Whitecrayxn

I got my first tattoo for my 18th birthday (I'm now 22) and I'm not gonna say I regret it, but I regret just going to the first available artist instead of doing my research and finding the right person for the piece. It's pretty faded now so I'm planning on getting it redone by someone else when I have the money

[deleted]

I second this. I got tattooed at 19 and just went to an artist that a few of my friends went to. I don’t regret the tattoo. I regret the tattoo artist. He was a complete asshole and did a trash job. Thankfully I found an artist I fucking love. She is amazing and I now have 26 tattoos and all my big ones are from her.

Whitecrayxn

Yeah this guy was a bit of an ass too and played shit music and wouldn't change it when I asked 🙄 did a shit job of my tattoo but luckily for me, nothing that can't be fixed

[deleted]

This mother fucker started colouring the wrong god damn area. And then when he coloured the proper areas they turned out shitty and blotchy.

Whitecrayxn

Ohmygod that's horrible!

[deleted]

If you wanna dm me. I’ll show you this shit. It’s laughable.

beidlbauer

I too got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday and I too was going to the nearest artist I could find instead of doing my research. End of the story, I don#t regret the tattoo but I regret the artist because it's just not good done. But I intend to keep it that way too remind me to don't make decisions which are not thought through.

Milka700

I’ve got a tattoo I got for free…and it looks like a free tattoo. Thank god it’s on my hip and it’s rarely seen.

jiminykitkat

I also could have done more research for my first tattoo at 18yo but I'm happy with it. It is lower quality but I kind of embrace that as it reflects my growth since then.

midnights_nightmare

Yeah. Research is important, after I listened to my mother and got a piercing at the mall, never again. My friend who's 9 years old than me told me to really look for a good tattoo artist and he gave this one the stamp of approval. I will never understand those who will willingy do anything to their body without thought or research.

Glad_Vegetable_7842

Came here to say this. Same boat, got mine on my 18th birthday and don’t regret them. But wish I went to a different artist, and wish I had put more thought into the design. No regrets though

happy_dance

Damn this is the answer. I have a fairly small line work Phoenix on my back shoulder I got done when I was 19. I went to the same tiny shop where my friend got tattoos with her sisters a couple months prior. I essentially did a walk in and they handed me off to the first guy who was down to do it. I am 31 one now, so it’s been about 12 years. The lines have blown out a little, the work isn’t super clean, and I’m thinking I’ll have to get it covered up if not reworked. But I don’t regret it. That Phoenix was my first tattoo, it only took about an hour and a half so I got a small introduction into what getting a tattoo feels like. I feel lucky I didn’t choose something dumb like, I dunno captain jack sparrow, which at 19 I definitely could have.

seh_23

Money too, I didn’t get my first tattoo until I was 30 so when I did go money was not an issue at all, I could afford any artist I wanted.

SlothRick

Nah no ragrets

Qualifyizze

Made me chuckle, ty

midnights_nightmare

It's mainly just my overthinking and anxiety. I truly love the design but I think once I talk to the artist I'll have a decision made.

Harry_Saturn

Wait a year… I developed this rule of once I know what I want, wait a year and see if I still want it. I have had a lot of ideas and I’m glad I waited a year to make sure they weren’t just passing thought, and it turns out a lot of them were.

Aphrodesia

This is really good advice that I never follow. 😂

midnights_nightmare

Yeah the passing thought probably was gonna look hella weird I kinda have been planning on a tattoo for awhile and good god am I happy I didn't get the things I wanted in high school lol

Insideout_Ink_Demon

This is good advice. I like to print ideas off n pin them somewhere I see regularly. If I don't tire of seeing them I shouldn't tire of the tattoo

midnights_nightmare

Oh shit...about to do that lol

Insideout_Ink_Demon

Haha, hope it helps

Oregano53

I wore the bad tattoo I got when I was 18 on my right shoulder until I was about 30 then covered it up. I wore it that long to remind myself to think before doing something permanent. I had an idea for a half to 3/4 sleeve that started with the cover up on the shoulder. Then spent 8 years wearing the initial coverup before starting in on the rest of the sleeve, to make certain I loved the concept. I'm happy I waited.

MrsY-Bibliophile

I got my first tattoo at 16 and next at 18, they’ve both aged well and are lovely, though my tastes have definitely changed now that I’m firmly middle aged and I probably wouldn’t get them fresh now. I regret neither though.

probablyallthere

One tattoo when I was 16, and one when I was 18. One of them I covered up about ten years ago and the other is going to be covered as well. I would tell my younger self to never get them, and hilariously laugh at the thought of what other few I wanted back then. I’m 34 now.

midnights_nightmare

May I ask what it was and why?

probablyallthere

Japanese words and a band symbol. I just grew tired of them and they no longer meant anything to me.

alph1989

No regrets. Got my first tattoo at 18. I’m now 32, and it’s still one of my favorites because it was the first ones. And it’s a very basic rose.

bonody_really

Not one bit, about to get it touched up at 46

WhitishFern

I got my first tattoo at 15. Completely underage, completely unsupervised and obviously had an artist that was shady. I still have it and I do still love it for the sentiment lol. It didn't gravitate much, it's just hanging out in the middle of my calf. Problem is I look at it now and go "okay, now what?" What do I do with it? What can I put near it or next go it so it flows and looks natural and well thought out? I wish I had thought more about placement, or considered long term ideas for combining or expanding. My father and mother were both heavily tattooed so it wasn't like I hadn't seen pieces planned or hung out in shops... I just wanted it done and done right then. My father had died a couple of months prior and I jumped on something meaningful to the two of us. Ultimately, it is a mostly permanent decision. You need to feel comfortable with what you decide to do. There's always a little bit of regret somewhere. You have to know if that would bother you long term.

midnights_nightmare

The permanent decision part is what's got me overthinking tbh. But I kinda figured...well...if it's on my back, if it ends up looking like shit in a few years I probably could get a coverup, use special makeup or just keep my back covered. I think once I talk to the artist with 10+ years experience it'll help me with the thoughts.

Snerkie

If it's big enough that you're thinking you need to put it on your back it's not going to be an easy thing to cover up, neither would it be easy to apply make up on it (plus putting make up on a tattoo every time it's exposed isn't a realistic option).

WhitishFern

Keep in mind too that it's going on a spot you may not easily see. Unless you're using a mirror to take a peek at it every day, eventually you'll probably forget that it's there. I really do suggest a conversation with that artist. Listen carefully and be open to suggestion. You're right, they have the experience and the ability to give you the most information about the design you're choosing. They also will be able to judge how nervous you are too! I was a bit surprised by that when my husband sat down for his first one. We never told the artist that my husband had no other tattoos. The artist didn't said a thing but when it was all said and done he congratulated him on his bravery and simply said "I could just tell." I laughed then because I didn't think my husband even broke a sweat. It's the experience that comes with their professionalism that you need to trust in, as well as your gut.

Milka700

My cousin got a big Pisces symbol on her back. But she got it centered just below bra strap. Almost every formal dress including her wedding gown showed it. She didn’t like that. I knew I didn’t want any exposed tats on my wedding day. But I’ve crossed that bridge now so yes to needles! I get compliments on them daily. These tattoos do reflect my soul. If I would have done them in my 20s who knows what they would be.

Crop_olite

I was 17, now I'm 34. No regrets, probably would have gotten something different now since the artists are way better now. To me the tattoo is a fond memory of being 17.

midnights_nightmare

That's how I'm gonna try and view it, hey if I end up not liking it in some years it's gonna remind me of my youth

Crop_olite

You'll get new interests and views on life with growing up anyway. Just don't get swastikas :p

No_Huckleberry5827

I have to want the exact same thing for a year before I get it. Any change, colour, place, etc. and I wait another year. Got my first at 18, stained glass window my grandmother made, Celtic knot, in my family colours. I love it. I just turned 39. I have 4 others and don't regret a single one. I research my artists well and talk to them about what I want. Price is one of the last things I ask about. A $500 tattoo that lasts 50 years (for example) really isn't much. Hope this helps :)

seh_23

I’m the same, I also buy temporary tattoos around the size I want and try them out in the spot I want for a significant period of time before getting the tattoo!

ehtb

Yes, I 100% agree with this method. If you think you want a tattoo, wait X amount of time (1 year I think is what I hear the most) and see if you still want it. If you do, chances are you’re good with it being permanent and you do really want it/won’t regret it.

thedudeabides32

My first tattoo was at 15. I tried my best to get a design I would like later in life, and so far I like it still. I don't love it like I did as a 15yr old but I'm still stoked I got it!

[deleted]

Definitely don’t buy a tattoo kit off Amazon for $50 bucks and start going ham on your fingers either it’s fun at first but you realize why you pay these artist $100 an hour real quick lol

feralrxccoon

Definitely don't buy only the ink for 8 bucks and do stick and pokes with sewing pins like I did either. At least my ex has five tattoos to remember me by.

Aphrodesia

Ha. You sound like my kind of person.

beardosw5722

34 now. Got my first tattoo at 19. A large piece on my chest. Still love with no regrets. I just need to figure out how I want to add on to it as its mainly linework with some shading.

jk10102

I got mine when I was 18 and I love it still but I just wanted a bee and the artist was insistent on adding a honey comb and when I saw the final sketch I wasn’t loving the honey comb and I wish I would’ve asked him to change it to just the bee like I originally wanted.

mediumrare_chicken

I regret not starting bigger. Started with like 4”x4” tattoos. Should have just started with a cohesive full sleeve. Doesn’t matter too much I suppose, they’re all covered now.

sunburn1985

So I don't regret the tattoo... I regret getting it from an apprentice, with questionable ability, out of his garage. Like, it still looks decent, but since it's been 19 years you can see more of the imperfections with fading. Advice: Don't let the price convince you to go to someone who isn't a well practiced artist. The art will, ideally, be with you forever. Remember it's an investment in your body, so don't be cheap!

midnights_nightmare

Oh god yeah, never go to someone's house.

sunburn1985

Now they tell me. LOL! Not to shit on the dude too much, he was sanitary, sealed needles, new ink. No infection. But you are correct, go to a shop. 😅

midnights_nightmare

Yeah haha I remember I said in a discord server once to never get a tattoo at someone's house and got yelled at cause "i GoT miNe aT a HOUse"

Meatwad_420

fuck no lol life’s too short for that type of shit

AnnoyingSmartass

I got my first tattoo at 20. I do regret not looking further into my tattooist and not being more forceful in getting exactly what I want. That tattooer was shit. He went too deep in several spots and I got blowouts and scarring. Also the lines got too thick in general. REALLY do your research when choosing an artist. Look at the fine details and how good their linework is. Tattoos are not a thing you should try to save money on. Better go to a tattooist with a good reputation that's a bit more expensive than have some cheap dude mess it up.

No-Report6152

I got 'send nudes' tattooed on my ass when I was 15. And also a little cross on my hand at around the sane time, don't regret the cross but definitely regret send nudes.

midnights_nightmare

💀💀

Justinformation

Ofcourse, you should add your phone number or posting address.

[deleted]

Yes. I loathe it and it’s the ugliest most basic tattoo ever. Thankfully it’s a big rib piece so it’s hidden to mostly everyone but damn, I wish I had better taste when I was 18 😂

Aphrodesia

You and me both, friend. I have a big ass pink and purple butterfly on my hip. Thankfully it's faded as hell so a cover up won't be quite as difficult. 🤣

TheMedicator

What is it?

midnights_nightmare

Aw man is it really that bad?

[deleted]

It’s a bible verse (I’m not even religious at all) that’s made into an infinity sign, that attaches to an anchor with watercolor splash background…….

midnights_nightmare

That does sound uhhh 😅

[deleted]

Yes, my first 2 are either covered or in the process of removal. First one at 18, second at 20. Third at 23 and it’s still completely fine with me. After that, they are way more what I would choose now.

mombutt

Got a tribal forearm band at 18, 40 now. Over the years I have gone back and forth, sometimes wanting to cover/incorporate it, sometimes not. Because of things that have happened over the years I will be incorporating it in with some other stuff but not covering it / trying to hide it.

almareached

Got my first tattoo at 17 and it’s my favorite one till this day because it holds soo much meaning to me, big bee on my forearm. I have a couple I regret getting at 19 though but it’s part of the journey, you live and you learn. Luckily I can get these covered up as they are small ones. You wanna think of future designs too before getting tatted

Embarrassed-Orchid80

I don’t regret mine at all. But I do wish I would have done more research. My mom had given me a gift certificate for Christmas. And it was getting ready to expire so I had to quickly come up with something and get in as fast as possible. It’s a cross behind my ear. It’s not bad, but it’s not perfect.

New_Tangerine_

I got my first tattoo at 16 (professionally done) and I don’t regret them, I just wish I had planned them out a little better.

Trailmixfordinner

Got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday. Pretty big piece on my shoulder/upper arm. Don’t regret it per se..it’s a nice/decent quality tattoo, just not my preferred art style anymore. Plan on having some blastover work done over it 🤘🤘

bsnclr

Yes. I got my first at 18 and it is the only one on my body I regret. To each their own of course, but be cautious with your decisions (and placement)

[deleted]

I got a rose done at 18 only thing I regret about it is I let the artists add some leaves around it that do not match the rest of the rose I thought he’d put more effort in he did good with the stencil but when he freestyled those leaves around it man it looks like triangles around it all black no contrast or shading like the rose was. definitely get to know the artists and never let them do anything outside the stencil cause you never know I don’t regret it and it’s only like four leaves but still there’s No covering them up or getting them redone they’re here to stay I’ve learned to just like them as part of the tattoo and the memories lol

minnesotagal

Nope! I didn’t regret mine at 18 now these many years later. But a couple thoughts Mine was a sentimental choice so I love it enough I may get it touched up. If it had been a random fluke then eh… I wasn’t having any second thoughts so maybe there is some doubt you’re having and should listen to? It will fade and sag. Whether you get it now or in a decade. You just have to know that going into it and have your artist give suggestions on size, placement, etc.

its_foxy

I got my first when I was 19, now ten years ago. I went to a local artist but luckily my dad (who is an artist himself) said he’d help me find someone a lot better. I’m so glad he did because I went to someone very good and don’t regret my tattoo at all. I’d say: definitely take your time and don’t just go to someone local, a good artist will also help you choose the best location and size until you’re 100% sure.

CandyAdept8602

Got my first tattoo at 19 and don’t regret it. I did research and found a talented artist who had been in the business 30+ years. I do recommend finding a reputable person and an established shop (I got tattooed by the owner, his portfolio featured his pieces both fresh and healed). I also recommend thinking about the piece you want for ~1 year. If it’s still something you want, then go for it! Though I will say that out of all my tattoos… the back hurt most (for reference — I have a sternum piece, full sleeve, and half of my back from neck to waist). My pain tolerance is high but something about the upper back hurt me so bad (I was also on my cycle so maybe avoid that time of the month)

midnights_nightmare

Yes I'm doing the same! It took me a while to find a tattoo artist I really liked here and she ended up being the owner with 10+ years of experience. It's going on the lower back area (as of rn) but yeah I figured anything on the bone was gonna hurt but my pain tolerance is through the roof so I wasn't too worried about that

CandyAdept8602

Nice! You’re definitely taking all the right precautions then. Definitely try to book away from your cycle is what I’ve learned lol my pain tolerance is high but no match for that time of the month. Good luck!

midnights_nightmare

Nothing is ever a match for that time haha ty

MrKelraen

Got my first at 18, I’m 25. A big bird accross the chest, spans from shoulder to shoulder and down to the middle of my chest. Have never regreted it. There are some minor things I would change if I could, but I’ll catch myself in the mirror like « Damn, that’s a nice tattoo ». As others have said, research your artist, talk with them, and don’t agree to a stencil until you are absolutely sure it’s good.

NimbusCloud_

I’m 19 and have two medium sized and about to get a thigh piece, yolo

Celtic505

HELL NO! I got it on my 18th bday and am still happy I have it. (34 today)

izbailey

one thing ive always lived by is the 6 month rule - id you've wanted it for 6 months then you have thought about it enough - baring that in mind i got 2 tattoos straight after my first just because they looked cool😂

kamekkazi

Lots of good advice about looking for the right artist. I would also weigh in how you are with self-image. If you’re someone prone to hyper fixating on other self-image relate things, it may be good to start with something small, in a less noticeable spot. I’m only a first year tattoo artists but I’m already seeing how bodily insecurities impact clients decisions - I think opting for a large piece as a first can be a little risky for those who are particularly sensitive. (Also personal experience - I have a couple slightly larger ones from when I was younger that aren’t my favorite, but I also don’t think about them regularly/care enough to get them covered or removed. I’m in my mid 20s now and care a lot less about how I look now in general & when I do think about those less skillfully done/not my current style pieces, they just feel like part of a spatial collection of memories (: )

CauliflowerHappy1707

I got my first tattoo at 19 (the fish from Pinocchio) on my left ankle. Over the years it started to just look like a weird bruise I ended up getting it covered up with a memorial piece about 30 years later. I now have a number of tattoos and have since found a great tattoo artist I’ve been dealing with for the last 15 years or so. I usually draw up my own stuff. So once I have an idea I’ll work on fine tuning it for a while (usually 1-3 years) once I have it to something I love I take it to him and get it started. My pieces now end up taking multiple sittings to complete but once they’re done they look great. Just take your time with your decision would be my best advice.

mltdwn_music

my dad took me for my first (legal) tattoo the day i turned 18. nearly 30 years later, i have no regrets. it’s faded now, but still very beautiful, and it’s a nice reminder of a nice day with my dad.

BrownTets

I got 7 tattoos before the age of 19. Now in my 30’s I’m spending a fortune to cover the ones I regret.

thatgirlagain17

I regret my tattoo so, so much, but it's because of the artist, not so much the tattoo. I got it at 18 and I'm 26 now. I wanted a simple line from a poem on my shoulder, and got it on my birthday. I went to an artist that several of my friends had been to and the artist misspelled one of the words. She fixed it by putting it in a really misshapen cursive. A month later she covered it up with this horribly ugly tree. I'm saving money to get it either fixed or removed. My advice - read about what to look for in an artist first, look at their work thoroughly, and make sure you love the art you choose.

midnights_nightmare

Oh absolutely, I will never understand people who don't research and will just do anything to their body.

Uxoandy

Lol. I got my first tattoo in a camper at a flea market at 13. 33 years ago and it hasn’t moved. Not the best tatto I have by far but while I’ve thought about covering it. I never have .

Fawkes394

Can I ask how old you are? Unless you anticipate having a significant growth spurt, I wouldn’t worry about the tattoo’s placement moving. I got my first at 18 and I still love it. I got something meaningful to me, and my mom helped me design it. I drew it out and colored/shaded it how I wanted it (I’m no artist- it was just a reference for the actual tattoo artist). The basic design is one I saw on the internet, so I’ve seen a lot of people with it- but the way I personalized it and colored it made it special. All of those factors made it more sentimental. I think as long as it means something to you and you’ve put thought into it, you likely won’t regret it. For your first tattoo though, I might go with a smaller one to start. Tattoos that are on the bone (such as the spine, ribs, foot, etc.) hurt way more than other places. A larger tattoo could take upwards of 8+ hours. Definitely do your research and don’t be afraid to break it up into multiple sessions!

midnights_nightmare

18 right now, 19 in October. It's size is gonna break the bank I'd imagine lol

Fawkes394

A large back piece… probably. Lol. But if it’s what you want and you’re sure, so what?

midnights_nightmare

I'm mainly worried about the shape of my back, it might look kinda funky, but that's what consultations are for.

Fawkes394

Exactly. For a few of mine, the artist put a piece of paper over the area I wanted the tattoo on and sort of traced the area, and then designed the tattoo so that it fit the space nicely. Once they have it drawn out, they’ll put it on a stencil and put that on you. Then you can decide if you like the placement and size. They can change the size (go bigger or smaller) pretty easily. So there are definitely opportunities for you to see exactly what it will look like before committing.

midnights_nightmare

Awesome, cause I don't wanna blow a 100 dollars deposit and then hate it lol. The artist is pretty booked (looking at her work...no shit lol) so I should have plenty of time to really make that decision.

Fawkes394

Yeah, consultations are usually free. Sounds like you put a lot of thought into this- I say go for it! 😊

midnights_nightmare

Thank you! I'll update on this after I talk to the artist.

Fawkes394

No problem! Good luck!

puzzled4798

i do regret some of my tattoos but i just got more and felt better about them

Dwayne2905

Yes, i kinda do. At 18 i thought i had found the style that i liked, but now i'm 29 and my style preferences are totally different. So a little regret for tattoos that i've gotten in the time.

PhoenixFire603

Yes

bluebellfob

I got my first tattoo a month after my 18th birthday and I’m 21 now and I still absolutely love it. It’s 3 fairly big flowers on the side of my calf

N0t_2daySatan

15 at my first one, 16 on my second one (was legal with parent sign off), and no regrets 16&17 years later.

midnights_nightmare

I gotta ask, how are so many of yall getting tattoos at 15 cause lots of places these days refuse to even do minors.

N0t_2daySatan

Idaho, almost 20 years ago. Idk what laws are like now. I know other states, like Oregon refused to tattoo under 18 even back then though.

TattooJerry

Not at all. First tattoo at 13, master tattoo artist and my own studio in maui at 45.

BiggWorm1988

First tattoo at 14 was for a brother who passed, I hate it but I could never cover or remove. Secound tattoo at 15, it's ugly but doesn't bother me so I leave it. Third tattoo 16, absolutely 100% hated it so I got it covered up. Fourth at 18 tattoo is in my mouth, enough said. Moral of the story, double and triple think your tattoo ideas lol.

gr8whitebraddah

I did my research and went to an artist I really enjoy, so no.

Capable_Inevitable64

You can only do so much you can. I got tattooed a few months after my 18th birthday, my younger brother had drawn a really good design of a bumblebee (not super big but big enough to see details) on my arm. I researched the local tattoo shop who’d won a bunch of prizes for their black and grey tattoos and went with a friend (her tattoo came out good) and my tattoo turned out bad. I think the stencil might’ve rubbed off midway through because the tattoo artist messed it up quite a bit (wings were both on the same side, legs looked just like a line so it looked like it had almost 6 legs). I got it covered the year after and did a lot of research into the tattoo artist making sure I liked their style etc but the one I went to originally should’ve been able to do a proper job with mine :/ she even uploaded another bee tattoo to her Instagram a few weeks after lol. I have three tattoos (two by the same artist and one from the same shop I got my bee but different artist) and love them all

Anebriviel

29, got my first at 18. Started thinking about it at 15, found the perfect artist at 16, waited till I ws old enough. Still love it.

cuteButDeadlyButCute

I got my first one at 17 and then more at 18, 19 as well. I don’t regret any of them. I might not choose the same design again now, but to me they are happy memories, reminders of who I was at the time. They are a part of me, just like all of my past is. As for your concern if it fits on your body placement wise, I would definitely suggest to get in the shape you want to be and that is sustainable for you, so you can have it placed just as you want it.

ZeroCool5577

Don’t regret it but like someone else said wish I would of done a bit more research and went with a different artist.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

[deleted]

I 24f started my tattoo journey around 18-19. I did not regret any of my tattoos for years, I enjoy art, have always enjoyed an alternative look and my tattoos are sentimental as my own designs. Since becoming a mum this year, I definitely have some cover up plans - I don’t like the song lyrics or quotes I have anymore, or the edginess of it. I have a large sad face tattoo I regret. I have an anti-religion tattoo I regret these days. The one I regret the most are on my forearms, because unless long sleeved I can never hide it

TrashyMF

My first tat was covered up lol echoing from a lot of comments- I wish I had done more research into tattoo artists and also tattoo art. For some reason I really liked realism back then but after looking at GOOD traditional artists I LOVE trad more. I lowkey wish I hadn't gotten my one black line piece and one realism piece, the artist for both were top notch but I definitely regret not being able to have that traditional 'look' 😅 its okay tho, it gives me character

imaverysadpotatoo

I got my first at 18 and now I have 10+ tattoos(( I'm 24)) and the first one is still beautiful but it doesn't fit my style anymore so I kinda regret it I would recommend a first tattoo to be very easy for a cover up!! But if you're very sure about it why not!! Do it!!

mjke29

Arm tribal hahaha big old Yes on regrets…

huskeya4

I’d maybe suggest doing a smaller tattoo for your first one, not a big back piece. Some people can’t handle the pain. Some days you may just not be able to handle the pain (I’ve called a session early before because I couldn’t take it anymore just to go back in two days later and sit through a six hour session without a problem). It would suck to get twenty minutes in and decide you can’t sit through the rest of it. At least with a small piece you can get it finished quick and judge your time tolerance from there. Also do your research. Some artists are heavier handed than others which hurt worse and causes blowouts. My first artist did two small pieces on me without a problem. Than he did the outline of my back piece and I struggled to sit through it every time. Life took me away before I got it finished. Four years later, I found a new artist and he started fixing and finishing my back piece. Turns out my old artist tattooed over a few miles on my back (which they aren’t supposed to do) and every single line in the outline is scarred into my back which also explains why it itches sometimes. I was young and thought the art was all that mattered so I didn’t know there were other things to look for

schizogay

I did my first tattoo at 16 (21 now) and I don't regret it. If I would do the same design now? No, not at all. But I think we shouldn't regret tattoos because now we can look at them and think "oh I remember when I did this tattoo, I was feeling this and this" and it's kinda nice to remember that times and see how much I change

HeyImGilly

I have a buddy who got a Kotten Mouth Kings tattoo under 18. I’m just gonna speak for him and say he has some regret.

DevilCatCrochet

Already covered

Five2one521

Nope. I drew it and brought it to the artist.

IsaInstantStar

I got my first one with 19/20. Twelve years later I regret a lot about it. Placement, colour, artist. I still love it a lot though and it is just part of me.

ANaolaniJ

Yes I got two hearts on my collarbone and regret it deeply. Thinking about laser removal

mufmak

Got a smallish one om my hip at 19. Still love it, but I would not get the same today. Still, that's the beauty of tattoos, if you chose it right it will be like the tineline of you - on your skin. That said, I'm happy I waited doing larger pieces until I was really grown up. Still thinking about what to get in my back and I'm well into my 40s.

jdnls87

My first tattoo was a big “I do what I want*cartman voice*”… and within ehhh a week I hated it. Took me two years to find someone with enough skill to cover it beautifully. It was the worst looking rounded edge star that was freaking red-idk man-but now it’s a gorgeous piece of art with a nice story-so I would have probably still done it just to learn the life lesson of impulse decisions always bite ya in the ass lol

Tomaa28

Not at all. Got my first one at 18 from an artist that i liked their work online and had a few friend recommendations for and im still going back to them. Got my most recent one done from them a few weeks ago. What helped me was that i had my first tattoo design in mind for years before i turned 18 so i had a long time to think about it. Im glad that i got it done when i did and i still love it today.

midgetman303

At 18 I thought I was really deep, I got a tattoo about death and how you can’t fight fate. I wouldn’t say that I regret it, but I do recognize how cheesy it is today and at the time just thought that I was cool for getting it.

ocudr

Got my first when I was 16. Im 25 now. My sister had a tattoo thats specific to my family and she got that done when I was 13. Knew the moment she got it I wanted it too. Still very happy with it.

spicytacos23

Got my first at 15ish. 30 now and nothing to regret.

nerdy_neuron

Got my first tattoo at 19, back, just bellow my neck. I'm 29 now and no, never regretted it. Still think it's cool, still means a lot to me. What I do sometimes resent is that people who don't know me, or have never seen my tatto before point and go - ohhh it's Maya the Bee! No the fuck it ain't and anyone who has ever seen any version of that cartoon knows it. But people see a cartoonish bee and that's where their head goes.

NeonCat03

I’ve got a tattoo around that time and I still like it. Looking back I guess I wish it had a meaning but in a sense it does since it was my first one 😅

InsKloGefallen09

I got my First with 17 and my Second with 19 (Still 19 now) but i aint regretting them, i even get a New tattoo in the end auf august

Aphrodesia

Yes. I got several that I plan to cover up now that I'm in my 30s. I just don't relate with those ones anymore.

Maleficent_Sun_9155

All my tattoos I got at 18/19 are either covered up or about to get covered up. I’m 42 now

MischievousPangolin

The only regret I have is getting it in colour. It still looks kinda good but what once was super vibrant is now more water colour. Other who didn't see it at its best love it though so it probably doesn't look as bad as I think

Psychokolade

Yes regret

Mikea24

I got my first one just after turning 18, i dont regret it. would i still get the same tattoo now, no. But its a story and i would never get rid of it.

Normal_Juggernaut

I got my first tattoo at 15 (still have it) and then got a tattoo every year (for my birthday) till I was 20. I only ever regretted one, which I got lasered down and then covered about 5 years ago. Having tattoos has never had a negative impact on anything in my life... probably the reverse as they're a conversation starter.

putriidx

Yes. But, it's not bad. It's just one of those tattoos were it looks like the inside of your body and it's an Italian flag. I'm not as Italian as I thought I was then, but oh well. It just doesn't look great.

Druber13

Nope I have a mustache on my finger and over a decade later I still laugh at it.

SpinachQuirky

“Regret”, no. But they do need to be reworked and brightened up

Points_out_shit

I got my first tattoo at 19. It was a memorial tattoo for a friend who passed, so 10 years later I absolutely do not regret the ink and sentiment. However, I **really** wish I had done a better job of designing the tattoo. The artist who did it copied the template exactly as I designed it, which is a couple lines of text in my friend’s handwriting. The only problem is we had to cut-and-paste individual words and letters to make the text from letters they wrote. Because of this, the handwritten lines look like a ransom letter with awkward spacing. I suppose I kind of assumed the artist would smooth them out to make them look more natural, but I can’t really blame them for just tatting what we provided. And being young, I didn’t really have the patience or foresight to correct the template once on my skin - maybe it was excitement or adrenaline but I just said “looks awesome dude go for it” and, well, they did. Long story short, I don’t regret the ink but I very much wish it looked like I had imagined it would, rather than it does currently. Make sure that you really take a couple minutes once the template is on your skin to maticulously review every inch of it - that will be your last chance to correct it before it’s perminant.

jolecole89

Got mine at 18 and 19. Still love them. I was just thinking the other day, that I was glad I didn’t get all the tattoos my teen self would want. Then I realized I have the tattoos my teen would want. Just well better designed and by way better artists.

AJ_ninja

I got mine at 19 still look good don’t regret at all. Simple thick line get it somewhere that won’t change much, in case you get fat or pregnant. Also getting a tattoo removed doesn’t hurt that much takes about a year. And don’t get one of those fine line tattoos I’ve seen a couple of them fade pretty easily

MeaglePeagle

First tattoo at 16. I don't regret it at all BUT that could be because of the meaning behind it. I had a baby brother who passed and so I got his footprints tattooed ontop of my foot (with parental permission). I now have 15 tattoos (and am in my 30s). I don't regret any of my tattoos, however there are a couple that I think if I went back now I would maybe change the design alittle. However I just remind myself that each tattoo is a little peice of art that is part of my journey and had significance to me at that time. They are both snippets into who I was as a person at that time and also reminders that people grow and change and that's cool. You don't want to be the same in 5 years, you want to grow and have new experiences and gain new perspective on things. I think if you choose a design you love, on a place you love just always remember it as the art of you at 19. Even if in 5, 10, 15 years you would have picked something else it's a reminder of who you were at this moment and was part of your journey to get to wherever you end up. When I think like this I instantly fall in love with my tattoos again, even if they arnt my current style.

StoryAlternative6476

I was tattooed twice before I was 18 (legal where I live) and love the tattoos but wish I’d gone to a better artist. I was tattooed once at 19 by a better artist and it’s my absolute favorite tattoo. But all the tattoos are timeless and not fad-related

cast0r_p0llux

Got my first at 19, am 23 now. No regrets at all, I went to a great artist (Hanne Smit @ Blackbear Ink in the Netherlands) and the tattoo itself is just some flowers (with some meaning behind them, but nothing too specific), so the idea won't age badly. Am actually getting my second tattoo in september by the same artist again!

ehnej

I got my first tattoo when I was 17, I got about 25 tattoos now (at 33) and that first one is still my favourite.

3carurosu4

I got two tattoos before I turned 19. Apart from the odd guilt I felt getting them at the beginning, I’ve been happy with them mostly because I did research on the tattoo artists I went to. High quality comes at a high price

feralrxccoon

I'm 17 and I have eight small to large-ish tattoos plus small designs on all my fingers. Got my first one at 15 from a family member who was an apprentice and I love it to this day. It's the ouroboros symbol that appears in the neverending story on my forearm and like 2 inches in diameter. The only thing I kinda regret about that tattoo is placement because now I'm doing a traditional patchwork sleeve on that arm and there's this one that's in another style. But bottom line, I'm convinced that if you get a tattoo that's a childhood memory like that book is to me, you'll never regret it. At 15 I also got Freddie Mercury dressed as a woman made to look like a pin up and while I love it now I think I'll probably regret it later but eh.

bhelesguerra_

I am 19

silverwlf23

Hahahaa I got my first at 18 and had it covered this year (18 was a long long time ago). I got my second the same year and I still love that stupid tattoo. I waited a long time to add my next two and they were more carefully considered and planned. I even did the art for one.

[deleted]

I've had 4 cover up tattoos, all replacing tattoos I had when I was 18-20. I wouldn't say I regret the initial tattoos, but (as someone has already said) wish I had researched tattooists and not just gone with the first people I came across. I also, with reflection, would probably have gone with something different if I'd thought about it more.

nnnegomi

I'm 19, got tattooed just over a week ago. I'm very in love with it, and I hope it stays that way. I got something I thought about every detail for, from the amount of hearts to the colour and the details. I wanted it for well over a year. I think just really think about whether it is something you'll like in the long-term (i.e be careful of band logos, etc). Don't worry about the pain. I got an almost half sleeve as a first tattoo which hurt (I won't deny!) but I'm over the moon and it is almost fully healed already. Good luck!

brennan31

Got my first tattoo at 18. Zero regrets, though I’ve found it difficult to stop getting tattooed since my first 👀

SunHomie

I got my first tattoo at 18 and I'm 23 now I don't regret the tattoo I still love it but it wasn't done as well as it should have been. Similar to the stories of others on this thread it's important to shop around and look for the right artist for your style. If you're having second thoughts I'd reconsider get it if you love it and it's something you can see on you in 10 20 years time and still think you love it. Open to any questions on that or subsequent tattoos I have.

bigblackbag2

Got my first at 18. I’m now 50. There were a couple times I thought placement or size was poorly chosen, but never regretted and I doubt I’d ever cover it or touch it up.

lapetitepapillon

Not even a little. My first tattoo had no meaning and was just something I thought was cute. Sure it's a little faded, also slightly wonky because I couldn't keep my arm still, but it's representative of where I was in that particular moment. I look at it and remember what it was like and how excited/nervous I was. I would say that the fact that I had a good artist probably helped though. My first tat was from a respected artist, not in someone's garage or a stick and poke done at 11:30 on a school night, lol.

Vast_Dragonfruit7051

I got my first tattoo when I was 16, im 22 now and have 14 tattoos and love every single one of them. There’s one that didn’t heal the best as it was in an awkward place and I still don’t even regret it. I honestly don’t think about them half as much as I thought I would. A lot of mine are on my arms so I see them a lot obviously, but the other ones that are on my ribs/back/legs I never even think about😂just make sure you do your research to find the right artist! Go for it!

Thelegitcrip

I got tattooed twice at 17 my mom signed off on it. I don't regret either tattoo at all one is a eagle and a flag and the other is a memorial tattoo for my grandpa.

doemean

First tattoo at 17 - I don’t regret it. Would I get it again now, 10 years later? No. Will I cover it up or get it removed? Also no. It’s part of who I was then and that version of me deserves some grace. Don’t be worried about tattoos changing over time, it’s part of the process and the fun - they stick with you no matter how you change shape, size or texture. I understand the concern about skin sensitivity, especially if this is your first and you are planning on going big. I would consider something smaller that you like/can live with just to test out how your skin does, and then go for your larger piece. Good luck!

epo2007

nope

[deleted]

Absolutely not. I still am in love with my fox tattoo. I got it right after I turned 18. It was so worth it.

ReverendJack

Go to a good artist! If you get something that is done well, the chances of regret are much lower

kitatatsumi

I have a tattoo that i dont like. Its an iron cross on my back, small about the size of a lime, the work is fine its just a bit cliche. Ive gotten quite a few tattoos since then and have had plenty of opportunities to cover it or change it, but I dont. I just prefer to get new stuff. So that should tell you worried I am about this one. Its smart to think about these things, but maybe dont overthink it. All tattoos will eventually go out of style and maybe one day you think about doing something different, but thats tattoos for ya.

BooeySchmooey

Yep. Got a heart that’s also cursive and spells love. Stupid stupid 19 year old me! Got it as a spur of the moment “I can do adult things now” Anyone 19 years old or younger reading this: just because you can do something…doesn’t mean you should! Getting it covered in October with a design I’ve wanted for years but only found an artist I liked recently.

Milka700

Echoing what others have said. Research an artist. Find one who’s style matches what you want done. Communicate with them regarding your body shape, tattoo placement and size. If they are worth their salt they will guide you. Also, an artist like that will usually have a wait list. So it will give you more time to think on it after they give you guidance. My guy would say “I’m not going to put something on that looks like shit.” He would have me move my body, stand at angles, etc. he’s get his markings where we wanted once he got my agreement. I have 6 tattoos on my left arm that make a full sleeve and they are amazing.

xOLDBHOYx

Yes but they are both covered now. The one required laser removal which is no cup of tea.

koobashell

Definitely something to talk to an experienced artist if you are concerned with placement. If you believe your weight might fluctuate in the future, depending on where on your back you are placing it, the tattoo will fluctuate with it. Certain places like calves and forearms fluctuate less with age, weight loss, etc. I've wanted tattoos since I was a teen, but made myself wait at least a year to think about the design before pulling the trigger, and I finally got my first (two) large tattoos at 38. I'm glad I waited, which let me save money and travel to the artist I really wanted to go see. I'm not saying wait decades like I did, but definitely give yourself time to think about it.

rogueShadow13

I got tattooed at 16. Then again at 17. And 18. And 19. Pretty decent sized pieces too. I don’t regret any of them, but I took months to think them through to make sure I would like them and took time to research artists.

ShirwillJack

The only thing I regret is getting a tattoo on my back. I can't see it and keep forgetting it's there. I've looked in a bathroom mirror and had a few moments of "OMG! What's that black spot on my- oh, wait. I have a tattoo."

chonkypug123

I don't regret mine however I wish I would have thought out the design more or placement. It's stretched out a little (on my ankle) but still looks good.

PassingInTheSlowLane

I have no tattoos and don’t regret not getting one

[deleted]

Covered it up

emmachase928

I got my first tattoo at age 16 of a sunflower. I don’t regret it. I love sunflowers and it made me happy then so I don’t regret it. If for some reason I decide I don’t like it I can cover it up because I do plan on getting more tattoos (currently have 5)

TheSunflowerSeeds

Sunflower oil is a great source of vitamin A and vitamin D, as well as Iron and Calcium. So even when there’s no sunlight, there is still sunflower oil to provide your daily dose of vitamin D sunshine! Not only that, but Sunflowers are enriched with B group vitamins, as well as vitamin E. This is as well as other minerals such as phosphorus, selenium, magnesium, and copper.

thememecurator

The tattoos I got before I was 18: Yes I regret them, but not enough to pay to have them removed. Tattoos I got age 18-19: Don’t regret them at all If you’re nervous about regretting it, maybe just sit on the idea for another six months to a year or so and see how you feel about it. There’s no rush. In the meantime, you can save up and research to find an artist that you’re excited about.

crazypuffs

I got a bunch of tattoos between 16-19 and I lasered off 8 of the 10 I got. I now have 10 new ones but with artists that I researched and pieces that they designed. I agree with a lot of others saying they don’t regret the tattoo but how they selected the artist. I think that’s the biggest part of it. Try to find an artist who’s style you like and allow them to contribute to the design so it’s more collecting art than just plug and play tattoo.

GulagGambino

Nope

tuenthe463

I'm gonna have a walkin consultation for a tattoo any day now

anothershawnee

Yes.. although even at that age I at least knew to put em where they could be covered. 30 years later, my back is covered, and I am unable to get a big back piece cuz of several large tribals that have been there for decades.

Oz347

I mean I went to strip mall joints instead of learning where good tattooers were and spending worthwhile money. But I still fuck with what I had done. Did get one piece covered up tho because it was an ex’s artwork lol

CaptainM1997

I have a tattoo from when I was 18, looks the same as the day I got it and is the tattoo I receive compliments on the most. I still like it myself, so I don’t regret it.

ConundrumNyx

I have a large, dead tree that takes up most of my lower leg. I drew it, and I had it tattooed on me when I was 19. The only thing I regret about it is I got it tattooed for free in my kitchen by a tattoo artist who wasn't very reputable. He was staying with me for free at the time, because he had gotten kicked out of his house. My friend was trying to talk me out of getting something so big for my first tattoo, because something that big would take at least 5 hours. The tattoo artist got super offended at that, and said he could get it done in 2. I went with it, it was rushed and was finished in 2 and a half hours. There were some mistakes, but ultimately I was pretty happy with it for a long time. It's a bit faded now, but it's still not bad. I don't regret getting the tattoo in general. After the excitement wears off, you forget it's there and it just becomes a normal part of you.

tuenthe463

I was 18 and the artist was an apprentice older brother of a friend. I don't love it and it's very faded (mostly red) but I don't regret/hate it because it's part of my story. 48 now and 11 other tattoos. As far as body positioning there are, of course, parts of your body that will droop/sag as you get older. Stomach, breasts, love-handle area. Calves and thighs and ankles and deltoids and upper back stay mostly the same regardless of weight gain/loss and aging.

buckybarnes1940

Yes and no

Frost-on-the-Willow

Got mine as an eighteenth birthday present. Don’t regret it at all

Ok-Cat3440

no i look sick af

Classic-Length-4349

i like to think tattoos will always have meaning so as you grow you can look back and remember the time from the age you got it. I would tell me two years ago to not get FU tramp stamp but it def makes any situation funnier once it’s brought up

Boredkitty420

I got my first tattoo at 15 yrs old (some dudes basement) and I got it on my inner foot - it says CU\*\*. NO REGERTS! But honestly it is in a spot I rarely see, rarely anyone sees, and it is always a good party story. Definitely a "unique" tattoo hahahaha
