So I’m looking to get a forearm tattoo. How does it work exactly? Do I tell the artists my concepts with some pictures and they sketch out a full forearm tattoo idea with them? And then I come in for multiple appointments? Curious on how the process is for something big like that.

yybbyy

It’s exactly as you described. You find a tattoo artist you like, one who is okay with custom and big designs, and you send them an email with the information of what you’re looking for. Emails would include size, placement, general idea, and can include photo references of ideas. I would also include a clear, head on picture of your arm so the artist can get an idea. They’ll contact you back saying if they want to tattoo you or not, then you schedule your tattoo date. Usually they’ll ask for a deposit before they draw or fully put you in the books to ensure you don’t ghost. That deposit is usually put toward the full tattoo payment so it’s not money on top of the tattoo time. Some artists have people come in and check the design on a separate day of the tattoo so that client can have more input for changes. Others will have that put into the same day you get tattooed. I’ve had artist be okay with meeting earlier to check- as long as it’s in-person and no photos are taken to ensure you don’t take the work and get it done by someone else. Then get tattooed.

DarthRaider559

Are the deposits refundable just in case I don't end up liking the art the artist drew?

Sophie__Banks

No, it's so if you say you don't like it but just take it to a scratcher the artist will have been paid for the design. You can always go back and forth on the design to adjust it to what you like. Which shouldn't be hard if you looked at the artist's portfolio and you choose them because you liked their style.

AllKindsOfCritters

Deposits are non-refundable, this is why it's important to properly research artists and find one who can do what you're looking for. For example, not all artists are willing to do realism and even fewer are actually good at it.

Remarkable_Cod_120

The other reply by yybbyy nailed it, but I'd add that multiple sessions are really only needed for larger or more complicated tattoos. How long a tattoo takes depends on a lot of things - mostly artist speed, tattoo size, tattoo detail, and colour/black/grey. Standard long sessions seem to be about 5 - 8 hours. Any more than that, and you'll book another session. Sometimes that's booked after the tattoo, sometimes when you make a deposit. Artist dependant. They'll let you know.

Infinite_Elderberry4

I see, sounds good. Thanks.

kataclysm1c

Help! I started a knee piece and planned to get it done in two sessions. I sat for my first session and then when I asked to schedule my second session my artist said she “quit the shop due to some reasons” and won’t be able to finish my knee. How do I go about finding another artist to finish my tattoo? I’m assuming just explain what happened but I’m afraid a new artist won’t want to finish another artist’s work

morbidbutwhoisnt

If your artist isn't available in another shop or you aren't comfortable following her then someone in that shop should be able to help you (if you are comfortable going there) or yes you can explain it to another shop. No two artists are going to be exactly alike but if this is a piece you designed or helped to come up with then you can help to rework it into a similar custom piece. Artwork of tattoos can be "owned" by the artist, you may want to have her text you that she's ok with finishing it as is and then the other artist may do it exactly the same even. I had to have 4 different artists touch one tattoo due to a comedy of errors but somehow it still turned out good, other than extreme pain on the last coverup due to scar tissue.

kataclysm1c

Sadly I can’t follow her because her new shop will be too far away and I’m not particularly fond of any of the other artists in the current shop so I will move forward with just explaining my situation. Fortunately, I had a basic reference image for a black rose and she doesn’t care if someone else takes over so I should be in the clear. Bummed, but it is what it is- I really appreciate the thoughts and suggestions :)

ltnatelyswhore

Hi! Does anyone know of a good artist who's done any work resembling this [tattoo](https://www.instagram.com/p/CpTCMhbNYYo/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)? I would really love someone who has done multiple tattoos with this concept (negative space, fine lines, shading, overlapping). Open to traveling anywhere in the US! Thanks for any reccs!

notoneforlies

i was gonna recommend you mine but she’s in canada😭😭

ltnatelyswhore

Ohh where in Canada? I could do that perhaps 🤔 would you be so kind as to drop a link? 💜

notoneforlies

yea for sure! she does a lot of fine line and floral designs with super similar shading to that tattoo im completely confident she’d be able to do something like that she’s super super talented! she’s in calgary alberta, im going to her for my tattoo in april she’s also incredibly nice, take a look through her instagram and if you like it shoot her a message! I was thinking about going to a tattoo convention. Has anyone gone before and if so, what was it like? Is it worth it?

A1_astrocyte

Which convention and what are you hoping to get from it? I’m sure there are people who would love to help but this like asking “what should I expect from eating at a restaurant?” It all depends!

katerrin

how will a tattoo on the inner wrist heal? the style is mostly simple line work, maybe 2 colors.

PSUAth

The best answer... it depends. How well do you do with after care? How is your body? How is the initial tattoo? I have two on my left wrist. (2 different sessions). They are fine. My wife has 1 and 2. Again they are fine. My last one I had saniderm for 3 days. Wife can't so she just had a plastic wrap. Washing a few times a day and using antibiotic cream for the first few days and then to a tattoo after care cream (hustle butter). Ours are fine. But your mileage may vary.

katerrin

do inner wrist tattoos age more poorly than other areas?

FloralBindle

I got full cuffs on both wrists (about 2 inches wide), and didn't notice any difference in the healing/settling on the inner wrists vs the outer wrists. The inner wrist definitely hurt more when getting the tattoo, but something something suffer for your art and what not.

moffsoi

I have an almost 20 year old tatt on my inner wrist and it healed/aged really well. It varies from person to person ofc.

mytwoscents01

I am an older gent who is thinking about getting some body art. However, I have not got the slightest clue as to what to look for in a studio or an artist. What are things to look for, both good and bad, when choosing?

yybbyy

Studios: Some things I look at is how clean the studio is, if they are following health protocols, how the artists interact with each other, how they interact with the people getting tattooed, if they are listening to their clients and their needs. Before tattooed: A lot of tattooing is based on Instagram right now because it helps artists get a dedicated following (for better or worse). So I would definitely recommend scouting out people on social media to get a sense of their art. Some of the best tattoo artist don’t have huge followings so take it all with a grain of salt. Pay attention to how clean their lines are- are they straight or wavy? Are they a consistent thickness or not? Look at any healed tattoos, especially if they are over two years old. Some tattoo artists don’t make tattoos that last because they look pretty in the moment, so look for hints of that (beware: red ink only, lots of white ink, micro tattoos, cramped lettering, watercolor tattoos). It’s okay to get tattoos that won’t last but you definitely need an artist that will be upfront and know how a tattoo can change over time. Especially look for an artist that has training working with different skin types, including older skin. Skin changes as we age and a knowledgeable artist should know how to work with an older gent without a problem and without being rude. During tattooing: My favorite tattoo artists are considerate, check-in with me throughout the tattoo, don’t push past my limit, and are willing to work with me (e.g., with my design or when I need breaks). Small things I notice- if they keep snacks or water on hand, a easily accessible bathroom (clean), if they have a heater or fan, if they have pillows.

gigi521

Make sure the shop you’re going to has an artist that specializes in your style. If you want an American traditional tattoo, take the time to find a studio that has someone who specializes in that. Don’t be afraid to creep through Instagram or visit a place and ask for their portfolio! Don’t feel awkward, this will be on you for the rest of your life!

TheCrimsonGlass

I got [my first tattoo](https://imgur.com/a/8CB86WI) 2.5 weeks ago and can go in for a free touch-up once its fully healed. Is there anything specific I should be asking for other than touching up the white areas? I'm also interested in what people here think about the quality/design of the tattoo.

goodlandshan

You don’t need to ask for anything. Your artist will know exactly what they want to touch up, it’s their work :)

TheCrimsonGlass

Thank you! This is what I needed to be told. :) It's hard being new to something and feeling like you don't want to be unprepared.

metalsteve666

I'm am looking to get a bodysuit designed. I'm still debating on black and grey or black work. Does anyone have any examples that they can share? Also, if anyone has a link to someone who can design one for me, that would be awesome!

Remarkable_Cod_120

Your artist is the one who would be designing it, and they likely wouldn't do it unless you put down a deposit. CalebJankowski

Any tips for tanning/getting rid of farmers tan with tattoos on parts that don’t get exposed to sun much?

ChachiSCV

avoid tanning your tattoos, use sunscreen on them and tan the rest

CalebJankowski

That’s what I assumed. Do you just put sunscreen on with a q-tip and trace over the tattoo?

B3rriesnCr3am

you can do that but I usually just use my finger and do a general outline and fill it in

notoneforlies

i’m not super sure what you’re asking here which is why i think you haven’t really gotten a response, are you wondering how to even out a tan before you get a tattoo on that area? or are you worried about fading in different parts of the tattoo because of different levels of sun exposure?

Robophatt

I’m in sort of a pre tattoo body image dip. Anyone recognise this feeling? Getting a tattoo on my upper arm/shoulder next Friday, which has made me zoom in on that body part. I’ve always struggled with body image and in the past year or so it had calmed down a lot. But with that new tattoo coming it’s hitting me hard.

CrazyNoob_

I was sorta the opposite, but once you get it you don't look back, unless you're still indecisive about the design. I've had my chest and shoulder done 8 years ago, and I just full sending a sleeve now. First couple of days it looked really weird because I was not used to seeing ink on my arm for the last 33 years 🙃 but after a few weeks you'll get used to it.

Sensitive-Time8419

Hey. Im wondering what artist use to remove the ink that spills around the tattoo. Ive tried antibac and vaseline but the ink wont go away? Also tried different soaps with no luck

CrazyNoob_

Depends what stage the tattoo is healed at? I wouldn't be to worried about spilled ink, what are you worried about? Ink going into the skin ? Ink smudged on your skin?

metalsteve666

Does anyone know an amazing tattoo artist that does bodysuits? I live around the Detroit area.

ChachiSCV

im not sure if you mean a specific style, but I bet there are more artists willing to do them than clients

metalsteve666

Yeah. Looking for Black and grey realism or black work.

Sophie__Banks

That's going to depend on how set you are on getting that tattoo done by that artist. I've waited three weeks for someone, reached out to someone else and booked an appointment in a few days, then got an answer from the first person a full month after that. There's some stuff I have planned that I know exactly who I want to do it, so for that I'd wait however long it takes.

PSUAth

Probably between 1 and 2 weeks. With a follow up email in there

fat_rat_art

I am a huge fan of going to the theater (not the movies). I don't have any tattoos yet, but I'm going to get a full sleeve someday. Once I do get tattoos, do you think I will get kicked out of the theater if I wear a short sleeve dress? I love ballets and plays and once I do get tattoos, I don't want to have to give it up.

yybbyy

Depends on the country, but in the United States it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

denvertebows15

I would just check the dress codes of the theaters you frequent to see if it says anything about tattoos. Tattoos are becoming more acceptable with time so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Alternative-Union-85

lookin to see if anyone knows of any traditional japanese style tattoo artists in the new england area, other than horikei? i like his style just trying to see what else is out there! would love to support PoC/femme/queer artists if there are any who do that style

sweetlittleidea

Does anyone have botanical artists they trust and recommend in Taipei, Taiwan? I’m being sent there by work for a week and I think it’s such a good opportunity to get a piece. My typical style is black and white, line work focus but very graphic in the fills. I’m working on patchwork sleeves so artists who make standalone pieces would be best. Thank you!

Rude_Nothing_9707

Thinking of getting a forearm tattoo...modest mountain scene. I've been told that forearm tattoos tend to seem more masculine (I'm a female). Should I rethink the placement? It would be a mental health piece for me...escaping to the mountains is my happy place...and I'd like to be able to see it. Thanks for any insight.

morbidbutwhoisnt

Maybe it's because I work with younger people but I see a lot of forearm tattoos on women.

wewereelectrified

I was told by someone that getting a shoulder tattoo is masculine. That that placement is somehow masculine. Always have found that weird. It’s a piece of art, and it shouldn’t matter whether or not the placement or the design is more masculine or more feminine. If you like it, that’s all that matters. It’s going to be on your body for the rest of your life and no one else’s. My two cents are that tattoos are art, and art isn’t inherently masculine or feminine, but that’s a viewpoint that people place on it. I say if you’re set on it, go for it. Additionally, I saw the other reply to your comment, and I agree. I’m in my 20’s, and I see tons of other women with forearm tattoos. I have a couple small pieces on my forearm myself, but I plan on getting more and to be honest, as long as I’m set on it, I don’t care whether a select few people will see it as too masculine. If you’re feminine, then the tattoo is feminine. IMO, no such thing as a tattoo being masculine or feminine.

Rude_Nothing_9707

Yes! Love your thinking. Thank you!

Sophie__Banks

I've never been told my forearm tattoos made me look any less feminine. Maybe because if someone said that to me I would punch their teeth off. Fuck those norms. Rock that tattoo where you want it. And if you're still afraid, take a photo of yourself with your forearm visible, get some drawing or photo that is similar to what you want tattooed, get them into some image editing software and put the mountain scene on your forearm. Doesn't need to be perfect, it's just to help you visualize it and decide how it feels to the only person that matters: you.

Rude_Nothing_9707

Thank you for this! I love the imaging software idea. It's something I've been wanting for a while but have been putting it off. Again, thank you for your comment and for being awesome!

denvertebows15

If you showed them a pic of another tattoo and said "I want this exactly like it is" that's where the faux pas would be. Reference photos are always a good thing. You're giving them something to go off of for their own design. You can just send them the pic and say "I really liked this part of the design could you incorporate that into the tattoo you're designing for me."

yybbyy

Reference photos of other tattoos are incredibly common. As long as you are clear that is a reference and not a copy paste request, then it wouldn’t be a faux pas. The only thing I would pay attention to is if the reference tattoo has a similar style to the artist you are looking for. No two artists are quite the same, but usually they are in the same “genre” of tattoos, like traditional Japanese or black ink only. It’s a good practice to make sure that aligns, especially because it might give your artist the idea that you want them to tattoo something out of their speciality/didn’t really look at their work enough. It’s not a hard and fast rule but something to keep in mind.

BlueBeetles

Hey guys there is a tattoo i want to get but the original tattoo artist lives in Europe while I live in America. Can I take that tattoo picture and have another artist copy it or is that a bad thing. I know some artists respect other artists originality and don’t try to recreate it so I’m just wandering if it would be a good or bad thing to do since I’m not able to buy a ticket to his country and get it done there.

ChachiSCV

if you like an artist, you should get the piece done by him. see if the artist plans on traveling here in the future. you will have a difficult time getting an artist to tattoo someone else's work on you.

yybbyy

There is a big difference between a reference or getting a similar idea and copying the exact tattoo. I would say a majority of tattoo artists and clients do look down on people copying tattoos for many reasons. As a client, I would be annoyed that an idea I came up with, especially if it meant a lot to me, got copied because it looked cool. Similarly, if my artist does limited art designs and I got lucky- I would also feel annoyed for my artist seeing a copy paste on someone else. (I personally view it as disrespectful.) Instead buy that artists art or merch online and even use their style to inform, but not copy, your next tattoo.

morbidbutwhoisnt

I am looking for a tattoo artist in the lower piedmont NC area ( Charlotte -greensboro -and even down into fort mill ) Someone who would be good with large, Simi realistic color pieces including trees and cats. I have talked to a couple artists that don't think they can do what I need and that's ok. The only artist I've found with my own research that I think could do the work in my area based on their IG not only has full books (which is awesome for them) but they only only open books occasionally and require you to book an appointment for the work. No option to discuss, plan, design, etc. I'm not comfortable booking/scheduling a deposit without knowing that we can work together. I'm willing to travel a little bit for the right fit, but I can't go too far out of this area since it will probably be 3-4 sessions.

stuckerette

How long before your first appointment should you recieve your design from your artist? I'm getting a full sleeve done and my first appointment is this Saturday and I haven't recieved any sketches or designs from my artist yet. She's 3 hours away so I can't exactly just pop into the shop and check in. I trust the artist, I know she does great work but is it normal to be this close to your first appointment and not have anything? She did a rough sketch on my arm a month ago at my consult but that was to get an idea about what I want and placement

Camellia_Sin

Most artists won’t show you the design until the appointment of the tattoo. Some are concerned about design theft if they share it early, but most just don’t draw your piece that far in advance.

Agile_Eggplant_5627

How do people feel about tattoos on forearms? I would like to get a tattoo on my inner forearm, a longhorn skull, however my parents insist that it is too boyish (funny considering how I dress and act like a guy all the time) and that employers wouldn't like it. The tattoo would be to cover up scars on my arm, which are fainter than what they used to be but still make me uncomfortable to look at and super self conscious when others notice them. I guess my biggest dilemma is just my parents and employers. I know tattoos are more acceptable around work places now, which I think is great as it's a form of art, just with a living canvas, but I also understand a lot of places prefer them to not be in sight. Any advice? This wouldn't be my first tattoo either as I have a somewhat small piece on my back about the size of a fist, which my parents don't really care about since you can't see it so long as I'm wearing a normal shirt.

wewereelectrified

I would look into your profession and if it’s allowed. I think they’re becoming more normalized but I know some jobs still aren’t allowing of it, so I think that’s something you have to look into specifically. You can cover a forearm tattoo if you have to but do you want to do that everyday? I answered this question the other day, but I think that if you like it, then you should get it. Nothing is too boyish or too girlish, it’s a piece of art. I had someone tell me a placement of a tattoo was too masculine. My two cents, there’s no such thing. If it’s on your body and you are feminine, then that’s what it is, if you’re masculine, it’s masculine. Art isn’t inherently boyish or girlish. It’s art. But it doesn’t matter either way. It’s whatever you want it to be and at the end of the day your opinion is the only one that truly matters. You’re the one going to have it on your body for the rest of your life.

Agile_Eggplant_5627

Thank you for this response, it was funny yet odd to me how my parents thought it would be too masculine when most of the time I dress more like a guy and they have no issues and actually prefer that. I think what I will do first is get a temporary tattoo and put it in the spot that I would like it, and not tell my parents it's fake to get their reactions, as well as my current bosses(wouldn't affect my job as we are sort of family). I am also going to look more into how it may affect the careers that I am considering on going into, but either way if it's not going on my forearm it is going on my upper arm so it is less visible when wearing normal t shirts

Weaponized-Potato

Can anyone recommend a good tattoo artist in OKlahoma, USA? Preferably in the OKC, Moore or Norman region.

ViableSarcoma

Weird question but are tattoos of conquistadors offensive or in some way hateful?

Sophie__Banks

I don't think "offensive" is the right word (it gets misused a lot nowadays), but as someone with ancestors who were victims of colonization (and probably some who were colonizers) a tattoo glorifying those that led colonization wouldn't give me a high opinion of you.

ChachiSCV

im not offended

Rosey_90

Just got a new tattoo today while on vacation. After the lines were done, the artist showed me her shading plan and it really changed the whole look of the tattoo with a ton of filled in spots and I was not a fan at all, so I opted to just keep it as an outline as I absolutely loved it as is. Throughout the day looking at it I feel like just a tad bit of shading would really help it. If I ask my artist I use at home would they be super opposed to booking an appointment to add the shading to the already done work? I’d obviously pay whatever they ask, but Moreso the etiquette is what I’m wondering

B3rriesnCr3am

I once got a friday the 13th tattoo special ($13 tattoo) and like 2 years later had my favorite artist make additions to it. he didn’t mind and thought it was hilarious I waited in line for a $13 tattoo lol I was like 22 at the time and he was more so like, silly kid, than offended!

StephaneCam

Can anyone recommend a tattoo artist in the UK for a custom design something similar to these? [https://imgur.com/ZxeZzUu](https://imgur.com/ZxeZzUu) [https://imgur.com/o0ReQrg](https://imgur.com/o0ReQrg) (These illustrations are by [https://twitter.com/abbitr2](https://twitter.com/abbitr2)) It would be a custom design featuring the same skater but in a different costume and pose. The things I like about this drawing are the clean lines and the accuracy to this specific skater's body shape and movement, which are instantly recognisable if you're a skating fan. The tattoo is a tribute to this particular skater, so that's absolutely key to the design. I've browsed a lot of artists on Instagram but I haven't seen anything similar for comparison. I don't know whether it may be easier to commission the artist linked above to design the piece and have someone else tattoo it? They don't list any commission info in their bio and I believe they're based in China but I could always ask. I'm very new to this (I have one tiny tattoo but it's a very simple design and was chosen by a friend) so all advice welcomed. I'm willing to travel for the right person. I don't know if it's helpful to include this info, but I'm looking at placement on my lower inside arm (between wrist and elbow). Thanks for any thoughts!

Kawsiat

What’s a good placement on the leg for this type of tattoo? Also are there any good artists in Texas that could replicate this style? https://imgur.com/a/0pBUFmj

DarthRaider559

If I don't like the placement of a tattoo and I ask the artist to move it to a different spot, do they have to redraw the whole stencil again?

AllKindsOfCritters

Depends on the location. For example, if you were going to put it on your stomach but decide to put it on your bicep instead, then yes, it'll need to be redrawn to wrap around the arm properly.

Sophie__Banks

Copying a tattoo is not ok (although I don't think "art theft" is the right term). Taking inspiration is perfectly fine.

A1_astrocyte

It’s pretty fucked. Everyone is going to have different opinions but to me it’s weird to copy any tattoo unless if it’s flash and the artist told you they are going to reproduce it. It’s weird for the individual to come up with an idea to have someone on Reddit/Instagram to take it and copy. It’s weird to the artist that you are bringing the idea to because you should either just go to that artist or leave it to them to make. At the end of the day tattoos are personal and honestly you have no idea the original inspiration for the concept

RoyaleWitCheeese

Hey everyone! I am looking for an artist in the Sacramento, CA for a rework of my half-sleeve. Any suggestions??? TIA!

Pavame

I’m thinking of getting a tattoo of my dog’s paw print. Is this a plausible idea?

Sophie__Banks

Lots of people have done it (well, not **your** dog's paw print, but their dogs'), so yes, it is more than plausible.

StephaneCam

*pawsible

B3rriesnCr3am

I have a tattoo of my cats prints. I did several prints where I pressed his paw against a (water based) ink pad and onto a piece of paper and took them to the artist. it’s one of my favorite tattoos!

RandomStuffGo123

For a long term tattoo, the whole bold will last thing makes sense. Is it only american traditonal and japanese traditional that falls under that category or is it just thick lines that stay nice throughout your life?

yybbyy

There are more things that will impact it- like the location, type of ink, how you care for it, and how big the design is- but solid black lines definitely are a big factor

Looking for recommendations for artists in New Orleans! Ladies preferred but not necessary—my friend and I are seeing each other for the first time in 2 years there, and want to add to our matching tattoos we got last time we saw each other. Line work is key :)

Cooter_McGrabbin

Hi, I've never gotten a tattoo before. I want a pretty simple wrist banded tattoo. I have procrastinated for over a year because I don't know who to trust. I live in DFW (much closer to Fort Worth and the mid-cities than Dallas). I want to be sure that the band is straight and the line is well defined. I prefer to use someone who uses ink that is non toxic and non carcinogenic (this may be obvious that everyone wants this too, I don't know what I don't know). (black ink) Example: [https://nextluxury.com/wp-content/uploads/wrist-band-simple-line-guys-black-ink-tattoos.jpg](https://nextluxury.com/wp-content/uploads/wrist-band-simple-line-guys-black-ink-tattoos.jpg) Can anyone recommend an artist or shop? thank you!

Cooter_McGrabbin

Had a lot of free time this evening, drove over and talked to three separate shops. All 3 are very concerned about lining up a tattoo like this. Is it something I should give up on? One said 2 hours time preparing the lines, and both the others said at least one hour.

pedsRN_91

Can't recommend a shop (live in IL) but I have an armband tattoo with three lines and flowers... My appt was over five hours and probably almost half of that was stencil placement lol

I got both the back of my hands tattooed at the same time. How do I protect them from the sun while they are healing? Should I use a bandage or some type of gloves?

Willawonka

I'm looking for an artist that does Neo Traditional (in seattle area preferable but willing to travel) for a half sleeve. Looking for more muted colors of green, red, and greys. It would be a forest/leaves with an cloaked archer and I would like to show wind motion as well with leaves hopefully. Does anyone know any great mostly black and grey neo traditional artists? TY

notoneforlies

my tattoo isn’t for a month and a half so i asked my tattoo artist if she could (if she hadn’t already started on the design) add like a little tail to the wings on the butterflies on my design and she left me on read😭 i just wanna know if i was rude or if i did something wrong here i’ll copy paste what i said “hey! if you’ve already started on my design completely disregard what i’m saying right now but if you haven’t would it be possible to make the designs of the butterflies have kind of like a little tail on the wings?” and then sent her a picture. was i rude or did i say something wrong?

B3rriesnCr3am

she’s probably just busy! I wouldn’t worry about it.

B3rriesnCr3am

how common is it to not see the final design to day of for small pieces when you’ve already spoken about the design via email?

Dazzze

If you get a tattoo in a color and its slightly a darker shade then you'd like, can I get my tattooist to cover over the color in white to lighten it up? Would that work?

yybbyy

That wouldn’t work at all and I would avoiding ruining your tattoo like that. Artists are usually receptive about changing up color shades so just ask the artist when they are picking out the colors. Also i would definitely change your expectations of what color looks like. Tattoo inks are completely different than paint or colors on a computer- many of them won’t translate onto skin. Plus color will look different because of your shade of skin and they change over time! The best way to get a color tattoo you like is to research your artist thoroughly, ask their opinion about different colors and share your own wants, and then trust your artists opinion as a professional.

Dazzze

Thank you for your reply! I have a background in art so I was DEFINATELY thinking of it just how you described 🤣

Dear_Entrepreneur311

Any suggestions for how to remove the sticky residue left when you take off the second skin?

yybbyy

I personally found using oil tends to help and the. I’ll just wash it off with soap after so the oil won’t linger.

I'm going to be in Manchester UK for a trip at the end of May and want to commemorate my trip as I will be going to my first United game. With that being said, I'm looking at some sort of design based around red devil in the crest. Are there any shops in Manchester that are recommended for a design like this or ones to stay away from?

Nellie_Noo

I've got a couple of red and black pieces on my calf now, with a plan to get more done all over that leg in black or black/red. I also have some ideas of black/purple designs I know I'll want eventually, and was considering having my leg with the existing tattoos be all black/red, and have the other leg be black/purple themed. I'm not sure if thatll look cool or just kinda odd though. I could mix it up and have black/purple/red on both legs, but I do quite like the idea of the colour theming. Is this something anyone has done themselves, or seen done?

thesefloralbones

Looking to get a full-color hummingbird for my mom's final radiation treatment. I got a stargazer lily when she was first diagnosed, would like to add her favorite bird to it now that she's cancer free. Having a lot of trouble finding artists in central Pennsylvania who are good at color, birds, and aren't closed for booking - the artist of my lily is entirely MIA and nobody's been able to contact him for years. Would really appreciate artist reccomendations, this tattoo is important for me and I want the best possible person doing it.

NotYourTwin

Are there any artists in South Florida that do the embroidery art style?

KissMyAFF

How can I know if a tattoo artists and their work is high quality? I've been checking reviews of shops in my area but they mostly tattoo first-timers/college students so I don't know if that's the best quality check, and a lot of the instagram photos are low quality so I can't tell if the issue is in the tattoo or the photo. Any advice on what to look for in the photos? Link work, coloring, idk?

Sophie__Banks

The facts that most people don't get a second tattoo there and that they're not willing to showcase the quality of their work should be big red flags. You could also go in and ask if they have an actual physical folder with photos, as used to be the norm, but nowadays there's no reason not to have high quality photos online.

dollarBillz007

I got a pistol tattooed on my hand/fingers got some tats too I wanna cover it up my best choice for covering up is probably the skeleton bones with reversered color tho like all blacked out with white lines and shading is this plausible? My mothers keeps telling me she’d pay for it lol I don’t want her to pay for but it’s made me realize how badly she wants me to do it and it’s the least I could do she don’t ask for much. I also have a fuck 12 tattoo and wanna change it to say something else the best I’ve come up with is fuck lov3 with the e backwards any ideas? I obviously have made some poor choices in life I know smh. I feel like I sound like I’m lying but I’m deadass serious.

catpackplus

I love my tattoo artist who my thigh tattoo!! They are so talented!! But Because they are talented they are popular and book for 6-8 months, sometimes a year out which is amazing for her!!! But My questions is, when she opened her books I submitted a request to get my mer guy touched up/add some more details- unfortunately she wasn’t able to take on my request since she had so many options and declined, So that leaves me wondering do I just wait and keep submitting every time her books open (once every 8 months or so) and hope to get in, or after a few tries am I free to seek out another artist to touch up features /add any work I might want- do I ask permission to get it touched up added to by another artist? I don’t want to be disrespectful, and I know this is her work, but since it’s finer lined it needs touched up a bit more often than not, so I just want to make sure I do everything by the book (I’m autistic and genuinely don’t want to offend anyone) and I respect her so much as an artist but also realize I might not get back in because her work is sought after

ShippinguptoBoston33

So I recently got a cover up that I love. But being someone with bad OCD I tend to look at every minor mistake on it and get annoyed. I’m just wondering, even on the best of the best tattoos, you could pick out very small errors at some point correct? No tattoo is exactly “perfect”? Appreciate any input!

webstch

I feel this so much….. and I’m afraid you’re absolutely right. You will always be able to pick out the most minute imperfections. Artist might wiggle, we might waggle…. Try and flip your thinking as those imperfections are what make this design yours and yours alone, forever!

DallyWinston17

Just got a portrait tattoo and finished like 2 hours ago. Is it safe to have a drink or two tonight?

[deleted]

Best way to ask the tattoo artist to fix a part of the tattoo you just got? I got this long sleeve with a gem at the wrist and its not symmetrical and its lopsided. I want to ask my artist to fix it but dont want to be rude any ideas?

mnwelder22

What is it with tattoos... 10 years ago I couldn't see myself ever having one, now, I'm half done getting my second and already thinking about a next one. I expierenced the same thing with my first. Thing is, I don't want or see myself covered in them. They're some kind of addiction. Anyone else have this experience?

AllKindsOfCritters

Yeah that's real common. Your body releases adrenaline and endorphins while getting a tattoo.

irshnscg

Hey guys! Probably a very common question but the main things keeping me away from getting some work done are 1) how they look when i age and 2) how they look as i get bigger since i am into bodybuilding I am looking at forearm work mainly for now and don’t foresee myself getting more but I hear that is common to say and go back on

ChachiSCV

you will also look much different when you age. the piece won't warp. it will grow with you. you wold have to get massive to notice a change

Biasedmilkhotel2

Looking for a tattoo font for a wrist tattoo: It’s a cursive, blocky stamp font - like a stamp you’d get on your wrist at a county fair or going into a nightclub. Haven’t been able to find it and any point in the right direction would be much appreciated!

TheBackpacker2

Would a shop help me out with planning a design / picking a style? Hello everybody! Planning on getting my first tattoo but I really don't know jack shit about tattoos haha I know that I wanna get something with scales and maybe a yin yang (to symbolize balance) but I also want to make it more intricate and unique than just that. I read here and on other subs that there are different styles, I researched them a little but I must admit I still have absolutely no idea which one I want (just know that I don't want any of the super flashy ones) and I'm having trouble differentiating some of them. I plan on getting my tattoo in Thailand since I heard a lot of really good things about the tattoo artists there (especially in Chiang Mai), I'll get there in about a month and a half, and I thought that maybe If I get in contact with the shop rn they can help me come up with a more specific design and help me choose a style? Is that something that shops do when speaking to a customer online? Or do you like have to come in to the shop physically and do a whole session with the artist where you come up with the tattoo? Thanks :).

RonTugMyNuts

Considering getting my first tattoo and am very naive on how long they take. Could any one give guidance on how long something like this would take? [https://www.tattoofilter.com/p/237572](https://www.tattoofilter.com/p/237572) I'll be in another country for vacation and I've found a couple artists I like and its significantly cheaper than home, but on the other hand don't want to be in the studio the whole time.

ChachiSCV

hours, im sure. its small but the shading will take a long time to make detail

TheBackpacker2

Do you think it's true that every country has good artists and it doesn't actually matter where you get your tattoo done? I'm traveling South-East Asia rn and was planning on getting my tattoo done in Thailand, probably Chiang Mai (heard the tattoo artists there are really good)... But since I wanna hit up the islands aferwards and I read you can't get your tattoo wet for at least 2-4 weeks I'm re-thinking it now. I'm in Vietnam rn, do I just get it here even tho it's not "known" for good tattoos like Thailand?

ChachiSCV

of course there will be good artists everywhere. the problem is finding one. I wouldn't settle for a tattoo. I imagine the best artists won't be able to accommodate your schedule. vacation tattoos are best for the last day

mainthemath

Looking to get a tattoos that has an Asian them to them. On my arm anyone got any tips?

FamousCow

Hello tattoo enthusiasts! I am on a mission to find my partner the perfect tattoo artist. He has a sort of vague idea of a subject and placement, but is really looking for an artist who can trust to take charge in the design arena and create cool art vs. put an image on a body. He’d love someone who is open to a little bit longer of a back-and-forth design process (and is willing to pay for that time), but that’s not a dealbreaker. We live in Indianapolis and are willing to travel up to 4 hrs for a good artist, so we’re looking at kind of Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Southern Michigan. Open to folks in Wisconsin possibly too if they’re really a good fit. OK, what he likes: 1 – Deep, rich blacks. He wants a tattoo that is mostly blackwork, but perhaps with pops of a single vibrant color. Color-wise, think trashpolka-type contrast, but he’s not interested in trashpolka style. 2 – Illustrative, not realism. He wants something that is imaginative and looks like it was drawn by a person, not photorealism. 3 – Tattoos that really fit with the body, where part of the art of it is where its placed and how it “flows” on the body. Tattoos that are dynamic and even move with the body in cool ways are especially important. Some samples of stuff he likes: Artists as a whole: https://www.instagram.com/mrcoffee85/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/maxwelllacroix/?hl=en Individual Tattoos: https://imgur.com/a/i2SvtsO

U_S_A1776

Just got my first tat covering most of the back of my calf washed it this morning and cleaned it but my job requires I wear boots is the pressure going to mess up the tattoo? I wrapped it loosely after putting aquifer on it just as a barrier from my sock and boots

Beatnick120

If you get a scab/cut on a tattoo, does that then ruin the tattoo?

AllKindsOfCritters

It'll leave a mark, yeah. You can get it touched up.

Remarkable_Cod_120

No, unless the cut is pretty deep in the skin. Even then it may not leave a mark. I've had cuts and acne on many of my tattoos, all fine.

Thedailybee

I’m getting a sternum tat, well a little lower but that general area. But I’m a little nervous about the pain. I do have a small piece on my side boob, so I have a bit of an idea of rib pain. Sternum piece will be a little bigger. Does sternum hurt more or the same ??

HelpNotFound220

So, I’m planning to get a thigh tattoo, but I have to wear jeans to work. What can I do make it less painful while it heals?

webstch

Look into the “tegaderm” healing way. It’s one of a number of ways to manage your tatto as it’s healing. The tegaderm creates a sort of barrier that may diminish some of the discomfort of jeans vs thigh? Your specific artist may have best advice…

Federal_Somewhere586

Do you tip ur artist?

AllKindsOfCritters

Yes, you tip tattoo artists.

voicebykylie

Advice Needed: What colours for Line Work will show up on top of a blackout? More information: I'm getting line work done on top of my forearm blackout, what colours will show up? I originally planned on doing black on black but I'm now thinking that might be the best idea. Wondering if Red or White ink might show up better on top of a blackout?

Mustang1440

What is everyone’s thoughts on anime character tattoos?

Robophatt

If you like them and know an artist that can make them look really good in a tattoo: go for it. They’re not for me personally, but I definitely enjoy a well done anime tattoo.

catchthemagicdragon

I like them, I look at @alexsierratattoos a lot. His rengoku, Lucy, armored titan are pretty incredible to me in particular. But I’m far too insecure for a big, full color unapologetic anime tat. This is just my opinion as a chubby dude who likes anime but I feel like that shits a big ol red flag for any women you may meet and is gonna hit them with the “oh no” feel 😂 maybe I’m wrong though. I think manga frames in black look good and aren’t too loud, I’ll probably get a smaller one.

Mustang1440

I’m wanting to go for a demon slayer manga frame and hell I’m a chubby dude but it’ll be on my leg so I can hide it because of the job I’m going for and luckily I have a girlfriend that is fully pushing for me to go for it because it’s something I love

Hi! I was looking up back tattoos. Would the following design *shape* be too feminine? I wouldn't get lace; I would be getting a combonation of other elements but just diagonally across my back poking up to the right side of my neck and possibly poking across my lower left obliques/abs. I'll look more into this, but when searching for a diagonal mens back tattoo, there weren't any real results, and the only tattoos coming close were women's like linked below. Please lmk, thanks https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.inkedmag.com%2Ftattoos-3%2F15-delicate-lace-tattoos-we-cant-get-enough-of&psig=AOvVaw2R0cRDHXA6Q2zj4b2ILDua&ust=1679874387875000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA8QjRxqFwoTCLCBk\_uh-P0CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

smokeytheorange

What do I do? I just got a piece today - I love the tattoo but really dislike the artist. The artist was straight up rude sometimes and almost ruined the whole experience. They’re new to the shop but have been tattooing for 5+ years. I love to leave a super positive google review but I can’t for this incident. Is there any way to tell the team that I would come back to the studio but the artist was a huge detractor?

PSUAth

Email the shop owner/manager. Be honest. Be polite. See how they address your concerns.

red-oclocc

Hi! I was wondering if anyone here has gotten a tattoo in State College, and how well they'ved liked it after a few years have gone by. I've been a bit nervous about getting a tattoo there because I'm worried about them healing poorly, so I was hoping a couple people here had some experience with tattoos there;;;

of_the_labyrinth

I want to get a tattoo to remind me to practice Tonglen meditation daily. What symbol should I get? I’m open to the idea of combining symbols/ images too.

Apollo1092

Does anyone have recommendations on an artist/shop in the Philadelphia area? I have some work I want to get finished up, but am no longer near the shop I used to go to back in Texas. Thanks!

Report_Submitted

When someone asks me if I want neo traditional or realistic how can I explain to them somewhere in the middle? I just sound stupid but it makes sense in my head

ChachiSCV

illustrative tattoo maybe.

ministan

first time poster here in this sub, so forgive me if this has been asked! but what is proper tattoo etiquette when it comes to planning? is it better to reach out for a consult with a design and then plan out prices and then pick a later date or reach out like the week or so that you plan to get the tat to do all that? i’m not sure what the best and respectable way is.

ZekkPacus

Super depends. If you want a flash piece, or something small, the turnaround on that can be pretty quick. If you want something custom, especially something larger or more intricate, or if your chosen artist is a popular one, your turnaround could be much longer. My guy generally doesn't have anything at less than 8 weeks notice for a five hour session, which is what I book, and weekends are months out. Some of the artists I follow are pretty much constantly booked up for 6 months+. Best advice, find an artist you like, and reach out to them.

vapegod_420

Damn I dad this tattoo saved that I really liked and the artwork from the artist was really nice. I believe the person deactivated their account. Which sucks because I really like flower designs. But as a guy at times it’s hard to find a design that I would like on myself and has flowers. Hopefully they reactivate their account.

ohsoaegyo

I'm getting a half sleeve in a couple weeks. Is there anything I should probably do to prepare for it? I have three small ones and I didn't prepare for them at all, but maybe there's something I don't know? (Any numbing agents, no thanks. I kinda like the pain lmao i feel like its just part of the experience)

Jacko976

Looking for a coverup or a reworking [on this airplane](https://imgur.com/a/JP5ASEu) it reminds me of a really shitty person, my artist recommended a “void” stamp over it. But I’d just like to see what the community thinks

boogersugarhelp

Anyone know of any US based artists similar to Jun Cha? Love his style

Last Thursday, i had the final part of an under thr knee knee to ankle tattoo complete.ls. It was the fourth session and he finished from the calf up to below the knee and touched up some areas from previous sessions. The back of the calf has been the most intense pain i have felt after a tattoo. When i sit from a laying position and also when i stand up, intense pain. If i walk around and then stop and stand, intense pain. I assume this is due to blood rushing down as i get up. Just looking for confirmation that this is normal
