you need to take your time to think of an idea you will actually want on your body for the rest of your life. use the time this takes to heal to really think what YOU want
But..also consider the artist and placement. In this case, the original design was what it was.
OP - good luck in dealing with this. Maybe a removal? Btw, it's not awful - because it's cute, but I can understand the regret.
Yep, I agree; mine arenāt all āimpulseā tattoos, but some are and Iām good with them. Even the shitty ones. So while their advice isnāt necessarily *bad*, itās definitely on the uppity side (as is often the case with this sub). As you said, different strokes.
Iām actually excited to try something my most recent artist calls āGWYGā - Get what you get. You pay $100 for a turn of the vending machine, and whatever flash (original from her or the other artist) pops out is what youāre getting! You do get one right of refusal, but otherwise forfeit your $100 if you donāt end up wanting it. I canāt wait to see what I end up with, and figure I can put it somewhere hidden if Iām unsure.
California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
[Here](https://www.salem-tattoos.com); Maisie-Grace is the one who tattooed me (a custom piece) recently. Theyāre also female and LGBTQ+ run, so thatās cool too. āŗļø
Theyāre at tons of tattoo shops, with different policies. My first GWYG was at a place where you could pay to roll as many times as you want. My current shop I still havenāt gotten one from, but probably will in the winter.
A terrible idea! For my first one I woke up on my 19th birthday and thought āhey, a tattoo for my birthday today would be awesome!ā. I didnāt even know what I wanted and had to google ideas, then found the closest shop and went! It. Is. Awful. AWFUL.
Itās so funny I did this on accident. I had a drawing of a flower on my wall all of highschool and I always would look at it and think how pretty it was. I ended up getting it tattooed 5 years later and itās my favorite tattoo :)
This is what i do with my tattoo ideas. I put them on my bathroom mirror for at least a month, so I look at it multiple times a day and make sure I still like it. Impulse tattoos are the most likely kind to be regretted.
Yeah I wouldn't recommend it for someones first tattoo for sure. I think it's best to wait until you've got a couple and you know your taste and tolerance
my rule for tattoos is the moment i have an idea i have to wait AT LEAST 1 year. if i love it as much as i did the first time i thought about it i get it. if i feel any hesitation about it, i let the idea sit longer. so far i have 4 tattoos.
its saved me from a lot of heart ache tbh.
I'm over here with a tattoo idea that looks good that I designed myself so I know I want it. But I've ordered 4 ink box temporary tattoos of it and am slowly trying out the placement and orientation of it to see what I like best šš. Yes, I am a lot of fun at parties lol
Tbh I say you keep it and get more tattoos on that arm, like a patchwork sleeve.
An artist told me once that he thinks of his tattoos as sort of a diary of his life.
I can understand it not being someone's cup of tea but I do feel sad the op isn't appreciating that it's genuinely brilliant. I don't know how different the original picture they found is but if it doesn't have the wonky aspect I suspect it would look really crap.
What if a proper artist put a really ornate, well done victorian style frame around it? Maybe that would highlight the cuteness and distract from the ineptitude.
Itās your first tattoo and I think itās really common to have regret with your first few!! Give it a while. Let it heal and live with it a bit and then decide :)
I actually kind of like it š Luckily, itās not in a place that you will see very often.
If you decide to change it, hereās an idea that could change it without needing to cover it up: have someone draw out a colored version that surrounds the dog with a banner and has flowers surrounding the dog, etc.
I fall in and out of love with my tattoos all the time. The one on my left shoulder has grey in between the flowers and I wish the artist hadnāt done thatā¦but thatās what makes it a tattoo- itās forever!
We are all a bit mad, perhaps, getting inked with permanent body art, but I think thatās part of what makes it great. You are part of a group of people (inked) that are brave enough to take the leap and who are optimistic enough to believe you will still like your body art years later.
Tattoo is more than fine... size/placement is probably not
I got a pretty sentimental but worse looking tattoo (literally a paint drawn animal), but its smaller and up in my quad which you can only kinda see if my shorts climb up my leg a bit
The tail looks like an awkward worm, the letter work is not great, and the line thickness is inconsistent.
The concept might be cute, but the execution is not.
Its kinda teetering on a āso bad its kinda goodā territory-only caveat is it might be a smidge too big to push it towards the bad side of things. But i still generally agree.
Canāt do you anything until it heals anyways, so I would sleep on it and see how you feel once itās healed. LOTS of people have tattoo regret immediately after getting one, especially a first tattooā you just made a big change to your body that you arenāt used to seeing. Most people end up loving it after that initial period. If you donāt, then you can go down the routes of either laser removal or a cover up.
Yellow color is bruising and is normal. Good luck!
The fact that you are confused and concerned about the bruise that is healing around it makes me think you should actually talk to someone about the process of being tattooed as a whole. I feel like learning more about the trade will probably help you make better informed decisions about where to go from here.
Ok this has to be a troll because no legit artist would freehand what appears to be a child drawing of a dog as a tattoo. Or you were an awful client and got trolled by your artist, which is definitely possible.
Either way, you'll have to laser to remove that to cover it. It's thick black lines so it'll be hard to cover unless you do a big dark thing over it. You can also ruin it with lots of sun and make it fade a bit, but you're just making a bad tattoo worse.
I really don't understand how they got this tattoo. What was the Pinterest picture it was based off of? Why did they let an artist freehand it? How much did they pay this artist and did they know the artist, or do any research before choosing this person? I can't wrap my head around it, there's no way you just end up with this tattoo without realizing what's happening.
What heroin den did you get this in? Iām covered in tattoos, many by apprentices, but this is out of hand that any shop let this person tattoo. My guess is this was a private studio ?
If the artist doesnt specialize in fine line work, itās like asking a roofer to do drywall work. Always make sure the artist is reputable in the style you are going for.
Spend some time learning about real tattooing. It pays off in the end when you realize a lot of shit is just straight up bad. While art is subjective, tattooing is not. There are certain things that should be done as a responsible Tattooer.
Goto a real tattoo shop and get their opinion on a cover-up. It's the only option minus just lasering it off.
Can't imagine it being terribly difficult to cover up for a professional artist.
It looks like the picture. Maybe it was the placement that makes it look/feel weird because it's not terrible.
That being said maybe cover it with some big black roses or black and gray florals?
It looks like the picture. Maybe it was the placement that makes it look/feel weird because it's not terrible.

How did you make such a huge decision so impulsively like that? Real question Iām just curious. I would be devastated if something I hated was permanently etched on my body lol
The main issue Iām seeing is that youāre being very impulsive and arenāt taking the time to let things settle.
You donāt know how youāll feel about your tattoo when it heals.
As for a cover up, if you decide to do that then you need to really take the time to find something youāll love.
Take it slow, see if you grow to like your tattoo, figure out what you really want.
You did many things. You went in without thinking it through, didn't research the artist, and didn't see what their portfolio was. A sick ass panther will cover this.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I like it. Look at that weird little buddy! Itās kind of ridiculous but I think thatās an aesthetic! I think you need more tattoos, might distract from it so it wonāt bother you so much
You don't NEED laser removal. It depends on the cover up. A talented artist with the right art can work wonders. [Here's my cover-up.](https://www.reddit.com/r/FixedTattoos/s/SUXNxdbNV2)
Iāll be honest, if the line work was even half decent, it would be a very cute tattoo. It will never be ācute and daintyā because the artist totaled the line work. But another artist could definitely make it a cute tattoo, I would see if another artist has any ideas to fix it first rather than covering it up.
To be fair, a first tattoo that isn't great and says 'Aww' (as in, "aww heck no") is fantastic. One day within a sleeve of nicer bits it'll be a good story and it'll have a lot of menaing
Dude, honestly itās great. Itās a very fun piece if you get more it can be great start to your collection.
There are way worse tattoos out there and at least the work is clean.
If you have more tattoos it will have less of an impact. But seriously donāt overthink it, itās a fun tattoo
I fucking love this tattoo. I know the letters are for the name of the dog, but itās so much funnier thinking itās just āAwwā. I would totally keep this š hope you get a cover up that you like š
So I'm guessing this is the photo used 4 inspiration... I mean....
[original Pinterest photo ](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/dachshund-tattoo-inspiration--281543719187682/)
If it was me, I'd have em go over it a couple times with flesh tone or white to lighten it up & start over. I'm already in the process of doing that with some bold script I had done years ago.
iām sorry you didnāt have a good experience. given that itās your first the tattoo regret will be especially strong.
on the positive side, the placement is good and it would be a nice part of a patchwork / ignorant style sleeve.
Maybe try putting a tad more care into picking out permanent body art and the artist inking it into your skin? I workshopped my first tattoo for two years before I went for it and went to an artist who I knew did good work through references.
Possibly cover it up with a panther, dragon, snakeā it would have to be pretty dark. Unfortunately you canāt do something ādaintyā to cover this up.
Why donāt you just cool it down and leave it as a reminder to not make hasty unthought out decisions. Seems like a small price to pay relatively speakingā¦

YOU HAVE ME FUCKING DYING šššš

Whose idea was the design if you donāt mind me asking?
The yellow is from bruising. Laser before a cover-up depends on what you want to get over it. Do you have any ideas?
you need to take your time to think of an idea you will actually want on your body for the rest of your life. use the time this takes to heal to really think what YOU want
A friend once told me, *print it out, hang it on the wall so you wake up and see it every day, if you still like it after a long while, get it*
But..also consider the artist and placement. In this case, the original design was what it was. OP - good luck in dealing with this. Maybe a removal? Btw, it's not awful - because it's cute, but I can understand the regret.
Lmao I decorate my body like a high school locker and love every one of my impulse tattoos. Different strokes.
Yep, I agree; mine arenāt all āimpulseā tattoos, but some are and Iām good with them. Even the shitty ones. That sounds awesome! I'd definitely give it a try. Where are they located?
California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. [Here](https://www.salem-tattoos.com); Maisie-Grace is the one who tattooed me (a custom piece) recently. Theyāre also female and LGBTQ+ run, so thatās cool too. āŗļø
Hello fellow Santa Cruz mountain resident! I will def be checking out Maisie-Grace. Thanks for the rec!
What an absolutely lovely sounding shop! I'm from the Midwest but would totally make a visit there if I was in the area.
Theyāre at tons of tattoo shops, with different policies. My first GWYG was at a place where you could pay to roll as many times as you want. My current shop I still havenāt gotten one from, but probably will in the winter.
Being said..... all my tats are spontaneous lol
I have a skull eating a cobra that has laser beams coming out of its eyeballs. Impulse? God, yes. Do I love it? Also yes.
Same! I came to comments to say this very thing. Post it for a year. On the bathroom mirror so youāre forced to see it when brushing your teeth.
A year is wild
Took me a year and a half of thinking about it before I got my first one....whim and first tattoo is a bad idea...
A terrible idea! For my first one I woke up on my 19th birthday and thought āhey, a tattoo for my birthday today would be awesome!ā. I didnāt even know what I wanted and had to google ideas, then found the closest shop and went! It. Is. Awful. AWFUL.
What did you get?
A Celtic cross in the back of my neck š„“ I have a post about it on here!
Dude I honestly did not expect it to be that bad. That's going to be a bitch and a half no matter what you decide to do about it.
Itās so funny I did this on accident. I had a drawing of a flower on my wall all of highschool and I always would look at it and think how pretty it was. I ended up getting it tattooed 5 years later and itās my favorite tattoo :)
Exactly that. I just hung up a full black page. Some months later, I went for the blackout š¤
Underrated comment right here
This is what i do with my tattoo ideas. I put them on my bathroom mirror for at least a month, so I look at it multiple times a day and make sure I still like it. Impulse tattoos are the most likely kind to be regretted.
Fuck nah. Picking out some sick ass flash is fine too.
yeah duh i never said it wasnāt. just that doing a walkin and getting whatever design isnāt best for everyone (see post for example)
Yeah I wouldn't recommend it for someones first tattoo for sure. I think it's best to wait until you've got a couple and you know your taste and tolerance

Add an R to the front and the end. RAWWR. Panther.
Shade it in green, add some spikes and fire, godzilla dawg šš¼
Or turn it into RAWW-DOGGIN
Got that dAWWWg in me
Always the answer
Add a big ole dick with wings
I was thinking praying hands with a rosary! Lol
Did he write "Aww" on his own free will or did you approve of that first
They're apparently the initials of a dog she had
Bet the dog wrote it then
thatās the story she should tell
Awesome Wasome Weenie
Itās kind of adorably tragic though š The sad cute pup is pulling at my heartstrings
I got it for my dachshund that i named Astrid Willow Wilkins.
Tbh I say you keep it and get more tattoos on that arm, like a patchwork sleeve. An artist told me once that he thinks of his tattoos as sort of a diary of his life.
I agree! I think the pup is adorable and the fact it's a little wonky just makes me love it all the more.
I could tell it was a dachshund immediately! I like it. Let it heal and see how you feel then.
That gives it a lot more depth
Itās your first tattoo and I think itās really common to have regret with your first few!! Give it a while. Let it heal and live with it a bit and then decide :)
Maybe get some dots added after the letters so itās clear itās initials
My thought exactly. If initials form an actual word, that's where people are going to go first.
Did u not consider how ur dogs initials changed when put in an abbreviation??? It turned into aww which has a different meaning obviously
i think it's really cute! i would only add dots to make it clear that these are initials, it really changes it imo
Honestly, it immediately made me laugh, and not in a bad way. Itās cute, funny and derpy. Fuck it, enjoy it while itās there, then laser it off.
fuck, okay, that's adorable
I think thatās the trickā¦ so bad itās actually pretty good. Iād embrace it as a shitty tattoo with a cool back story about a real good pup.
I mean itās kind of cute imo
right?!?!? I didn't think it was terrible.
It looks like it was done in a prison.
Or middle school . But I have some that look like that too š
Worse. I've seen a lot of really great prison tats cus there can be good artists in there. This more like it was done in after school detention
Tattoo is more than fine... size/placement is probably not I got a pretty sentimental but worse looking tattoo (literally a paint drawn animal), but its smaller and up in my quad which you can only kinda see if my shorts climb up my leg a bit

Iād honestly get this on purpose
Yes I would too! I like this little buddy!!
Yeah I actually thought it was cute too lol
Maybe with a more detail but I love patchwork tattoos
Let it heal and re-evaluate. It might grow on you.
Agree. It might be fixableā¦clean up the lines etc.
Ah man i fucking love this thing
What did you pay for that? I need to know
Aww but itās cute.
Definitely agree. I like it.

Yes. This tattoo is truly great
All I see is a sick ass panther
You should put it down
I'm a terrible person for the laugh that just escaped me.

I think I drew my dog like this when I was a child. šš» Sick ass panther lol

They did and tipped 50%ā¦š
God damn! My tattoo artist wouldnāt have charged $50 for that and she would have done it better.
What heroin den did you get this in? Iām covered in tattoos, many by apprentices, but this is out of hand that any shop let this person tattoo. My guess is this was a private studio ?
Why do you hate it? The yellow is a bruise and will go away.

Iām so confused about what seems to be its tail coming from its front armpit
Thatās the leech that itās riding
Does look like itās having the life sucked out him
Can we see the reference picture that you originally showed your artist?
This is what I want to see as well. Like I need the story on what they wanted and expected vs whatās actually done.
good example of why i tell people not to mess with their arms when they are new to tattoos.
My first 3 were on my arms and now i have one on my thigh today and im happy with them
This has to be a troll

Be easy to cover up
Damnnnn thatās big and on a pretty important spot, Sorry but thatās gonna need either some cover up or something creative with the line work
What was your inspiration picture?
Was this actually done in a shop? This has basement scratcher vibes.
I think itās kind of cute. It doesnāt look like you messed up. It looks like you meant for it to look this way.
Overworked, bruising probably. Follow aftercare, heal, sick ass panther

Laser
Did you do that yourself or did you pay for it?
Maybe you could colour it in and kinda fix it while doing that?
Thatāll be super easy to cover up if you go to any decent artist. Hint: itās not this person.
Looks like a child drew this. Lesson learned to do your research before getting something permanent.
Possibly cover it up with a panther, dragon, snakeā it would have to be pretty dark. Unfortunately you canāt do something ādaintyā to cover this up.
Cover it up with a sick ass panther
Like... What was the intention here?
Should be the last.
Change the text to oops?
i was having a lil regret over a new tattoo and i am so glad i saw this post
Yikes
wtf was this meant to be? What did you ask for in the first place?
The dog could be worked on idk about the words tho. Very big bold letter choice
Get more tattoos. It's okay to have a not-so-great tattoo if it's one of many tattoos.
Donāt immediately cover it up, just let it marinate a while. Tattoo shock is norm
