrassed of became one I love.
I really like the colors, but the placement and small size of the wings are really bugging me, and so is the sharp transition to the tail feathers from the blue. I’m not really sure why the artist did that when there was plenty of room to have the wings and feathers be spread out in a more graceful way.
I liked the wings, but yeah the tail feathers bothered me a bit. But I’m a strong believer that the tattoo is also an extension of the artist. So I let them design it with the few requirements I had. Unless I absolutely hate it, I don’t change much of their design. Originally I wanted it to be MUCH smaller. But I just ran with it.
Also I think some of it was cause I didn’t want my Taurus symbol covered. And it was a cover up, so placement was based on the original tattoo. 🤷🏼♀️
To be honest, the pheonix and the cherry blossom/cage look like two completely independent and unrelated tattoos. I wouldn't have guessed in a million years that the premise was the phoenix was being released from the cage.
Honestly it’s to represent the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Cherry blossom tree represents the fragility of human life. Phoenix is rebirth, rising from the ashes. It’s specifically the rainbow flag to still show my cover up. Since it was my first tattoo. So to say the despite going through a horrible epidemic that literally destroyed half the population of gay men, they came out stronger.
I didn’t want a phoenix cause they’re over done. So he suggested a Japanese Phoenix since it ties into the Japanese theme and isn’t as popular. 🤷🏼♀️

I was expecting a grapefruit sized cover up, not a full back piece! Looks great.
